Interview

Meet the Locals We recently launched fashion bras for DD to G cup bras. The range is called Busted. These women have very few options out there and ours are kickass, but still wellengineered. Melbourne is a really exciting place to be, I love where it is going. What excites you most about getting involved in Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival? As a new business in a crowded world, it's great to have the support of VAMFF. We want to reach as many women as possible. We know how hard it is to find [the products] we are offering and we want people to know that we exist. We’re hosting a runway for VAMFF. Customers can then ‘shop the runway’ at our two open studios in Malvern, where we will be offering 20% off. We donate comfy cotton undies to women in need, so every sale supports that too.

with Kelly Barrett of Silent Arrow

Lingerie label Silent Arrow is a love letter to women who are honest, brave and unapologetic. Its lineup of bras, underwear and swimwear is an alternative to unflattering and uncomfortable lingerie. As a lover of streetwear and design, founder Kelly Barrett takes her passion and adds a unique spin to each garment. Think architectural lines and mesh, paired with graphic text statements. We sat down with Kelly to chat entrepreneurship, female empowerment and the evolution of lingerie.

South Magazine

What sets Silent Arrow apart from other lingerie brands? The lingerie business is one that is based on either seduction or unattractive practicality – there could be a whole feminist theory on it. Sexy lingerie often doesn’t fit well. And as women, we blame our bodies, rarely the product. Wires dig, materials scratch, we have over-hanging bits and we think there’s something wrong with us. You then get comfortable, but super daggy lingerie that makes you want to hide everything quickly.

I wanted to make high fashion lingerie that is actually comfortable and works with a woman’s body. I have never had any desire to be high-end, so it is important to me that my price points are accessible. It’s unusual to find an independent lingerie label that can offer thin foam moulded cups and underwire construction. It’s really hard to do, the minimum requirements for manufacturing are huge. A lot of labels need to answer to investors and dilute their message, I’m lucky I don’t have to do that. I can be a feminist brand and have swear words on my garments without needing sign-off. How has Silent Arrow contributed to shaping the Melbourne fashion scene? The worn-to-be-seen trend has been gaining more and more traction over the past two years. Tops that are see-through, or dropped underarms worn with longline bras, and bralettes worn as tops are common now. Our range is designed to layer with clothing. It’s more in line with fashion wear than regular lingerie boutiques.

Your label is aimed at empowering women. Tell us about the ladies in your life who empower you. I have my girl gang that challenge my thinking and are brave enough to be honest, which is a rare thing. I learn so much from them. I always feel loved and supported for being exactly myself. Do you have any career advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? Most people have no idea, don’t listen to them, try and follow your gut. The most successful things I’ve done with Silent Arrow, I’ve been told by others not to do. Where do you see Silent Arrow in five years? Our wholesale business in The States is growing fast, in five years I am sure we will have a much bigger presence there. By then I would liked to have donated one million pairs of undies to women in need.

Shop the Silent Arrow Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival runway during Fashion Weekend at Level 1, 220 Glenferrie Road, Malvern. wearesilentarrow.com

Interview

In Full Swing The SURFACE Project isn’t a traditional jazz band. Bassist Claire Cross describes it as ‘jazzrock’ with textural components, influenced by musicians that blur the line between jazz and other contemporary music.

We caught up with Claire to chat about the upcoming show, Björk and Melbourne record shops. Hi Claire, can you tell us a little bit about The SURFACE Project? The SURFACE Project is a six-piece ensemble that I have been running for about four years now. We make use of a combination of acoustic and electric instruments. We’ve played at a great range of venues in Melbourne…as well as programs like the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, the Tilde New Music Festival and more.

I don’t think I was particularly desperate to play or learn bass, but it seemed cool and no one else was doing it, so I figured why not? It’s been my thing ever since and I love it. Can you tell us about the Björk: Interpreted show at Stonnington Jazz? I’m so excited about this show. I have been working with our amazing guest vocalists to put together a set of songs they love and want to interpret. All of these artists and the whole band have been hugely influenced by Björk’s music over the years, and this show will be a special way to honour that and find new ways to reimagine Björk’s music through our own lens. Who will be performing alongside you? This performance will feature guest vocalists Mama Alto, Georgie Darvidis, Nkechi Anele, Hannah Cameron and Tom Barton. In the ensemble I have two other original members from The SURFACE Project – Liam Werrett and Cameron Sexton. We also have Harry

Is this your first time at Stonnington Jazz? This will be my first time performing at Stonnington Jazz! It’s nice to be able to tick this great festival off the list.

↓ What excites you most about this performance? I spend so much time performing in the inner north of Melbourne and in quite small venues, so I’m excited to play to an audience from a different part of the city. It will also be so wonderful to use the incredible space at Chapel Off Chapel to present this concert – I think that’s something that I feel really energised about, having a beautiful setting to play in. Where’s your favourite place to wind down? The Windsor Deli has some of the most outrageously good cookies I’ve ever had. I love Borsch, Vodka & Tears on Chapel Street – it’s so homely and cosy. I’m a sucker for Melbourne-made goods and record shops, so walking down Greville Street and checking out what’s on offer is also something I enjoy on a sunny day, coffee in hand of course!

You can catch The SURFACE Project at Stonnington Jazz in May. stonningtonjazz.com.au

South Magazine

How did the band form? I put the group together a few years ago when I’d just finished studying my undergraduate degree at uni, out of the desire to have a vehicle to compose my original ideas and music.

When did you first get into electric bass? I’ve always played music in some form since being a child, and when I was in late high school, I had to choose an instrument to specialise in.

Cook on keyboards/synths, Xani Kolac on violin and effects, and Anita Quayle on cello and effects.

5

If you’re familiar with Melbourne’s local music scene, you would’ve seen the group at countless jazz bars across the city. If you haven’t, now’s your chance. The SURFACE Project will perform at this year’s Stonnington Jazz festival in May, reinterpreting music by Björk to present a genre-bending jazz show.

I also really wanted to work with some of my close friends and share in an experience together. I always love watching musicians perform together who you can see have a strong bond. It’s exciting and interactive, and I was really striving to find a way to achieve that same sensation in our performances.

Any place that stocks a good bottle of rosé gets our seal of approval. The brains behind Toorak Organic Wines are also the owners of Meloni Vini and Bertoldi Vini wineries – so they know their stuff. The retail space was created with the goal of offering customers top-quality liquor, and its lineup does just that. Expect a premium selection of white, red and rosé wines including vermentino, pinot grigio, cab sauv, moscato and more. Selling only bottles that are preservative-free, the store boasts a ‘healthier’ range of wines for the diet-conscious.

Armadale locals will know that Giorgio’s has been a High Street mainstay for years. Most recently, the restaurant has undergone a major facelift, with a bright new interior hosting diners from day to night. The menu spans traditional Italian fare – linguine marinara, eggplant agnolotti – to new Asian fusion dishes, including pork gyoza, kingfish ceviche and Japanese Hokkaido scallops. Also on offer is an impressive range of smoothies, boasting flavour combinations of kale, berry and acai, to pineapple, celery and avocado. Fresh new look, same authentic Giorgio’s.

Finding a health-conscious brunch destination can be the ultimate Sunday morning struggle. MOM cafe, however, is a hub for those with specific dietary and digestive needs. Its team of chefs, doctors, nutritionists and naturopaths have curated an easy-to-follow menu with paleo, FODMAP, GAPS, vegan and yeast, dairy, nut and gluten-free options. The selection includes dishes like an antioxidant super salad and a macrobiotic buddha bowl with cured salmon. You can wash it all down with a vitality organic tea, or an immune-boosting hot chocolate.

Pinot Gris Mojito PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOLLY ENGELHARDT

Photographed on location at Vintage Cellars, 481 Toorak Road, Toorak vintagecellars.com.au

Our recommendation come the end of a long week? Treating yourself to a homemade cocktail. The kind folk at 6Ft6 have shared their recipe for a pinot gris mojito, so we popped into Vintage Cellars Toorak to whip one up.

26

Combining mint, lime and agave, you can easily mix this concoction in your own kitchen – no fancy cocktail equipment necessary. ↓ YOU WILL NEED 2 wedges of lime 1/2 cup of mint leaves 1 part agave syrup 6Ft6 Pinot Gris Soda water, to top

METHOD 1. Add ice cubes to a 1L jug. 2. Combine lime, mint leaves and agave syrup in the jug and muddle gently with a wooden spoon. 3. Add 6Ft6 Pinot Gris and top up with a splash of soda water.

South Magazine

4. Stir with a wooden spoon and enjoy. *If you like your mojito even sweeter, try swapping out lime for a dash of coconut juice.

If you have a penchant for homewares, we’d recommend a visit to Aura Home. The Malvern concept store is brimming with interior essentials, stocking a range of goods for your bedroom, bathroom, living, kitchen and outdoor areas. From pastel cushions to hallway rugs and pendant lighting, its extensive range of high-quality decor promises to impress. You’ll also find a selection of gifts, spanning salt bath scrubs, scented candles and platter sets. As well as the brick and mortar store, Aura Home offers its entire range online, with speedy same-day dispatch for Melburnians.

ByAzumi isn’t an ordinary florist. The studio space on Toorak Road instead offers a wholistic approach to floristry, specialising in flowers for events as well as providing courses and workshops. Founder Azumi Ishikawa draws on her knowledge of European and Japanese traditions to create expressive floral designs. Nature is at the heart of her work, inspiring each arrangement. A selection of design courses are offered at the studio, including floristry for beginners, garden bouquet lessons and flower crown workshops. The studio is open to the public from Wednesday to Saturday, or by appointment at other times.

Nimble knows a thing or two about functional athleisure. Founders Vera Yan and Katia Santilli took their love for fashion and active lifestyles, to create a range of comfortable workout wear. Bras, shorts and leggings make up the collection, and each garment is lined with Nimble’s signature Compresslite fabric. Made with a blend of recycled PET and spandex, the material ensures durability and promises a lightweight feel. With moisture-wicking technology, flattering fits and a style selection that makes for perfect brunch wear, we’ve finally got a reason to swing by the gym on Sundays.

If you’ve paid Hawksburn Village a visit of late, you may have noticed a new addition. Shy Pony opened up shop in December last year, bringing with it a curated selection of fashion and accessories from around the globe. The boutique is run by the duo behind footwear label Jam Squared Style, who have stocked the store with labels and pieces you’d find in their own wardrobes. The aim is to curate a selection of essentials from both local and international brands. Head in-store to get your fix of footwear, clothing and accessories from the likes of Superga, Annukka Byron Bay, Naudic and RES Denim.
