DES MOINES PARENT

FEB 2022

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN DES MOINES 2022 BY ERIN HUIATT OF DES MOINES PARENT February is the celebration of Black History Month. This is a time we celebrate and recognize African American history, contributions, struggles, and achievements. A time to remind your children that black history is American history, and should be thought of as such. Not only is it a time to remind our children, but an opportunity for us as parents to learn. We are sharing several ways to celebrate Black History Month in Des Moines and start conversations the entire month of February. Art Center+: Celebrating Black History February 18; 4 to 7 p.m. at the Des Moines Art Center All are encouraged to attend a beautiful and moving evening celebrating Black History through music and story. The sounds of djemebe drumming and traditional West African music performed by Augustine Mambu (Sierra Leone) and Brima Jollah (Sierra Leone) will fill the Harriet S. and J. Locke Macomber Lobby. In between performances, a unique tour opportunity will be offered. Using a few artworks in the museum as starting places, Negus Sankofa Imhotep, a beloved educator, orator, and community ally, will lead us on a tour of personal storytelling. Negus is an Academic and Workforce Coordinator at Urban Dreams. No registration is required. Black History Month Scavenger Hunt January 31 - February 6 at the Central Library February 7 - 12 at the Forest Avenue Library February 14 - 28 at the Franklin Avenue Library Explore Central Library's youth section while you learn and complete a scavenger hunt about Black American heroes, educators, and leaders. Black History Month Inventors February 24; 4:30 p.m. at the Forest Avenue Library Join the Forest Avenue Library for a celebration of famous black inventors from history. Enjoy a variety of hands-on STEM activities and make and take themed to some of our greatest scientific minds. Registration is required. Explore Visual Black History January 31 - February 25 at the Forest Avenue Library Drop by the Forest Avenue Library to look at photo books, graphic novels, and other visual records of Black history. These books are available to check out year-round! For now, we're pulling them out with tables, chairs, and supplies to reflect if you'd like to. History of Buxton, Iowa February 12; 11 a.m. at the North Side Library February 12; 2 p.m. at the Franklin Avenue Library Buxton, Iowa is an inspiring example of equity, inclusion, and diversity. Established in 1900, Buxton was a thriving coal-mining town of 5,000 residents, where Blacks and whites were treated equally and both thrived.

DES MOINES PARENT

FEB 2022

Additionally, African Americans, who made up 40% - 55% of Buxton’s population for most of its existence, were doctors, lawyers, teachers, leaders in the community, and more. From Buxton, we can learn what happens when all people are given equal access to opportunities, education, jobs, equal pay, and more. Registration is required. Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa Underground Railroad February 28; 6:30 p.m. at the Franklin Avenue Library “Preacher,” “congressman,” “negro-stealer”: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell was called all of those things during his life. He was called a negro-stealer because he participated in the Iowa Underground Railroad. J.B. Grinnell and other Grinnell residents helped at least 37 fugitive slaves who passed through their town before the Civil War. But some residents opposed this work. David Connon will tell a story of racism, noble actions, and conflict. He will highlight abolitionist John Brown’s visit to Grinnell, and Grinnell’s first riot over the presence of fugitive slaves in the public school. Registration is required. Step Afrika! February 5; 11 a.m. at the Des Moines Civic Center Step Afrika! introduces audiences to the importance of stepping in cultural identity, the use of body percussion as a means of communication, and to the continuity of the use of polyrhythms and audience participation from traditional Zulu dance to contemporary stepping. This production is available as part of the Wellmark Family Series 3-Show Season Ticket Package. Support local black-owned restaurants Looking to eat out? Support local and a black-owned restaurant. Set a weekly goal to try somewhere new. Here is a list of some of our favorites. BLK & Bold - Not a restaurant, but some of the best coffee and teas! Coaches Kolaches G.G.'s Chicken and Waffles Lifestyle Juices Mustang Grill Palm's Caribbean Cuisine Veggie Thumper Food Truck Visit The Jordan House Museum I personally remember field trips to The Jordan House Museum when I was little. I remember each visit being an eye-opening experience and learning so much. During the antebellum period, the Jordan House was a designated stopover on the Underground Railroad. Freedom-seeking slaves hid in the fields, barns, and outbuildings on the property. No one knows for sure, but historians estimate that 1000 per year made the attempt. Most who tried did not have the benefit of someone like John Brown or Harriet Tubman and were not successful. Tours are offered every Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Visit the Kerry James Marshall Sculpture Jump in the car and make a visit to the Kerry James Marshall Sculpture located along the Principal Riverwalk at the corner of Grand & 2nd Avenues in Hansen Triangle Park. Learn more about this sculpture and how to incorporate an entire lesson around this incredible project in Downtown Des Moines.

FEBRUARY QUARTERLY BREAKFAST CITY OF DES MOINES UPDATE WITH DEPUTY CITY MANAGER, MATT ANDERSON In partnership with Des Moines West Side Chamber, Des Moines Downtown Chamber and FuseDSM, hear from Des Moines’ Deputy City Manager, Matt Anderson as he discusses important priorities and issues for the city in 2022, with updates on economic development and infrastructure projects, major initiatives the city will focus on for this year and how they impact the business community, as well as anticipated challenges the city faces. After 10 successful years in real estate development and asset management, Matt joined the City’s Office of Economic Development in 2002. During the next 15 years, he guided Des Moines through $1 billion of downtown residential development and unprecedented job growth. The ensuing addition of hospitality, entertainment, and cultural assets have landed Des Moines on countless national top-10 lists. Matt moved to the City Manager’s Office as Assistant City Manager in 2012, where he continued to oversee economic development efforts and integrated that experience with an expanded roll with the City’s Engineering, Community Development, and Housing departments. Matt was appointed Deputy City Manager in 2018, serving as the City’s chief operating officer. Maintaining the cohesive collaboration of a dozen City departments ensures citizen and business interests are equitably aligned and the City’s strategic plan goals are at the forefront of all decisions. They say that you see growth when you step outside of your comfort zone, but that is much easier said than done, and I think we can all agree. February Marketing Tip: Keep up the hardworking on your social platforms.

HAPPY HEART BY: ANNE CUNDIFF, RD, LD, FAND CORPORATE HY-VEE DIETITIAN

February is the month of “love!” It is the perfect time to show your own heart the attention it deserves during American Heart Month. Each February, American Heart Month is federally designated to raise awareness of heart disease and ways to help prevent it. About 1 in 4 deaths in the U.S. can be attributed to heart disease. Celebrate American Heart Month by showing this vital organ extra love with nutritious recipes, shopping tips and food swaps. Let us first go straight to the heart of the matter with substitutions for cooking. By making these easy swaps, you are able to protect the health of your heart: TO REDUCE SODIUM INTAKE, use less salt than called for in recipes. (This works better for cooking than baking, which requires amounts that are more exact.) Swap unsalted chicken stock for chicken broth, and use no-salt-added canned vegetables. Explore alternative ingredients; for example, coconut

aminos are a lower-sodium alternative to soy sauce. TO REDUCE SUGAR WHEN BAKING, replace 1 cup sugar with ⅔ cup agave sweetener, or ¾ cup maple syrup or ½ cup stevia. TO INCREASE VEGETABLE AMOUNTS, serve 1 cup of vegetables instead of ½ cup. Or swap in spiral vegetable noodles for pasta. Blend plant and animal proteins — combine black beans with ground beef in tacos, meatloaf or burgers Next, while you are shopping keep these heart-healthy tips in mind: READ FOOD NUTRITION LABELS: Look for foods with 2 grams or less of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat and fewer than 140 mg of sodium per serving. Choose foods that have at least 5 grams of fiber per serving. BUY FROZEN WHEN FRESH ISN’T AVAILABLE: When buying frozen or canned fruits and veggies, look for products without added sauces, salt, sugars or syrups. Plain frozen and canned produce is just as nutritious as fresh. ADD GOOD FATS TO YOUR CART: Unsaturated fats like nuts, olive oil, avocados and salmon can reduce the amount of low density (“bad”) lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood and lower the risk of heart disease. CHOOSE WHOLE-GRAIN FOODS: Look for the word “whole-grain” as the first item in the ingredient list instead of enriched flour or “multi-grain.” Whole grains contain the entire grain and are a better source of dietary fiber. Try this delicious and nutritious fresh Mango-Black Bean Salsa for an easy heart-healthy snack:

Zumi Collection is a company that was founded on the love of beautiful, colorful fabrics and uniquely styled clothing and my desire to find them and bring them to you! I am Lu Spaine and I own and operate Zumi Collection. I began this company in 1992 after being downsized from a major corporation. That was a very liberating experience. Since then I have had great fun selling at jazz and cultural events, and conferences around the country. In 2001, I opened a shop in Des Moines near Drake University. This allowed me to expand the product line to include accessories, home décor, and musical instruments. All products originate from countries in Africa, Asia and South America. Many of the importers I work with contribute money back to the communities where the products are created. Certified Fair Trade products are also featured in the shop and the web site. Please feel free to contact me at luspaine@zumi.com with any questions about the products on these pages or if there is an item I can find for you.
