Letter from our upcoming Board Chair // Randy Thank you to Dr. Ryan Anderson, the executive committee and the entire board for their time and hard work during 2019. Over the past year, FuseDSM focused on many governance issues related to our growing footprint that now includes the North, East and South sides of the Des Moines metro area. We continued many popular events and are rolling out some fantastic new ones. We will turn our attention in 2020 to growing our chamber and hosting events that will be both educational and advantageous for you and your business. As with any organization, events are most successful when members get involved by attending or helping to run them. I encourage you to do both in the coming year! FuseDSM is Your Chamber of Commerce, and together we look forward to making 2020 better than ever. Randy Sackett, 2020 Chair of FuseDSM, Your Chamber of Commerce

Year End Banking Checklist For Businesses

Bankers Trust // Travis Etchison Year End Banking Checklist While the season of planning for the next calendar year always seems to come so quickly, it’s important that you give yourself and your team enough time to properly plan for the myriad financial considerations that come with the end of the year. No matter what stage your business is at, I’ve put together a handful of areas you want to be sure are on your checklist to review as you begin planning for yearend and the upcoming year. 1. Work with your trusted partners, such as a CPA or tax advisor to review the changes in the tax law and understand how they will affect your business. This evaluation will help you determine your tax strategies including ways to save on your tax bill, when your taxes are due, and how you plan to cover your overall tax liability. 2. Determine purchases that will need to be made early in the new year, and decide if it’s a good idea to buy them ahead of schedule so you can take the deduction in your current tax year. Remember to also consider other options for obtaining equipment, such as leasing. 3. Evaluate how your business is performing in terms of results versus projections. Review your margins, sales mix and customer base now, so you’ll have the opportunity to begin making adjustments and start the next year off strong. 4. Review your goals for next year and determine the financial needs involved in reaching them. Is expansion or new equipment part of your business’s upcoming year? Consider whether you need to start conversations with your banker and get the ball rolling now. 5. Revisit your business plan. Are the strategies laid out in the plan still in line with the direction your business is in? Will you reach your goals sooner than anticipated? If so, how will you make adjustments? Remember that your business plan should be a living, breathing document, and year-end planning is a great time to revise it. With these five areas to consider, and the many efforts your businesses is undoubtedly already undertaking, you should be well prepared to close out one year and start the next year off on the right foot. 9

MEMBER // SPOTLIGHT Pelds Design Services OUR POINT OF BEGINNING It all started in 1952 when Aivars Leo Pelds was taking his first mechanical engineering class at Iowa State College. On the first day, his instructor asked the class to draw—with excruciatingly tiresome detail—the threads of a screw. As Leo glanced forlornly out the window at the fine autumn day, the instructor declared, “Get used to doing this. This is what you will be doing the rest of your life.” Leo noticed that outside the window, a land surveying class was enjoying the beautiful day as they learned their trade. Longing to be outdoors rather than trapped inside throughout his career, he switched curricula to civil engineering and land surveying. After completing his training, Leo served as city engineer for the city of Urbandale, Iowa, and worked in the private sector. After more than a decade, he set out to work on his own and established A. Leo Pelds Engineering Company. Since then, the firm has served a diverse array of clients, including federal, state, and municipal entities as well as private developers and landowners. The firm added architecture to its list of offerings in 2018, creating more opportunities to work with clients throughout the entirety of the building process. In 2019, the company changed its name to Pelds Design Services as a better reflection of the complete services offered. Pelds Design Services now provides planning, architectural, civil engineering, and land surveying services throughout Iowa and neighboring states. Our leadership has remained within the Pelds family, with three of Leo’s four children taking on ownership and management roles in recent years.

EXPERT // ARTICLE Making Employer Health Insurance More Affordable // Oasis, A PayChex Company For many Americans, health insurance is out of reach due to premiums and deductibles becoming increasingly unaffordable. Employers provide the primary source of health insurance today and cover approximately 153 million people, although it is estimated that as many as 27 million people are without insurance. In a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, as reported in the New York Times1, the average premium paid by the employer and the employee for a family plan is now around $20,000 per year, with the worker contributing about $6,000. Health insurance has become an increasing challenge for small business owners and their employees. More than a quarter of all covered works and nearly half of those working for small businesses face an annual deductible of $2,000 or more1. In many cases, it’s cost prohibitive for small businesses to participate in health insurance.

EXPERT // ARTICLE Preparing for the Holidays when your Loved One has Dementia // Monica Kuehl, RN, BSN, CDP of Luther Park The holidays are a time for family; a time to reconnect, enjoy food and drink, and carry out traditions. If your loved one is living with dementia, you may also feel like the holidays are a time of extra stress and worry. How will Grandpa react if we have people over for a holiday party? Will he recognize his children and grandchildren? Should I take him shopping with me? Do not let these worries dampen the magic of the holidays. With some modifications in your traditions and expectations, I’m confident you can still experience the joy and spirit of the holiday season. Tips for simplifying and keeping the holidays enjoyable for both you and your loved one: 1) Give family members and friends a heads up. Although you are familiar with your loved one’s cognitive abilities and behaviors, you should inform your guests and relatives of his/her most recent difficulties. READ MORE 17

OUR HISTORY

22

Something interesting we have learned since changing our name in 2018 to FuseDSM, is that many people do not know we are a Chamber of Commerce. We are Your Chamber of Commerce! In January 2011, the East Des Moines Chamber and South Des Moines Chamber combined efforts and resources by offering joint membership. For the next two years, the Chambers worked together to provide enhanced benefits to members through goal-driven committees, programs to support member business needs and a full calendar of events. In January 2013, the East Des Moines Chamber and South Des Moines Chambers members voted and approved to join organizations, forming one chamber: Des Moines East and South Chamber of Commerce. Five years later in 2017, another opportunity presented itself to grow our community of passionate and authentic business owners with the integration of the northside of Des Moines. We knew it would become a bit of a mouthful if we just added the north to our name so we rebranded ourselves to eliminate the geographical borders that define most chambers. We decided to “fuse” all of the areas of our footprint so we could move forward into the future as one chamber ready to ignite business growth for everyone as FuseDSM, Your Chamber Of Commerce.

EXPERT// ARTICLE Keep your brain young and sharp // Yogesh Shah MD, MPH, FAAFM @ Broadlawns Medical Center One third of the brain’s volume is comprised of blood vessels. Although the brain is only about 2% of the total body weight, it receives 15-20% of the body’s blood supply. Maintaining a healthy blood flow to the blood vessels in your brain is critical to keeping the brain young and sharp. There are five easy ways you can keep your brain sharp: exercise, eat right, ease stress, stay social and keep on learning. Exercise Research shows that exercise improves brain health, and it’s never too late to begin. Even moderate exercise has been shown to increase memory, mental processing speed and the size of the hippocampus (the part of the brain responsible for forming new memories) in previously sedentary adults. By walking 20-30 minutes three times per week, you can produce significant gains in your memory and mental processing speed. Eat right By eating a diet that is filled with vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes, you can improve the health of your brain. Scientists also encourage eating fish, walnuts, blue berries, spinach and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids for brain health. Curcumin, found in the spice curry, may protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Conversely, a high-fat diet and obesity raise the risk for developing dementia. If high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure are left untreated, the risk of dementia is also increased. There are brain specific diets like MIND and Mediterranean diets.

AFFILIATE // BENEFITS December GDMP Partnership Perk Take The EDGE Pledge We need your help in reaching one of our goals for this year to advance the education pipeline in Greater Des Moines (DSM). Education Drives Our Greater Economy (EDGE) is designed to cultivate cradle-through-career education and training to ensure 75 percent of DSM working-age adults have degrees, certificates and other credentials by 2025 that meet workforce demands. This is a regional goal, which builds upon the State’s Future Ready Iowa initiative. If you believe in this goal, please first take the EDGE pledge for your company to publicly show its support. By taking the EDGE pledge, your company’s name will be listed as an EDGE supporter on the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s website along with other DSM organizations that believe in attracting great talent and increasing educational attainment of our workforce. Once you take the pledge, visit the EDGE page on The Partnership’s website to see examples large and small of how other companies and organizations have helped advance the goal and get ideas about how you may be able to have an impact.
