Fusion Film Festival is proud to honor Melina Matsoukas as our 2017 Woman of the Year. This Grammy award-winning director (Rihanna’s We Found Love) and NYU/Tisch graduate has brought her creativity and talent to new heights in the last two decades, working with the best of the best in music, advertising, film, and television. Melina is best known for her music video collaborations with artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, and the late Whitney Houston. She has served as Creative Director on Beyoncé’s album 4 and has directed commercials for major advertising clients like Nike, Adidas, Stella McCartney, and Coca-Cola. Ever-evolving, she has recently progressed into narrative work, serving as Executive Producer/Director for HBO’s Insecure (created by and starring Issa Rae). Through her work, she strives to “give voice to stories usually left unheard,” offering “a window into relevant sociocultural experiences.” In addition to her Grammy award-winning music video, she was the first director to win a Grand Prix at the Inaugural Cannes Entertainment Lions for Music Award ceremony for directing Beyoncé’s Formation video. Along with her degree from the Tisch School of the Arts, she received a Masters of Fine Arts in Cinematography from the American Film Institute.

MISSION STATEMENT
Celebrating Women in Film, Television, & New Media The Fusion Film Festival is New York University’s premiere festival dedicated to celebrating women in film, television, and new media, from students to industry professionals. Fusion was founded in 2003 at NYU’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts by two students in Undergraduate Film and Television, Emma Heald and Gina Abatemarco, with the mission of encouraging, promoting, and inspiring women filmmakers and the collaboration between the sexes. Since its inception, Fusion has been passionately guided by Kanbar UGFTV Professor Susan Sandler. Every spring, Fusion mounts a multi-day film festival with multiple screenings, industry panels, pitch meetings, masterclasses, retrospectives, networking events, competitions in twelve distinct categories, and student showcases. In the fifteen years since its launch, Fusion has been proud to attract accomplished artists and entertainment visionaries such as Lena Dunham (HBO’s Girls), Maria Zuckerman (VP of HBO Films), the writer and producers for Sex & The City, Reed Morano (cinematographer of The Skeleton Twins and Kill Your Darlings), Lucy Alibar (writer of Beasts of the Southern Wild), Lauren Zalaznick (former Chairman of NBC Universal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media), Amy-Sherman Palladino (creator of Gilmore Girls), Janet Tamaro (creator of Rizzoli & Isles), the writers of Orange is the New Black, and actor Paul Rudd. We are also proud to stand with the Sundance Institute’s Women’s Initiative as an Allied Partner. Our goal here at Fusion is to celebrate visionaries in the industry as well as those in our own NYU community, feature incredible work, and have you leave feeling inspired by the art of great storytelling.

LETTER FROM THE
SUSAN SANDLER
DIRECTORS Dear film, television, and new media lovers, Welcome to the 2017 Fusion Film Festival! We are honored and excited to be celebrating our 15 Year Anniversary with some of the most inspiring filmmakers, producers, gamers, comedians, and activists in the industry, starting with our Woman of the Year: Melina Matsoukas. She is a Grammy award winner, producer, and music video director. Her visions and direction are iconic in every sense of the word. Melina tears down barriers and empowers women of all colors and backgrounds through her work. We are more than honored to have such an amazing Tisch alum join our festival and support our cause. Some of our other 2017 festival highlights include our first-ever virtual reality event, an inspiring Women of Color panel, and a panel featuring leading ladies in animation. The Fusion Film Festival would not be possible without our dedicated, talented, and creative staff of 180 NYU undergraduate and graduate students. It has been a privilege working with such an inspiring group of young rule-changers who have come together to celebrate our mission and work towards a brighter future. Leading this incredible team is our one-ofa-kind Faculty Advisor Susan Sandler. Her vision and support has lead Fusion through fifteen incredible years. A huge thank you to Susan for her constant support, enthusiasm, and love. We are so thankful for her hard work and evolving vision for the festival. We have learned so much from Susan and her dedication and passion towards Fusion. Thank you for joining us for another year of the Fusion Film Festival! We hope you are inspired to change the rules with us.
Thank you, Fusionistas, for 15 glorious years! Love, Susan

LETTER FROM
DEAN GREEN Happy 15th Anniversary to the Fusion Film Festival! We are so proud of this film festival. It’s an outstanding example of how Tisch students can create important new initiatives. I am especially grateful to Susan Sandler, a member of the Kanbar Institute faculty, who from the beginning has been the guiding force, advisor, and mentor to so many. The industry’s leading female filmmakers quickly took note of the Fusion Film Festival’s mission to celebrate women in film, television, and new media, and over the years many have attended the festival to share their work and to inspire our students. We all have much to learn from the important conversations that abound from the festival year after year. This year is no exception. We are so fortunate to welcome two extraordinary role models. Grammy Award winner and Tisch alumna Melina Matsoukas ’03 (BFA, Kanbar, Film & TV) returns to our campus to be honored as our Woman of the Year. We also are grateful to Kelly Edwards, HBO’s VP of Talent Development, for joining us for Brunch with an Icon. I’m also so happy to see important panels on Women in Virtual Reality, Women in Animation, and Women of Color. I close by offering my sincerest thanks to Emma Heald and Gina Abatemarco, two students who, 15 years ago, sought Susan’s support in creating a way to celebrate women. Together, they built Fusion around collaboration and made it possible for others to join in building a festival that now offers programming throughout the year. I am grateful to each and every person who has volunteered time, talent, and energy to make the Fusion Film FestIval a vital part of NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Sincerely, Allyson Green Dean of the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television

LETTER FROM
ASSOCIATE DEAN BURKE In my first year as Associate Dean, I am excited to offer not only my support to the Fusion Film Festival but also my gratitude. Founded by undergraduate students Gina Abatemarco and Emma Heald in 2003, the Fusion Film Festival is focused on the celebration of women filmmakers and their work. With the help of Susan Sandler as their faculty advisor, these impressive young women created a week-long event including panels, screenings, master workshops, and lectures. 2017 marks the fifteenth year of the festival, whose mission is as relevant and pressing today as it was when it began. I am proud that this annual event highlighting the work of women has thrived over the last decade and a half. Women continue to be underrepresented in the film, television, and new media industries, and Fusion reminds us all of our responsibility to do what we can to promote change here and outside of NYU. Fusion began as an event in the Undergraduate Department of Film & TV but quickly grew to become a collaborative effort involving students, alumni, faculty, and staff from multiple Tisch Departments. The annual swell of support in the form of donated time, space, and money speaks to how integral Fusion has become to our community. This year, Gabriela Alcalde (‘17), Leticia Bianco (‘17), and Piera Van de Wiel (‘17) lead Fusion guided by the continued work of Susan Sandler. Fusion is unique among student organizations for its scope and vitality. This year they’ve outdone themselves with events ranging from a screening of JEAN OF THE JONESES followed by a Q&A with director Stella Meghie, to a brunch with Kelly Edwards, HBO’s VP of Talent Development. Melina Matsoukas, Fusion’s choice for Woman of the Year, is a remarkable director who exemplifies the commitment to excellent storytelling that is at the heart of our curriculum. I speak for everyone in the Kanbar Institute when I say that we are grateful to Fusion’s incredible student staff and Susan for their continued work and dedication. Organizing Fusion is no small task, and their tireless efforts are inspiring. I am thrilled to celebrate the landmark fifteenth year of the Fusion Film Festival, and I offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped make it possible this and every year. Sincerely, Michael Burke Associate Dean of the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television

REFINERY 29’s SHATTERBOX ANTHOLOGY Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology, a collection of short films, told through the lens of female storytellers, share a common theme tied to the dynamics of power. The initiative provides emerging female filmmakers with support and continued opportunities to realize their creative vision across multiple platforms. Initially announced at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology was born as a rallying cry to counteract the staggering data that proves the lack of female representation behind the camera in Hollywood. Refinery29 is committed to finding a solution for the recent stat that only 7% of top 2016 films were directed by women. The first season of Shatterbox Anthology short films include Chloe Sevigny’s directorial debut Kitty which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and screened in the prestigious New York Film Festival; Kristen Stewart’s Come Swim which premiered in the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and Anu Valia’s Lucia Before and After which won the US Narrative Jury Prize for short film at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
