Green Day were kids from working-c lass backgrounds who came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley . Even though they had released two records prior ( 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994’ s Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk pop tha t sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy Award. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning, while

entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live sho ws. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. Green Day’s highly anticipated album ¡Uno!, the first in a trilogy of new releases, was released on September 25, 2012, followed by ¡Dos! on November 13 and ¡Tré! on December 11 in the same year. The band will headline Australia’s Soundwave Festival in February and March of 2014.

RICHIE SAMBORA Celebrated American rock icon Richie Sambora has become known throughout his remarkable 30-year career for his raw vocals, indelible songwriting and world-class guitar playing. ROB ZOMBIE A rock icon and auteur filmmaker with insight and unlimited vision, Rob Zombie has continuously challenged audiences as he stretches the boundaries of music, film, and publishing. Now, the seven-time Grammynominated recording artist releases his fifth solo album, Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor. As a musician, Rob Zombie has sold over 15 million albums worldwide to date. His last studio album was the long-awaited Hellbilly Deluxe 2. The album came a decade after its predecessor, Hellbilly Deluxe, the album that established Zombie as a solo artist after the breakup of multiplatinum group White Zombie. MASTODON Mastodon have never really done anything the “conventional” way. The Atlanta-based band formulated their own brand of highlyskilled hard rock over a decade ago when others were rehashing ‘80s metal, and went on to mastermind a string of complex concept albums while much of the music world was centred on making digestible singles. Mastodon have received an outpouring of critical kudos along with public praise from respected icons from Metallica to The Melvins, The Flaming Lips and CeeLo Green and back, and they’ve been humbled by the magnitude of appreciation. But rather than taking time to revel, they prefer to focus their attention on pushing musical boundaries even deeper by exploring their own creative process to the fullest.

PLACEBO Welcome to a happy accident. When Brian Molko – singer/songwriter with bleak-hearted rock three-piece, Placebo – began writing his band’s seventh studio album, his intention was to sketch out enough tracks to make the B3 EP. What followed was a splurge of creativity and grand ambition that resulted in Loud Like Love, a release that marks Placebo as a band big on heart-scarred intimacy as well as anthemic pop hooks. The band’s seventh studio album feels like a slow-burning addition to their 12 million-selling back catalogue. For example, I recently read somewhere that Brian May from Queen has a PhD in astrophysics. What’s your favourite/the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? There’s a giant time vortex spinning in the corner of my kitchen. Sometimes late at night you can hear ancient screams coming from it. I’m not exactly sure how it got there, but I throw all my garbage into it. What’s the best advice you’ve gotten from another musician? One time while I was recording in the studio, Bootsy Collins entered the room and immediately opened and drank a can of Vanilla Coke without stopping. He looked at me with a sickly frown and said, “Don’t drink that, man. It tastes like medicine.” To this day I’ve never tried Vanilla Coke. Later he came back and drank another one.

KORN Certain bonds last forever. No matter what happens, they can’t be bent, bruised, or broken. There’s something indescribable that fastens them together, and the links only tighten with time. The members of Korn built that kind of bond back in 1993 the first time that Jonathan Davis, James “Munky” Shaffer, Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu, and Brian “Head” Welch decided to make music as a unit. After six seminal albums, two Grammy Award wins, and countless sold out shows, Head left the group in 2004 to face down the demons of addiction on his own. Nevertheless, they kept the door open for the return of their brother. In 2012, a triumphant and tear-filled reunion happened onstage as the group headlined the Carolina Rebellion festival with Head reprising his legendary part on Blind. That brings us to Korn’s eleventh studio album, The Paradigm Shift. With Head back in the fold, the group retreated to where it all began—Bakersfield. Writing new music in a hometown rehearsal spot, everything immediately felt as if it was meant to be.

We usually listen to It’s A Long Way To The Top by AC/ DC but throwing Swedish Fish at drummer Flip for some reason calms my nerves. In Japanese culture, slurping noodles while you eat is socially acceptable. What’s something socially unacceptable in Western culture that you would like to change? People taking quick offense when discussing sex, politics or God.

Sumo wrestling I’d say Bower for obvious reasons. Boxing – Phil – undefeated. What’s your favourite/the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? I‘d have to say our house. How did it get there? My own two hands. And for shock value our dog Scooter also known as “Crazy Legs”, completely blind, crippled, and crazy. Have you got any Japanese “lawsuit” guitars? If so what’s your favourite piece and where’d you find it? Actually I do. Some Les Paul rip off from the ‘70s and it has terrible effect modulators in the volume/ tone cavity. Plays like dog shit but sounds like an acid trip. Buddy of mine died in a motorcycle chase trying to outrun the cops and I took it from his house after the funeral (we were 16).

Your band are forced to wrestle each other in a sumo tournament. Who would win and why? I think Greg because his legs are huge and he is not the tallest so trying to move that motherfucker would be really hard. What’s your favourite/the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? Well it’s not still in my house at the moment but I did have a 3000-year-old mummy bone in my house not too long ago. A friend of mine is a forensic anthropologist and let me have it for a bit. Did they have AIDS back then? I had it on my kitchen table. Is that bad? What’s a film or book that has blown your mind lately? Despicable Me 2. It was deep man.

GLASSJAW Intense. It’s the only suitable word to describe the live shows of Long Island, New York band Glassjaw – and even that word isn’t powerful enough. This post-hardcore band – led by vocalist Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck – have been dominating the underground music scene since 1993. While they only have a couple of albums and a handful of EPs out, if they released any more, Earth’s orbital path would be significantly altered, causing severe consequences for the Solar System. One of the most influential and historic bands on the Soundwave lineup, do not miss these guys.

PANIC! AT THE DISCO From its glittery synth-based, drum-heavy sound, to its playful, celebratory subject matter, to the Rat Pack-inspired imagery on the cover, to the title itself (a line from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas author Hunter S. Thompson), Panic! At The Disco’s Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die finds the band, for the first time in its nearly ten-year career, owning up to loving their hometown. The lyrics sprang from Urie wanting to tell his own story. Though he sometimes masked the ideas in a fictional way, his overall goal was to be as honest as possible. Panic! At The Disco are now looking forward to bright years ahead. Urie promises their upcoming tours will be as big a spectacle as the tours they’ve launched for their previous albums, 2005’s double-platinum A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, 2008’s Pretty. Odd. (which debuted at number two on the Billboard Album chart), and Vices & Virtues, which debuted at number seven and racked up critical accolades.

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL Eagles of Death Metal are an American rock band from Palm Desert, California, formed in 1998 by best friends Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme. Despite their band name, Eagles of Death Metal are not a death metal band. The story goes that a friend was introducing Josh Homme to the death metal genre. When he played a song by the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was within the death metal genre, Homme then referred to Vader as “The Eagles of Death Metal”. After hearing this phrase, he wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like. With that, the band was born, spawning three acclaimed albums and a colossal fanbase worldwide.

Brian May from Queen has a PhD in astrophysics. Apart from music, what are you an e xpert in? I’m an expert in knives and stabbing weapons, Pez dispensers AND all things coffee related. I can make a better cup of coffee while carving a wooden Pez dispenser with a sharp bushcraft knife. Go figure. What’s your favourite/the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? Currently I’m typing this next to a glass siphon coffee maker. It basically is the equivalent to a meth lab for coffee or a very complex three-foot glass bong. It magically appeared on my door as a gift from two Japanese toy makers as a thank you for two skulls I sent. Which past or present band is criminally underrated?Currently a band from the Midwest called RadKey has me hooked. I wish they had more eyes and ears on them. There’s really a lot: Make Do And Mend, The Tone, Jetty Boys, Red City Radio and The Nightbirds.

BARONESS Baroness’ mission statement has always been simple: keep an open mind, confront challenges, avoid creative repetition, and take the music to diverse audiences. Baroness formed quietly in 2003 in Savannah, Georgia. The band was comprised of a group of friends who had all grown up with one another in Lexington, Virginia. Shortly after formation, the band released two EPs and a split EP with Unpersons entitled respectively, First, Second and A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk. Back when cassettes were still being sold at record stores my dad got me Will Smith’s Big Willie Style. Man, I was so pumped. First concert was Korn, and Rob Zombie’s Rock is Dead Tour at The Blockbuster Pavilion. That was the gig that made me want to play guitar. Which past or present band is criminally underrated? I always thought Skinless was the best death metal band out there. They deserved a lot more attention. Their first two records slam so hard.

CLUTCH The tenth studio record from Clutch, Earth Rocker, began taking shape in 2011 when the band were touring with Mötorhead, and then Thin Lizzy. Revisiting the music of two of their favourite bands live each night while on the road with them enabled the band to apply their own experience as musicians to better understand the dynamics of their heroes. Clutch are passionate students of rock’n’roll, and music in general. Gaster’s love of a good shuffle brought that rhythmic approach to nearly half the album. Professor Longhair’s Bald Head — notably the loping style of Earl Palmer’s swinging eight notes — was a direct influence on Earth Rocker. So was Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey, also a shuffle monster. Earth Rocker is a solid, straight-up rock’n’roll album, exactly what the band had in mind.

LIVING COLOUR By the ‘80s, rock had become segrega ted and predictable until New York’s Living Colour helped break the sta tus quo with their open-minded musical landscape that paved the way for future bands, like Rage Against the Machine. The band honed their act at the N.Y.C. famed CBGB and found an unlikely supporter in Mick Ja gger, who took the band under his wing, produced a demo for the quartet and helped them secure a record deal with Epic. MUSHROOMHEAD Known for their stunningly thea trical live sho w and artsy masks, this innovative band has forged new ground in the rock world and influenced many other bands to push the envelope and bring art into rock. Formed in the early-‘90s in Cleveland, Ohio, the band’s combination of metal, rock and atmospheric elements has struck a chord with thousands of fans worldwide. It can be said tha t Mushroomhead’s musical ascendance was a singular, original, aesthetic of eight guys decked out in ma tching jumpsuits and artsy masks, playing unbelievable, unsettling music. No other band was wearing masks and jumpsuits and pur veying this type of ultra-melodic, ultra-dynamic music at the time – Mushroomhead sounded like nothing else. The band’s merging of metal, atmospheric elements, rock, and theatrics mixed with a punk DIY a ttitude has inspired and spawned other bands. Even though Mushroomhead’ s music is rock-leaning in thought, the group remains firmly committed to pushing the envelope and tr ying new things.

FINCH California-based emo rockers F inch, originally called Numb, include vocalist Nate Barcalow, guitarists Rand y Strohmeyer and Alex Linares, bassist Derek Doherty, and drummer Alex Pappas. Strohmeyer actually had a hand in getting the band signed to Drive-Thru Records. The young guitarist contacted the label incessantly , intent on genera ting interest in his music. His fan mail and pestering even led to friendship of sorts with Drive-Thru owner Richard Reines. So when Strohmeyer inevitably pitched him Finch, he figured Reines was just being polite by listening. But Reines was genuinely enthusiastic about Finch and offered the band a contract. The 2001 four-song EP Falling into Place was the band’s first release for Drive-Thru and sold over 6,000 copies in just its first three months of release. Don’t know if it counts as manga but I really like Hay ao Miyazaki’s movies, especially Princess Mononoke.

BOWLING FOR SOUP Writing one perfect album is hard enough. But 11? Come on! Who else in the history of recorded sound has even dared reach such a milestone? Neil Young? Bob Dylan? Herb Alpert? Tiny Tim? Throw out greatest-hits packages, and you’ve got maybe half a decent album among them! No w, the only band to ha ve hit the 11-album mark without so much as a bum note is Denton, Texas’ Bowling for Soup. And there’s no debating those stats, so don’t even try! Bowling For Soup’s eleventh full-length Fishin’ For Woos has got hits! It’s got hooks! It’s got hidden messages! Well, okay, it doesn’t have any hidden messages, but it does ha ve something no other album of the past ten years (or 20; was there even music tha t long ago?) has dared to offer. It has more undiluted ha ppiness per song than should be legally allo wed by law.

TRASH TALK Wild Sacramento, California hardcore revivalists Trash Talk formed in 2005, and had been playing together for two years before their debut recording, Plagues: Walking Disease, was released. Taking influence from American hardcore and speed metal, the group comprised vocalist Lee Spielman, guitarist Garrett Stevenson, bassist Spencer P ollard, and drummer Sam Bosson. Steady touring and frantic sho ws won the guys a well-deser ved buzz as friendships with the right people ga ve them another leg up on the competition. Prior to their next two albums (a 2008 self-titled outing and 2010’s Eyes & Nines on their own Trash Talk Collective label), they released a 7” that featured guest vocals from Keith Morris of Off! and Black Fla g fame. Also, a friendship with the fellow skaters and weed-heads in Cerebral Ballzy and Odd Future helped ensure the guys a home on Odd Future Records for 2012’s 119, which expanded their fan-base significantly.

SKINDRED Skindred are totally unique and remain without peer in music today . The quintessentially British band is the only one to have combined elements of punk, rock, metal, reggae and electronic music with such success. Skindred rose phoenix-like from the ashes of seminal British ragga punks Dubwar. The band hit the ground running with their debut, Babylon, which included the breakthrough singles and consistent live favourites, Nobody, Pressure and Selector. With the new lineup, the band were immedia tely live favourites and invited all over the world to wo w crowds with their distinctive sound and inimitable live show. I have two mounted hammerhead sharks in my living room that I caught in Florida when I was 12 with my dad and uncle. What would it take for your band to play an entire Soundwave set in black sumo diapers? Probably two bottles of Ca ptain Morgan Rum for Ryan and a bottle of Jagermeister for me and Adam. HEAVEN’S BASEMENT First impressions count. The impact made by Heaven’s Basement’s debut album on first play is not unlike standing on the runway as a fighter jet screams off the tarmac and into the air: you’re left breathless by the rush, by the roar, by the energy and the neck-snap dynamics of their ferocious rock’n’roll. The second play is much the same, though you’ll find yourself helplessly playing along on air-guitar throughout this time round. What’s the first record you bought and the first gig you attended? Spice Girls – Spice. I highly suggest their greatest hits. Attending concerts makes me hyperventilate, but the last festival we played I got to be backstage while Sigur Ros performed and it completely blew my mind. What’s your favourite/the most interesting thing in your house and how did it get there? My favourite thing in my house is my G5 Mac. We have done all our recordings on that bad ass machine since our 1888 EP all the way up to Daggers and it’s still going! What would it take for your band to play an entire Soundwave set in black sumo diapers? Try stopping us wearing them buddy! In the sumo tradition, wrestlers throw salt on the ring to ward off evil spirits. Do you have and can you tell us about your or your band’ s pre-show ritual? We used to listen to Bury Your Dead by Bury Your Dead. It’s short and sweet and would get us in the mood. These days we mostly try to figure out where everyone is. It’s usually the toilet.

My dad likes to cut out pictures of monkeys out of the newspaper and put them on our fridge, so I would have to go with the monkey collage. What’s a film or book that has blown your mind lately?I saw about the first hour of X-Men First Class last night and it’s killing me that I haven’t finished it yet. What’s the first record you bought and the first gig you attended? I bought The Rugrats Movie soundtrack when I was in second grade and my dad took me to see The Aquabats when I was like 14 or 15.

DANGERKIDS Dangerkids are a five-piece rock band from Dayton, Ohio, formed in 2012. The current lineup – Andy Bane, Tyler Smyth, Jake Bryant, Jake Bonham, and Katie Cole – have been referred to as “ﬁve people lost in noise”.
