LETTER FROM THE CEO

JULY 2022

FROM THE CHAIR Happy post Fourth of July! AND….we all know what the next big holiday is in the great state of Iowa – the Iowa State Fair!

The Iowa State Fair is a 10-day macrocosm of what we Des Moines metro business owners experience every day of the year.

State Fair vendors present new and innovative products alongside those tried-and-true establishments that have served as cornerstones for the fair. We’re just like them. Our members bring excitement and explorers to the city right alongside our local consumers that make Des Moines hum.

FuseDSM – Your Chamber of Commerce works hard for us by promoting our products and services, collaborating to help us find partnerships that complement us and by supporting us with

FuseDSM, along with this perfect combination of new and established, small or large businesses, makes for perfect partners in continuing to build this growing and thriving fair AND city year-round.

I mean…it’s worked for the Iowa State Fair for the past 168 years, so I say we continue to follow their lead.

In the meantime, wishing you a wonderful July and don’t miss an opportunity to enjoy all the wonderful events our members have planned for us this month including live music events such as Rendezvous on Riverview, Music in the Garden with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, Zoo Brew at Blank Park Zoo, and the HyVee IndyCar Race Weekend.

I apologize for those events I missed, but please join the FuseDSM Members Only Facebook page to make sure you will always be “in the know”.

At Bankers Trust, we are focused on what’s important to you and are here to help. As Iowa’s largest privately owned bank, we have the personal service and expertise you want, as well as the banking and lending solutions you need. - Jill Crosser, VP, West Des Moines Branch Manager Since 1917, Bankers Trust has been a leading financial institution for commercial and consumer banking services. Headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, and with total assets of $6 billion, Bankers Trust is the largest independently owned depository institution in the state. BUSINESS OWNER TIPS

PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES Disasters can take many forms and the financial cost of rebuilding after a disaster can be overwhelming. If you’re prepared for emergencies, you’ll be in a better position to recover and continue operations should disaster strike. Be prepared Step 1: Assess your risk Every business has unique vulnerabilities and weaknesses. Knowing which disasters are most likely to affect your business can help you to return to operations faster. A back-to-business self-assessment can help you to assess your risks for common hazards such as hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, or even cyberattacks. Step 2: Create a plan Your response plan is your roadmap to recovery, so it should be tailored to your business’s specific needs and operations. It should address immediate priorities and be easy to access. Checklists and online toolkits are effective resources to help you develop your plan. Consider the following: The IRS guide on preparing your business for a disaster The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emergency preparedness checklist and toolkit Focus on disasters that pose a realistic risk to your small business. Consult the following resources to lessen the financial impact of disasters and reopen your business quickly. Step 3: Execute your plan Practice your plan with your staff so you’re ready when a disaster occurs. Get financial assistance after a disaster You may be eligible for a low-interest disaster recovery loan through the SBA for damaged and destroyed assets in a declared disaster. These include repair and replacement costs for real estate, personal property, machinery, equipment, inventory, and business assets. Check to see if one of these loans apply . Home and Property Disaster loans Economic Injury loans Military Reservist Economic Injury Disaster loans Submit your SBA disaster loan as soon as possible, then ask your SBA representative about increasing your physical damage loan for mitigation purposes. There is no cost to apply, and you are under no obligation to accept a loan if approved.

HY-VEE DIETICIAN

TEAM SALTY OR SWEET? DIETITIAN-APPROVED IDEAS TO SATISFY YOUR CRAVINGS BY: ANNE CUNDIFF, RD, LD, FAND CORPORATE HY-VEE DIETITIAN

Whether you prefer salty or sweet foods, conquer your cravings with healthier ideas from a nutrition expert. Since food is such a critical need, if we are not meeting this need, our body (or mind) will send us signals to get us to eat, or to fulfil this need until it’s met. These signals can present as “cravings,” a lack of control with food, a magnetic pull toward food, a feeling that we have “cheated” or given in to temptation. We often simply need food! By fueling your body throughout the day and choosing foods from all of the five food groups, you can get the nutrients needed to help satisfy your hunger. Generally, most people feel nourished when eating within one hour of waking, staying hydrated throughout the day with water and eating at least 3 meals spread out throughout the day. Use this as a guideline to discover what eating pattern and combination of foods works best for you to satisfy your hunger and help you become more in tune with your hunger and fullness cues.

BY: ANNE CUNDIFF, RD, LD, FAND CORPORATE HY-VEE DIETITIAN

Combining protein- and fiber-filled choices will help keep you full, feel content, and help you stop having food on your mind 24/7. Channel your inner health warrior and kick cravings to the curb with these Hy-Vee dietitian-approved picks: Team Salty Harvest Snaps Lightly Salted Green Pea Crisps: This is the real deal when it comes to a veggie-inspired snack. Catalina Crunch Mix Creamy Ranch Snack Mix: Made with the same delicious taste and crunch of your favorite party mix, featuring protein and fiber from ingredients like mixed nuts, chickpea pretzels, and Catalina Crunch Cereal. THE THREE CONFIDENCE KILLING WORDS FOR LEADERS BY ERIK DOMINGUEZ There are three words that I believe are damaging our workplace confidence, especially in leaders. I understand why these words are being used. They are catchy. They are marketable. They address a pain point. They solve a problem. They are what we THINK we want in our life. Because we see them so often in marketing materials, they slowly perpetuate a lie and an unreachable and unreasonable standard for leadership. Here are the three words: Fearless. Fearless leadership is not leadership. The very definition of leadership is going where no one has gone before. Our brains are biologically wired to keep us safe and avoid danger at all costs. Oftentimes, our brains work over time and keep us safe even from that which benefits us. To imply that leaders should be fearless is shaming them when they feel the natural fear and apprehension that comes with leadership. This can have devastating results on the emotional safety of the individual and those around them. Unstoppable. Of course, we want to be unstoppable. We want to “crush goals” and “slay the day.” We want to

achieve

our

maximum

potential.

But

being

unstoppable literally means that you can not be stopped. The worst time in my life - both personally and professionally - was the time when I was unstoppable. I received awards and accolades and was determined to do so at all costs. I bulldozed people and burned bridges to get my results. Using this word feeds the notion that we can’t be bothered to pause and reconsider our goals and our approach to those goals. Again, this can have devastating results in the emotional safety of the individual and those around them.
