I’m thrilled to report that the Empresari@s group is reorganizing after taking time off during the pandemic. An initial brainstorming meeting was held with leaders in the community and a handful of collaborative ideas were discussed in how to move forward with important and valuable resources to Latino businesses and the community. It is important that this group isn’t recreating a wheel that already exists within the community, but targeting what is not being done. Stay tuned for more information!

MACRAE PARK PHASE 3 FRIENDS OF SW 9TH With the second year of construction on MacRae Park Phase 3 Improvements beginning in April and the contractor already making great progress, it seems like the right moment for the next update and progress photos (attached). When driving by on SW 9th Street, you may have noticed that the open-air shelter near the nature playscape is really coming along. The shelter structure is up, the roof is on and the electrical is being wired. The final components of the concrete floor were poured last week. This feature is still available for a naming rights donation. Work has begun on the water feature at the center of the nature playscape with grouting of the wall stones and the initial concrete pour for the water runnel. The plumber is working on the mechanical systems and concrete installation will continue over the next few weeks. A final structural design has been completed for the boardwalk across the pond and the contractor securing a specialty sub-contractor for installation. A bit of background --- the original planned helical foundations were found to be insufficient due to shallow bedrock under the pond and the inability of the helical piers to penetrate the bedrock. The design team worked over the winter to generate a new solution and landed on augured H-piles. The City Manager approved additional funds and the structural design was then completed. The H-piles will be a lasting solution with a minimum amount of maintenance. The schedule going forward includes the completion of the majority of the playscape work near the end of June. The boardwalk is scheduled to begin in early October. You will see the pond being drained one more time and then re-stocked. This work is anticipated to be complete near the end of December 2022. In addition to the open-air shelter naming rights donation opportunity, the Friends of Des Moines Parks link for general donations is still active and just waiting for the next generous contribution. Please forward to your contacts = MacRae Park | Friends of DM Parks. We thank you for your continued support during this monumental project!

CHERRY GOOD CELEBRATIONS THIS SUMMER! BY: ANNE CUNDIFF, RD, LD, FAND CORPORATE HY-VEE DIETITIAN
Give a boost to your summer celebrations and celebrate the “red” of “red, white and blue” with help from cherries! Cherries are juicy and in-season throughout the summer and are my absolute favorite fruit. Enjoy cherries on their own or on top of a salad or toast, baked in a dessert, or cooked for a savory sauce served with meat or seafood. Because cherries are bursting with beneficial nutrients, they make an ideal summertime sweet treat to savor. Cherries are nutrient-dense, meaning they are lower in calories but provide many key nutrients. They contain significant amounts of anti-inflammatory compounds and

antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-carotene and flavonoids. These nutrients may help reduce the risk of some chronic diseases such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Some studies have shown cherries may also help improve sleep, cognitive function and muscle recovery. There are so many reasons to add cherries to your shopping cart. Here are a few pointers for doing so: How to buy: Cherries are ripe when the fruit is soft but not mushy. Select cherries with green, unbroken stems and taught, glossy skin. Sweet cherries, such as Bing and Rainier, are in season May-August and tart cherries, such as Montmorency and Morello, are in season July and August. Alternatively, you can purchase frozen cherries year-round. How to store: Refrigerate cherries, dry and unrinsed, for up to 4-7 days, as warmer temperatures make them lose their juiciness. Alternatively, freeze cherries in an airtight plastic bag for up to 6 months. How to prep: To pit cherries, use a skewer, chopstick, metal straw, cherry pitter or other sharp object to push up through bottom center of cherry to remove the pit and stem. Now it is time to enjoy cherries with help from this slow cooker recipe that will allow you to enjoy your 4th of July festivities and let the slow cooker do the work for you!

It was a magical night of cornfields and baseball that took our breath away and made grown men cry. It was a beautiful story that created a major economic boost and a priceless promotion for our state — people are still talking about it! And just think: It all started with the arts. The story was an idea hatched in Iowa City that became a book, then a script, then an iconic movie, a major league sports attraction and now a digital television series for a whole new generation. It’s a gift of the arts that keeps on giving. It’s also an example of how we are successfully building a sustainable ecosystem for filmmakers, so others will come.
Produce Iowa Produce Iowa is the reimagined state film office, and one of our primary goals is to help incubate Iowa stories and create home-grown projects here in Iowa. We launched our office from scratch nine years ago and have strategically built a foundation of support in communities across the state. I’ve seen that growth firsthand, and it fills me with pride. It’s the 16 Iowa communities from Siouxland to Snake Alley who are producing film festivals and welcoming guests from all over the world to their main streets. It's the resident Iowa filmmakers who are spending money in small towns and creating jobs that support our film and television industry organically, as a whole. Sustainability is essential. We want to invest in the filmmakers who stay in Iowa, and we want to help them develop the industry in their own ways. We do this by cultivating a filmmaking ecosystem that supports all kinds of productions, big and small. These efforts start with opportunities. For example, we help Iowans find jobs by encouraging them to showcase their skills and services in our free statewide Media Production Directory, and we help property owners earn money with our Location Database. Our office facilitates requests every day from producers who want to visit Iowa, hire Iowans and spend money on productions right here in Iowa. Film and media projects create high-paying trade jobs, boost small businesses and drive tourism while attracting and retaining residents. We elevate Iowa-made short stories through a statewide television series called, “The Film Lounge,” with our partners from Iowa PBS and the Iowa Arts Council. Produce Iowa offers a MediaMasters Series of hands-on workshops with industry leaders to provide opportunities for professional development, and we also work with 26 Iowa colleges and universities that offer film and media programs to build awareness about in-state job opportunities. That number often surprises people, but it’s why it’s so important to build an industry that retains creative students and offers them opportunities when they graduate.
It’s also what inspired us to launch the Greenlight Grants three years ago. This program was a major milestone for the office and our impact in the state. To date, we’ve invested just under a half million dollars in 12 Iowa filmmakers to propel their projects “from script to screen” and collaborate with other in-state filmmakers. The grants require a 50% cash match, which requires filmmakers to have some skin in the game and leverage even more funding. The state grants often provide a credible “stamp of approval” that encourages private investors to help filmmakers tackle projects they might not be able to do anywhere else. One grant recipient took our $30,000 grant for a pilot episode and turned it into just over $100,000 — all of which she spent on Iowans in our filmmaking ecosystem. The grant was the spark she needed to believe in herself and push to the next level. When we encourage people to produce in Iowa, the ripple effects benefit small businesses and Iowans who aren’t even in the film and television industry. Film crews stay in hotels. They eat at cafes and restaurants. They buy lumber and gear at the hardware store. They rent cars. They hire caterers and construction workers and real estate agents. All of this happens when we manufacture entertainment here in Iowa to meet the world’s evergrowing demands for content. But now back to that original Iowa story I mentioned earlier. The new adaptation of a 34year-old Iowa movie will reach an even bigger audience, while once again fueling our filmmaking ecosystem. A new limited digital series of “Field of Dreams” will begin major production in July through August here in Greater Des Moines (DSM). The NBCUniversal production is written and executive produced by Michael Schur (“The Office”) and will stream on Peacock in 2023. We’re thrilled that Schur and his production team couldn’t think of the movie without thinking of Iowa — and vice versa. And it's good to know that a native Iowa filmmaker will help shepherd this story. Another executive producer, Morgan Sackett, grew up in Okoboji and went on to help produce some major Hollywood hits such as “Seinfeld,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Veep” and “Hacks,” to name just a few. It goes to show that there is always an Iowa connection in business. Whether you are an Iowa filmmaker working here or an expatriate who wants to bring a project back to the state, it's important to continue to cultivate high-quality storytelling and welcome opportunities that feed our diverse and sustainable ecosystem. So, get ready for another summer of baseball and magical cornfields in our state. Iowa is certainly heaven to filmmakers. For more information, please visit produceiowa.com.

LIMITING TO LIMITLESS: WHY SUMMER IS ABOUT SLOWING DOWN BY ERIK DOMINGUEZ I am intentionally limiting my income this summer. I know I am not supposed to admit that to others, especially as an entrepreneur. I have said no to speaking engagements and I have limited my client load. That seems counterproductive to the journey we are on. While I have been speaking and coaching for over 25 years, I launched Speak Up Stories in January of 2020. Perfect timing for a speaking and public speaking consulting and coaching business, right? As soon as the pandemic hit, my head started to spin. Entrepreneurs are already drowned with “musts” and “shoulds” and the pandemic only exacerbated that list. Instagram. Facebook. LinkedIn. TikTok. Twitter. Youtube. Snapchat. Blog. Website. Email List. Workshops. ROI. SEO. CRM. Funnels. That’s how you can connect while we are separated during this time. And, I agreed and aligned with that strategy and I tried them ALL. Those strategies did provide a lot of benefits to me. But I felt like that old photo of a man on a tricycle spinning multiple plates at the same time. I quickly burned out, shortly after I had just begun. That burnout didn’t ease as the pandemic lifted. The messages of how to market your business intensified and I added more plates, more tasks, and more “musts” and “shoulds” to my list. Except there were two main components of my business falling behind and two components. These are two components that I believe come before ANYthing else. These will be the focus of my summer and I invite you to make them the focus of yours. 1. Excellence in your craft. Speaking is an art form that requires hours of research, writing, rehearsing, being coached, watching videos, revising, and rehearsing again. I am at my best when I am delivering the best keynote experiences for an audience. I found that as I got caught in the whirlwind of DOING business, that I forgot why I started my business in the first place: inspiring and equipping leaders in confident communication. Why did you start your business? Are you spending time in that craft?
