BUILDING FIRST PARTY DATA CREATIVE DSM | DIGITAL & SOCIAL MARKETING

Apple is not letting us track customers, Google is removing third party cookies. We're hearing it all over, the digital marketing world is collapsing. FALSE. Lazy digital marketing is ending. Now is our time to build it right.

June's Marketing Tip: Build First Party Data Do you know which specific customers give you the most revenue? Do you know how the deal was closed? How will you ever get this information without Facebook and Google's help? It's simple, start asking questions.

For years marketers have been able to take the easy way out relying on third party platforms to know your customers for you, but what if you started an email list and started asking for the information yourself? This is the future of digital marketing. Soon we'll realize it's where we wanted to be all along. Want some free marketing advice? THE SECRET TO FEARLESS SPEAKING BY ERIK J. DOMINGUEZ OF SPEAK UP STORIES As an immigrant who grew up between two cultures and mixed messages, the familiarity I have with speaking fears fueled me to learn and share the tools to overcome those obstacles. For nearly 25 years, my team-oriented speaking and teaching style has centered around shared experiences, a philosophy that everyone has a unique story, and a belief that everyone can share their minds and hearts through powerful presentations.

In twenty years as a public speaking coach, fear is the most common obstacle I have seen to powerful presentations. At times, the fear is so intense that some avoid public speaking altogether. Most of the time, people choose to play their presentations safe by hiding behind podiums or power points. I have developed a guaranteed strategy in eliminating speaking fear: don't. That's right. Don't eliminate speaking fear. I know I hoodwinked you into reading this with an alluring title, but any claims of "fearless speaking" are the true deceivers. "The Science of Stage Fright," a short TED-Ed video, explains that speaking fears are inherent to our biology. In preparing any public speaking presentation, the best strategies recognize there are prices to pay when you present. The best speakers are willing to pay those prices.

Being wrong? Being judged? Looking foolish? All of those are risks you take when you speak. When we try to avoid these prices, we end up muting our personality and passion, not to mention boring or repelling the audience from our message. Instead of letting fears run the show, it is better to transform your fears into fuel through these simple speaking mindsets:

3. Reflect on yourself. Find a method to evaluate what went well and find people who will give you honest and constructive feedback on your performance.

1.Know yourself. Great speaking is knowing who you are. The more you invest in personal development, the more confident you will be.

Erik Dominguez is a FuseDSM chamber member, a public speaking and storytelling coach, and owner of Speak Up Stories.

2. Show yourself. Are you a punny speaker? Do you love to dig into the data? Do you thrive in Q & A sessions? Whatever your personality is, let it shine.

Transforming speaking fears is simple, but it is not easy. As long as you invest time in preparation, you will improve and learn and

HEAT TRAINING & ACCLIMATIZATION FOR WARMER WEATHER Have you ever wondered what happens to your body when the Spring weather and temperatures shift to Summer temps? Here's the science of what happens when you train/workout in the heat! Given that Summer is nearly officially here, here are few pertinent words about heat acclimatization and thermoregulatory adaptations to exercising/training in the heat: On average, it takes the human body around 14 days for full-systems acclimatization to heat training.

Early adaptations (1 to 5 days) include improved control of cardiovascular function – expanded plasma volume, reduced heart rate by 15-25%, redirection of cardiac output to skin capillary beds and active muscle – increased central blood volume after the first 5 days of heat exposed training. You will sweat more and earlier, especially in this humidity, in comparison to training in lower temperatures; factors affect – decreased internal body temperature to mitigate hyperthermia (core body temperature greatly above normal). Conservation of sodium chloride (NaCl for the mad scientists out there) occurs due to heat acclimatization as well. Cardiovascular stability occurs over the 14 day acclimatization period which baselines at a higher retention rate of NaCl. Excess water and electrolytes will not speed acclimatization, however, if dehydrated and salt deficits exist, cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses may be negatively affected and a greater chance of heat illness may occur. So drinking more fluids, especially fluids with pertinent vitamins and minerals is a great idea. Here are a few things I recommend adding to your water to both increase palatability as well as increase the mineral content that we’re losing through sweat: 1. Add Himalayan Pink Salt to your water and/or add an increased amount to your food. This salt is vastly different than simple table salt - the pink, red, and white hues of the salt are its diverse mineral content, much of which are lost through sweat and not replenished through the Standard American Diet (Western Diet). 2. Add something to your water like Liquid I.V., NUUN tabs, LMNT, etc. Here’s exactly what I do: For every gallon of water I drink a day, every other 33oz cup I use a Liquid I.V. packet + 2-3 grams of Himalayan Pink Salt. This makes it VERY salty to taste, but I’m highly active throughout the day and sweat a lot. 3. Increase your general water intake AT MINIMUM to 1/2 your body weight in oz of water daily. For me, I’m 210lbs so I consume a gallon every day, as well as fortifying my water with a good amount of mineral content and Himalayan Pink Salt. 4. Last but especially not least: Enhance your nutrition game to include green leafy and cruciferous veggies, fruits that are high in water content, and an overall healthy nutrition protocol. It’s important to note that what I do will be drastically different for what you do and what you do will/could be drastically different than what someone else is doing. Consult science backed literature, someone who works in the sports nutrition field, or anyone with a background in exercise physiology for accurate/customized plan of attack. Asking your best friend who “works out a lot” is most definitely not the best approach and could lead to severe illness or injury - lets prevent that from happening. The benefits of heat training are absolutely amazing; the downside to heat training is that it’s extremely dangerous if you are not properly physically/physiologically acclimatized to it. These adaptations and dangers go for yourself, your kids, and even your animals. If you are outside and it’s hot, please be careful and mindful. Heat illness and deaths are completely preventable. It’s a good practice to ease into the season when it begins to get hot and humid out; going into the hot season full-on could lead to heat illness if not properly equipped and acclimatized. Having said that, don’t be afraid to get out in the heat and get your sweat on! Have a great Summer and if you have any questions, please reach out!

HY-VEE DIETICIAN

JULY 2021

FINEST AT FRESH – PICK PRODUCE AT ITS BEST! Hy-Vee does it best when it comes to finding the finest and freshest produce. Berries, melon, cherries, peaches, plums and apricots are just some of summer’s offerings ready for salads, desserts and the grill. Hy-Vee works only with the best growers, especially locally, to ensure the highest quality produce for our customers. Selection and storage play an important role in providing satisfaction to your taste buds this summer. When selecting your favorite summertime fruit, you want berries to be plump and bright in color, as they pack a powerful punch of antioxidants, which keep cells healthy and help fend off chronic disease. Berries are also rich in fiber and vitamin C. Store berries unwashed in the refrigerator and rinse right before consuming. Melons should be firm to the touch and free of bruises or blemishes; store them whole at room temperature or sliced in the refrigerator for up to 3 days for best quality. Melons also have powerful antioxidants and are rich in folate, vitamin C and potassium. Cherries are definitely a summer favorite and they should be dark, firm, glossy and vibrant; store them in the refrigerator up to 1 week. Cherries rank high on the nutrition chart as they are filled with powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins which have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation.

BY: ANNE CUNDIFF, RD, LD, FAND CORPORATE HY-VEE DIETITIAN

Peaches, plums and apricots fall into the stone fruit category; when selecting, look for fruit that is slightly firm but soft to the touch. Store unripe in paper bag for 2 to 3 days until ripe, or store ripe in the refrigerator up to 1 week. Stone fruit is rich in fiber and contain chemical compounds that may help lower blood pressure, fend off cancer and fight certain diseases. Tropical fruit like kiwi and mangoes are very popular this time of the year. Start with selecting those that are unblemished and have a slight give to the touch. Store ripe fruit in the refrigerator. If unripe, store mangoes in a paper bag with an apple to ripen, then move to the refrigerator after ripe. Mangoes and kiwi are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants; and mango fiber is a valuable prebiotic, meaning that it’s food for immune-boosting bacteria for your gut. Find all of your locally grown summer produce favorites in your local Hy-Vee produce department and stock your cart with in-season fresh fruit at its peak ripeness and flavor this summer. Try this delicious recipe featuring two of my summer favorites: peaches and dairy delicious, creamy burrata cheese.

Peach & Burrata Salad - Serves 6 1 head butter lettuce, cored and separated into leaves 1 cup baby spinach 1 (8 oz) tube Burrata cheese, drained 2 medium yellow peaches, pitted and sliced 2/3 cup multi-color grape tomatoes Hy-Vee Mediterranean Sea salt, to taste

2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar ½ tsp orange zest 2 tbsp fresh orange juice 1 tsp Hy-Vee honey 1/3 cup Gustare Vita olive oil Hy-Vee coarse black pepper, to taste Hy-Vee crushed red pepper, for garnish

All you do: Arrange lettuce leaves and spinach on large serving platter. Top with cheese, peaches and tomatoes. Lightly sprinkle cheese with salt. Combine vinegar, orange zest, orange juice and honey in small bowl. Slowly whisk in olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Drizzle vinaigrette on salad. Garnish with crushed red pepper if desired. The information is not intended as medical advice. Please consult a medical professional for individual advice.
