obra intitulada Freezing Falling.

Open your eyes:
an invitation to immersion in Uma Força Estranha [A Strange Force] Ana Albani de Carvalho
Art historian and art critic. Full Professor in the Department of Visual Arts and in the Graduate Program at the UFRGS Institute of Arts. Member of the Deliberative Council of FVCB. Independent curator.
An exhibition is, above all, imagined. From a curatorial perspective, or even from the artist’s perspective when considering the public presentation of their work, an exhibition begins as a way of orientating thought: a complex interweaving of expectations, research interests, desires, images of artworks – that may be housed in an institutional collection or may still exist as projects in an artist’s working archives – and a particular possibility of spatialization. I suspect, however, that we have devoted too little attention to this stage of imagining and to the role of material imagination in the conception and realization of an exhibition project, especially within the field of contemporary art curation. Here I employ the concept of material imagination, inspired by the philosophy of Gaston Bachelard1, understood as a formative and catalytic element of a creative process that values work, matter, and the body. It is not, therefore, a process of ideation restricted to the mental internalization of visual experience, but rather one that engages all the senses in different ways. To exhibit – whether from the perspective of the artists, the curators, or even the visiting public – is a way of pointing things out, of saying in visual and non-linear terms: “look at this!”. From the initial choice of a theme, through the selection of each work and the connections established among them in the installation of an exhibition within a space defined by its specific architectural, visual, and scalar characteristics, to the actual
1This concept is explored in L'Eau et les Rêves: Essai sur l'imagination de la matière [Water and Dreams: an essay on the imagination of matter], originally published in 1942 by Gaston Bachelard (France, 1884-1962). This essay was translated into Portuguese by Antonio de Pádua Danesi under the title A água e os sonhos: ensaio sobre a imaginação da matéria, for the São Paulo-based publisher Martins Fontes and was first published in Brazil in 1997. The publication is part of a collection of essays by the French philosopher focused on reflecting on the relationships between poetic imagination and the four elements: air, water, fire, and earth.

experience of moving through the exhibition and establishing relationships among images, themes, colors, meanings, and textures, an exhibition calls upon the creative exercise of imagination, both on the part of those who conceive it and of those who experience it. I write this text for the catalog of the exhibition Uma Força Estranha [A Strange Force], at the invitation of Vera Chaves Barcellos, taking as my starting point a list of artworks and their corresponding images, the floor plans and perspective views mapping out their arrangement in the Sala dos Pomares, conversations with some of the artists – whom I thank for their willingness to engage in dialogue – and supplementary research conducted online. Guided by these clues and by this challenge, I concentrated on looking at the works and imagining relationships among them. Images, key-words, questions, and lines of inquiry emerged from this exercise, situated somewhere between what I am able to see and what I consider justifiable to say. Uma Força Estranha, an exhibition scheduled for the second half of 2026 at the Sala dos Pomares, the headquarters of FVCB, organized by artist and collector Vera Chaves Barcellos and with exhibition design by Arthur Bonfim2, brings together 53 works by 36 women artists, selected exclusively from the institution’s collection3. Among the selected works, produced by Brazilian and international artists from different generations and engaged in research across a range of languages and media, are pieces being presented publicly for the first time – most of them recent acquisitions to the collection – as well as four others that have long been absent from the foundation's exhibitions. The exhibition follows Há pouco? [So few?], curated by professor, researcher and current cultural director of FVCB, Bruna Fetter, and forms part of the institution’s 2026 exhibition program dedicated to the theme of “women artists”. As Vera Chaves observes in turning her curatorial attention4 to the collection and to the work of women artists, we are living through a “historical moment favorable to the recovery and recognition of outstanding artistic production by women”5, since it remains underrepresented in collections around the world.
2Arthur Bonfim holds a bachelor’s degree in Museology (UFRGS), and is currently pursuing a master’s degree through the Graduate Program in Museology and Heritage (PPGMusPa/UFRGS). He is a member of the FVCB team, working in the institution’s Art Collection department. During the conception of the exhibition Uma Força Estranha, Arthur Bonfim worked in close collaboration with Vera Chaves regarding the arrangement of artworks in the gallery space and was also responsible for developing the exhibition design project that guided the work of the professionals responsible for the installation. 3With the exception of Elaine Tedesco’s two drawings, both dated 1989, which are on long term loan to FVCB. 4Vera Chaves Barcellos uses the term “organization” to describe her work of proposing a thematic framework in relation to the collection, selecting particular pieces, and – in dialogue with the FVCB team, especially Arthur Bonfim, who was responsible for the exhibition design – presenting them according to a specific spatial articulation. The scope of the present text does not allow for an in-depth discussion of the conceptual and operational distinctions between the terms “curation” and “organization” in the context of exhibitions. Throughout this essay, I will primarily use the term “curation” to designate the activity – both authorial and technical – of organizing and developing an exhibition project. 5This quotation is taken from a brief text written by Vera Chaves – unpublished at the time of completing this essay –, presenting some of the guiding ideas behind her choices for the exhibition Uma Força Estranha.
75
The title Uma Força Estranha was taken from the song of the same name composed by Caetano Veloso in 1978, following a casual conversation with Roberto Carlos in the corridors of a television station in Rio de Janeiro. Legend has it that the two songwriters, then still young, exchanged a few words about the way the passage of time does not affect – in the sense of wearing down or aging – art and artists the same way it affects the ordinary facts and objects of everyday life. Inspired by that conversation, Caetano composed the song that would later be recorded by Roberto Carlos and immortalized by the voice of Gal Costa. Much like the idea that gave rise to it, the song Força Estranha [Strange Force] has withstood the fads of the entertainment industry and preserved its iconic character by inviting us to reflect on the intertwining of life and art as a powerful force that transcends obstacles, lost battles, an uncertain future, and unfavorable circumstances. Before proceeding, I reiterate that the narrative presented in this essay takes the form of notes prompted by the challenge of writing while “looking at the artworks”, considering the curatorial thread that connects them without restricting them to a gender-based framework. Given the editorial constraints of this publication, I have chosen to concentrate my comments on a selection of works and to draw connections among certain conceptual vectors that I identified as the guiding axes of my approach to Uma Força Estranha. The text that follows is, therefore, conceived as a critical essay and, to some extent, as an exercise in imagination. Understanding that curation is effectively manifested through the way artworks are arranged within the exhibition space, it becomes possible to see that Vera Chaves opted for an exhibition design that turns the white cube into an ally. Making use of the open spatial view and the scale of the two levels of the Sala dos Pomares, the installation proposes the association of the works in clusters that reveal thematic, formal, and process-based affinities while preserving the visual impact of the exhibition as a whole, strategically anchored by large-format pieces. From this interplay between proximity – that is, the close observation of each individual work, with its multiple possibilities for interpretation – and distance, understood here as the perception of the whole and the potential dialogues established among the works, I have ventured some conceptual connections that I propose as keys to reading this text. Upon looking more closely at the selected works, however, without focusing on their locations within the exhibition space, I was struck by the recurrence of an element that repeatedly emerged, whether through allusion, theme, title, or representation. The element in question is water: a presence in nature, essential to human life, the probable site of the origin of life on Earth, and endowed with intense poetic and dreamlike 76
resonances, traditionally associated with memory, the passage of time, fertility, and countless other metaphors. Among the works selected by Vera Chaves for Uma Força Estranha, I identified eleven pieces that, more or less explicitly, relate to water through their images, titles, or themes. Ophelia, Em Magma [In Magma], Abyssal I and II, Coleta de Neblina [Fog Collection], Piscina [Pool], Do Mar Purpúreo [From the Purple Sea], Ilha das Flores, Red Sand, Freezing Falling, Cais do Corpo [Wharf of the Body], and Salle de Bains III form a group whose reference to water runs through the exhibition like a sinuous river carving its way across the landscape. Associated with the transitory and the mutable, with ceaseless and fleeting movement, with the murmur of fine rain and the dread inspired by storms on rough seas, with the force of waves that shape and pierce the solidest rock, and with depth and the unknown, I find in Bachelard the assertion that the “being devoted to water is a being in vertigo”. Somehow, I believe that this poetic image of waters and vertigo – perhaps somewhat literary, yet no less visual – embraces the more organic and visceral character sought by Vera Chaves in her selection of works for this exhibition. From this poetic journey through the different waters encountered in Uma Força Estranha, I formulated three additional vectors that might signal possible connections among the artworks: nature, body, and unstable geometries. I emphasize that none of these terms is intended to encompass or reduce the complexity of each individual work, nor that of the exhibition as an aesthetic experience and a stance within the broad field of artistic practices and forms of knowledge. These vectors – nature, body, and unstable geometries – constitute an explicitly authorial interpretation, formulated as a working hypothesis relevant to the context of an exhibition catalog. It is a proposition that acknowledges itself as free, even poetic, in constant dialogue with an exhibition that is still imagined, whose objective construction may well have been guided by quite different principles. With these initial considerations in mind, let us proceed through the exhibition.
77
Amidst waters, nature, bodies, and unstable geometries On the ground floor, the concept of nature emerges through various paths. It appears affirmatively in the nests, titled Rua Simão Bolivar, 118, by Marlies Ritter; by allusion in Do Mar Purpúreo [From the Purple Sea], by Dione Veiga Vieira; and, by way of counterpoint, in the works of Lia Menna Barreto, Flores de Ratos [Rat flowers], and Helena D’Avila, Untitled – from the series Canteiros [Garden Beds], which explore the very boundaries between the natural and the artificial, with traces of irony. Positioned near the entrance – on the right-hand side wall – and in sequence with the video Résonances, by artist Teresa Poester, Helena D’Avila’s piece forms a square with irregular edges, constructed like a rug – or a garden bed – composed of artificial leaves in different shades of green and a few red flowers. By employing artificial leaves and flowers, the artist not only invokes possible aesthetic and emotional references linked to popular cultures, the realm of mass consumption, and the debate surrounding kitsch, but also shifts the notions of nature and landscape into an ambiguous territory situated between the natural and the artificial, the spontaneous and the constructed. At the same time, through the careful composition of the different shades of green, the visual result achieved by the artist inscribes her work within the critical debate on contemporary painting. From this perspective, it enters into dialogue with Teresa Poester’s work, which likewise moves between drawing and video art, while exploring line, stroke, and gesture, resonating from the gardens of the French town of Éragny-sur-Epte. Continuing through the exhibition’s opening section, we return to the entrance, where Regina Silveira’s NINHO (Black) is installed. Made of transparent acrylic featuring printed insects, the work is displayed on a display cube right at the entrance to the gallery. This small-scale “nest” – a word symbolically associated with shelter and comfort – is part of the artist’s site-specific installation project Mundus Admirabilis. In the artist’s6 own words, the insects – drawn from visual and iconographic references typical of scientific illustrations prior to the advent of photography, rendered in black and printed on generally transparent surfaces – evoke the theme of biblical plagues, a subject that can be readily transposed to the climate and social conflicts of the contemporary world. Looking toward the opposite wall, we encounter the space occupied by a single work of an installation nature. Through the lens of the terms of Life and Death, with its forms resembling rows of white and black candles,

and through the presence of flowers – artificial, much like the green leaves in Helena D’Avila’s Untitled, from the series Canteiros [Garden Beds], – Lurdi Blauth’s installation Flores Parafinadas [Paraffin Flowers] from the series entitled Sete Dias + Sete Dias [Seven Days + Seven Days], also approaches the idea of nature, albeit by less obvious paths. It is not merely due to its scale that Lurdi Blauth’s work greets the viewer upon entering the Sala dos Pomares. Struck by the imposing and enigmatic Flores Parafinadas, we are effectively invited to undertake a mental and sensory immersion into Uma Força Estranha. Another way of approaching the selected works can be broadly framed through the lens of the body, particularly through the presentation and representation of the female body. Whether the body appears as an element of the artistic process – in works that perform for the camera, documenting or recording – or the body represented or alluded to, as a central theme or a compositional element within a scene, in still or moving images, painting, drawing, or object, through presence or absence, in ways ranging from the explicit and literal to the mere trace, works such as Em Magma [In Magma], by the duo Ío – formed by artists Laura Cattani and Munir Klamt; Coleta de Neblina [Fog Collection], by Brígida Baltar; Do Mar Purpúreo [From the Purple Sea], by Dione Veiga Vieira; the cutout paintings Untitled, from the series My Baby Just Cares for Me, by Maria Lídia Magliani; the video Frankensteins Töchter, by German artist Monika Funke Stern; as well as the photographs Ophelia, by Fernanda Chemale; Freezing Falling, by Sarah Bliss; Untitled, from the series Pontos de Contato [Point of Contact], by Mariana Silva da Silva; Cais do Corpo [Wharf of the Body], by Virginia de Medeiros; the painting Close your eyes, by Heloisa Schneiders da Silva; and the photograph Salle de Bains III, by Carla Borba, all engage visually and conceptually through references to the body, exploring its differences, dystopias, traces, dispositions, forms of carnality, ghosts, and imaginaries. I take into account that the notion of the “body” calls forth various theoretical and analytical frameworks across different disciplines, and does not constitute a closed category. Its definition stems from historical and social constructions, whose meanings are produced through discourse and relations of power, bringing into focus themes such as sex, gender, identity, surface and depth, and bodily stylizations. Every body – whether represented or presented – is subject to class, generational, and racial markers. Along this line of inquiry, it would be pertinent to discuss an exhibition featuring women artists7 through the lens of gender and the potential alignment with the critical debates surrounding curatorial activism, with the strands of feminist theory, and the history of recent exhibitions that have sought to promote the visibility and recognition of women artists, curators, art historians, and art critics within the contemporary art scene8.
7Em Magma (photography, 2012), by the artist duo Ío, stands as the exception. Created by Laura Cattani (Les Lilas, France, 1980) and Munir Klamt (Porto Alegre, RS, 1970), it marks the only male presence among the artists included in the exhibition.
79
Although taking a different path, it is nevertheless possible to associate certain artworks with the themes of gender-based violence and the constraints imposed upon women’s bodies. Virginia de Medeiros’s Cais do Corpo, comprising digital prints and a video, emerges as being more directly connected to this perspective. Through a series of images that oscillate between documentary record and poetic construction, it addresses the living and working conditions of sex workers in the Mauá Square area, a former red-light district in downtown Rio de Janeiro that underwent a process of gentrification under the “Porto Maravilha” [Marvelous Port] urban redevelopment project, resulting in the repression and displacement of poor, Black, working-class, and sex-working communities, as well as women and LGBTQ+ people. However, if we attend closely to the image itself, it directs our gaze and understanding toward another sensory map, in which the façade of a large, window-filled building – I visually associate it with a grid, recalling the celebrated writings of American art critic Rosalind Krauss – becomes intertwined with the leopard-print pattern of a woman’s clothing. She is positioned in the foreground, shown from the waist up, with her hands raised in a gesture that covers her eyes. Printed from the video Cais do Corpo, the image plays with visual ambiguity through overlays, transparency, and opacity. A material arrangement of visual signs captured in a single instant – a frame – from a moving image – the video – freezes the narrative and shifts the image’s potential meanings into the realm of the dreamlike, giving rise to a woman-jaguar figure perhaps in flight, perhaps on the verge of bringing down her prey. From the history of the precarious lives in Mauá Square, emerges a figure of power and visual beauty. A transition of meanings arising from an artistic procedure – the shift from moving image to still image – with a poetic and visually compelling outcome. Another work that can be associated with the theme of the grievances suffered by women within a patriarchal society is located in close proximity to Virginia de Medeiros’s work, within a cluster that I understand as being organized around the question of the body and that also includes works by Fernanda Chemale, Sarah Bliss, Mariana Silva da Silva, and Heloisa Schneiders da Silva. This is the large-scale photograph Salle de Bains III, a performance staged for the camera by Carla Borba. In the image, we see a woman whose body – the artist herself, whose figure embodies a socially desirable ideal characterized by white beauty, youth, fair skin, and blonde hair – is entirely stained with charcoal and bent inward within a blue tiled bathtub, situating the scene in a setting readily associated with the old apartments of Porto Alegre, perhaps deteriorated or abandoned.
8In fact, I wrote an article following this theoretical-analytical approach, which was intended to the 35th ANPAP National Meeting – to be held in October 2026 –, under the title Força Estranha: notas sobre exposições de artistas mulheres na Fundação Vera Chaves Barcellos [Strange Force: notes on exhibitions of women artists at the Vera Chaves Barcellos Foundation]. The subject of the exhibitions and curatorial projects involving women artists and women curators viewed through the lens of gender theories, the coloniality of power, and systemic relations – within the disciplinary fields of Curatorial Studies and the History of Exhibitions – is also the focus of my current research project at the Graduate Program in Visual Arts (PPGAV - UFRGS), with particular attention to the FVCB collections and artistic production from the 1970s to the 1990s. The present essay for the catalog of the exhibition Uma Força Estranha seeks other analytical paths.
80
Salle de Bains III is another work that derives its impact – visual, formal, aesthetic, and narrative – from a certain ambiguity between what is seen and what is spoken, between what is present and what we can imagine about the image’s before and after. A naked woman, her body turned inward upon herself, her white skin marked by a black stain of vegetable charcoal in a setting that our daily lives associate with cleansing through water. Our collective imagination is also populated by scenes from films and advertising that link bathtubs, bathing, and naked women to notions of sensuality and sexuality that typically objectify the female body. The violence exposed by Carla Borba’s work manifests itself through the frustration of these conventional expectations surrounding the representation of women’s bodies and their ideals of beauty and especially because the image enacts this rupture through a dialogue with art history and the long pictorial tradition of depicting women at their bath. In place of the water that purifies, the bathtub is filled with charcoal that kindles and sustains fire. Instead of white, fragrant foam, there is charcoal – burnt wood, ash, dust, alchemical nigredo – which is also a primary instrument for drawing and mark-making, a material for art. Within this same grouping of works, brought together through the exhibition design on the upper floor of the Sala dos Pomares, Vera Chaves positioned four images by artist Sarah Bliss, a piece titled Freezing Falling. In addition to associating notions of freezing and falling, paralysis and cold, the images also engage a central principle of canonical photographic language, embodied in sharpness. Here, by contrast, Sarah Bliss visually dissolves forms – through condensation, blurring, extremely close-up framing, and the fragmentation of the figure –, thereby intensifying the image’s ambiguity. Amidst this ambivalence, I find myself once again drawn to connections with cinema, particularly the iconic bathroom murder scene immortalized by Hitchcock in Psycho (1960). Yet the images – if I once again insist on attending to them – also suggest other, less morbid possibilities. I see open mouths pressed against a damp surface, caught in a kind of grimace or moan. Pain or pleasure? Why do I imagine it to be a woman’s mouth, suspended between a crime and an orgasm? We could, certainly, research Sarah Bliss’s artistic project and solve the riddle. But I prefer to remain with the ambiguity, with the poetics of the nebulous, in yet another encounter with the element of water, with the moisture and steam that fog our view of the “reality of the facts”. The third vector that emerges from this trajectory through the exhibition brings together works that I have associated with unstable and sensitive geometries, insofar as they explore ambiguity, the formal possibilities of spatial representation, and the poetics of imbalance and incompletion, embracing complexity as a condition of contemporary experience. Within this segment, I consider the works of Marina Camargo, with the object Distúrbios [Disturbances], and the piece Arapuca e Confete [Trap and Confetti], by artist Débora Bolzsoni, as well as the square-format works, among which I would highlight Gisela Waetge’s painting Untitled (2004), and Maria Lúcia Cattani’s woodcut Untitled 81
(2004), the latter being exhibited for the first time in an exhibition at the FVCB. Refining my perception of what I view as sensitive geometry, I turn my gaze back to Arapuca e Confete, by Débora Bolzsoni, positioned right at the entrance to the Sala dos Pomares. Composed of two elements that are disparate in both materiality and form, unstable in multiple senses, and oscillating between two and three dimensions, between the realm of drawing and the space of sculpture, between the solid and the volatile, here are trap and confetti. A device for catching birds? That explains why the nests are empty. Elaine Tedesco’s two large-scale Untitled drawings, both from 1989, are strategically positioned on the anchor wall of the Sala dos Pomares, the one visible at the far end of the main hall, bearing the exhibition-design mission of spatially drawing the viewer’s gaze and prompting movement toward the end of the gallery. Not only are the figures ambivalent, hovering between flatness and volume, built up through multiple layers of graphite and pastel, and alternating between solidity and emptiness, but the support itself, the crumpled sheet of canson paper, also becomes, through this process, a single body with the artwork. Another work by Tedesco, the piece Nó [knot], a spherical form configured as a labyrinth of tangled lines through the twisting of several meters of white cotton fabric, can also be aligned with the theme of unstable geometries. It is an unstable and sensitive geometry, defined by both its formal aspects and its procedures. Twisting, skewing, and shaping. Much like the drawings from the 1980s, where forms and gestures, such as marking the paper or tracing an arc, create tension between the visual fields of the flat plane and three-dimensional volume, Nó emerges from the transformation of a flat element – white cotton fabric, ordinarily used to make bed sheets – into a volume, brought about by a twisting gesture. Positioned in close proximity to the group of abstract works presented on the upper level of the Sala dos Pomares, Nó functions as one of the exhibition’s anchor images, helping to construct the visual, aesthetic, and conceptual framework that sustains the imaginary of a certain force and, in this sense, the exhibition itself. Ultimately, Uma Força Estranha invites us to dive in while simultaneously opening our eyes. To look at and see what these artists produce, the tensions they create, the questions they raise, and what they bring to the surface in the field of art. To do so, we mobilize our bodies and our lived experience as a political force in the here and now. As Caetano Veloso wrote in the 1978 song, “the surest thing of all things / is not worth a path beneath the sun.” 82
