On Your Mark, Get Set, It’s Time to Fuel for Race Day Success!

Summer is so close we can taste it, and with it comes road race and marathon season. Signing up for a 5K, or even a marathon, can be a great way to inspire regular physical activity in yourself and even in those around you. Having an end goal in mind – such as completing a 5K – can help keep you on track with your physical activity. But what if you have never attempted a race before? When building your training plan, planning your fueling strategies along with your runs is critical to helping you reach your fitness goals, prevent injury and recovering optimally. Whether you have signed up for a race or are just thinking about it, Hy-Vee dietitians are here to help you fuel for success with their top pre- and post-workout nutrition tips!

Let’s start with pre-workout nutrition – anywhere from 3 to 4 hours prior to your training session, fuel up with a performance plate. A performance plate should include carbohydrate-rich/whole-grain foods because carbohydrates are the best fuel for working muscles! Your performance plate should also incorporate protein-rich foods because protein is the building block for supporting and building new muscle mass. Next, add some color to your performance plate with fruits and vegetables to pack in fiber along with valuable vitamins and minerals. Last, don’t forget healthy fats that provide additional fuel, such as omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce inflammation. If you only have 30 minutes to 1 hour before your training, aim for a carbohydrate-rich snack that can be quickly digested such as fruit, granola, rice cake/toast with nut butter or even a handful of pretzels. It may take some trial and error to determine what you can handle leading up to a workout, but finding the foods that fuel you and leave you feeling satisfied is key to race day success!

Hydration is critical before, during and after a training session. We recommend creating a hydration goal that focuses on hydration all day and not just around your training session. At a minimum, consume half your body weight (lbs) in fluid ounces each day. On training days aim to drink 16 oz several hours before your session, then during your training session aim for 2 – 3 large gulps of water every 20 minutes and rehydrate with an additional 16 – 20 oz of fluid after your training session.

After your training session, refuel within one hour to help with recovery! You can do this by focusing on the 4 Rs of recovery nutrition – refuel with carbohydrates, repair with high-quality protein, rehydrate with fluids and electrolytes, reinforce with color (fruits/vegetables) and healthy fats. Give this recipe for a refreshing Pina Colada Smoothie a try after your next training session to help you refuel.

The economic development committee recently conducted a survey of committee members to help create a cohesive strategy moving forward. Some interesting themes emerged from the survey data and ensuing discussion. The first major theme that the committee discussed was the need to be an educational hub for folks interested in development on the East, South and North side of Des Moines. To this end, we are working to establish a landing page with a list of resources that will be a value add to our members. Another key takeaway from the survey was the need to provide targeted

learning and development opportunities for our members. This could take many forms including something as extensive as an economic development summit to more concentrated lunch and learns throughout the year. The committee will be working over the next few months to identify what this event(s) may look like. We are excited to take a more strategic look at how we can assist economic development initiatives in our footprint.

Why the Maker Movement is Important to Iowa’s Future

There is increasing interdependency between where our products come from and how we support each other in business. Makers create with the power of their ideas and products, they engage solutions to consumer need and they have enormous impact on the economic and social development of communities. Makers fuel business. If you give the makers the right tools and resources, they grow our economy and tax base.

Make DSM is a vibrant, active network of makers and those who support them, helping to create an ecosystem that leverages resources, shares best practices and builds community. Growing manufacturing generates economic activity.

• A vibrant manufacturing base leads to more research and development, innovation, productivity, middle class jobs and state exports

• For every dollar of domestic manufacturing, another $3.60 of economic activity is generated elsewhere across the economy

• For every manufacturing job, 3.4 non-manufacturing jobs are created

No other sector comes close to these numbers. Are you a maker who is driving business growth, operating in central Iowa and ready for a community of like-minded connections organized around supporting each other? When people, inspiration, tools and opportunity come together, it fuels Iowa’s future. Join us.

FuseDSM offers dental and vision plans from Delta Dental of Iowa that are sure to make a big difference to your employees and their overall heath.

Regular dental and vision exams can identify early signs of diseases and chronic health conditions before they become more serious and harder to treat.
