WHAT’S A HEALTHY WORKFORCE WORTH?

There are many good reasons that health benefits are one of the most valuable benefits of employment. Nothing is more important than taking care of your health and the health of your employees and family.

When it comes to health care, it can be expensive and hard to find the right care for your team. That’s why it’s important to have quality, affordable local health care that everyone can access. And, to make sure everyone gets the best care possible, direct primary care puts the patient at the center of care.

Health care is expensive and can be confusing, so it’s important to ensure that your employees have access to simplified, quality, affordable health care personalized to them.

Over the last few years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employers have noticed that there are big differences in health equity and they’re starting to realize that they need to do more to help employees with their healthcare.

IF YOU ARE

We offer SIMPLIFIED, QUALITY, AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE personalized for each employee. This helps keep your team happy and motivated, which is important for longterm success.

Nothing Fishy about Knowing Your Omega-3 Level!

Did you know that 95% of Americans, and 80% of people worldwide, are not getting enough EPA and DHA omega-3s? It is important to know your levels because omega-3s can o er big benefits to your health. Omega-3s can help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help lower triglycerides (20–50%), increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and help prevent hardening of arteries. In addition, omega-3s are important for brain health. These fats are concentrated in brain cells and play an important role in memory and brain function, critical for adults and children. They also can help reduce Inflammation in the body, helping reduce the pain associated with arthritis.

Omega-3 fats are an essential fat, meaning the body is unable to produce omega-3 fats and needs to get this nutrient from food or supplementation. There are three main types of omega-3s. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the marine-based omega-3s that occur mostly in animal foods and algae and are the most important. The best food sources of EPA and DHA omega-3s are fatty, oily fish like salmon, tuna and herring. You can also get these nutrients from omega-3 supplements like fish oil, krill oil or algal oil (vegetarian EPA+DHA). ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) comes from plant sources like chia seed, flax seed and walnuts. Aim for at least 500mg EPA+DHA per day. Get this from eating fatty/oily fish, eating foods fortified with EPA/DHA, and by taking an omega-3 supplement like Nordic Naturals. Pregnant and lactating women should get at least 700 mg per day of EPA+DHA, with at least 300 mg of that as DHA.

Want to find out your omega-3 level? The only way to know if you are getting enough of the right omega-3s is to test your omega-3 level using an Omega-3 Index test. During the month of March, Hy-Vee dietitians will be o ering 2,000 FREE Omega-3 Index Screenings at select locations, thanks to our generous sponsors – GOED and Nordic Naturals! Screenings are first come, first serve with limited appointments available.

You can connect with a Hy-Vee dietitian and get signed up for this screening by visiting: https://www.hy-vee.com/health/hy-vee-dietitians/default.aspx .

All you need:

Blackened Salmon:

Blackened Salmon

Serves 2

2 (4 oz each) skinless Wild Alaska Salmon, ½-to-1-inch-thick

2 tbsp chili lime seasoning rub

1 tbsp packed Hy-Vee brown sugar

2 tbsp Hy-Vee salted butter, melted

Lime zest, for garnish

Lime wedges, for garnish

Avocado-Tomato Salad:

2 cups lightly packed spring mix

1 avocado, seeded, peeled and cut into wedges

½ cup halved Hy-Vee grape tomatoes

2 tbsp Hy-Vee Short Cuts chopped red onions

¼ cup Hy-Vee Select white balsamic and honey vinaigrette

All you do:

1. Pat salmon dry. Measure thickness of fish. Combine seasoning rub and brown sugar in a small bowl. Brush both sides of salmon with butter; coat both sides with seasoning mixture.

2. Preheat a charcoal or gas grill for direct cooking over high heat. If using a charcoal grill, remove grill rack from the grill and place an 8-inch cast-iron skillet directly on the hot coals. If using a gas grill, place skillet on grill rack. Heat for 5-10 minutes.

3. Add salmon to skillet. Sear for 2 to 3 minutes for ½-to-¾-inch-thick fillets or 3 to 4 minutes for 1-inch-thick fillets or until deeply browned. Carefully flip fillets and grill until fish easily flakes when tested with a fork (145 degrees). Garnish salmon with lime zest and lime wedges, if desired. Serve with Avocado-Tomato Salad.

4. Avocado-Tomato Salad: Toss together spring mix, avocado, grape tomatoes and red onions in a medium bowl. Just before serving, toss with Hy-Vee Select white balsamic and honey vinaigrette. Divide between two serving bowls and serve with Blackened Salmon.

The Economic Development committee has been focusing our e orts in the Columbus Park area of Des Moines. We held a neighborhood meeting on January 19th at the Columbus Park shelter. We asked for feedback on what the local community wanted to see in terms of improvements in their part of town. A few high level themes developed throughout the course of the meeting: parking, home ownership promotion, identity and branding, transportation, public safety, nuisance property, walkability and bike paths. The stakeholder feedback we collected can be

utilized to inform potential development projects in the future.

This is an exciting time to join the committee. We continue to be approached by stakeholders from other parts of town. The chamber is here to support the north, east and south side business community of Des Moines. If you are interested in joining our committee please reach out to Dr. Anderson at nocoastconsulting@gmail.com

Celebrate Wins in a Variety of Ways

The workplace is an evolving and robust environment. In early 2022, the Greater Des Moines Partnership commissioned a student of knowledge workers in Greater Des Moines and created the Workforce Trends and Occupancy Playbook to accelerate organization’s adaptation to the new world of work. The Workforce Trends and Occupancy Study (WTOS) Playbook provides employers in Greater Des Moines with detailed insights from hyper-local data and includes actionable steps, called work-plays, that can be taken now to address current and future needs of our local workforce.

How do you motivate and appreciate your employees? Recognizing both the large and smaller accomplish-

ments of teams and individuals encourages them to continue to strive and reminds them that you value their contributions. Celebrate wins a variety of ways is the first work-play in the WTOS Playbook. Success is a process and celebrating your team’s wins along the way will help retain your top talent.

Check out these four easy steps to put this work-play into action.

Job Rides, Inc. – A Mission to Improve the Lives of Iowa Workers

Job Rides is an Iowa-based nonpro t whose mission is to provide people with equal access to employment through transportation. Job Rides partners with businesses, organizations, and individuals to provide a ordable, reliable rides for those who need it most. Work is one of the keys to a better life, and Job Rides’ motto is “Helping people get to work.”

Job Rides, Inc. is a tax-exempt public charity under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3). Job Rides is incorporated in Urbandale, Iowa, with operations currently in the Greater Des Moines metro area.

Job Rides was founded by Bill Raine, president of Raine Recruiting, LLC. From his leadership of a sta ng agency, Bill was aware of the challenges confronting people who found jobs but lacked reliable transportation to their workplaces. A vision of Job Rides was born in 2019, and over the next two years it was incorporated, seated a board of directors, obtained vans and arranged contracts with area manufacturers to begin transporting workers.

The impact of Job Rides in its rst year of operations is illustrated in this table:

Job Rides Operations

Contracts are established with manufacturers to transport employees from speci c pick-up points to workplaces. Job Rides serves a diverse and underserved workforce; riders are primarily immigrants, refugees, homeless shelter residents, and those in work release or reentry programs. Drivers cover routes six days a week for three shifts to companies in Des Moines, Ankeny, Grimes, and Norwalk. Job Rides receives a weekly fee of $50 for each employee transported. The employers agree to the Job Rides “hand up guarantee” which states that the company agrees to not charge more than 50 percent of the fee to the rider. The collected weekly fee of $50 per rider only partially covers expenses of driver wages, van maintenance, insurance, and fuel, making donations and grants critical to our mission. Demand for services has grown steadily since Job Rides launched in January 2022, with a wait list of companies seeking workers and individuals seeking work and rides. This unique program has great potential to lift Iowans from poverty through stable employment. Workers with consistent and reliable transportation are far more likely to remain in jobs and improve their standard of living.

Dee Zee, Inc., a Des Moines-based manufacturer, contracts with Job Rides for multiple shifts. Sarah Tighe, MA, Talent Recruiter, shared the following testimonial:

Job Rides has been a lifesaver for us at Dee Zee. We can’t thank Bill and his team enough for seeing that there was a need for a program like this in the Des Moines area. We have been working closely with Refugee Services throughout Des Moines to provide arriving refugees with job opportunities. These employees have become amazing assets to our company, but after a few months if they do not have a license and car, they have no way to get to work due to no longer being eligible for transportation through government services.

Job Rides found a solution that we are incredibly grateful for, as are our employees. It gives these individuals more time to get acclimated to the area until they are able to get a license and transportation for themselves. A huge thank you to Bill and his team for being so helpful and easy to work with, while providing such an essential program to our area. Without this program, we would lose a lot of incredible sta .

Another testimonial comes from Edgar Ramirez, Workforce Liaison for the Bureau of Refugee Services (BRS) at the Iowa Department of Human Services. Edgar is now a board member and o ers this insight on the great demand for transportation services in Iowa. The main focus of my position is to connect employers to refugees and vice-versa. However, between the two there are barriers that often make these connections di cult or nearly impossible. One barrier that is often identi ed during conversations with employers throughout Iowa is the lack of transportation. Often places of employment are located far from job seekers' homes. Public transportation is not adequate or available. Job Rides' purpose helps eliminate the lack of transportation and enhances quality of life for underserved populations by making the connection to quality employment a reality.

Job Rides operates on revenue from riders, support from private donors, and corporate and foundation grants. Donations and grants are essential to grow the organization and meet the demand for transportation services in Iowa. I am happy to talk with you personally about Job Rides’ impact and potential.
