Zines are scrappy. Zines are inspired. Zines are audacious.

Pronounced ZEEN and short for fanZINE (or is it magaZINE?), zines are the ultimate expression of the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) attitude.

Zines aren’t published—they’re self-published. They don’t have a big budget or print run—they’re supposed to be handed or mailed to you, not bought in a storefront. They’re not conventional, but that’s the point: anyone can make a zine. Whether it’s sci-fi fans in the 30s, punks in the 70s, riot grrrl feminists in the 90s, it’s people outside the mainstream who really, really care. And to let you into a community they love and believe in, they’re going to share something with you that they made with their own blood, sweat, and tears.

So, get ready for this year’s ZINE ISSUE of EMPIRE TIMES—it’s arts and crafts time. Grab some paper, a dozen coloured markers, and a pair of scissors. We do hope you’ll stick around, at least for a little while, but you don’t need us. Just stick to the ethos: No one can stop you from Doing It Yourself.

Even if you don’t have official roles in your group, you can be the unofficial leader, because let’s face it, without you nothing would get done. Now let’s put that same energy you put into helping others into helping yourself.

Be the rock you were born to be, a reliable and resilient person.

Be strong, and to be strong you must exercise to stay fit. But remember, exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy, and happy people just don’t kill people. So you will never want to kill anyone, which I hope you didn’t want to do before you read this horoscope, but that’s ok if you did just a little bit.

Instead of moulding yourself to each and every conversation you should insert your own interests into them.

Start a conversation about what you like to talk about and let others jump in instead of waiting for others to talk. Once you have completed that goal start a campaign about something campaign worthy in your local community, inspire social change. Even if that social change is lowering coffee prices.

Do you remember the Sylvanian Families?

Well it’s a sign that you should craft little houses and make a town out of Lego or sticks or anything else you can think of.

Having a home, a place to cherish, is important to everyone, even Lego people. While you are building homes for others go and decorate your room, add a new poster or just buy yourself a new pillowcase.

Go do an art class and paint a canvas, or if that is too expensive buy the cheapest canvas you can find from a Reject Shop, for no more than $5.

Then go and paint it with whatever comes to mind. Once you have created your masterpiece then you can put it up in your room and admire your work. Of course if painting isn’t your thing go to your nearest op shop and again find the cheapest $5 painting you can to hang up.

Next time you go for a walk around campus you should go and notice all the different tiles that are used.

You are also allowed to analyse and see if every tile is in the perfect spot and none have been cut up and squished to fit. If you do find one out of place email us and let us know, we will help you start a petition to fix the monstrosity.

The answer might be zero, but the answer also might be one, and one free coffee is better than none. While you are complimenting people make sure to let the group you sit with in your tutorial that they are all doing amazing for showing up today. Winter is here and it is miserable.

Challenge: go watch Everything Everywhere All at Once and try not to cry or feel deeply moved. Report back and let me know how you go, this is an impossible task for you lot. Then you can go and put googly eyes on everything and feel deeply emotional about it. Even if you don’t watch the movie, you should put googly eyes on things and make them your friends, the more you have the better.

Start training today and by the end of the semester you WILL be able to climb the hill to education without needing a break. It can happen, I know it can because I did it. Yes, that’s right your horoscope writer can climb the hill to education without a break, and you can do it too. While you’re there improving yourself, stop eating random food that tastes good and then gives you a stomach-ache.

The best thing about completing your puzzle is there won’t be any annoying American tourists yelling in the background while you do it.

You should really start that hobby you are too scared to start this semester. Even if that hobby is going to the pub with your mates once a week.

Losing at trivia night is a memory everyone should have with their friends at least once.

Just letting you know that next time you see someone kick one of those wildflowers it’s ok to get upset about it. Nature is beautiful and even if they are technically a weed they don’t deserve to get kicked like that. The annoying person in your tutorial who acts like a pest doesn’t get their head kicked off, so neither should the flowers. At least nature has a positive impact on the world.

Facilities Girl Rates: serene places to read a book on campus

By Vicki Griffin Amid the hustle and bustle of campus, it comes time to put the phone on airplane mode and let it fall to the bottom of your bag. Time to settle back with a physical object in your hand—a bound book, with tangible pages. Where your login can’t time out and interrupt the reading experience, where the screen doesn’t flicker with notifications drawing your eyes from the page, for people reacting to messages in Microsoft Teams or emails that are somehow never really very important, without the AI chatbot eagerly offering to auto-summarise, in dot points, what the book has to say.

But, what makes a great place to read? Of course, you will know, this is very subjective. But join me on a journey to weigh up seven options on campus I have tried.

5. The chairs outside Bon Voyage coffee shop Pros: There are good vibes here, a fresh breeze, an appropriate amount of shelter. In easy reach of a food and beverage vendor, the furniture lacks a snug or cosy factor, but this is a great place to open a book in spring and summer. As an added bonus, particularly if you are enjoying a snack, it is almost guaranteed you will become acquainted with the local birdlife.

Cons: The local birdlife are shameless in pursuit of their objective, stealing your food. They also lack respect for or even a basic understanding of personal space boundaries.

4. The grassy area beside the lake on campus Pros: Behold the beauty of the campus lake! There are ducks, there is greenery, there is shade…a more idyllic space does not exist, perhaps, at any South Australian University. Lift your eyes from the page of your book, let them unfocus, allow time to simply pass as you breathe the fresh air and simply be among nature.

Cons: There are also bees, and they are attracted to you, especially if you use floral scented soap; I know this from personal experience.

3. The chairs at the far entrance of the hub Pros: These are the most comfortable outdoor chairs I have ever sat on in my life, spacious, and you can settle back and occasionally lift your eyes from your book to take in the stunning views all the way down the hill to the ocean.

Cons: Not very sheltered from the elements—bring a big coat or blanket during the cooler months. Also, this is a thoroughfare within earshot of the big screen over the plaza that sometimes plays loud videos, which can be distracting.

2. The bleachers just outside the library exit on the second floor, looking onto the entrance to the hub Pros: This is the best place to be if it is raining. You sit facing a beautiful huge window, that makes you feel so cosy when it is streaming with rain. Especially if the rain has been unexpected, and you are now watching people sprint for the bus trying to avoid the inclement weather.

Cons: This is a very popular spot and so you definitely need to stake your place in advance. Best on weekends or evenings when demand is not so high.

1. Armchairs in Sturt Library Pros: Once you’ve worked out how to enter this building (it took me five attempts on my first try), you’ll find a welcoming space with a surplus of book displays. Walk toward the communal area: over there, by the window, a cosy nook lies in wait. Ignore the comically small table. With a sunny window behind you, settle inside. Finally, time to slip inside that novel you’ve been reading...

Cons: Something about the subjects taught in this location attract the kind of people who are extroverted to go to the library in big groups to have extensive conversations. This is totally fine—actually kind of nice—but a real change from the immersive quiet of Bedford Park Library. Eventually, you may grow fond of it. But I’ve heard parking is hard enough for the students at this campus already—so let’s keep this hidden gem a secret, between you and me.

Australia is not a poor country; it is one of the biggest Gad exporters.

Australia is swimming in resources.

Yet we are told there is nothing that can be done. That high fuel prices are inevitable.

Nothing Can Be Done!

Except…. Tax the companies making billions off us.

The oil and gas companies are making profits from Australian land and resources and paying next to nothing in Tax. Billions are leaving our country while we count dollars at the pump as if it is a luxury to exist.

They give us a temporary fuel excise cut because things have got politically spiky. It’s a band-aid, a headline. But we will soon go back to the bleeding…

The system isn’t broken; it is working exactly how it was designed to.

Everyday life expenses are just tough enough that you are exhausted, and travel and transport costs are just high enough that you stay stuck.

Making survival so much effort that you have no energy to fight back.

Petrol and diesel are not just fuel; they’re a form of control.

We fight for it, every commute,

every missed opportunity, every dollar siphoned for fuel from our food budget, just to keep moving and getting to our low-paid jobs, just to have more than half go on rent.

“Live within your means” has always been something we were told. Build to your goals, start small and with what you can afford.

This has now become an insult. My means are no longer renting a physical house; they are owning and living in a tent.

You think I am being dramatic… The harsh reality is that for many of us, our rent is already over 50% of our income. My rent is 75% of my income and is about to go up.

Move you say… to where?

Rents are no cheaper anywhere, and thanks to high rent, high electricity and cost of living, I have no savings to afford the move.

country, struggling to afford the basics?

While big companies walk away with the lot….

Tax them properly. We know this works.

Build public housing, government-funded, not private investor-funded. We have done it before with great success.

Let’s stop pretending this isn’t needed or that it won’t help.

Because this is not a crisis; it is a choice, a choice to keep us struggling, keep us suffering.

I will never be able to buy a house; I will be lucky if I can continue to afford to rent one, let alone a room in one. The reality is that, for many of us, the only hope we have of owning a home is inheriting one if we are lucky enough to have parents who own one.

Here is the question they don’t want you to ask: Why are we, as a resource-rich 23

So I’m out here in the ‘real’ world.

I’ve had a couple of ‘big girl jobs’

even the most progressive workplaces, and that’s dark.

Once I had a meeting. With a woman I look up to.

Where she lectured me about how

She said hide your emotions, or they will be used against you, even happiness, she said. When they see you are happy, they will try to hurt you.

As a woman in the workplace, you need to hide your emotions, or they will be used against you.

A manager told me that. Someone who wanted desperately to be my mentor.

Me, a raging little feminist straight out of uni, I was crushed to hear it.

Why can’t we be real?

Is being yourself a feminist act?

Is honesty a feminist act?

What hell are we in where honesty is such a rebellion?

Working harder, being stronger, just taking it. I’ve heard it all, but I’ve also been told that feminism is over.

It’s not needed. It’s been done. We’re equal.

How can that be true? I’ve walked on tippy toes around men twice my age so their fragile egos wouldn’t get hurt when they’ve done half the work I have. But I can’t be honest when an undermanaged workplace makes me anxious?

Hide it. Even happiness.

I sit here with all of these women in management, and I’m told never to show any truth.

Truth-telling must be a feminist act then, and I’m happy to do it. I refuse to be a part of the next generation of broken women.

My passion runs this place. Without my passion, no work would have been done, but I’m not a man. So my passion is overemotional.

So here I am, being hurt by women who hate themselves.

That was not the first, nor the last time, I’ve been told to bite my tongue.

Once I was told by a woman I respected that I needed to learn to bite my tongue.

I knew the kind of relationship that woman had with that man, that comment made me incredibly angry.

She was my elder, and instead of teaching me how to stand up for myself, she told me to shut up, to take up less space.

What kind of leadership is that?

Never tell me to take up less space, never tell me to shut up. I was angry and I had every right to be.

I’m still really fucking angry.

So please, for the love of all that is out there: take up all the space you need, wherever and whenever you want, please be yourself, unapologetically, and never ever bite your tongue. It isn’t meant to bleed.

I was told this in response to something I said to a man.

To a man that, quite frankly, I have never respected.

I think I was about eighteen when this happened.

We live in the Era of the Leviathan, an age where the people give up more of their liberty for security from the State. One only must look at the language behind the far-right politics of MAGA, Reform UK, One Nation, etc. Constantly referencing the ‘rule of law’ as justification for their attacks on migrants, POC, and the LGBTQIA+.

Criticize ICE abuse? “They should have been here legally then.” Question police brutality? “They are violent criminals.” Defend queer existence? “Paedophile.”

“Rapist.” “Assaulter.” For many, to break the rule of law is to lose one’s rights.

If criminals can have their rights taken, then all the government must do to take your rights is label you a criminal.

If we truly want to fight for freedom for all (as I hope you reading this does) then we must fight for the rights of criminals, we must fight for the scoundrels.

This isn’t to accept acts of violence and antisocial behaviour as morally acceptable, I in no way endorse murder. However, it is to stand by the position that the State alone cannot be the Judge, Jury, and Executioner. To accept harsh punitive justice, such as death penalty for any crime (yes even the most horrific) 31

is to accept that the State has the right to abuse and kill. To endorse, however jokingly, the torture, or sexual assault, of criminals convicted of certain crimes, is to endorse that behaviour wholesale.

I understand the drive to see wrongdoers punished deeply for their crimes.

Especially in cases of horrific acts. However, this provides a railroad to tyranny. Consider Florida where a bill has been pushed that would make child rape punishable by death, Ron DeSantis the governor of Florida stated “We think that in the worst of the worst cases, the only appropriate punishment is the ultimate punishment, and so this bill sets up a procedure to be able to challenge that precedent.”

Critics have pointed out that this will discourage victims from speaking up and encourage rapists to kill their victims. DeSantis calls these critics defenders of child rapists.

However, a much less touched upon danger, is another bill being pushed, which equates exposing children to transgender individuals to sexual abuse. Together these bills could easily be weaponised to make being trans publicly a child sex

crime and therefore enforce the death penalty.

This same tactic was once used against African Americans. Black men were deemed hypersexual and dangerous to white women, then lynched for such ‘crimes’ as looking, whistling, or walking on the wrong side of the street.

In 1931, the Scottsboro Boys were sentenced to death on fabricated rape charges by an all-white jury. In 1955 Emmett Till was murdered at 14 for “whistling at a white store clerk.” The machinery was the same, first dehumanize, then criminalize, then kill.

Currently that same machinery is being levelled at trans individuals, but it will not stop there.

There exist two options if we wish to stop this turning cog, that crushes many under it. Either abolish the state, which I would.

Or, failing that, refuse to let the state decide who is human. To demand rehabilitative justice, to defend even the worst of humanity from the clutches of the Leviathan. Either way the call is clear, defend the scoundrel.

Because the cog never stops turning, only finding new people to crush.

Collector’s Edition Kailani

--Collecting things is a good way to bring joy into your life by literally surrounding yourself with the things you love. It’s something all of us do, in varying capacities: with items like clothes, furniture, DVDs, figurines, and other trinkets. To some, the word ‘collector’ is a dirty word as it implies you are a hoarder, but really, it’s being a hoarder without the rotting food under a pile of old clothes (ew).

It’s also a good way to have a physical hobby as the world moves into the digital age of renting and not actually owning anything. For example, you can pay for a Netflix subscription and watch its movies anytime – but once you stop paying, those movies are gone from your ‘collection’. So, in my eyes, collectors are those who have physical possessions – things that you own and can’t be taken from you when there is no Wi-Fi or power to a device.

Additionally, it gives you a piece of personality, a talking point when you are forced to give a fun fact about yourself. As boring or as niche as your collection might seem to some, you should be proud of it and celebrate it. It’s better to be weird and strange than to be tedious and bland.

If you’re still reading as I’ve been yapping on, you’ve probably been wondering what things I collect. I like to collect CDs, as I am a uni student and therefore my car is old and has a CD player. My car runs on CDs, and I do not connect my phone to it. I also have a couple of pin boards at home, collecting any papers, cards or pamphlets I like, cutting them out and pinning them to the board along with pictures I print off.

I’ve taken more lives than all wars combined, I’m even the reason some wars came to mind.

I am built for motion, but spend most time still— my networks of waiting reshape every hill.

I isolate people in pavement and lines, I promise freedom but I have strict confines.

I drain all your money and take up your time, even though there are options that won’t cost a dime.

Most people in Australia use me every day, and rarely question the role that I play.

There is a particular kind of tiredness that sleep does not touch.

You wake up and the first thought is not what you have to do, but how much of yourself you have left to do it with, the coffee helps for twenty minutes, the shower helps while the water is hot. Then the day starts, and you are already behind, already answering questions, already making decisions for people who seem to believe your capacity is infinite.

In your twenties, exhaustion felt noble – almost cool.

It meant you were building something. You could run on adrenaline and takeaway food and the certainty that all this effort was leading somewhere. In your thirties, you told yourself the pressure was temporary.

Once the mortgage settled, once the promotion came through, once you got to a better place.

Then you reach your forties and realise this might be the better place. You have become competent enough that everyone relies on you. Experienced enough that problems find their way to your desk. Calm enough that people assume you are coping. You are the one who remembers birthdays, books the appointments, follows up the overdue invoices, checks on ageing parents, answers late night messages, and somehow still turns up to work pretending this is all manageable.

You cannot remember the last time you felt genuinely excited about anything. Not unhappy exactly, not in crisis, just worn thin, like fabric washed too many times.

The days are a blur of obligations. You spend hours solving problems that do not matter to you, then come home to more decisions, what to cook, what to pay, which thing can no longer be ignored. You fantasise about silence, about a room with no one asking anything of you. And then the guilt arrives, because from the outside your life looks fine, good, even. You have people who love you, a stable job, a house full of evidence that you have built something substantial. So why do you feel like you are disappearing inside it?

Maybe burnout in your forties is not dramatic. It is quieter than that.

It is forgetting words mid-sentence.

It is crying in the car for reasons you cannot name.

It is looking at your inbox and feeling your heart sink.

It is resenting people you love because they need you.

It is being so tired that even rest feels like another task to organise.

It is wondering whether this is just adulthood, and whether everyone else is better at pretending.

Your body starts sending messages your mind tries to ignore, headaches, tight shoulders, waking at 3 a.m. with your thoughts running laps. A kind of bone deep fatigue that no vitamin seems to fix. You promise yourself you will slow down after this week, after this project, after this crisis. But there is always another week, another project, another crisis.

You begin to miss the person you used to be. The one who had hobbies, the one who read books for pleasure, the one who could sit still without feeling guilty, the one who believed life would eventually become easier, and yet somewhere underneath all the exhaustion is a small stubborn voice that says this cannot be all there is.

Maybe recovery starts there. Not with a dramatic reinvention or a plane ticket to somewhere quiet. Just the honest admission that you are running on empty. That competence is not the same as wellbeing. That being needed by everyone else does not mean you are required to abandon yourself.

In your forties, burnout feels like grief for the energy you once had and the version of yourself you misplaced along the way.

One-pan baked feta mac and cheese

By Adeline Lau, Associate Lecturer, Nutrition and Dietetics, College of Nursing & Health Sciences.Serves 4. Estimated 5 mins preparation time, and 50mins to 1 hour cook time

Ingredients 250g elbow pasta 3 cups full cream milk (or any milk of your choice) 1 cup drained sundried tomato halves, roughly chopped 50g parmesan cheese, finely grated 200g Greek-style feta, crumbled 120g baby spinach leaves 1/4 bunch parsley, leaves picked, finely chopped Ground black pepper (optional, to taste) Dried chilli flakes (optional, to taste)

Directions Step 1. Preheat oven to 200°C, or 180°C fan-forced.

Step 2. Add pasta, milk, sundried tomato and half of the parmesan to a large baking dish.

Step 3. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Mix to combine.

Step 4. Place feta block in the middle of the dish. Bake for 25 minutes or until feta begins to melt.

Step 5. Remove baking dish from oven and stir to combine feta with pasta mixture. Add in spinach and 1/2 cup water.

Stir to combine further.

Step 6. Place baking dish back in the oven to bake for another 25 minutes or until pasta is cooked. Serve topped with remaining parmesan, parsley and chilli flakes (optional).

i dont know what i want, but, that i do want. i dont know what i want, but, that i do know; at the end of the story, all the creature wanted was to be loved; to be in love.
