PERKS // FUSEDSM, YOUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WORKING TOGETHER FOR A STRONGER DES MOINES // FuseDSM FuseDSM, Your Chamber of Commerce, is starting a new program for exclusive member to member deals. Not only is this a way for your business to save on other member businesses, but we are also building a stronger community within our chamber.
What Are Chamber Exclusive Deals? FuseDSM chamber members can choose to provide exclusive discounts to new members, or long standing deals for any member to take advantage of at any time. For new member deals, this is a one time exclusive deal to redeem at your business. Your business, and your deal, will be listed within the new onboarding packet. Examples of a new member discount could be 10% off the first purchase, a discount on a consultation, or even a free base product that you sell. The goal is to get in front of new chamber members, and build new pipelines, all as a benefit of your current chamber membership. In addition, FuseDSM is in the process of building exclusive member to member deals that never expire. These deals will be listed on the website for all members to take advantage of throughout the year. This not only saves you money, but also allows your business to be more competitive within your field.
What is the Benefit of Exclusive Deals? We have always prided ourselves on the connections we build and the relationships we form in this chamber. That’s why at FuseDSM, we believe in investing into a buy local initiative. The more that we can work together as a community, the stronger our chamber, and Des Moines becomes.
If you’re ready to start taking advantage of this program, fill out your free application here. - FuseDSM, Your Chamber of Commerce www.fusedsm.org www.facebook.com/fusedsm

BUSINESS EXPERT // MCCRAINE ASSOCIATES ARE YOU AIDING & ABETTING E-MYTHS? // Daniel McCraine We are going to embark upon a journey through the world of e-myths and debunk them to help you avoid falling into the e-myth trap. First, let’s take a minute to talk about what an e-myth is. An entrepreneurial myth, or e-myth, is an assumption that anyone can succeed at business with:
Desire // Some capital // Projecting a targeted profit This sounds great, but it’s just not realistic. Think of starting a business as a marathon. Sure, everyone starts out of the gate at record pace, but after a few miles people start slowing and some drop out entirely. Building a successful business takes stamina and agility. The reality is that there are many different facets to a successful business and none of them can be ignored if you plan to find success. Let’s take a minute to talk about entrepreneurial seizure. This defines the roller coaster of emotions that comes with starting, nurturing and the potential failure of a business. The emotions that occur, in order, are:
Exhilaration // Exhaustion //Despair // Sense of self-loss This is usually caused by the e-myths and assumptions we talked about. You can get your hopes so high on instant success that even the smallest lag and you are sent into an emotional tailspin. This is also brought on by the stark realization that you can’t do it all and will need help in the areas where you don’t have the knowledge. Now, faced with limited choices you may feel like you need to back out and hide, but don’t do this. Use our FREE test drive to get the business coaching you need to avoid feeling overwhelmed and defeated.

BUSINESS EXPERT // ATW TRAINING 6 STEPS FOR EFFECTIVE EMAIL COMMUNICATION // ATW Training It’s no secret that our world is becoming increasingly more digital, especially in the age of 2020. Email is the most utilized form of communication in the workplace. Even with the advent of new workplace communication tools, such as Slack, Jabber, and Teams, email still is the way we communicate at work. And most of us know—email could be used much more effectively! Here are some of our best tips to make your emails stand out and get the response you’re looking for. Our Friends at ATW Training have compiled a list of 6 simple tips to use email more effectively with your virtual teams, and beyond. 1. Focus the Message of Your EMail The average reader decides what they will do with an email in just 5-10 seconds. What your reader wants to know right away is the answer to these three questions: Why did I get this message? // What do I need to do with it? // How urgent is it? To get to the point, PAD your subject line and opening paragraph. PAD stands for purpose, action, and deadline. In both your subject line and opening paragraph, include the: • Purpose—tell your reader why they received the message • Action—tell your reader what they need to do as a result of the email (or, if you’re just sending the message as an FYI, tell the reader!) • Deadline—tell your reader when you need the action done 2. Respond to EMails within 24 Hours. This is about your reputation. If you don’t reply to emails in a timely manner, people won’t feel a need to reply to you. You can get a reputation for being careless and disengaged when you don’t respond in a timely manner.
General etiquette is that you reply within 24 hours, even if it’s just to say you got the message and will respond later in more detail. 3. Think Before Using Carbon Copy, Blind Carbon Copy, and Reply All. Who is required to see your message? Don’t be known for filling your co-workers’ inboxes with meaningless emails. 4. Manage Your Emotions. Beware of responding to an email when you’re angry. Instead, write the email, save it in your drafts folder, and come back to it later. Take the time to consider the other person’s perspective. If you’re not sure about the other person’s intent, pick up the phone! 5. Consider Your Writing and Formatting. We all know to avoid or limit using all caps, text message abbreviations, and emoticons. Don’t overuse exclamation points, either. Some other basic writing and formatting tips: • Avoid using humor in email—it just doesn’t translate well. • Start your emails with a professional greeting. • Keep your email formatting simple. Avoid overly decorative fonts and colors. 6. Proofread, Proofread, Proofread! Take time to review your email before you send it. Always use spell check but remember that spell check doesn’t catch everything! Try reading your email out loud or read from the bottom to the top—both strategies often reveal something we’ve missed. When in doubt, have someone else read the email, especially if you’re not sure how the tone is coming across. When we adopt these tips, our email messages are much more impactful. We’re more efficient, productive, and organized—and isn’t that the purpose of email in the first place?

COVER ARTICLE // PRICE ELECTRIC POWERING YOUR HOME OFFICE SAFELY // Price Electric For nearly 25 years, Price Electric’s highly trained electricians have provided professional electrical services for a variety of stakeholders and built a comprehensive resume in industrial, utility, commercial, residential, low voltage communication, and engineering projects. In 2020, we saw a massive influx of remote work. This resulted in max-shift offices built with the supplies borrowed from here or there, with professionals struggling to find the right space in a nook of their home. We reached out to our FuseDSM Chamber Member, Price Electric, for safety tips to power these makeshift offices. POWER STRIPS IN YOUR HOME OFFICE ”Power strips” (as they are most commonly referred to) “Surge/Spike Protectors” or “Portable Outlets,” typically consist of several components, such as multiple electrical receptacles, on/off power switch, circuit breaker, and a grounded flexible power cord. Power strips range in appearance from plastic-coated heads to banks of plug-in outlets encased in large metal boxes, often accompanied by LED switches that indicate when the units are turned on. Some models include a push button that automatically trips if the strip becomes too hot for safe operation.” Power strips are fine to use in moderation, and as long as you observe proper power strip safety. See some suggested safety tips below. DO’S OF HOME OFFICE POWER STRIPS • Only use light load appliances on power strips such as computers, clocks, audio/video components and lamps. • Make certain you buy power strips with an internal circuit breaker. • Always have the cord straight while in use. • Discard any cord with damaged wires or cracks.
• Use in well ventilated areas. • Assure cord is properly insert into an outlet. They should not show any of the metal prongs. DON’TS OF HOME OFFICE POWER STRIPS • Do not staple or nail a power strip to something. • Never continue use of a power strip that feels hot. • One power strip should not be plugged into another. • Use power strips cannot be used in potentially wet or moist areas. This may include kitchens, utility rooms and basements. • Don’t run power strips frequently. They are not made to run for extended periods of time and could lead to overheating if used often. • Never plug a space heater, microwave oven, refrigerator or other large appliance into a power strip. • The flexible power cord should never be routed through windows, ceilings, floors, or similar openings. THE BETTER SOLUTION Many people make the error of using power strips too often. The simple solution? Install more outlets. “You aren’t simply stuck with however many outlets are currently installed in your home. Additional outlets can provide a safe, dependable and long-term solution to your electricity needs! The process is quick and simple in the hands of a professional, and will have you set to handle all of our modern lifestyles.” The experts at Price Electric can assist you with all of your electrical needs. We’ve been in the business over 20 years and the electricians are all well trained. Contact Price Electric today to schedule service or request a quote.

FLU SHOT EXPERT // MEDICAP PHARMACY GET A FLU SHOT & GIVE 12 MEALS // Medicap Pharmacy This year more than ever it is important to get your annual flu shot. The flu shot is still the best way to protect yourself and those around you from the flu. Not only will it protect you, but it will help reduce trips to the doctor’s office and hospitals, which will be extremely important this year to help conserve valuable healthcare resources. When to Get Your Flu Shot Timing of your flu shot does matter! It is important to get the flu shot at the right time to make sure it lasts the entire season. Just recently the CDC reiterated that it is important to get a flu shot by the end of October and receiving one prior to September may be too early, as vaccine immunity may wane before the season is over. Food Bank of Iowa Partnership with Mediacap Pharmacy When you choose Medicap Pharmacy as your flu shot destination, you are helping those in need right in your own community. Through the partnership with the Food Bank of Iowa, Medicap Pharmacy will donate 12 meals to the local food pantry for every flu shot given at participating Medicap Pharmacy locations from September 23 through November 23, 2020. Do good for you and others – choose Medicap Pharmacy as your flu shot provider. Visit www.IowaFluShots. com for more information. Contactless Immunization at Mediacap Pharmacy Medicap Pharmacy is taking extra precautions this year to help protect our patients and staff. We are offering a contactless immunization form option this year. The patient will be emailed a secure link and will complete the online form. Not only will this new option limit the touching of paper, but it also will limit the amount of time spent in the pharmacy. If a patient would rather come into the pharmacy to fill out paperwork, rest assured we will be sanitizing clipboards, pens, chairs, and all areas of the pharmacy to help protect the patients. Social distancing measures will be in place throughout the pharmacy and our staff will be wearing masks and we request that you do too. If a patient doesn’t feel comfortable coming into the pharmacy, no problem! For your convenience, our staff can also offer curbside flu vaccinations. How to Arrange Your Flu Shot Flu shots are available during regular business hours and no appointment or prescription is necessary, walk-ins are welcome. Medicap Pharmacy can provide flu shots to patients ages 6 months and up with most insurances. Come to Medicap Pharmacy where you have a knowledgeable pharmacist giving you your flu vaccine, protecting your health, and helping you pick the right vaccine for you. This year, for those patients 65 and older, there is a new vaccine formulation on the market. At Medicap Pharmacy, we believe in providing our patients with the most protection and therefore we will only have the four-strain available this year, as it protects you from 4 different strains of the flu.
Medicap Pharmacy is part of GRX Holdings, LLC is located in West Des Moines, IA and is the single overall owner of 22 Medicap Pharmacy locations in the central Iowa area. Medicap Pharmacy is distinguished for its commitment to providing expert, personalized health care. In addition to filling prescriptions, GRX Medicap Pharmacy locations specialize in administering immunizations, health screenings and diabetes education.

BUSINESS EXPERT // SPEAK UP STORIES THE SECRET TO FEARLESS SPEAKING // Erik Dominguez In twenty years as a public speaking coach, fear is the second most common obstacle I have seen to powerful presentations. At times, the fear is so intense that some avoid public speaking altogether. Most of the time, people choose to play their presentations safe by hiding behind podiums or power points. I have developed a guaranteed strategy in eliminating speaking fear: don’t. That’s right. Don’t eliminate speaking fear. I know I hoodwinked you into reading this with an alluring title, but any claims of “fearless speaking” are the true deceivers. “The Science of Stage Fright,” a short TED-Ed video, explains that speaking fears are inherent to our biology. In preparing any public speaking presentation, the best strategies recognize there are prices to pay when you present. The best speakers are willing to pay those prices. Being wrong? Being judged? Looking foolish? All of those are risks you take when you speak. When we try to avoid these prices, we end up muting our personality and passion, not to mention boring or repelling the audience from our message. Instead of letting fears run the show, it is better to transform your fears into fuel through these simple speaking mindsets: Know yourself. Great speaking is knowing who you are. The more you invest in personal development, the more confident you will be. Show yourself. Are you a punny speaker? Do you love to dig into the data? Do you thrive in Q & A sessions? Whatever your personality is, let it shine. Reflect on yourself. Find a method to evaluate what went well and find people who will give you honest and constructive feedback on your performance. Transforming speaking fears is simple, but it is not easy. As long as you invest time in preparation, you will improve and learn. And in doing so, you will avoid the MOST common obstacle to powerful presentations: overconfidence. Erik Dominguez is a FuseDSM chamber member, a public speaking and storytelling coach, and owner of Speak Up Stories. READ MORE
