FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Health care is a big line item for all businesses. The problem is even more profound for small businesses who in many cases don’t have the employee count to access health care markets that can provide good benefits at a reasonable cost. Against this back drop, FUSEDSM went looking for a solution and worked together with our partners, Taylored Benefits and United Health Care to create this program which should provide a great option to our members. Make it More Than a Box Check According to LinkedIn data released in September 2020 there has been a 71% increase worldwide in all Diversity & Inclusion roles over the last 5 years and with awareness of inequities in society at what seems to be an all time high it’s safe to say that percentage will keep climbing. The U.S. is leading this growth and DEI has gone from being a topic exclusively existing in Fortune 500 board rooms to companies with less than 500 employees now figuring out how to tackle initiatives. But as diversity, equity, and inclusion becomes even more of a hot button topic how do you ensure your business is implementing and maintaining meaningful strategies vs allowing this to become just another box check? In this presentation we will discuss the importance of continual self-evaluation and getting outside of your comfort zone to make meaningful impact that will actually help the culture of your organization. About Dannie Patrick, Talent & Inclusion Consultant, Great Western Bank: As a Talent & Inclusion Consultant at Great Western Bank, Dannie has a passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. She initially found that passion at Missouri State University where she helped implement hands-on diversity training for faculty and staff that combined theatre and educational learning. Since then Dannie expanded her DEI experience by being involved in various community programs and events while working for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. She later utilized her mortgage knowledge to recruit for financial professionals, conduct employee engagement, and develop a DEI initiative for an Iowa based employment firm. Originally from the Kansas City Area she, her partner, and their two pups now call Des Moines home for everything except football and are hoping for another Chiefs victory in 2022!

Riana LeJeune-Copeland is the owner and creative Mastermind of Repinned LLC. Riana was born in 1982 and was raised by a emergency medical pilot father and historic restoration expert mother. Having grown up in historic homes, she had a deep appreciation for antiques and great craftmanship. Riana moved to Des Moines with her family in 1996, attending Callanan and then Graduating from Roosevelt in 2000. After high school, Riana studied Psychology with minors in Criminal justice and anthropology. During her time at Iowa State University she volunteered at a local womens shelter and headed up the Student Officer Program at ISU PD. Graduating with her BA in Psychology she pursued a career in law enforcement. However, destiny had different plans for Riana. Injury at the age of 24 would take her in a different direction. After leaving law enforcement she took several office jobs but it just wasnt a good fit. She longed for something more. After her daughter was born in 2011, Riana took a part time with a company that made sky diving jumpsuits for skydivers all over the world. It was at Firefly Unlimited she worked alongside her first real life entrepreneur/female business owner. A true inspiration. Sitting taking jumpsuits apart for alteration, something in her brain clicked and she began viewing things differently. If you can take something apart, you can learn to put it back together. She soon decided to apply this to furniture and her side gig, something she called "Repinned" and the rest is history. When Riana couldn't find an upholstery school in Iowa, she sought out mentors all over the world to learn from. 8 years later Repinned is thriving and growing under her leadership, knowledge, skilled hands and passion.Riana has been featured in several publications and been a guest lecturer at Iowa State University college of interior design. Repinned is currently one of the select few businesses offering professional custom upholstery in central Iowa. Riana recognized the need for this skilled trade/art form and continues to innovate while revitalizing the industry.

GET INVOLVED IN FUSEDSM HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD IN THE CHAMBER FuseDSM is in the process of forming committees and task forces that will consist of a combination of board members, Firestarter ambassadors and general members of the chamber. With a wide variety to chose from, members are sure to find a group in which your own expertise aligns and/or benefit your business through your involvement. If there are multiple committees or task forces that align, please feel free to join more than one, however, also keep in mind your own time availability. We want this to be a WIN WIN for the chamber and your business as well.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE This committee is an existing committing with Daniel Willrich as the Chair. The purpose is to assure that our members and those areas within our footprint have the resources and a voice in furthering the economic development initiatives. We need FuseDSM to be front and center on these initiatives.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT TASK FORCE Out of this task force will be initiatives/programming to be implemented that are DIFFERENCEMAKERS and GAME CHANGERS for FuseDSM. Think trade programs, programs to aid in developing students to be future workforce ready, Leadership Academy, how to help our members find employees, career counseling, and small business 101,.
GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE This is an existing committee, led by Ryan Anderson as the Chair. This committee does not meet regularly nor does it need too, but it will and does handle all things governance related to the chamber as they arise. PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE This committee specifically will aid the chamber in setting up timely and important topics/speakers for existing events/programming as well as aid in finding venues to hold the programs in. This committee will also be tasked with oversight in reviewing existing programming/events annually and making recommendations on whether to continue or replace existing programming.
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION TASK FORCE This task force will strategize diversity and inclusion initiatives and what steps will be needed to be more inclusive to all minority businesses and those communities. Specific programming will come out of this task force. MEMBERSHIP TASK FORCE This task force will review and recommend on the following: 1) Firestarters purpose/mission; 2) Membership pricing, benefits overall (including benefits to attract targeted industries (ie Manufacturing, diverse businesses); 3) TIE Membership benefits; Business 101 / Incubator benefits
MARKETING/COMMUNICATIONS TASK FORCE This task force is to determine if it makes sense that a committee should be revived or rather a strategy plan put in place. The chamber is looking for experts within the marketing / communications industry to be on this task force.

Jester Park Miniature Golf Jester Park in Granger, Iowa is one of our favorite places to play and explore. Not only do they offer tons of hiking opportunities, bison, elk, water play, and more they have a miniature golf course. This fun course is fun for all ages. Grab dad and challenge him to a round of mini-golf.
Captain Roys Take dad to dinner! Captain Roys offers great food, drink and a fun atmosphere. Located right on the Des Moines River you may see a few boaters pass by and you are only a few minutes away from the infamous Rocket Slide at Union Park. Maybe dad will slide down with you.
Live Outdoor Music Summertime in Des Moines is full of options for outdoor, live music including Sunday evenings. Do not miss wine and music at Summerset Winery located in Indianola from 2 to 5 p.m. Or head to the new Jamie Hurd Amphitheater in West Des Moines at Raccoon River Park for live music from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Family Bike Ride Stay active this Father’s Day! One of my favorite stretches of bike trail is the Waukee Trailhead to The Handlebar in Dallas Center. The distance is about 6 miles one way and mostly flat. It is the perfect stretch of trail for the entire family. Grab lunch at The Handlebar or Kinship Brewery on your way back.

PRIDE MONTH IN DSM
CAPITAL CITY PRIDE Capital City Pride is a 501(c)(3) organization that brings together the members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and queer community along with their friends, allies, and supporters. We do this by producing events that inspire, educate, commemorate, and celebrate our diverse community and culture with and for the greater Des Moines metro.

INTRODUCING 30 DAYS OF PRIDE The Board of Directors has decided to move the 3-day Pride Fest Weekend Celebration to a “30 Days of Pride” celebration. We are taking 30+ events that we pack in over the course of a 3 day weekend with 30k+ people in the East Village and instead, we are spreading them out over 30 days in June across the entire city. This will be a month full of in person events with social distancing and mask mandates mixed with some virtual production that will be livestreamed via Facebook and Youtube. The majority of the “30 Days of Pride” schedule, as the Pride Guide, will be released in the coming months as we work to secure locations and dates for all the respective events. People can expect to see almost all of our major Pride Fest Weekend events like Silent Disco, Fun Run, Pet Parade, Community Yoga, & the Pride Parade, plus some new ones in this new month long format. Our hope is that we won’t need to have social distancing and mask mandate guidelines by June BUT given the current environment, Capital City Pride will adapt and make changes to protocols while remaining consistent with recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local and state public health officials. We understand the need for everyone to feel connected to our events, community and celebration so offering a diverse portfolio of events and programming in different mediums will be key to our success in 2021.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF RECOMMENDED DIETARY ALLOWANCES FOR MEN It’s time to celebrate the men in our life! Men’s Health Week, celebrated Monday, June 14 through Sunday, June 20, helps raise awareness about preventable health problems found among men and boys. Historically, men have been more susceptible to certain diseases than women due to hormone differences. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death among men in the United States and can be preventable through diet and exercise. At Hy-Vee, individuals can meet with a Hy-Vee dietitian for recommendations on how to prevent disease through a better diet, including discussing their individual recommended dietary allowance (RDA). RDA is the average daily level of intake sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all healthy people in a specific life stage. Simple steps men can take to improve their health include following their RDA, getting 30 minutes of daily exercise, reducing stress, getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night, having routine bloodwork done, and eating a lower sodium and saturated fat diet.
The RDA for men aged 19-50 is as follows: Carbohydrates 130g Fiber 38g Protein 56g Calcium 1000mg Phosphorous 700mg
Iron 8mg Sodium 1500mg Folate 400ug Vitamin C 90mg Vitamin D 15ug
Potassium 4700mg We know a healthy diet is essential for fighting off disease, strengthening your immune system and simply feeling good. Below are some foods to help you meet your RDA’s. Tomatoes: Lycopene, a phytochemical found in tomatoes, has been found to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease. The best form of lycopene is found in processed tomato products such as tomato sauce, tomato soup or ketchup... Watermelon is also a good source of lycopene. Oatmeal: Men everywhere! Start your day with a bowl of oatmeal. The soluble fiber in oatmeal has the unique ability to bind up cholesterol and remove it from your body before it ever gets absorbed. Seafood: Seafood such as salmon, herring, trout, tuna, mackerel and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are effective in lowering risk for heart disease. Most health professionals recommend having fish (instead of meat) 2 to 3 times each week to reap the benefits of seafood! If you don’t like seafood, omega-3 fatty acids can also be found in canola, flaxseed, soybean oils and walnuts. Omega-3 fortified eggs: Yolks from omega-3 eggs can contain 8 to 10 times the amount of omega-3 fatty acids than yolks from regular eggs. If you eat eggs regularly, substituting omega-3 eggs for regular eggs is a good option. Nuts: Nuts are filling and satisfying because of their healthy monounsaturated fat content. Nuts have their own qualified health claim; eating 1.5 ounces of most nuts per day may reduce the risk of heart disease when they’re part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. A LITTLE MORE ABOUT MICHAEL Michael Bird helped found Spindustry in 1996 after working previously for EDS, an industry leader in information technology. Since then Michael has been leading Spindustry as it grew into an ebusiness leader producing e-commerce solutions, web applications, and digital marketing programs. Along the way, Spindustry has created sister organizations that provide technical training, technical staffing, and a range of SharePoint solutions. When not working, Michael spends time with his wife Lora, two children and friends. If he is not in Des Moines, he is likely at Walt Disney World. In Des Moines, you might find him at a Star Wars movie premiere or organizing Funko Pops in his office. Michael is a strategist, combining skills in application development and marketing. He utilizes those skills in strategy sessions with clients and in facilitating workshops and speaking sessions. Past accolades for Michael include Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Finalist, Technology Association of Iowa IT Leader of the Year, and the Des Moines Business Record’s Forty Under 40 class.
