SPRING 2012

V-I-C-T-O-R-Y Girls soccer celebrated a near-perfect season by bringing home the Southwest Preparatory Conference Division I Championship trophy.

The Falcons beat Kinkaid of Houston 1-0 in the championship game to take the title.

The team beat St. Mary’s Hall of San Antonio in the first round 5-0 followed by a win in the semi-finals against John Cooper of The Woodlands, 1-0. The team went undefeated in conference play and posted 10 shutouts in conference and tournament play. The Falcons outscored their opponents 50-8.

The team enjoyed several highlights this season. They won the Breckenridge Tournament in December; they were able to beat Holland Hall of Tulsa twice… the first time in eleven years and they held their opponents to an average of 42.5 points a game. Senior James Chilcoat earned the Szabo trophy by scoring over 1000 points during his high school career at FWCD.

The team was led by three seniors: Claire Buechele, Kat Hyde and Erin Parker. Over the course of their four years on the varsity squad, the team won two Championships (’10, ’12), were runners up in 2009 and placed third in 2011. These girls will be greatly missed but leave a wonderful legacy for future players to follow.

Boys basketball capped off its season with an SPC Division II Championship. Senior Chris Burton scored with three seconds left on the clock to beat All Saints’ Episcopal 49-47. This was the team’s best SPC finish in 11 years.

Over the course of the season, the team recorded an 18-10 record defeating six UIL playoff teams.

With 20 varsity players returning, the team looks to maintain its competitive edge and set its sights on another successful season.

Mariano Aufiero, Whit Maddox, Alex Morrissette, Kelly Puls, Erick Ritter, Taylor Washuta, Blake Waltrip and Jake Vinson. The remaining players are now looking ahead and setting their sights on the coveted Division I Championship in 2013.

Wrestling finished a strong fifth place at SPC. Six Falcons finished in the top five in their respective weight divisions: Eric Skiff ’14 (2nd at 152), Edward Hudson ’14 (3rd at 132), Ben Sankary ’14 (3rd at 138), John Jiongo ’12 (3rd at 220), Cameron Fraser ’12 (4th at 160) and John Ferguson ’13 (4th at 195).

Burton and Chilcoat, along with the other seniors on the team, Stephen Levy and Kevin Murphy, will be missed. The nine returning players hope to take the momentum from this season and carry it forward.

The team finished ninth out of 20 teams at the Piedmont Tournament in Oklahoma. Fraser and Skiff were finalists, and Ferguson and Sankary finished fifth. Fraser was third at 160 in the State meet. He then placed in the top 20 at the Prep Nationals at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

Boys soccer enjoyed another winning season with a 12-6-1 record and qualified for the Division I tournament.

Varsity coach Mike Vincent said, “Despite a sixth place finish in DI, the team played some of the nicest and most entertaining soccer I have seen in many years here at FWCD and were competitive in every game they played.”

The swim team swam to an eighth place finish overall at SPC. Both the boys and girls swam well and most of the team had their personal best times.

Melody Rodriguez ’15 helped put the team on the map with a second place finish in the 100 freestyle and a third place finish in the 100 backstroke. She has now shattered the school records in both events. She also set new school records in the 100 butterfly and 200 medley.

Other strong SPC finishes were Bose who finished ninth in the 100 freestyle and tenth in the 50 freestyle and Dobson who finished 11th in the 500 freestyle.

The team is sad to say goodbye to its seniors: Amy Barrett, Bose, Allison Hunt, Ryder Nguyen and Wall.

Girls basketball qualified for the SPC Division I tournament with a 5-2 conference record. The team ended its regular season at home against Trinity Valley School. In an exciting down-tothe-wire game, the Falcons were able to secure the win in the final moments.

All the players made significant contributions during the season. The team will greatly miss the incredible group of graduating seniors next year:

The team graduates five seniors: Fraser, Stephen Hwang, Jiongo, Ryan Reesing and Hunter Vick. They will all be missed for their hard work and dedication.

Two girls relays received All Regional Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association honors by finishing in the top eight at SPC. Both relays consisted of Rodriguez, Kirsten Dobson ’14, Shree Bose ’12 and Kate Wall ’12. The teams finished sixth in the 200 medley relay and eighth place in the 200 freestyle relay.

The team enjoyed several bright spots throughout the season and are looking forward to continuing to develop their skills and knowledge of the game.

A very special thank you to the two seniors, Abby Cox and Tara Gordon, for the leadership, hard work and commitment they have provided these past four years.

Six Falcons Commit on National Signing Day

It is always fun to celebrate a championship season and always sad to see it end. However, much of the true success is never seen by the fans.

It is the commitment these student athletes put in every day to be the very best they can be in all aspects of their lives. Their time, commitment, energy and dedication is admirable. A special thanks goes out to the 37 seniors for their leadership on the various athletic teams. You are truly appreciated.

Six student athletes signed their National Letter of Intent on National Signing Day, February 1, 2012. The ceremony took place during Upper School announcements and was followed by a reception in the Schwartz room.
