Welcome! It is a great privilege to have a job I love and to work with each and every one of you. By joining FuseDSM, your Chamber of Commerce, you now have an ever-growing sales team. Each relationship you make is a new connection to an expanded network. We talk a lot about relationships in this chamber.

Business organically grows when people know, like and trust you. We work hard to create opportunities for your business. Our effort to stay informed regarding development in the area, legislative issues, and more makes us a valuable resource for you. We share the information with you to help you grow your business.

Your chamber is a partnership of people working together to build not only a better business community but a better community overall. Collaboration is at the heart of FuseDSM. Chamber staff, our Board of Directors, chamber groups and committees are focused on continuing to collaborate and build strong partnerships to build an even stronger community in 2020.

Our goals for 2020 are two-fold. First, we are committed to providing a membership experience of the highest quality for existing members and second, simply to grow chamber membership. Having spent the majority of 2019 in governance mode, re-building the chamber to be positioned for this growth, we look forward to all the opportunities that 2020 brings.

Year End Banking Checklist For Businesses

E-Commerce for Manufacturers // Michael Bird, Spindustry CEO Topics to Consider in 2020

E-commerce is everywhere — but manufacturers are often lagging behind.

Just 38% of manufacturers have e-commerce websites.

Part of the reason manufacturers are so slow to adopt e-commerce can be traced back to the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The traditional ways of doing business largely haven’t posed enough of a problem yet, so many manufacturers don’t feel a real sense of urgency to explore the increasingly relevant direct-to-consumer model.

A Missed Opportunity What many manufacturers seem to be missing, though, is that B2B customers are ultimately individuals and thus act like B2C customers. Chances are that they’re already shopping online for their personal needs, and not having a way to buy their business products and services online can have a hefty negative impact on the customer experience.

Nearly half of all companies utilize online channels for 50% to 74% of all their corporate purchases. Not being online just means you’ve missed out on an opportunity — not only to secure additional sales, but also to broaden your reach to a global level.

Also, remember that it’s easier than ever for competition and new players in the market to get in front of your customers via Google, Facebook, and email. Not having an e-commerce site could easily cost you market share, even if the competition’s product isn’t as good as yours.

E-Commerce Features So, once you are ready for e-commerce, the first step is to have an e-commerce site that comes equipped with all the basics like browse, add to cart, checkout, email confirmation, etc. Beyond that, there are a few features to look out for at the enterprise level. Those often include the following: System integration options - In e-commerce, a certain amount of coordination is necessary between the website itself and your back-end system that you use for inventory and accounting purposes. Without proper integration, order fulfillment can easily get problematic.

Proper data to support search - Product information is important. It’s what consumers see prior to making a purchase decision. But that data can sometimes pale in comparison to the product data used behind the scenes. Also, inquire about the tracking capabilities of your on-site search function which needs product data to work as well. Search results can be useful to monitor what users found — and didn’t find — during a visit as well as teach you “voice of customer” information about your audience.

Customer tiers - At the enterprise level, you’ll likely run across different types of customers. Being able to segment these customers into various tiers can come in handy. Based on their purchase history, for example, you might determine that one tier would respond well to a certain promotion while another’s browsing behavior could inform subsequent product recommendations.

EXPERT // ARTICLE Driving & Dementia // Luther Park Driving represents freedom and independence; allowing people to get to the places they want to go and to the people they want to see. But to drive safely, an individual must use a range of cognitive abilities including: • Attention and concentration • Visual-spatial skills • Problem-solving skills • Judgment and decision-making • Reaction and processing skills Individuals with dementia are twice as likely to be involved in a traffic accident as other persons of the same age. While some individuals may still possess the skills necessary for safe driving in the early stages of dementia, he/she should begin to gradually modify his/her driving to reduce the risk of accidents. Encourage your loved one to do the following: • Drive short distances on familiar routes at quiet times of the day • Avoid heavy traffic on freeways • Drive in daylight with good road and weather conditions • Drive without distractions like the radio or cell phone for better concentration Because most forms of dementia are progressive, symptoms such as memory loss and visualspatial disorientation will worsen over time. THE CAUCUS PROCESS The Iowa Caucus is typically held in late January or early February; ninety-nine counties select delegates for the presidential nominating conventions. This year it will be held on February 3rd. Each precinct in the state meets in a specific location, such as a school, library or church. Following the caucuses, chosen precinct delegates then go to the county convention where they vote for delegates to attend the district and state conventions.

Democrats divide into preference groups for each candidate and try to convince each other (especially those who are undecided) to switch support to their candidate. Any candidate must receive a certain percentage of the total votes in the room. If a candidate is determined to be not viable (by that percentage), their supporters must disband to support another candidate, remain undecided or abstain. This process continues until the remaining candidates are awarded delegates. Following the 2016 election, the Iowa Democratic Party has made updates to the process and added an opportunity for satellite caucusing. Republicans cast a vote by writing the candidate’s name on a blank piece of paper. For more information on the caucus process for Iowa Republicans, click here.

Voter Information To vote in Iowa, you must be registered to vote. To qualify to register to vote, you must be: • A U.S. citizen, • An Iowa resident, and • At least 17 1/2 years old (must be 18 years old by election day to vote).

You cannot: • Be a convicted felon (unless your voting rights have been restored), • Be judged mentally incompetent to vote by a court, or • Claim the right to vote in any other place.

Proper year-round hydration is key to good health. Health officials recommend at least 8 glasses of water for sufficient hydration. But that consumption will need to increase, if you are trying to lose weight, fight an illness, or exercising regularly. During the winter months, we can lose up to 3 liters of fluids a day.

Not having proper hydration can directly impact your health. Surprisingly, up to 75% of the population is dehydrated. There are many causes of dehydration that you may not even be aware of. For example, we lose water from breathing, sweating, urination and bowel movements. We even lose water from the environmental toxins that surround us daily. These toxins include: processed foods, alcohol consumption, florescent lights, household electronics, seasonal dry heat, and both over the counter and prescription medications.

The results of being dehydrated may include fatigue, dry skin, weakness, dizziness, constipation, abdominal bloating and lack of focus. One common symptom of dehydration is a headache.

Strategic vs. Tactical Visionary vs. Realist People vs. Process Leader vs. Manager There was a time when the responsibilities of the manager and that of the leader could be separated. A foreman in an industrial-era factory didn’t have to give much thought to what he was producing or to the people who were producing it. His or her job was to follow orders, organize the work, assign the right people to the necessary tasks, coordinate the results, and ensure the job got done. The industrial manager’s focus was on efficiency.

But in the post-recession economy, where value comes increasingly from the knowledge of people, and where workers are no longer cogs in an industrial machine, management and leadership are not easily separated. People look to their managers, not just to assign them a task, but to define a purpose. To answer the question “why?” in addition to suggesting a “how”. And managers must now organize workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results.

The late management guru Peter Drucker was one of the first to recognize this truth, as he was to recognize so many other management truths. He identified the emergence of the “knowledge worker,” and the profound differences that would cause in the way business was organized.

With the rise of the knowledge worker, “one does not ‘manage’ people,” Mr. Drucker wrote. “The task is to lead people.

And the goal is to make productive the specific strengths and knowledge of every individual.”

COVER STORY Sustainable New Year Resolutions By: Heather Graeve and Corey Lewis, Broadlawns Medical Center Health Coaches The New Year is an opportunity to recommit to your health and well-being: eat better, exercise on a regular basis, drink more water. Changing your behaviors, no matter how well-intentioned, is hard. And if you’re looking for New Year’s resolution ideas you can stick to, think about looking past the big, obvious ones and pursue ones that may appear smaller, but will have a big impact in the long run. Here are some tips to stay healthy in 2020 with sustainable New Year resolutions.

1.

Get an annual exam Your health involves more than just what the number is on the scale. The best way to stay up-to-date with your health is to get your annual physical. Your annual exam will screen for any medical issues and assess the risk for future medical problems. It can be valuable to have direction when working towards a healthier lifestyle and your doctor can provide you with some of the support you need.

2.

Exercise a little bit at a time We work with a lot of patients that haven’t been physically active for years, in some situations ever. With that in mind, we encourage people to aim for smaller, attainable wins. People tend to get very excited about making a change and set high fitness goals for the New Year and fall off after a few months. This can leave your confidence shot, which is when self-doubt and depression can sneak in. Set a reachable daily goal, like walking 15 minutes per day, and then increase incrementally as you get more comfortable. There are step-counting apps available to measure how much you walk, and they add up quickly. When you see achievement daily, you will stick with it. This sets your mind in a positive direction.

3.

Get more sleep Getting enough sleep is necessary for helping a person maintain optimal health and well-being. When it comes to health, sleep is as important as regular exercise and eating a balanced diet. Being more productive, lowering weight gain and heart disease risk are just a few of the benefits.

4.

Set one goal and stick to it It can be overwhelming if you set five New Year’s Resolutions and expect yourself to give 100% to all of them. That’s why picking one achievable goal can work better. For example, walk 15 minutes every day for one month. It’s a good idea to figure out the specifics of your goal so you don’t run into any confusion or gray areas. Pick a time of day that you’ll walk each day, such as after work, and know where you’ll be walking, such as at the park near your home. It can also be helpful to have someone to do this goal with you so you can hold each other accountable. Once you see that you can achieve one goal, you’ll feel more confident that you can achieve other goals in the future.

5.

Aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water per day Drinking half of your body weight (pounds) in ounces of water each day is a great way to make sure that you stay hydrated. For example, if you weigh 150 lbs., aim to drink 75 oz. of water each day. Bonus tip: add fresh lemon or cucumber slices to add some flavor!

6.

Pack your lunch for work It can be tempting to go for the vending machine snacks and drinks, or to go out to eat on your lunch break. Packing a balanced lunch and bringing that from home can help reduce that temptation since you’ll already have healthy, yummy food with you. Can you get all five food groups in your packed lunch? (Fruit, vegetables, meat/protein, grains, and dairy). Example of a balanced lunch: seasoned chicken, cheddar cheese, spinach and tomatoes in a whole wheat tortilla wrap with an apple as a side.

City Update // Linda Westergaard

I am a life-long Des Moines resident and have lived here my entire life.

I grew up a few blocks from Union Park, attended Harding Junior High and graduated from North High School in 1970. Shortly after getting married, my husband and I bought a home in Northeast Des Moines where we raised 2 daughters. We still live in the same home where we love to have our daughters, their husbands, and our 2 grandchildren visit.

When my children were young, I volunteered at their school and later became involved in the Douglas Acres Neighborhood Association where neighbors could come together to strengthen their community. I have always believed in the importance of community and for more than 15 years, I served on the City of Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment, a volunteer position where I worked with citizens and city staff to hear requests for variances and exceptions to the City’s Zoning Ordinance.

In 2015, with the support of family and friends, I made the decision run for public office. My City Council representative at that time, Bob Mahaffey, was retiring and although I had no background in politics or campaigns, I worked hard and was elected to represent Ward 2 – the Northeast quadrant of Des Moines – on the City Council. During a campaign forum, I remember a woman who was clearly frustrated with politics who predicted that I would be like every other elected official who comes around at election time and is never seen again. I’m not sure if she remembers that exchange, but I am proud to say that I am committed to showing up whenever possible. I truly want to hear what the residents of Des Moines have to say.

During my first 4 year term on the City Council, there have many positive changes, not only in my neighborhood and Ward 2, but throughout Des Moines. I was proud to join my fellow City Council members in voting to reduce the city property tax levy. We are building a new fire station to better serve the growing population of northeast Des Moines. We continue to make improvements to our infrastructure including streets, sewers, and sidewalks. Des Moines has an amazing Park and Recreation Department and it is so rewarding to take my grandchildren to some of the area parks where everyone is having fun. Nothing drags a neighborhood down more quickly than having dilapidated and abandoned housing next door, and the “Blitz on Blight” program is committed to tearing down homes and commercial structures that have deteriorated to the point where there is no other option.

Because we still have a lot of work that needs to be done, I decided to run for re-election and am excited to begin my 2nd term this year. I am committed to doing everything I can to make Des Moines a great place to live, work, and play. Des Moines residents tell me that they want places to shop and dine in their neighborhoods, and while the City Council doesn’t have control over where businesses decide to locate, I’d like to see Des Moines offer incentives where possible and do everything we can to cut through the red tape involved with opening a new business.

My strategy for how to be an effective City Council representative is to listen to our residents. That’s the reason I attend so many neighborhood events and meetings and I truly appreciate all those who share their thoughts – and complaints – about Des Moines. I am impressed at the hard work and dedication that Des Moines residents are already putting forth and view my job as a City Council member is to strengthen and support those efforts.

First in the Nation Film Festival This will be a first of its kind film festival in Iowa open to submissions from Iowa filmmakers. Short films of all genres will be included, as long as they fit a running time of no more than 15 minutes, and focus on a progressive issue related to Iowa. Winners will receive cash prizes and have their films screened at a showing in January.

JCI Des Moines, or also known as Des Moines Jaycees, is a group of civic minded young professionals (YP) who collectively work to better our community, work environments, and ourselves. They are the local YP group of the Fuse DSM Chamber but also part of the international organization Junior Chamber International (JCI). JCI Des Moines host volunteer opportunities, leadership development, and fun socials. They pride themselves on creating a diverse group for individuals to build up their network and explore personal growth, all while supporting the Des Moines community. JCI Des Moines wants to welcome all Fuse DSM Chamber members to attend any of their events including the upcoming Social at 5:30/Meeting at 6:00 pm on January 15th at Beerhouse. The monthly meetings are every Third Wednesday of the Month at varying locations. Please visit their Facebook page for details and all of their upcoming events. One of JCI Des Moines goals of 2020 is to increase their reach on helping the community and welcome partnerships or bringing community needs to their attention. As a new decade is starting, we couldn’t be happier to be leading the Firestarters, the official ambassador group of FuseDSM. As a group, we are invested in growing engagement in our community, while cheerleading the businesses in our footprint, and beyond. Our newest initiatives involve getting even more eyes on our online publication, FuseNews, and helping maximize member ROI by educating about the benefits of chamber membership. This year, we are going to focus on touching every member of the chamber to make sure that FuseDSM is supporting the unique WHY for each business, while continuing to the welcoming faces at chamber events. AFFILIATE // BENEFITS GDMP Partnership Perk The Greater Des Moines Partnership and FuseDSM, Your Chamber of Commerce can help you get a jump start on your wellness with the GetActive Workplace Wellness Toolkit, aimed at helping local small businesses provide turn-key wellness programming for their employees.

The GetActive Workplace Wellness Toolkit was inspired by the Greater Des Moines (DSM) business community’s support of making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation. A Capital Crossroads survey revealed that many small business owners like the idea of helping their employees remain healthy, but don’t have enough time, expertise or resources to implement a program. The GetActive Workplace Wellness Toolkit removes those barriers by arming businesses with “plug-and-play” content to help them implement a wellness program within their offices. The program is a benefit of your Membership with FuseDSM and Greater Des Moines Partnership, and is available at no additional cost.

Each month, Chamber Member businesses may download a new one-page poster and handout that provides wellness tips, facts and resources to give employees immediate takeaways that they can implement in their daily lives. Here’s an example:
