It seems the year is flying, can you believe it’s March already? We’ve been busy hitting up runways at Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, eating Justin Bieber doughnuts (thanks Doughnut Time!) and keeping up with the Real Housewives of Sydney. And between all these very important activities, we’ve had fun putting together a shiny new issue for your reading enjoyment. With summer's passing, we can finally crack out the double denim. To celebrate this bittersweet and momentous occasion, we’re honouring the fabric in all its glory. Inside this issue we show you how to nail that denim on denim on denim outfit (page 20), look at ways to personalise denim (page 24) and bust some denim myths (page 26).

Denim 101 Everything you ever needed to know about your jeans

Ever since the enduring, hardy worker’s jean snuck into our everyday wardrobe, we’ve wondered... Should we listen to that pushy sales assistant and buy that pair so small, we can barely do the zipper up over our muffin tops? You know, in the hope that they’ll indeed ‘relax’ a magical three sizes up?

BY BIANCA O'NEILL

With so many denim myths out there, it was time to settle the score once and for all. So we went to the experts. From tips and tricks, to breaking myths, here’s your guide to the world of the skinny, the flare and the crop, so you can drop it like it’s hot. This is Denim 101, according to the experts.

MYTHBUSTERS Myth: Putting your jeans in the freezer will clean them “This doesn't work. They may smell fresh when you take them out of the freezer, but once the fibres warm up, any smells come back. The best thing to do is give them a cold gentle wash inside out if heavily soiled, or air them to get rid of smells.” - Erin Budge, marketing at RES Denim

26

Myth: Your denim won’t fade “Your denim WILL fade, no matter what the salesperson says. Denim has been dyed and treated, so any sort of washing will always affect this core base of colour. Denim is designed to fade, that’s the beauty of it!” - Elly Frangos, designer at Wrangler Australia Myth: If denim is rigid, it will never be truly comfy “We deliberately select heavier weights. They are robust, won’t tear and most importantly, they hold you in and keep their shape. They will wash and wear endlessly, actually becoming softer and betterfitting over time.” - Tegan Meade, designer at Rolla’s Jeans

“Nah, it can be soft, smooth and comfy. It’s all about applying love in the wash process and using good fabrics.” - Omer Farhy, designer at DENIM CoLAB Myth: If you have big thighs, you can’t wear tight denim “Anyone can wear jeans. You just need to know your body shape and what suits you. Look for jeans with at least 2% elastane or lycra, coupled with the correct fit. For example, tapered so there is more room in the thigh.” - Luke Morrison, designer at Abrand Jeans Myth: Rigid denims are unflattering and not as good as stretch “With wear, rigid denim will soften and mould to the body for the ultimate fit.” - Ana Vemic, designer at Neuw Denim

TRICKS OF THE TRADE

Trick: Wash your denim as little as possible “Denim is a living fibre and is created to be hardwearing. It doesn’t need to be washed. If you want your denim to stay dark, keep away from enzyme detergents, as they will enhance the effect that washing has on your denim.” - Elly Frangos, designer at Wrangler Australia Trick: Pull out the cheese grater “For quick and easy abrasions, use a cheese grater. Make sure you’re not in the jeans though!” - Erin Budge, marketing at RES Denim Trick: Buy tight “When buying rigid jeans, fitting them tight is key. They will soften with a few hours of wear and mould to the body for a more effortless, 'body-skimming' fit. You may have to hop up and down a few times to get them on, or undo the top button after lunch, but that's fine! The pay-off is worth it when you have perfect-fitting, authentically-washed jeans.” - Tegan Meade, designer at Rolla's Jeans

ILLUSTRATIONS BY TWYLAMAE Trick: Fray your hems with water “If you’re doing a raw hem yourself, cut with sharp scissors to the desired length. Then wet the cut edge with water and rub raw edges together to create a lived-in, frayed hem.” - Ana Vemic, designer at Neuw Denim Trick: Rip it yourself “The best way to rip denim yourself ? First off, GO HARD AND HAVE FUN! For knee holes: cut horizontally, across the grain. Cut three or four strips spaced 75mm and 100mm apart. Wet the area with water, then grab above and below the hole, and vigorously rub the area together. Let it dry. Extra tip: if it still needs more distressing around the hole, use sandpaper or a cheap shaving razor to further distress and fray the edges.” - Luke Morrison, designer at Abrand Jeans

Trick: Take a trip to the beach “Dip your jeans in the ocean and then put them in the dryer to make them feel and look really vintage. Sandpaper is always a good way to rub some of the ‘newness’ off.” - Omer Farhy, designer at DENIM CoLAB

“We’ve been inspired by dressing up, dancing and letting loose; the sun-bleached colours of historic architecture and the iconic star symbol in particular,” says Formichetti. The collection is divided into three parts: modern, contemporary and heritage. Oversized army green bomber jackets with denim details offer a unique spin to heritage looks, while star motifs and leather pieces encourage a more contemporary feel.

Seasonal designs are paired with faded washes and unique cuts. Both clean and distressed denim feature, with cropped styles and motif pullovers reinforcing the label’s modern approach to design. Meanwhile, darker tones bridge the gap between daytime dressing and after-dark styling. The resulting collection works hard to get you from AM to PM, no matter the occasion.

Design exists everywhere...let us take you there. At Karl von Busse Institute of Design we pride ourselves on giving students the opportunity to travel the world and learn design from an international perspective. This year, KvB students will travel to Europe and visit design capitals such as London, Venice, Paris and Milan, where students have been lucky enough to get a behind the scenes look into The House of Dior, along with watching the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Berlin. More recently, The Institute has also introduced a China trip, where students are able to delve deeper into the reality of offshore manufacturing first hand.

“I learnt so much about the option of producing offshore and the importance of ethical employment and it definitely made me think more about where our clothes come from and the environment that they were made in. Our now second year Fashion Design student Montanna, was one of the students that attended the China trip last year and is preparing to take the European trip in a few months time. In addition to a spot-on brand name, Scratch & Jotter has a lot going for it. The online store features an extensive list of stationery brands curated from across the world, all sharing a similar theme of premium, timeless pieces. Think quality leather, clean colour palettes and vintage designs, covering the basics (diaries and planners) to the more specialised (fountain pens and desktop tools). If your beauty regime is lacking, we’ve found two ways to make it up to your skin. Josie Maran has released both a Whipped Face Butter and Mud Mask in mango. The face butter contains a blend of Vitamin E and watermelon seed oil, while the mask is packed full of antioxidants to rejuvenate the skin. Infused with Maran’s signature argan oil, they both work to nourish your skin and minimise pores. Use the face butter as an everyday moisturiser and save the mud mask for a more intense treatment. mecca.com.au

Frank Body Frank Body has expanded its range once again, welcoming the Glow Mask to its lineup. Designed to hydrate and plump the skin, it’s suitable for more than just a lengthy pamper session. Use on tired eyes, patchy skin and as a post-workout cooling mask. Like all things Frank Body, the range includes coffee, this time in the form of Arabica seed oil. Available at Mecca Maxima and online. au.frankbody.com

THE FAMILY

THE SMOOTHIE MANIFESTO

THE NAME ON THE DOOR IS NOT MINE

Chris Johnston and Rosie Jones

Bannie Williams

C.K. Stead

The Family is perhaps one of the most chilling yet compelling cults in Australian history. Visually, the cues are all there: a glamorous female leader, an esteemed following, a multitude of seemingly identical, white-haired children. But how would this translate into a book? Pretty well, it turns out. The Family is an acute and detailed insight into the inner workings of this cult. Meticulously researched and well-measured, it provides an in-depth account of everyday life within The Family, from the mundane to the horrific. It details allegations of regular starvation, drowning and LSD use against the children within The Family’s confines. A chilling read.

Bannie Williams is a model, nutritionist, health consultant and now, author. Her debut release brings together over 50 smoothie recipes, tried, tested and refined by Bannie over the course of her career. Split into four categories (Rise and Shine, Everyday Elixirs, Sweet Delights and Skin Smoothies), it takes on flavours usually reserved for dessert. Think cheesecake, carrot cake and caramel macchiato. All recipes are formulated to be dense, delicious and filling, in line with Bannie’s ethos to nourish the body with as many nutrients as possible. Note, it’s pretty heavy on the avocado and banana. You may want to steer clear if you’re not into that.

For anyone looking to get to know the work of the esteemed C.K. Stead, this may just be a perfect introduction. It’s a collection of short works by the literary giant, including new short stories and prize-winning prose. As someone who doesn’t usually envelope myself in literature, I found Stead’s work simultaneously poetic and engaging. Each story is elegantly written and yet, accessible. It never left me feeling out of my depth. Bonus points go out to the publisher for the cover selection, too. I probably wouldn’t have picked up The Name on the Door is Not Mine without it.

DAMAGE AND JOY

PAINT

Real Estate

Jesus and Mary Chain

Holy Holy

“Mindful melancholy,” it says in the media release, describing Real Estate’s back catalogue. And yes, I’ve always found them as dull as that sounds (although, I must admit, they are much better live than on their albums). Opener ‘Darling’ is more of the same-old Real Estate but from the jangly opening strains of ‘Stained Glass’, my interest was finally piqued. It’s more uppity ’90s quirk than the kind of introspective indie that has haunted the last decade. There are peaks (‘White Light’, ‘Time’) and troughs (‘After The Moon’, ‘Holding Pattern’). Overall, it’s a solid album for the fans, but not where my money is in 2017.

I’d like to say that I discovered the noise-pop pioneers at the tender age of four when Psychocandy was released. However, it was actually a re-release of 1987's Darklands on vinyl, in a dingy basement, that caught my attention. I haven’t been the same since. Now, 18 years later, J&MC have released a new album, along with the quote: “Most people who know us, would say that we haven’t mellowed that much.” With Damage and Joy, they certainly haven’t. The opener, ‘War and Peace’, may lull you into a false sense of security but by the second track, they’re in full force and better than ever. If you’re a fan, it’s good news. If you’re not, it’s a shimmering introduction to their stellar back catalogue.

Holy Holy are one of Australia’s most exciting bands. Their 2015 debut, When The Storms Would Come was a sign of things to come. And now, on Paint, they’ve come good. Or, should I say, even better. Opener ‘That Message’ is everything that’s great about local music at the moment. It’s airy with vaguely psych-synth pairings and good, old-school rock vibes. This produces a directional sound that speaks of where they’re going. It reminds me of the best moments from Hungry Kids of Hungary, which is no mistake seeing as they’ve worked with them. A solid album from start to finish and this IS where my money is in 2017.
