My band sounds like a bit of an eclectic mix of styles and sounds.

You can definitely hear my jazz roots in my writing, however my band and I experiment pretty openly with sounds and effects at live performances.

Keeping Busy Keeping busy is my natural 2. state of living these days… the same for any independent musician I guess! The past two months has all been about prep for my new album release, Paper Mache City, and the nine-date national tour we have just started. It’s been quite an adventure piecing it all together and now it’s finally here.

What Do You Look For in a Band?

The type of band members I look for are: great listeners, creative and open-minded, willing to share their

ideas, positive and encouraging.

I particularly love musicians who like stepping outside the box and experimenting, so that each performance feels new and different.

Just before the tour I jetted off to South Korea in August with my six-piece band to perform at the Chilpo International Jazz Festival.

I also spent two weeks touring Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Cambodia in June this year with a new multimedia arts project I am involved in called The Wires Project

That’s the way, uh-huh uh-huh, we like it, uhhuh uh-huh. A slew of Bluesfest sideshows have been announced, starting with KC & The Sunshine Band – and we are shake-shakeshaking in anticipation. The Sunshine Band has been around for 40 years, and their ‘Sunshine Sound’ is still brightening up dancefloors around the world. They play the Enmore Theatre on Thursday April 17. Likewise, the long and winding Copperhead Road is bringing Steve Earle our way, with support from homegrown heroine Kasey Chambers. They’ll be at the Enmore on Wednesday April 23.

Elsewhere, Aaron Neville and Dr John & The Night Trippers are locking horns for a huge headline show at the State Theatre on Thursday April 24. Meanwhile, after a sold-out Australian tour earlier this year, Allen Stone will be making a swift return – this time, the Metro Theatre on Sunday April 13. And finally, one of the world’s most respected players, Jimmie Vaughan – the older brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan – will appear at the Metro Theatre on Wednesday April 16.

Best Gig Ever The best gig I’ve ever 3. done was definitely our headline performance at the Chilpo International Jazz Festival in Pohang, South Korea. We were the only international act and played on the main stage to 5,000 people – both terrifying and exhilarating!

The biggest gig I had done prior to this was to a few hundred people, so this was a really new and exciting experience for me. Apart from the amazing sound crew, and the fact that we were playing on a beachfront in the beautiful summer weather, the Korean audience was the most enthusiastic and warm crowd I have ever played to. Quite amazing actually. I’d die to go back there and perform on that stage again.

Time to don your best threads and shake it like a Polaroid picture with The Perch Creek Family Jugband. The Dressin’ Up and Shakin’ Down Tour follows the release of their new single ‘Big Things Calling’. Made up of four siblings and one stray partner, the troupe strikes a perfect balance between raging and relentless, and placid and haunting. They perform a highenergy, harmony-driven sound drawing from folk, roots and gospel. Throw a banjo, washboard and a musical saw into the mix and you have yourself a killer live performance. They’ve featured on Spicks and Specks, are regulars on the Australian festival circuit, and have two successful tours of Europe and the UK under their belt. Catch them at The Vanguard on Thursday October 24 and Sunday October 27, with support from Papa Pilko & The Bin Rats and Bob Harrow.

Gwyneth Paltrow once said, “Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” If you’ve heard Eleanor Dunlop’s new single ‘Disguise’, it’s quite clear she agrees. The former Cameras vocalist has kicked off her solo career with this beautifully melodic track about having fun and losing yourself in the moment.

‘Disguise’ is the first single from her self-titled debut EP, set for release in early 2014. But for now, you can catch her at Brighton Up Bar on Friday November 1 and The Newsagency on Friday November 15.

In celebration of the end of the month – because that’s always a good enough reason to celebrate – Frankie’s Pizza is holding their Bleedin’ Gums Bluesfest. Featuring on the night will be locals Little Big Wolf, Anchors Of Tortuga and Big Blind Ray; Melbourne’s The Spitfires and Cherrywood; plus Queenslanders Barefoot Alley and Transvaal Diamond Syndicate.

I am also absolutely addicted to Gregory Porter, an American singer and composer living in New York who just has the most hypnotising, soulful voice I have ever heard. My most recent gig highlight was going to watch The Falls, a Sydney-based singersongwriter duo, at Hibernian House in Surry Hills. They write simple but beautiful and unique melodies and songs.

The Murlocs have unveiled a tour to promote their boisterous new single, ‘Space Cadet’.

Loud and abrasive, the local boys have become known for their distorted brand of R&B and frontman Ambrose Kenny-Smith’s distinct screeching vocals. Get rowdy with The Murlocs at Bondi’s Beach Road Hotel on Thursday November 14 and Goodgod Small Club on Friday November 15.

You know him as the frontman of our national treasures Grinspoon, but this November, Phil Jamieson will be embarking on a solo tour of NSW and Tasmania. Just off the back of his band’s tour of their seventh studio album Black Rabbits, Jamieson will hit the stage to deliver a stripped-back acoustic performance. In these intimate sets, he’ll be performing the hits that have kept him in the spotlight for over two decades. The music I write is varied in terms of musical styles, and is about all sorts of different topics.

I guess if I was to describe it I would say it is soul/folk/pop…

Growing Up I grew up in a household that loved music 1. but [it had] no musical background. One day when I was a kid I just started singing and I didn’t stop. I loved it so much that my parents decided to put me in a choir and organise piano lessons. The biggest shift in my musical education came at our holiday shack in the Snowy Mountains. We didn’t have a television so we entertained ourselves with an old record player and a big box of old records including Thriller by Michael Jackson, Pipes Of Peace

by Paul McCartney and an old French record that I can still recite to this day. These records changed my life.

When I was at school I discovered The 2. Inspirations

Beatles. I used to sit in my room and listen to every one of their albums back to back for hours on end. They inspired me to write songs that could impact on people’s lives. This connection is the most important thing and I only knew this because I was so moved by the music. Within a second of listening to music my mood could alter, my life could change.

Your Band I met most of my band around the 3. traps in Sydney. They come from completely different musical backgrounds but it’s their influences that have helped create a sound that I am very proud of. The producer that I worked with for my debut record This Is Life was James Englund. It happened by fluke, I saw him play at The Basement and loved his

This Is Life is my debut record and is a collection of songs chronicling my life journey so far. I recorded it live at Studios 301 in Sydney with my band, and had it mastered

It has 13 tracks and was a lot of fun to write and record. It is available on iTunes. At my live shows you can expect a lot of intensity, and a lot of fun. We have a laugh, but take the music very seriously and try our best to inspire people.

Music, Right Here, Right Now I love the music in Sydney, especially the 5. busking scene and the mates I have met while I’ve been busking like Mark Wilkinson, Patrick James and Taj Ralph – there is so much talent out there. The obstacles of the industry are just creating more spaces that respect original music, like The Brass Monkey in Cronulla or Lizotte’s.

MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRA

The more the merrier, right? Considering the success of the up-to-30-piece Melbourne Ska Orchestra, it must be true.

Led by former John Butler Trio drummer and percussionist Nicky Bomba, MSO has taken Australia by storm with their flavour of contemporary ska. Now, off the back of a decade of sold-out shows, MSO have come together to produce a self-titled debut album, showcasing the versatility of the genre with influences from acts as diverse as Bob Marley and Gwen Stefani.

We’re right behind them: the BRAG presents Melbourne Ska Orchestra at the Factory Theatre on Saturday November 9, with support sets from Foreigndub Sound System and DJ Kilmarnock Steve.

Seabellies’ sophomore album Fever Belle is out now via Permanent/Shock Records, and boy – was it worth the wait! This “monster of an album to create” has been a global expedition with many new influences, being written in Melbourne and Berlin, and recorded in Sydney and Berlin. Following the release of the critically acclaimed debut LP By Limbo Lake in 2010, Fever Belle is an ambitiously melodic and textured work. The Newcastle five-piece will be embarking on their largest national tour to date in celebration of the new release and forthcoming single ‘Berlin Horses’. You can catch the quintet at Goodgod Small Club on Saturday December 14.

SUPERCHUNK

Visionary US indie rockers Superchunk have announced a one-off Sydney headlining show at the Annandale Hotel. Across a 20-somethingyear career, Mac McCaughan and co. have produced a consistently adventurous output, right up to most recent release I Hate Music. (Don’t hold it against them.) Having already announced November shows alongside Neutral Milk Hotel and M. Ward, Superchunk’s one-off Sydney date will be their only headline billing on the Australian tour. Catch them on Wednesday November 13.

IN THEIR SHOES

They say you don’t truly understand someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes… ain’t nobody got time for that. But this month, you do have the opportunity to understand your favourite musicians a little better with the In Their Shoes initiative. Put together by Warner Music Australia, this mammoth creative project has seen musicians from across the globe get creative with their own sneaker designs.

Armed with a pair of white Converse and Sharpie fabric markers, the likes of Macklemore, Kimbra, Grouplove, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Black Keys (pictured) have added their own personal touch to these sneakers – and a pair could be yours! These two-ofa-kind sneakers (two in a pair, yeah?

OK…) will be auctioned off on eBay from Thursday October 24, with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation or a charity of the artist’s choice. You can view all 70 sneaker designs at The Standard from midday to 7pm on Sunday October 27.

WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL

The Woodford Folk Festival is back for its 28th year, with a stellar program to match. The “festival of festivals” will feature over 500 acts in 28 venues across six days and nights. Among a number of notable national and international musicians, Beth Orton, The Basics, Clare Bowditch, Julian Marley, Blue King Brown, Matt Corby and Tim Finn will be gracing the stage. Between sets you can head to the Talks Programme and hear former Prime Minister Bob Hawke chat current affairs. Or for the environmentally minded, the GREENhouse venue will be a hive of activity to expand your knowledge with workshops from academics, farmers and innovators. It all goes down from Friday December 27 to Wednesday January 1.

CARUS THOMPSON BY REQUEST

“Do you take requests?” may be the most hated phrase in the DJ world, but Carus Thompson is receiving it with open arms. Over two sets the folk rock singer-songwriter will only play songs chosen by the crowd, following their selections upon entry. The concept began in 2011 and was a huge hit for audience involvement, so Thompson is back in the game. He’ll be playing his only NSW request show at The Brass Monkey on Sunday October 27.

I

t’s easy to get steamrolled by the Bluejuice train of debauched humour and bodyslamming funk – theirs is a party-starting kinda music. They’ve never appeared to take themselves too seriously, either through their uninhibited performances or no-holds-barred media presence – but all the while we have been hypnotised by their master plan. They’ve managed to sneak skilfully crafted, funk-infused pop gems onto the iPods of the otherwise unaware while simultaneously appeasing music lovers seeking out a rock steady beat. In short, these boys are good: don’t let their self-deprecating tweets or in-yourface nipple hair fool you.

Their latest single, ‘S.O.S’, has been released to an audience eager to hear how Bluejuice will find their feet after the departure of keyboardist Jerry Craib. Recorded in the UK, the song was helped along in the studio by an impressive roster – Blue May and Alex Burnett tackled production duties while session players Sam Best and Ade Omotayo, formerly of Amy Winehouse’s band, joined seminal vocalist Vula Malinga of Basement Jaxx ‘Oh My Gosh’ fame.

toes tapping, and Stone explains that while they have enjoyed warmth from the industry, they’ve worked damn hard to get it. “There’s an affection for the band which I’m really grateful for,” he says. “We’ve worked to market the band in that way; we really felt like we had to do everything we could. I was writing for the BRAG for a long time, I was bartending at the Hopetoun and the Annandale and most of my friends were in bands – but we were never the cool band. We needed something to push us out there. The performative style of the band was different to what was going on at the time so that helped, and our ability to do media really helped too.”

Is Bluejuice’s musical skill ever washed out by the general onstage theatrics? “I think the real player would know there’s some good playing in there, bro. If [people are] distracted by that then I hope they’re distracted in a good way and enjoying the show, and I hope other people can just chill and listen to the rhythm section – I think all of that comes across. We’re such a dance-orientated band that I think if you’re coming to see us and we haven’t made an impression, then we’re not doing our jobs right – and we’ve spent a long time trying to do

our jobs right. Rationally and risk-assessment wise I think we’re doing OK.” A risk the band wasn’t in a position to assess was the departure of keyboard player Craib.

“It was scary because he is so talented and he was such a big part of what the band do.

But we knew there was a way to overcome it.

Bands have replaced people before, you know; it’s happened.”

If AC/DC could go on then anybody can.

“Definitely,” Stone agrees. “When you think about that, if you have to replace a vocalist, that’s a big ask. Luckily AC/DC were primarily a rhythm section and even though Bon Scott was almost definitely one of the greatest rock’n’roll frontmen in history, Brian Johnson came in and does a great job. We’ve got a lot of songs there and I knew we could get past it and make them work. Our front of house engineer strangely enough said, ‘I’ll give it a go,’ and we were like, ‘But you’re our front of house guy,’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, but I can play keys’ – and suddenly he was playing our whole set and we were like, ‘Whoahhh’. He’s been the biggest surprise because he wasn’t even playing with us before and now he’s

With Craib having left the group many months ago and the single only just being released, I ask Stone whether it feels like when you’ve just gotten over a break-up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, and then you run into someone and have to tell the story all over again. “Strangely, there are people coming [to shows] who’ve been coming for a long time, who’ll be like, ‘Where’s Jerry?’ but they already know he’s left because I’m sure they’ve already been on the Facebook page and got Jamie’s [Cibej, bass] very funny letter,” Stone chuckles. “The relationship analogy is a good one – because it is like that, which is a shame because I don’t get to see Jerry that much anymore. But he’s doing the law school thing and working at APRA and has a lot of stuff going on, which is a good thing.”

Alongside ex-sound guy Alex Gooden, session muso Cameron Bruce is also replacing Craib for live shows. “I understand that people want to know whether we’re still the same band. We won’t be the same band; Jerry was a completely different player to the other two guys although Cameron is probably closer to Jerry; he’s not as interested in funk. Alex is great and they’re both, well – Cameron can do the set and make it sound like Jerry, and [Alex] does a different thing … At the moment, we kind of have two touring bands – one with Ivan [Jordan] and Cameron … and [in the other band] we have Alex and James [Hauptmann], our original drummer. There’s a degree of everyone having a go here and it seems to be really working.

I know which one I’m most comfortable with and I’m not going to say. At the same time there’s a workable format with both setups. If you know the band, you’ll know some patches are different and some parts are being played differently but it’s essentially the same.”

Despite the daunting talent surrounding Jake Stone in that east London studio, he felt at ease steering the song towards its final sound.

“They’re all a tight-knit group of musicians and while they’re busy, they’re not necessarily working for any more money than what people would be working for here, and were quite easy to get in to do this,” Stone says.

But were there any feelings of intimidation?

“Yes, absolutely; there is some of that. We already had a demo of the song done and they basically played to that. They always ask if that’s what you want, but it’s more that they’re like a steam train and you can’t change direction too much once they get going.

Luckily, what they were doing was generally what I wanted. They’re fairly confident in their abilities, so once they get an idea that they like they’re gonna drive that idea, and you’d have to be very musically onto it to even keep up with the musical process of the band. I had so much trust in the band and was confident in what they were going to do.”

Veronica Falls Step By Step By Krissi Weiss ondon indie rock and quasipop band Veronica Falls released their self-titled debut album to a mumble of enthusiasm and a muttering of favourable reviews. Their follow-up album, Waiting For Something To Happen, released this year, saw the mutters and mumbles grow louder. The four-piece is doing things the right way – slowly building a fan base, touring relentlessly to both increase their presence and improve their abilities, and clocking up their hours as a full-time band. In the days of the rotating 15 minutes of fame, Veronica Falls are playing their instruments and the game well.

L

actually does feel like we’ve been doing it for quite a long time now.

I think we’re settling into it and getting better at what we do, and I also think it kinda feels like we’re just a lot more comfortable with it.

There hasn’t been a whole heap of new challenges recently, like there were a while ago. You have to keep pushing yourself to keep it interesting, so we have to do that more ourselves. I think things can’t really help but change; you kind of have peaks and troughs really. You drive each other crazy when you’re around each other too much, and yet then when you have a break you can’t wait to get out and tour again.”

Venturing to our shores with their newest album in tow, vocalist Roxanne Clifford is enjoying an endless summer of sorts – once they’ve left Russia, at least. “That’s a nice way to look at it, kind of turning back to clock on it again.

This album really does have a summery vibe to it,” she says.

“Russia is the furthest we’ve ever been away. Everywhere else is really quite similar to the UK really.

Europe doesn’t feel that far from home.”

The spotlight is slowly getting brighter for Veronica Falls but with that comes a greater level of criticism and categorising. “I think that in the beginning it was all strange, but we were never really the sort of band that Googled ourselves or anything,” Clifford says. “You do have to try and work out what people think of you in the beginning, though, and often you don’t really know what sort of band you are straight away so it’s a journey. I try to not read anything, I just can’t do it. With the last record, though the reviews were quite good but still – it seems strange to go and seek out those things.”

But the journey they’ve been on since forming in 2009 has taken them across a different kind of distance, and Clifford has been reflecting on the changes the band has undergone in that time. “I was just thinking about this and for us it

enduring experiences and it is these experiences that have propelled them ever forward. “In the beginning, when we were bringing out lots of 7-inches, things were a little easier, but as we started to branch out it can be so much harder trying to win over audiences when they’ve never heard of you or heard anything you do. That was our biggest

challenge so far, but it seemed that after our first record came out things got slowly easier. Seeing people actually knowing the words to our music was a real shock and I think that was when we started to realise that people actually like our music. That also came when we toured America and we saw people on the other side of the world who knew our music; that

was so rewarding. It’s all tiny steps but they keep moving forward and so do we.”

The Offspring Empty Nest By Krissi Weiss

T

he Offspring have never pretended to be anything more or less than what they are – and they’ve had fun along the way. For those of you just joining us, here’s a quick recap: they’re rocking nine studio albums and one seemingly pre-emptive ‘greatest hits’ album.

They’ve had modest success with some awesome tracks (‘Self Esteem’, ‘Come Out And Play’) and massive chart success with some shaky tracks (need we mention ‘Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)’?). They’re a partystarting punk rock band dripping with ’90s shout outs and they do it well – without perfect hair.

Whispers of the band returning to the studio have been around for months and months, but The Offspring are still busy taking their latest album, Days Go By, around the world.

With a massive back catalogue that is heavily weighted with singles, riff-man Noodles (Kevin John Wasserman) admits the setlist is becoming a mammoth task. “We’ve been playing stuff as far back as Smash and moving forward to Days Gone By,” Wasserman says of the recent tours. “It’s not so much audience expectation, but we know there are certain deep cuts, you know – ones that never got played on the radio, that certain fans in certain countries have come to expect to hear. It’s more frustrating in what we don’t get to play. I’ve been putting our entire playlist on shuffle and certain songs come on and I think, ‘Why don’t we ever play that song?’”

Nonetheless, Noodles says there’ll be a few surprises on the band’s upcoming tour. “We still will bust out a song, they’ll go off and we’ll be surprised at an audience’s reaction.

We just played South America – that’s where you get some of the craziest audiences in the world, they’re passionate and loud and moving. How we feel about the song, though, that doesn’t change; how we feel about it now is how we felt about it when we wrote it. I probably feel differently about some songs than what Dexter [Holland] does or 14 :: BRAG :: 535 :: 21:10:13

what Greg [Kriesel] does, though, you know? But when we give it to the world, we don’t have any control over how the audience relates to it and we don’t try to. Well, unless they greatly misinterpret the lyrics.”

The most notorious example for The Offspring would have to be their breakthrough single. “Yeah, like with ‘Come Out And Play’ people thought the ‘You gotta keep ’em separated’ line was about separating races and we were like, ‘Whoah no, no no. That is wrong!’”

While it may seem laughable that The Offspring’s lyrics were misinterpreted as some white power bullshit now, racial tensions were at an all-time high in their backyard of southern California around the time Smash was released. The fires of the Rodney King riots were still smouldering and SoCal was

on edge. Around that time The Offspring were pushing forward with their music, trying to fit into to the hardcore scene but existing on the fringe with the like of Sublime and Bad Religion. Noodles is transported back to that time and place when I suggest the release of ‘Pretty Fly’ was a tenacious, hilarious but potentially disastrous move. “Ha, yeah,” he begins with a laugh. “I think having played for years as a band in a hardcore punk rock scene where we really didn’t fit, trying to do songs that were melodic when that just wasn’t the scene we figured we never fitted [into] in the first place – why ever bother, you know?”

Fast forward to 2013 and they’re still here, still making music and still trying to get just a little bit better at what they do. “When we’re working on songs we’ll notice if we’re repeating patterns. I might say to

Dexter, ‘Hey, that’s like a song we did on Ignition’, but if we love it we keep going. We do try new styles, we try to take what’s good about The Offspring and mix it with other styles of music that we really enjoy, and use that to occasionally try and break those habits. But we just love playing music, we really do; we travel the world and play music for crazy fans for a living.

“I think when we start to overintellectualise it then that’s when you have to step away and listen to it with fresh ears. Sometimes you write something and in two days it’s done, but with other things you labour over things and change it and change it and something can get lost when things all start to sound the same.”

With drummer Pete Parada having joined the band many years ago, Days Go By is the first full studio album he’s played on. Nothing

much changed for the band in the studio – prolific producer Bob Rock returned a second time as well – but the energy and happiness of the band has increased. They’re doing what they have done and will always do. “Pete’s awesome,” he says. “He lives just outside of Nashville so it’s hard to get him out sometimes but he’s super easy to work with and he’s a great guy.

He’s helped us move our game up in a lot of different ways … We’re not prolific writers, we’re really not, we don’t labour over this stuff for a long time, we just kinda get in there and do it.”

Since parting ways with their major label Warner, Eskimo Joe have consciously kept it all about the music and the fans. The most obvious example of this is the highly successful, and highly publicised crowdfunding campaign that made the new record possible.

“I hope more bands do it. It’s very positive.

Taking the power back. We had ‘experiences’ as part of [the pledge]. They’ve been great; having people over at our studios, us playing live for eight to ten people, playing the new songs to them face to face. They were great nights.”

Dancing In The Wastelands By Cameron James

A

fter 16 years, eight ARIAs, six albums, two new members and countless shows around the world, Eskimo Joe are still having fun.

And you can hear it on the new album, Wastelands, which takes the Eskies into an unfamiliar territory – electronica. But this isn’t a cash in, this is the sound of three guys – who have been doing one thing for a long time – playing around with some new gear, new beats per minute, and a newfound energy.

“We just got to the point where we’d pushed a certain sound as far as we could push it,” explains guitarist, backup singer, studio drummer and all-round good dude Joel Quartermain. “By the time we’d finished Ghosts Of The Past, it was almost too easy to make an Eskimo Joe record. We could churn it out. And we didn’t wanna do that again.”

That “certain sound” can best be described as the dark stadium pop of the three-album cycle beginning with Black Fingernails, Red Wine and ending with the aforementioned Ghosts.

But if you can remember back to 2006, the phrase ‘brand new sound’ was being used to describe Black Fingernails, and previously on 2004’s A Song Is A City – and even before that their debut album was being contrasted to earlier pop-punk singles.

The Eskies, it seems, are a band as well known for their chameleon-like changes as for their hits. “Yeah, we’ve changed direction a few times,” Quartermain laughs. “In our very early days we were producing music that felt like a comedy act or something.” At this point, it’s difficult not to break out into a verse of their 1998 debut effort, ‘Sweater’. That one was a tongue-in-cheek bubblegum punk mockery of hipsterism that still holds relevance with the consciously cool Gen Y. Quartermain continues, “Eventually we sat down and said, ‘Alright, if we’re going to make albums now, we might wanna play music that we actually enjoy’.” And there has been much for the band to enjoy. They’ve gone from the smirking punks on ABC’s Recovery in the late ’90s to one of the country’s most solid live

And it’s taken a lot of work to have this much fun. With this their first independent record, Joel cautiously discusses the “machine” that drives any major label recordings: “You feel like if you don’t get it right, innocent people might lose their jobs.” And how does it feel to be out on their own? “I think a pressure valve was released,” he says. “We felt that we could do whatever we want, have a laugh, and make a record that sounds like the albums we love. You know, LCD Soundsystem, Frank Ocean…

Music that grooves.”

Did you ever think the ‘Black Fingernails’ guys would reference dance-punk DJs or polysexual R&B crooners? But a few tracks into the Burke Reid-produced record, you’ll be surprised you never saw it coming. They slip into mirror ball disco surprisingly smoothly, and if their run of shows in WA is anything to go by, audiences are getting into it just as easily.

“We weren’t sure how crowds would react to the new songs, but then the girls started busting out the dance moves. It was very cool,” Quartermain says.

It’s this close relationship with the fan base that Quartermain says has been the most

Crowdfunding isn’t a new method of making art possible, but it’s still a rarity for groups of Eskimo Joe’s stature to utilise it.

Quartermain insists the decision was borne out of a desire to engage with the “actual people buying the record”, but he can see that with more artists such as Kate MillerHeidke and Amanda Palmer having success, this direction is where the industry might be headed. “You can already see it happening. My hope is that the profi le our story got will allow other bands to see that as an option, and that it makes it possible for them to make a record”.

So, a lot has changed for the three-piece from Fremantle. At 16 years into their relationship, they’ve worked their way through the pubs, they’ve topped charts, and have now found themselves as role models to indie bands across the country. How has the Eskimo Joe mission changed?

“I think it changed in the mid-2000s when everything got more serious – planning world domination, hatching evil plans,” Quartermain laughs. “And now I think it’s back to where we started, trying to make music that we enjoy, and playing heaps of shows and having a laugh. I think we’ve come full circle”.

Brendan Canning This Is The Place By Augustus Welby

rendan Canning spent the first decade of this century co-leading (with vocalist Kevin Drew) Toronto’s gargantuan pop-rock collective Broken Social Scene. The group is presently on an indefinite hiatus but the 20-odd associated members (including Leslie Feist, Metric’s Emily Haines and The Dears’ Murray Lightburn, to name a few) continue to exercise their skills with a number of other projects. Canning has just released his second solo album, You Gots 2 Chill, and it’s no surprise to hear that he called on some friends to help him record it. “I recorded the bulk of it with a guy I went to high school with actually, Steve Singh. He’s got lots of guitar and keyboard credits on the record,” says Canning.

Toronto evidently houses a widely interactive musical community and Canning runs through some other locals who make an appearance on the album. “I also did a couple of songs with Ohad Benchetrit, who’s from Do Make Say Think, and he’s done lots of stuff with Broken Social Scene in the past. I don’t know if an album by a group called Snowblink made it to Oz but she [Daniela Gesundheit] takes the lead vocal on a tune called ‘Bullied Days’.”

Though You Gots 2 Chill features these guest performers, it’s primarily a stripped-back affair. As the title presages, the album is very relaxed and subdued, and Canning says he consciously set out to make an acoustic-oriented album. “Every tune starts out with acoustic guitar, so I think that alone is enough to give the album a theme, because my acoustic guitar playing is definitely a certain style. It’s always going to be slightly uplifting, slightly melancholic and sort of introspective, for lack of a better word. I’ve been playing a lot of acoustic guitar for a lot of years but I never really explored that avenue trying to make a record. It was always little bits of acoustic guitar here and there.”

Canning’s past work alongside a lengthy list of band members. He says being the project’s sole director enabled him to hone in on what chiefly characterises his artistic practice. “I think it’s good just to try to figure out where you’re at as an artist and what your strengths are and what your weaknesses are.”

Even though he has been involved with music for more than 20 years, Canning reveals that making this album brought some ingrained facets of his creative method into focus. “I guess maybe a strength and a weakness is I’m very, very methodical. I like to take a long time in processing ideas. I think it may be a lesson in just deciding on something, committing to something quickly. I think that’s maybe the best lesson to be learned.”

Despite this realisation, he indicates that the best route to securing a durable idea isn’t calculable. “There’s certain pieces that take a long time to come together and when they finally do, you go, ‘Yeah, glad I took the time with this one.’ It’s a slippery slope.”

Ultimately, the album is a demonstration of Canning’s confi dent personality and – in a further assertion of his solo identity – You Gots 2 Chill is out on his own label, Draper Street Records. The label takes its name from the downtown Toronto street where Canning lives, and he voices unashamed pride for his hometown and the community of musicians that continues to prosper there. “I was sitting down for breakfast with someone today and we just said, ‘Come on, let’s face it; where else are you going to live in Canada?’ This is the place.”

New Found Glory Glorious Momentum By David James Young t simply wasn’t supposed to be like this.

Following the release of their seventh studio album Radiosurgery in September 2011, and the ten-year anniversary tour of the Sticks And Stones album last year, the evergreen pop-punks New Found Glory were supposed to be taking it easy this year, eventually coming back to work on album number eight sometime in 2014. No sooner had they announced the break, however, were they back at it – touring internationally, preparing the release of their first-ever live album and, yes, recording brand new songs. It seems reasonable enough, then, to ask straight up: Why the sudden change?

In March, coinciding with work commencing on a new LP, the band booked two nights at Chain Reaction, an all-ages venue in Anaheim in California’s Orange County, to record Kill It Live.

“It’s a really cool, really intimate venue that we’ve played numerous times over our career,” Klein says of the 250-capacity room. “We just know that every time that we play a show there, it’s going to be a lot of fun. It was the perfect environment to record a live album. We took a picture of everybody that came to the shows, so the whole layout of the booklet is a collage of those people along with photos of us and the show itself – it looks really cool.”

“Taking a break for us is kind of like not really planning anything,” says Steve Klein, the band’s rhythm guitarist. “We just wanted to go away for a while, do our own personal things, wait a little while longer between releasing records. Then we got the offer to co-headline a tour with Alkaline Trio, and we had wanted to put out a live record for a really long time. All these things started coming up again. We’re never really on a break, I guess. We’re always working.”

Kill It Live includes tracks from all of the band’s albums in a career-spanning setlist, as well as adding on three brand new studio tracks at the end to tide fans over between albums. It all comes at the exact right time for the band, working as a substantial stopover release.

“People have been asking about us releasing a live record for so long now, and we’re kind of in transition between labels right now,” explains Klein. “Chad [Gilbert, guitar] has an imprint on Bridge Nine, so it was a cool opportunity to not only get something out on Bridge Nine but to also do something that we haven’t done before.”

The live recordings themselves turned out pristine in quality – it’s essentially as close as one can get to a New Found Glory show without actually buying a ticket. The first night of recording, however, didn’t quite go as planned – early on in the set, Gilbert copped an electric shock from a poorly wired microphone, knocking him out cold and temporarily cutting the show. Klein says it was one of the flat-out scariest moments the band has ever collectively experienced, onstage or off.

“We had wanted to put out a live record for a really long time ...

We’re never really on a break, I guess. We’re always working.”

“It was maybe in the third or fourth song on the first night,” he says. “He passed out onstage and had to get carried off in an ambulance. We had to do the rest of the show without him as a four-piece. That was kind of shitty, as we were all really worried about our brother. We made a point of finishing the show, though, because those people that came wanted to hear music – we didn’t want them to get even more upset or go home disappointed. Thankfully, Chad ended up being completely fine and we were able to get it together for the next show.”

If Kill It Live isn’t enough to quench your thirst for all things New Found Glory, then you’re in luck – the band will be back in Australia this December as a part of the recently revived Vans Warped Tour. NFG will be taking to the stage across the country alongside international names like The Offspring, The Used, Simple Plan and Hatebreed, as well as a local contingent including Parkway Drive and Tonight Alive.

Last here in April 2012 alongside fellow stalwarts Taking Back Sunday, NFG have been visiting for over a decade – and there’s a reason the band always makes the effort to come and perform here.

“The environment and the people there are just so nice,” gushes Klein. “We have so many friends down there. We did the last Warped Tour that happened in Australia back in 2001.

There were a lot of fond memories on that tour.

We all travelled on Greyhound buses – it was us, All, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Vandals and all these other bands. It was a lot of fun – that tour was an experience in itself.

“Over the years, we’ve come back and done things like Soundwave, which is always a lot of fun. We get the opportunity to tour with bands we never thought we’d get to tour with, like Nine Inch Nails and Alice In Chains. The headliners are always memorable, and there always seems to be a lot of love coming from Australia. That’s why we keep coming back.”

elbourne and Sydney-based Latin musicians are polishing their congas, tuning their bongos and restringing their guitars for Clave Contra Clave 2013. Putting a little South American spice into your spring, the band competition will showcase the very best of the local Latin scene, from salsa to Afro-Cuban jazz and more. Alongside the Aussie acts, which include Madre Monte, Nativosoul and Chango, are internationals Grupo Niche and SalSalvador. The Sydney heat takes place at the Enmore Theatre on Thursday October 31. The best of the best will then go head to head at the Melbourne Convention & Entertainment Centre for the Grand Finale on Sunday November 3.

Nativosoul What cultural backgrounds do you draw from in your music?

Juan Mulet: Our main influences come from South America and the Caribbean, as the rhythms of salsa, cumbia and Afro-Andean are fused together with rock, reggae and jazz to create a cosmopolitan blend with no regards for genre boundaries.

Madre Monte What cultural backgrounds do you draw from in your music?

Henry Pena-Salinas: Mainly from Colombia, the country I was born in. But having lived in Australia for over ten years I have been exposed to many different cultures that have influenced my inspiration, mainly Jamaican and Caribbean styles.

Do you get a good reception playing Colombian-style sounds to an Australian audience?

Yes! It has been great since the beginning.

Your band is ten members strong. Is it a challenge to manage such a large group?

Yes it is. Madre Monte is lucky that all of the

Is it a challenge for the band or the audience when you’re singing multilingual lyrics?

Angelo Francalanci: It can be challenging mixing English with Spanish, Portuguese or even Quechua when composing – however, it allows us to connect with the whole crowd and not just the Latin audience by using catchy choruses and chants that everyone can sing along to.

What instrument is most important to the identity of your music?

JM: One of the key components of our music, and most Latin-influenced music, is the percussion. Together, the congas, timbales and the cajon form a vital part in the rhythms of South America and the Caribbean, and when mixed with funky bass lines and spicy guitar riffs you get an addictive shot of energy.

What does it take to successfully mix rock with traditional Latin sounds?

JM: It takes an understanding of both types of music in a way that allows a successful fusion of rhythms using all types of instruments. Rock can be modified and worked with in a number of ways, and we use rock quite substantially in our musical blend because of the great energetic foundation it provides.

Is there a story behind your band name?

AF: The name comes from the Spanish word nativo [it translates to ‘native’ in English], the nickname I got in one of my first bands in Peru – and the word ‘soul’ was added as a symbol of our roots and how we use those influences to represent our cultural background in our music.

What cultural backgrounds do you draw from in your music?

Gemma Tamock: Our music comes from a number of salsa-producing nations, primarily Cuba, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the large Spanish communities in the US … we tend to play songs in the category ‘salsa dura’ which means ‘hard salsa’.

What’s special about salsa?

I danced a little salsa in the past for fun, but it wasn’t until the 1999 documentary Buena Vista Social Club that I really listened to the music. One of the reviewers described the film as something like “sunshine for the soul”, and I think that describes this music and dance perfectly.

Do you have any heroes or major influences in salsa?

I’ve personally got a lot to learn in this genre, but I think the first singer I really resonated with was the great Celia Cruz … I think Ibrahim Ferrer is an amazing singer and I love his particular style of improvising.

We’re also really looking forward to seeing Grupo Niche… I can’t believe we’re on the same bill!

What has been your best gig to date?

We played at the Northern Beaches Music Festival and had a mostly non-salsa audience. We really didn’t know what to expect. [Bandmate] Joe saw a woman in the audience who he knew through the salsa scene and started dancing with her.

band members are really into the band and the music, so everyone is up for any gig or opportunity we get.

Who are you looking forward to seeing at this year’s Clave Contra Clave?

Besides Grupo Niche, who are from Cali, my city, we are excited about seeing all of the bands. We are from Melbourne and this will be only our second time in Sydney, so it will be nice to see what the bands over there are doing and start building relationships with them.

Are there any particular stories you enjoy telling through your music?

We like to talk about mythological stories from South America, but recreating them through our own experiences and ideas.

There was a group of young special needs kids there who decided they wanted to dance too … the rest of the audience took a look at the ‘proper’ dancers on one side, and the kids on the other, and thought to themselves, ‘Let’s do it’ … That’s what it’s all about, as far as we are concerned.

Are you a very active band onstage? Describe the energy of a typical Chango gig.

Yes, we’re pretty active, especially the front line – singers and horns. Up front, Luis and I pretty much dance the whole time … [We] sometimes teach a dance class mid-gig, if we think the audience would like to learn a few of the basics.

I started making docos and found it far more rewarding. I now can’t think of a more stimulating existence than to spend the rest of my life picking things that fascinate me and having an excuse to find out about them. My first doco, Beyond Our Ken, got nominated for two AFIs and was played around the world.

Lasseter’s Bones has already been nominated for an FCCA award. I’m doing much better as a filmmaker than I ever did as an actor!

ocumentary maker Luke Walker became fascinated with the story of Harold Lasseter, a man whose body was found in Central Australia’s deserts in 1930. Lasseter’s diary revealed that he’d discovered a seven mile seam of gold worth millions. Despite several expeditions since, the gold has never been found. This mysterious tale of one man’s quest is brought to life in Walker’s Lasseter’s Bones, which hits selected cinemas nationally on Thursday October 31. We caught five with the filmmaker ahead of the documentary’s release to learn more.

Tell us about your background in documentary making.

I used to be an actor in a terrible UK soap called Crossroads; I played the gay handyman Bradley Clarke. I was the first gay kiss on British daytime television! Aside from this, very little of consequence was achieved during my acting career. After Crossroads I fled to the other side

WOOLLAHRA SMALL SCULPTURE PRIZE

The work of 43 finalists in the national Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize will be on display at the Woollahra Council Chambers from Saturday October 26 through Sunday November 10. The prize’s 43 finalists were selected by guest judges Nick Mitzevich, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia and Porfessor Ian Howard from the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales. What attracted you to Harold Lasseter’s story? Lasseter perished in Central Australia in 1931 trying to relocate a rich seam of gold worth billions. When they found his body they discovered in his diary he’d actually found the gold again, worth millions, but that he’d “give it all for a loaf of bread”. The gold is still lost.

Initially, I was fascinated by the prospect of a billion dollars in gold being lost in the desert. I could imagine it twinkling away, waiting to be discovered. But as the film progressed it just became about solving the mystery, I became obsessed and I’ve followed every possible Lasseter clue. It’s been an exhausting process, but I’m proud of what we’ve achieved in the film.

I’ve put everything into this film so the audience can decipher the Lasseter riddle for themselves.

What I’m most proud of though is that this story is being reawakened for a whole new generation.

What was it like collaborating with Harold’s son Bob, and how did this enrich the creative process? Bob and I have become great friends and I’m probably closer to him than a filmmaker should be to remain impartial. However the film would be weaker without this relationship. The relationship allowed me to see the story through Bob’s eyes and understand the nature of this obsession. Understanding this helped me find the root of what makes this story endure.

What are the greater lessons we learn from the documentary and how will Lasseter’s Bones be received by audiences? All the evidence you need to understand what truly happened to Lasseter and his gold is in this film.

For all the myth and mystery, this film gets closer to the gold than any man has been in 80 years, and the truth is in there, whichever version you care to see.

Exciting future projects we should know about? I’m interested in a group who conduct cyborg experiments on themselves to try and create the next wave of humanity. I might get them to put cameras in my eyes, it’ll save a lot of time.

The cast of Sydney Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot – Hugo Weaving, Richard Roxburgh, Luke Mullins and Phillip Quast – found themselves in an ironic situation during week one of rehearsals. [DANCE] Finding Euphoria By Alasdair Duncan he Australian Ballet’s Bodytorque is unique in the world of dance. It’s a showcase allowing dancers and emerging choreographers to try out all new ideas, and experiment with all new forms.

Richard House, a 22-year-old Australian Ballet dancer, will make his choreographic debut at this year’s season, Bodytorque.

Technique. House’s work is called Finding The Calm and attempts to merge the classical and contemporary styles that he has loved since his first days as a dancer. “I went through Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School,” he explains, “and we did the same number of ballet classes as contemporary ones. It was really interesting going from ballet, where the rules are set in stone, to contemporary, which is more creative and has a lot more room for improvisation.”

Hamlet [THEATRE] Finding The Essentials By Alasdair Duncan he story of Hamlet has been told many times before, in the mediums of theatre and film. The tragedy of the Prince of Denmark, a brooding young man who exacts revenge following the murder of his father, is one of the most familiar tales in the literary canon. Director Simon Stone has chosen to stage the play at Belvoir, and when his name is attached, you know that you’re in for something new and fresh. Thomas Campbell, who plays Laertes in this new version, promises a unique and essential take on the Shakespeare classic.

“Simon is always excited to discover the potential in a text,” Campbell says. “Since the start of this whole process, he’s been focused on the idea that Hamlet is the story of a young man grieving for his father.” While he says he doesn’t want to give too much away ahead of time, he says that Stone’s pared-back version of the play turns the focus inward. “It’s very family-based,” he says, “a lot of the war stuff has been cut. It’s very much about internal family relationships, and about the idea of what might drive Hamlet to do what he does.”

Finding The Calm engages with the idea of euphoria, and attempts to express happiness through movement. Dancers, he says, experience euphoria when their bodies move in tune with music – dance, therefore, is the ideal medium through which to explore such questions. “No matter who you are in life, your constant search is to find euphoria,” he says.

“Everyone wants that ultimate high, even if you only get it for a second, a minute, an hour … I wanted to create a piece that shows the search.” The work has been choreographed for four dancers – it’s abstract rather than narrative, and is therefore open to any sort of interpretation. “There’s no wrong way to view my piece,” House says, “you can see whatever story you want. I just want to evoke a sense of searching for happiness.”

To accompany the work, House has chosen a piece by Gabriel Fauré, and a piano and cello work by Johann Christian Bach. “I feel there’s a lot of common ground between the Bach piece and my style of choreography,” he explains. “The piano dictates the technical side of things, it keeps the tempo, and the cello represents the fluidity, and brings the piece into harmony. I really wanted music that had that sort of structure.”

On a personal level for House, participating in Bodytorque.

Technique has been a learning experience, an opportunity to step outside his usual role in the Australian Ballet. “It’s been an interesting experience,” he laughs, “one minute I’m dancing alongside my friends on stage and the next you’re telling them what to do. I’m one of the youngest people choreographing the Bodytorque.Technique season, so it feels a bit daunting working with some of the older dancers. It’s been good, though.

Bodytoque.Technique will be my debut into the world of professional choreography – it means getting my name out there in a professional way. It’s a big thing to be able to start with this company of dancers. I’m really excited, and it’s hopefully the first of many.”

“I don’t think of him as angry,” Campbell says. “A lot of people compare Hamlet and Laertes by saying that they’re both young men dealing with family tragedies – the difference between them is that Hamlet stands around talking about it, whereas Laertes jumps in and takes action to try and resolve it quickly.

He’s a guy who has lost his family and wants to seek revenge. I let those feelings drive my performance. He comes in at times yelling and being very demanding, but he’s really just a man grieving a loss, and we all have our own parallels for things like that.”

A lot of actors say it can be difficult to get into the right headspace for Shakespearian dialogue, but Campbell has no such concern. He has performed a good deal of Shakespeare before, working with Bell and even playing the role of Richard III several years ago. Also, and perhaps crucially, he is not as precious about Shakespeare as some.

“I don’t know if I have quite the reverence for his texts that some do,” he says. “His dialogue is beautiful and it’s poetic, and it also has emotional truth, so it has that double whammy, but you approach it like any other text.”

Machete Kills [FILM] Man Of Action By Alasdair Duncan

he world got its first glimpse of Machete Cortez when the trailer for the bloodsplattered b-movie Machete was shown as part of the Grindhouse double bill, but the character’s origins go back a lot further than that. Star Danny Trejo and director Robert Rodriguez had discussed the possibility of a Mexican action hero for years prior to Grindhouse. The initial trailer was a joke, a tongue-in-cheek parody that ran alongside others for fake films like Werewolf Women Of The SS, but it proved so popular 24 :: BRAG :: 535 :: 21:10:13

that it turned into an actual film, and then another.

Machete Kills arrives in cinemas this week.

Trejo returns as the title character, who this time is facing off against brutal drug cartels, and a mad villain with a weapon pointed at Washington. Machete is the strong, silent type, letting his actions speak for him, and Trejo revels in the role. “Machete is a really old school kind of guy,” he says. “He’s like a Clint Eastwood or a Charles Bronson, and I love

that about him. He doesn’t say a lot, but when he does, it’s to the point. The bottom line for him is that he’s a murderer. He doesn’t read the bad guys their rights, he just kills them.”

was no way, because she was too young,” Trejo laughs. “He finally gave her the part of KillJoy, and she took it and kicked the role in the ass … literally.”

Danny Trejo and Robert Rodriguez have a relationship that goes all the way back to 1995’s Desperado – they’ve made numerous films together, including four films in the Spy Kids series. As Trejo tells it, they revel in each other’s sense of mischief. “I love his style,” he says of Rodriguez. “I love the fact that he is a fan of action movies, just like I am.” Life on one of his film sets is about as anarchic as you would expect, with lots of toys to play with and bad guys to beat up. “Making movies with Robert is a lot of fun,” he says. “It’s action all the time. It’s a real down home kind of atmosphere on set, because we’re all really good friends.”

Working with Amber Heard, who played the role of a deranged beauty queen, was one of the main highlights for Trejo. “I got to kiss her!” he says of their scenes together, which clearly made a big impression. “It’s funny, because when Robert yelled ‘action’, Amber was laughing. He asked her why, and she said ‘it’s because Danny won’t stop whispering ‘thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus!’”

Alongside an all-star cast, which also includes the likes of Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Alba, Mel Gibson and even Lady Gaga, Machete Kills features Alexa Vega, recognisable from her roles in the Spy Kids films. Suffice to say, Vega is now grown up, and in Machete Kills, she plays the role of a scantily-clad assassin. For Trejo and Rodriguez, who have known her since the age of 11, it was odd to see this transition. “When she initially approached him, Robert said there

Machete Kills opens with the trailer for a third instalment in the franchise, a rollicking adventure entitled Machete Kills Again: In Space. It seems a little far-fetched, but in Machete’s world, anything is possible. I ask Trejo if it’s likely Machete will make another appearance, and he says we’ll have to be patient. “The first two films came out of audience response,” he says, “so we’re going to wait and see how this one goes before we make any decisions, but we’ve definitely already hinted at another one.”

Ahead of Hamlet’s Belvoir season, one critic suggested, perhaps playfully or perhaps not, that Stone’s version had ‘ruthlessly attacked’ the original text. Campbell laughs at this suggestion. “The script is definitely pared back,” he says. “It’s all about the essentials of the text, Hamlet’s relationships with his mother and his uncle. In this version, the ghost of his father is a little more present than in most productions. A lot of the periphery characters are gone, too. It hasn’t been done in a way that’s going to offend people. It’s just about the essentials.”

I’ve always thought of him as a very angry and pent-up character, but when I put this to Campbell, he disagrees. For him, the essential component of Laertes is his duality with Hamlet – he sees them as two similar characters with fundamentally different approaches to their grief.

For House, this year’s theme ‘Technique’ represents the ideal opportunity to explore the merging of styles even further. “I thought about the kind of work I’d like to create,” he says, “and I decided I wanted to explore the idea of ballet technique in the 21st century, to create something new and fresh. It’s been really interesting, because I’m working with classically trained dancers, and so the lines they create are balletic, even though the movements in the piece are fluid and rounded. It’s all about breaking out from a classical ballet step into a contemporary step,

and then bring it back again to something more classical, with the lines of the legs and the shapes that you can create. The challenge has been in making a distinct style.”

Film & Poetry Reviews Hits and misses on the silver screen and bareboards around town

THE BUTLER In cinemas October 31 Lee Daniel’s The Butler is the fictional story of Cecil Gaines, a house butler who served tirelessly through seven White House administrations. A historical film by nature, The Butler profiles repression, conflict and protest from 1957 through to today’s Obama Presidency.

A view through one man’s eyes, the film chronicles Cecil’s life through America’s Civil War, documented political unrest and presidential assassinations to illustrate the toll this took on the protagonist’s relationships with his wife and family.

Judged solely as a houseman of colour, and somewhat lesser than his white counterparts, the film takes Cecil’s character and brings to life his loyalty to

himself, his family, colleagues and an obvious love of his vocation.

Academy award winner Forest Whitaker makes this lead role look effortless. At times narrating his experiences, Whitaker’s performance allows us to witness human frailty, both emotional and physical. A stellar cast inclusive of Oprah Winfrey, Lenny Kravitz, John Cusack and Robin Williams, Daniels clearly has the support of a blue chip cast to pull this ambitious work off.

The Butler delights and amuses with humour – not something viewers wouldn’t expect from a film as emotionally affecting as this. Keeping viewers involved for two hours, the feature is a poignant account of one man’s amazing life – a life of violent beginnings and peaceful endings.

AN EVENING WITH URSULA RUCKER Friday October 12 As part of the Word Travels Festival, the newly crowned home of the Australian Poetry Slam, stand out voices Ursula Rucker and Candy Royalle took to the Sydney Theatre Company stage. Having released five solo albums since 1994 as well as collaborating with The Roots, 4Hero and Jazzanova, Miss Rucker, a Philadelphia poet, is a unique talent and seeing her on Aussie soil sure was an experience.

Sydney-based poet Candy Royalle opened the show and although having previously seen some of her pieces, this performance brought new life and meaning to her words.

Her passionate, fierce yet vulnerable creations had the audience involuntarily nodding and gasping as she struck tender nerves and boldly articulated complex ideas and emotions. The sexuality and rawness of some pieces was made even more extraordinary considering her mum

was in the audience – evidence alone that Candy is unafraid to challenge anyone and everyone who hears her perform.

Next up Ursula graced a well-warmed stage just moments after stepping off a flight from Melbourne where she was surrounded by a touring football team. “You all know what I’m talking about there,” she exclaimed to a roar of laughter. After such trauma she understandably took a piece or two to find her groove. Hers were more musical pieces that focus on the plights so intrinsic to her hometown of Philadelphia. Still, the themes of inequality, race, feminism, war, love, peace and struggle easily crossing cultural boundaries. Her passion, confidence and distinctive style were so intoxicating that by the end of her forty minute set the audience were on their feet wanting more.

She rounded things up with once final piece and left the stage to another standing ovation. Walking away it was hard to come back to earth after such a fast paced and eye-opening evening that not only shook the foundations of what poetry can be, but also reinforced the power of spoken words.

The ALASKA Projects Halloween TV Party takes its cue from the seminal late ’70s New York public access television series TV PARTY to create a glamorous terrace shindig with zombies, Warhol-like silver material TV Static and dancing girls aplenty. There’ll be a whole bunch of lectures, screenings, bands and performances to keep punters entertained. Program highlights include Rochelle Hayley and Monika Behrens’ collaboration with academic Prue Gibson, which will see participants design their own love potion to take away and use on an unwitting victim. The tunes? They’ll come courtesy of ALASKA’s orchestra, Musical Alaska, who’ll perform in the Primavera Galleries.

In cinemas now Remaking one of Tarantino’s favourite Australian films is a big call. The original slugline says it all: “Patrick is nearly dead... And he still kills!” These few words sum up the cheesy, schlocky glory of the ’70s and ’80s era of Australian genre movies, now bannered ‘Ozploitation’. This lowbudget wave exploited generous government tax incentives and cinematic stereotypes, smashing together car crashes, full-frontal nudity, over-the-top foley and ridiculous gunfights into unabashed pieces of filmic fun.

Director Mark Hartley’s doco Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! (2008) conveyed the guts of this lost era with mega-energy. But his remake of 1978 horror classic Patrick (which was a truly awesome Psycho ripoff) doesn’t quite get there. Patrick’s a comatose vegetable using telekinesis to communicate (using social media of course because it’s 2013 after all) and control Sharni Vinson’s spooked nurse.

The film’s best moments of lo-fi horror gore

and laugh-out-loud sexual freakiness motion to Ozploitation’s glory days with great affection, but Hartley seems to have settled for a B-grade thriller that will appeal to a wide mass.

In the meantime, he’s missed the out-there adventurousness and winking, mocking selfawareness that could’ve made his Patrick a new cult obsession.

As Patrick, Jackson Gallagher is oddly beautiful: pristine and eerie with flying saucer eyes. Rachel Griffiths fully commits to a wonderfully theatrical, Nicolas Cage-style performance as the pasty, watery-eyed nurse who could be either a total villain or a total trauma victim. Her murderous red lippy also lights up the film’s lovely, Gothic monochrome design. But the script never gives her the chance to truly let loose a la Cage’s now immortal “Not the beeeees!” line in 2006’s The Wicker Man. Patrick is crying out to go off the Richter scale – less irritating ex-soapie stars and more weird nudity and fake blood.

But although Hartley plays it safe, it’s pretty fun and a must-see for horror fans.

Tucked below street level, this joint’s inspired by the Golden Age of cure-all elixirs and takes you back to a time of rustic chemists and homespun apothecaries. Ruari Maginn is Spring Street Social’s booze hound. Maginn’s worked the New York small bar scene for the past three years and has some serious cred in the biz; this guy worked under the consultation of Greg Seider who’s one the Big Apple’s top mixologists.

Chase The Dragon

Eye-candy: Spring Street Social is the creation of pharmacist-cum-truffle farmer-cum proprietor, Peter Wright. Formerly Kong Tiki Lounge and BJ’s Nightclub, the venue’s been completely transformed over a sixmonth period. Think antique furniture and fittings, vinyl and live music.

Something to start with: Get social with some buns (one for $6 or three for $15). Flavours include: Jam Mi (chicken liver parfait, jamón Serrano, spicy carrots and mint), Crab (with celery, Japanese mayo and brown butter), Hot Chick (spicy chicken, chilli, mayonnaise and red cabbage), BBQ Pork (with fennel and white cabbage), and Shroom (roasted mushrooms, goats cheese and dukkah).

The main course: Lobster macaroni bake with sun-dried tomatoes and fresh herbs ($28).

Care for a drink?

Tipple of choice: Chase The Dragon cocktail. This concoction is made from apple pie-infused Bulleit rye whisky, Martell VSOP cognac, whisky barrel-aged bitters, apple bitters, cinnamon-infused agave and Applewood smoke. It’ll set you back $17.

Room for dessert: Muscovado sugar mousse topped with sea buckthorn jelly, carrot chips and sorbet ($12). Cannot be missed.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK JONATHAN WILSON

to wipe the smile from your face or stop your foot tapping when listening.

Fanfare Bella Union/[PIAS]

Each song on the album is an immensely enjoyable listen, from beginning to end; there isn’t a single song that doesn’t enthrall.

Normally reviews are restrained and reserved, but with Jonathan Wilson’s second album Fanfare, it’s difficult to maintain such composure; the album is such an enjoyable listen that it’s impossible not to fall for it. From the loving organ and piano notes to the insistent strings of the guitar and beat of the drums and Jonathan’s own comforting and warm lyrics and vocals, there is not a single sour note to be found.

Xxxx A truly great release, a definite contender for Album of the Year, and a sound that overwhelms the listener with the adulation of fanfare.

The album opener (and title track) immediately sets the tone and scale of the album, unfolding like the curtains being pulled back at the opera; ‘Dear Friend’ feels like riding a merry-go-round on LSD (in a good way); ‘Love To Love’ provides such a feel-good atmosphere it’s almost impossible

In the dark and spacey reality of World’s End Press, it is 1986. Or 2004. Or 2050. Whatever the year, it’s clear that this is a reality unto itself. A place where romance exists on the dancefloor. And fights are resolved on the dancefloor. And universal answers are found on the dancefloor. It’s a very dancefloororiented reality, and I’ll be honest, I want to move there.

This Melbourne four-piece have been kicking arse around the local scene for years, gaining a near flawless reputation as a live act, and building an arsenal of songs for a debut album worthy of the hype. And on this selftitled record, they deliver.

Opener ‘To Send Our Love’ sets the tone with a thudding disco stomp and shimmering vocal harmonies. It’s dark, soaring and groovy. And in the alternate reality of World’s End Press, it is played over the end credits of every John Hughes movie. Also, John Hughes is still alive and directs every film.

DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy gives the record the type of new-new wave sheen we’ve heard on tracks from Cut Copy, Massive Attack, and just about every other indie-dance band worth mentioning. But it’s the songwriting from WEP that lifts this album above most other debuts. The record is diverse in scope, as it snakes from bouncy disco tracks like single ‘Reformation Age’, through spacey jams (‘Deadbeat Sweetheart’), to iPhonewaving ballads (‘Chewing Gum Prayer’) with the ease of a teen rebel played by Judd Nelson winning over the heart of Molly Ringwald. OK, I’m still thinking about the John Hughes thing.

In a genre that prides itself on chewing up and spitting out references, this record sounds refreshingly original. I’m looking forward to hearing more from these guys.

It’s crazy to think it’s been three whole years since Best Coast’s surf’n’sundrenched pop had everyone twisting and swaying longingly at summer festivals around the country. Fade Away is a “mini-album” (or a generous seven-track EP) with professed influences ranging from sleeping tablets to Patsy Cline and all the way to ’90s TV reruns.

Best Coast are tweaking their sound with every release, and although at a first glance Fade Away is missing their characteristic surf/’60s blend of cheekiness, they are most certainly moving forward.

‘This Lonely Morning’ lifts the Californian duo off the ground to a pleasantly catchy start and is the track that feels most like it belongs on a TV series of the Freaks And Geeks era. That and the infectious ‘Who Have I Become’.

‘Fade Away’, an album highlight, is reminiscent of Best Coast’s earlier songs with its finger on the pulse of teen angst and confusion. It has a little more lyrical depth and shows that the pair can pull the plug on their lo-fi fuzziness and make a hit just as easily as they can with hidden, distorted vocals.

‘Baby I’m Crying’ has Bethany Cosentino’s vocals front and centre and leaves a nostalgically alt-country aftertaste that is actually more aurally pleasing than it sounds. The yearning to be country goes a bit too far in ‘I Don’t Know How’, where the build-up takes far too long and is ultimately dissatisfying.

Not nearly as sunny as last year’s The Only Place or their hugely successful debut Crazy For You, Fade Away is a solid move towards a more varied spectrum of pop.

Fanfare’s scope and grandeur is never overdone; every time the album begins to get too big for its own boots it immediately holds back and turns from an epic sound into a ’60s strut that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan record. The album is just that good.

Tally All The Things That You Broke Create/Control

The equation is simple; if you enjoyed Parquet Courts’ Light Up Gold from the start of this year, then you’ll also enjoy their new EP. The group has smartly decided not to change their winning formula too much; the rhythm section still plays fast and tight, they’re still one of the only bands going that are playing guitars how they’re meant to sound, and they still remind you of your favourite indie bands from times past.

With all that in mind, it’s interesting to note what it is they have actually tweaked. For starters, they’ve decided to stretch out their songs a bit.

The five songs here run almost as long as their 11-track debut album American Specialties. But they’re also experimenting with song form and structure. Opener ‘You’ve Got Me Wonderin’ Now’ is a standard, great Parquet Courts track, which actually designates time in the track for an honest to goodness guitar solo.

‘The More It Works’ sees the band’s penchant for jamming come through, previously only really heard on ‘Stoned And Starving’, which not coincidently was widely seen as Light Up Gold’s highlight. It’s no coincidence that this track is the best song here either. That, or whatever it is ‘He’s Seeing Paths’ is exactly. For seven minutes the band gets crazy with the cheese whiz, using an assemblage of thrift shop synthesisers and drum machines, held down once again by a steady bassline.

It’s a similar move that Sonic Youth made with Master=Dik. They followed that up with Daydream Nation.

Could a similar masterstroke be next for Parquet Courts? Whatever it is, it’ll no doubt be worth your time.

THE FLATLINERS

Trapped Flame Sony Music Trapped Flame seems an appropriate title for the second album from Sydney-bred and Melbourne-based duo Georgia Fair; an album which sees them deliver an impossibly well engineered and mastered recording, but one which fails to see the band’s personality come through.

Aside from the rather dull opening song ‘Gloria’, you cannot find a song on Trapped Flame that sounds bad.

‘Fiery Night’ is filled with hypnotic drums, powerful vocals and a wonderfully energetic guitar; while the album’s first single ‘Love Free Me’ is a true standout – beautifully restrained instruments accentuate the smooth vocals, creating an almighty cry to the void.

There is nothing wrong with this record in a purely aesthetic sense.

However, the album lacks spirit. It lacks the heart which has been so predominantly affluent throughout the band’s previous releases. Trapped Flame seems less like the second album by Georgia Fair and more like a band paying homage to the idols of their upbringing. An album like this works when it lays out the band’s various musical inspirations like a jigsaw puzzle, showing what parts make up and create their sound.

Instead, this feels like the band was simply trying to impress their heroes, eagerly seeking vindication rather than proving they possess a sound which is of equal standing as those they hold in such high regard.

Trapped Flame isn’t a bad listen, but it also isn’t a Georgia Fair album. It’s a highly polished tribute, one which echoes the band’s potential but fails to realise it.

Dead Language New Damage Records/Cooking Vinyl

After starting a band when they were in their mid-teens and playing together for a decade or so, you could forgive The Flatliners for wanting to deviate from their recognised sound.

They did it once before, leaving their ska roots behind a couple of albums back. Who could blame them for writing a pop tune or maybe adding some keys to the mix? On their latest LP Dead Language, the Toronto fourpiece does nothing of the sort – and thank fuck for that.

With non-stop touring over the last few years for their previous album Cavalcade, there was no time to hole themselves up in a remote cabin and give themselves to the songwriting process. This album was written on the road and tested on the stage, and it shows in the recording. The guitars are raw, the production is minimal, and singer Chris Cresswell’s voice is at its larynx-shredding best.

Following the path trodden on Cavalcade, the band has taken their foot off the accelerator a little compared to their past work. The redlining punk cuts are still there with the stand-out being opener ‘Resuscitation Of The Year’, but it’s the mid-tempo songs that showcase a maturing song craft. ‘Tail Feathers’ and ‘Birds Of England’ venture into earthy, blue-collar territory; ‘Hounds’ wouldn’t sound out of place in an arena rock show; while ‘Dead Hands’ swings like a Misfits record and has a sing-along chorus that will be a live staple for years to come.

Don’t expect anything groundbreaking on Dead Language, but who cares? This is a damn fine punk rock album.

INDIE ALBUM OF THE WEEK SEABELLIES Fever Belle Permanent/Shock Records Seabellies write songs that make you want to alternatively dance with and hug someone. Maybe at the same time.

Maybe their frontman, Trent Grenell, who sounds here like he’s torn between heartbroken nostalgia and the joy of starting over.

The band have been crafting a sound over the past three releases that is undoubtedly theirs – yearning vocals, swirling synthesisers, staccato strings, dancefloor grooves. They arrived almost

fully formed with their debut EP Wave Your Fingers To Make The Winters, yet their latest offering doesn’t rely on old tricks. Fever Belle pushes the blend of electronica and indie rock into an expansive new sonic territory for the Newcastle five-piece. And it is exciting.

This is a band that isn’t afraid of risk. In that regard, the pairing with producers Berkfinger (Philadelphia Grand Jury) and Tim Whitten (The Go-Betweens) makes for a stirringly bizarre blend of textures that come together like jigsaw pieces. Oh, and it helps that the songwriting is in top form.

Thematically, the record seems to be about falling apart and picking up the pieces (I’m

sure there’s another jigsaw reference to be made here...), and this feeling grows throughout the album. It all starts off warm and relaxed, with title track ‘Fever Belle’ and single ‘It’s Alright’ lulling us into security. By the time the stomp of ‘Berlin Horses’ hits, we are thrown into a more urgent second half that holds all the way to bubbling, spacey jam of ‘Dark Echoes’.

Seabellies have always been unashamedly romantic, but they ain’t soft. Fever Belle dirties up their pretty sound in a way that feels genuinely dangerous and beautiful. Put on the album, and hug-dance someone till it ends.

BRING ME THE HORIZON, OF MICE & MEN, CROSSFAITH Hordern Pavilion Sunday October 6 There are few times, if any, when I have feared for my life. The cavernous surroundings of the Hordern were swarming with an assortment of coloured hair, metalfaced tweens, slogan tees and merchflaunting 50-something-year-olds, and I was still only just processing all this when Crossfaith’s Kenta Koie hunched over his microphone and demanded, “EVERYBODY JUMP THE FUCK UP!” The Japanese deathcore band belted out tracks that arrested the crowd, delivering savage tracks from their latest album Apocalyze, and putting a stake through the ‘first support act’ stigma with sweat dripping across the room. Three songs in and a circlepit had already devoured the crowd, tattoos flying acroos the room as Koie’s screamo theatrics echoed throughout.

The night marked the second round of touring Down Under for Yorkshire-based headliners Bring Me The Horizon, following two consecutive number one albums; their latest record Sempiternal teaching everyone a new word and growing their legion of fans internationally. So being sandwiched in between the impending apocalypse and a fantastically catastrophic opener, one would expect Of Mice & Men to fall into the mousetrap. Wrong. The star-spangled fivepiece launched into their set with the most epic Star Wars intro conceivable, leadman Austin Carlile declaring “I’m coming in hot

MATT CORBY, BEAR’S DEN, BREE TRANTER Hordern Pavilion Friday October 11 Pitched somewhere in between the screaming hordes of girls and, well, more hordes of screaming girls, I moped disdainfully as Matt Corby crooned out his intricately crafted songs, moments of ruminating pause violated by squeals and one particularly heartbreaking demand of “Just fucking sing, brother!” from a drunken concertgoer who was, unfortunately, twice my size and therefore safe from my wrath.

Bree Tranter is the first victim of the tween army. Having once lent her vocals to indie outfit The Middle East, her solo efforts are received with ambivalence and blank gazes. With lush vocals filling the room and the ambient accompaniment of her band resonating throughout each song, Tranter proves an enchanting performer. Her EP Jaws has the earnest glow of Ellie Goulding with the bite of Florence Welch. Tranter’s vocal technique is eerie at times, but always flawless, and pierces the dreamy pop soundscapes in a way that most pop artists fall far short of, and most audiences would be in awe of.

“We were told it would be warmer,” muses Andrew Davies in a thick cockney accent.

The frontman of London-based three-piece Bear’s Den tries to add warmth to the cold audience, leading his outfit into tracks from

/ I’m coming in fast” before bellowing out “WIDER!”, using his mic to part the nowred sea of people into a Wall Of Death.

Succeeding, he propelled the mic into the air and tilted his head so the cord swung violently and wrapped itself around his neck. Therein, it was fist pumps, emphatic singalongs and more enthused formations in the crowd. An incredible sight.

Then the lights dimmed, the crowd silently regaining strength for the show’s heroes: Bring Me The Horizon. Sheer curtains went up and the silhouette of each member was projected with beaming strobes onto the surface. The sheet fell, glitter confetti poured down from the heavens and Oli Sykes cried out the opening lines to ‘Can You Feel My Heart?’ Everyone absolutely lost their shit; the speakers were cranked up by a hundred and the lighting show drowned the crowds who were trying to outsing each other.

‘Shadow Moses’ saw a moving (literally) calland-response exchange with the audience, who yelled, “We’re going nowhere”. A few spins off past records snuck in, ‘Chelsea Smile’ still proving a highlight, but the majority of the set was a showcase of the new album, undoubtedly converting many to consider it their best one yet.

Sure, it was a little over-rehearsed, the vocals in the mix could be heard a little too loudly sometimes and sailors would fucking blush over the fucking overuse of fucking f-words – but hey, by the end of the night my septum was out and I could feel the strain in my neck. It was great.

their new EP, Agape, a collection of didactic folk ditties with lush harmonies that sound like a mix of Passenger and Mumford & Sons. Notably, Bear’s Den member Kevin Jones co-founded the Communion label with Mumford’s Ben Lovett, so we can excuse some of the similarities there. ‘Mother’ is a stand-out track, with the banjo being assaulted and foot-tapping all round.

A light, pure a capella rings through the Hordern, and everyone is momentarily brought to a standstill as three spotlights illuminate the demigod seated at a keyboard in the centre of the stage. Suddenly, primal cries of affection and pleas for marriage echo across the crowd, hundreds of iPhones synonymously thrust into the air. Matt Corby leaves his post and mounts a guitar; ‘Runaway’ and the soul-shedding “She don’t give a shit about me” hook tormenting dry eyes. ‘Resolution’ is unleashed early in the set, closely behind ‘Brother’, Corby’s bandmates manning extra drums to breathe out thunderous soundscapes.

But the standout is ‘Trick Of The Light’, the funky blues number that opens with Corby beatboxing (quite impressively) and looping that beneath layers of vocal mastery.

It took an hour to exit the venue because my best friend bears an uncanny resemblance to Corby himself, a fate equal parts hilarious and sad. And also the final nail in the ‘all ages gig’ coffin. Still, you did great, Matt.

MØ stage dived two times during the show, and that was the first time I’ve ever stage dived! That was magical.

Current Playlist I haven’t been to that many 4. concerts these past months, ’cause when we’re on the road, we almost never have time to stay and we have to mingle, or we are too tired. But the greatest gigs I’ve seen recently [were] MS MR (Reading Festival) and Reptile Youth (Dcode Festival) – I’m a big fan of both bands, and an even bigger fan of the Reptile Youths stage show!

Actually I’m a little boring when it comes to listening to music in my ‘free time’ – ’cause the fact is, I don’t really listen to music when I wander around at home.

It [interferes] too much with the music in my head, so I try not to be overstimulated. But to name a few – I’m really into Major Lazer, Twin Shadow, Nirvana and Cat Power at the moment.

What Do You Look For In A Band/Producer?

In a band, I look for people who are not afraid to let go when they are onstage. It’s very important for me that the band is being true to the audience, and not try to play a role, but just stay themselves but in an ecstatic and focused mindset.

In a producer I look for somewhat similar – a guy or girl who’s not afraid to let go and take chances, and by all means stay true to their art – not trying to sound like the

trend of the month like everybody else.

Keeping Busy The last four months I’ve 2. been busy finishing an EP and my debut album – alongside that, I’ve been touring like a lion; loads of European festivals. I can’t wait to play Australia for the first time soon!

IVY NYE FT DANNY TENAGLIA

Celebrated New York DJ Danny Tenaglia will play a five-hour set at the Ivy on New Year’s Eve, with support from Irish duo Bicep, Cyril Hahn and English producer Will B. An irrepressible force behind the decks, Tenaglia’s discography features the classic album Tourism, which spawned the classic cuts ‘Elements’ and ‘Music Is The Answer’, his Global Underground mix Athens and remixes of Madonna, Green Velvet, Faithless and a refashioning of Depeche Mode’s ‘I Feel Loved’ that received a Grammy nomination. He’s also released under the moniker of Code 718 and collaborated with Celada on many occasions; while ‘Music Is The Answer’ climbed the charts, it’s the Tenaglia-produced cut ‘Be Yourself’ from ’99 that still does the business in the clubs today.

A veteran who has remained on the cutting edge of club music since starting out in the ’70s, Tenaglia integrates his own edits into his DJ sets, which showcase the fruits of many, many hours of crate-digging (or the digital equivalent). “I simply live for the element of surprise and shock value of all sorts,” Tenaglia stated recently. Presales go on sale Tuesday October 22, with first release tickets coming in at slightly under $100.

FUNKINEVEN VS DRO CAREY

Eglo Records’ FunkinEven will make his second appearance Down Under and play side-byside with Sydney’s own Dro Carey for the next instalment of the Resident Advisor ‘VS’ series, which is slotted for Friday November 29 at The Civic Underground. FunkinEven first made his mark through his output on Eglo Records, and has subsequently collaborated with Fatima and Kyle Hall under the name FunkinEvil, accumulating a body of work that traverses funk, R&B and electro soundscapes. Meanwhile, local producer Eugene Hector, AKA Dro Carey, makes music that incorporates everything from techno and house to R&B, rap, juke and grime, with his ‘Journey With The Heavy’ EP attracting comparisons to “myriad 38 :: BRAG :: 535 :: 21:10:13

Here’s one for the diary: Dutch DJ megastar Armin van Buuren has announced that he’ll bring his Armin Only: Intense spectacular to Sydney on Sunday June 8, 2014. Armin released his album Intense earlier this year, which he described to Pete Tong as comprising “more house-y electro stuff and of course trance, some rock influence, even a little bit of dubstep and classical music”. A law graduate and all-round nice guy, Armin’s marathon live performances take clubbers on a six-hour journey into his music, backed by state of the art production and visuals.

Strange Fruit will team up with the Mantra Collective crew for a collaborative party on Saturday November 9 at The Abercrombie headlined by German DJ and producer Santé.

The man behind the Avotre record label, Santé started out as a composer for TV commercials.

He has since established himself as a key figure in the club realm, releasing on labels like Cocoon, Desolat and Souvenir and remixing Terranova and Piemont. Santé will be supported by Whitecat, Aboutjack, Space Junk, Antoine Vice and Strange Fruit head honcho Jordan ‘all hands on’ Deck. Presale tickets on sale through Pulse Radio.

2SER FUNK FUNDRAISER BLOCK PARTY

Soul of Sydney and 2SER’s Groove Therapy Radio are hosting a ‘Funk Fundraiser’ Block Party at a ‘Secret Funk Oasis’ this Sunday, with the location to be emailed to those who purchase tickets. Running from 1-8pm, the party will be headlined by Brooklyn’s DP ONE, an active member of the Heavy Hitters and Turntable Anihilists who has toured internationally with the likes of Lauryn Hill, Estelle and John Legend.

The “kid friendly” fiesta doubles as a fundraiser for 2SER, the community radio station that has flown the flag for soul, funk, disco, hip hop, house and Afrobeat sounds over the years. Local DJs Shan Frenzie and Paris Groovescooter, both renowned for their roles on 2SER, will also be DJing along with Phil Toke, Michael Zac, Eadie Ramia and DJ Say Whut. The Block Party will also comprise a live Sydney street art project showcase featuring Billy Kid, with tickets a mere $5.

SPICE CELLAR BIRTHDAY WITH CARL CRAIG

The Spice Cellar will celebrate its second birthday on Thursday November 21 with a headline set from Detroit luminary Carl Craig. The man behind Planet E Records, Craig has remixed the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Australia’s own Cut Copy and Theo Parrish, with Craig’s rework of ‘Falling Up’ surely among the best reworks of the past ten years.

Like any techno producers worth his salt, the Detroit kingpin has released material under an array of different aliases. Craig’s approved ‘nom de booms’ include early pseudonym BFC, the jazz-indebted Innerzone Orchestra, his more laid-back Fat Freddy’s Drop moniker – just kidding – his experimental ‘69’ project and of course Paperclip People, responsible for classics such as ‘Throw’. The Spice Cellar’s second birthday will be a themed ‘Harajuku Neon’, with a ‘no effort, no entry’ door policy. The big question is, will Craig himself turn up as a Harajuku school girl? MINX been a mixture of work and personal activities, really. After moving into a new place, I have been back in the studio with my buddy Chris Arnott as we’ve been working on another single together. I’ve been touring a bit but also made time to squeeze in a little holiday.

What Do You Look For In A DJ/Producer?

My Minx sound is a fairly large sound! I love to play main room progressive house. I love breakdowns and big builds and you will always hear a house element to my sets. Whether I incorporate tracks with piano, sax or a beautiful vocal, that’s my little signature really. Some real feeling in amongst the craziness…

I don’t like to be too predictable and that shines back to me through the crowd, I think. The surprise and excitement on their faces followed by some hands in the air action lets me know they’re digging what I’m doing.

Definitely don’t plan on coming to one of my gigs and standing in the corner.

New York producer Justin Van Der Volgen, formerly part of disco punk outfits !!! (Chk Chk Chk) and Out Hud, will perform at Soft & Slow on Friday November 15 at The Spice Cellar.

Van Der Volgen has dropped remixes on Golf Channel, Warp Records and Blackdisco, while his 2009 mix CD, Try To Find Me Vol. 2, garnered praise from many a discerning critic and distilled Van Der Volgen’s DJ sensibility, traversing cuts from the likes of Eric Duncan, Francois K and DJ Shadow. Since leaving the groups he founded, Van Der Volgen has focused on disco edits and remixes on labels such as ESP Institute. He’s also released under the moniker of TBD with Lee Douglas. “I started in those bands a little bit before I turned 20 and I met most of them in the punk scene when I was a teenager, so they were some of the people I grew up with,” Van Der Volgen told BRAG’s sister publication Beat. “Out Hud ended when it was time, and I left !!! (Chk Chk Chk) when I felt it was right.” Local producer

I’ve had a few Asian gigs and trips this year, so the past few months I’ve mainly been gigging around Oz. The main focus has really been on rolling this new single out though. ‘Heaven’ was released early this month and so I’ve been putting all my energy into promo and touring for that. I’m so happy how it’s all turning out and we’ve had a great response from the industry so far. It’s available on iTunes and Beatport, just in case you were wondering.

Best Gig Ever I’ve been thinking hard about 3. this – not because I can’t think of my best gig ever, but I’m trying to narrow it down to just one. BOOM BOOM FT DJ QU

The next Boom Boom bash is scheduled for this Saturday October 26 at Tatler, and shouldn’t be overlooked among the panoply of club events going down on the same night because headliner Ramon Lisandro Quezada, AKA DJ Qu, can more than hold his own against anybody. Qu dropped his debut LP Gymnastics a few years back, which established the New Jersey producer as a supreme proponent of house music. With a discography that also includes releases and remixes of Nina Kraviz and Sascha Dive on labels such as Rekids, Desolat and Synchroph, Qu is rightly rated extremely highly by dancers and fellow DJs alike. Local DJs Anthony Napoli, Tom Witheridge, Daniel Lupica and Boom Boom main man Karim will all be spinning in support.

GARDEN PARTY FT BOOKA SHADE & DIGITALISM The Chinese Laundry crew’s takeovers of Ivy have been going off recently, and they’re back at the George Street venue on Saturday October 26 for a Halloween Garden Party featuring DJ sets from Booka Shade and Digitalism, plus a host of partystarters including Mark Dynamix, Matt Nugent, Jace Disgrace, Matt Ferriera, Tim Galvin, Brenden Fing, Sushi, Acaddamy and Badmouth. “Halloween costumes encouraged”, reads the poster, which in our eyes means they’re compulsory. The headlining German house duo, Booka Shade, consists of veteran spinners Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier, and have a new album ready to drop this November: Eve.

Sub Focus The Production Line By Augustus Welby

t’s often necessary for dance music festivals to specify on their lineups which acts will actually be performing live, as opposed to just DJing. Fans of UK electronic producer Sub Focus (AKA Nick Douwma) will be pleased to observe the “live” tag next to his name on the poster for next year’s Future Music Festival. Speaking from his London studio, Douwma emphasises that his shows are certainly an active undertaking.

“The show’s me playing all of my own songs on a fully electronic setup. I guess the best way to describe it would be live remixing,” he says. “I’m taking elements of my tracks and doing different things with them on the sly.”

The brand new Sub Focus LP Torus features collaborations with a number of guest vocalists, including Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke on the chart hit ‘Turn It Around’.

Douwma won’t be joined on tour by the record’s vocal contributors but he says the Sub Focus live show provides plenty to stimulate.

What So Not The Dream Team By Mina Kitsos

hree years of gigging and two EPs now stud the crowns of Sydney’s electro magnates, What So Not. Sitting comfortably upon the throne of a genre they’ve reworked entirely, the duo has plunged the local music scene into a menagerie of quirky soundscapes, causing ripples behind decks internationally. Chris ‘Emoh Instead’ Emerson, the wunderkind counterpart to production wizard Harley ‘Flume’ Streten, has just unveiled his first official solo track, ‘Out To Dry’, on the prestigious dance label Sweat It Out – and with Flume’s single-handed debut going platinum and fuelling two national sell-out tours, we all oughta pay attention.

“I was talking to A-Trak earlier this year and he said, ‘It’s like you guys have this sample pack of the weirdest sounds in the world and you only use those to make your songs, and it’s freakin’ amazing.’

Yeah, that was pretty cool.”

What So Not’s latest output, The Quack EP, has garnered praise from the likes of Flosstradamus, Boys Noize and Diplo. Emerson says their approach has remained simple. “When we started, we weren’t trying to do anything. We were just doing what we loved and what we thought the scene was missing. I really don’t think you can do anything better than that; just draw from the best elements of the best elements around. You just bring it all together in your own way and I think people really like that.” He admits the A-list attention is still frazzling, though.

So how did the dream team come about? “I was DJing around Australia and Harley had just turned 18, and he saw me play at Chinese Laundry. At the time – we discussed it later, but we both felt the music at the time was headed quite mainstream. He was like, ‘Hey man, do you want to get in the studio and write music? I like what you’re playing.’ It was really a sort of way of me breaking him into the industry, and him breaking me into production.”

The new solo material, however, isn’t the first time Emoh’s had to set himself apart. The former accountant was thrust into a legal battle when he began DJing at 19 as Elmo Is Dead. “Sesame Street had to take me to court. It was pretty tormenting and cost me a lot of money to just nullify it.

We ended up doing a settlement agreement, but it was really bad for someone so young to go through something like that.”

In between sets, tours and recording, Emoh says the two don’t have a set formula for creating a track. “We’ve definitely got a very good working relationship and process. At the start, it was very much trial and error. It’s always changing.

We’re at a point now where we don’t get a whole lot of time in the studio together, but we just send each other project files and almost remix each others tracks to develop them into what eventually becomes a What So Not finished product.”

The Quack, out through Skrillex’s OWSLA label, vaunts collaborations with the crème de la crop of international beatmasters. Spiking oriental mixes with signature warped soundscapes and thundering bass, the record had its world premiere on Mark Ronson’s Authentic Sh*t radio show and has since infected the masses at packed-out music festivals. Emoh seems pretty chuffed. “We’ve got Action Bronson, DMAC, Deize

Tigrona, Blood Diamonds… it was really good working with a bunch of vocalists on that EP. I honestly just love getting in studios with anyone, finding out how they work, finding out little tricks. I just spent this week in the studio with Crookers. He’s really given me some insight into things I haven’t really thought about. A lot of the guys coming through Oz are international and often want to meet up, catch up, share some tracks. It’s really cool like that.”

While there are hints of the grimy pulses of his work in Fake Bratpack, Emoh says songwriting alone is still a whole different mindset. “Because I’m writing it myself, it heads in a different direction at different points in time. So where Harley might say, ‘Let’s do this’, I’ll say, ‘No, let’s head in this direction’ … It’s like the middle ground between What So Not and Flume; it’s got similar elements but I think I focus a lot more on drums because I was a drummer all through my childhood, and also brass and horn are something I’ve always loved – more ghetto booty kind of music,” he laughs.

“I wanted to come up with a show that allows me to perform, and change, as much of the music as possible in a live setting. I use motion sensors, which are a bit like theremins – they allow me to move my hands around. We’ve also made the lighting in the show audioreactive so at points during the show the lights are actually responding to stuff I’m doing, whether it be playing the keyboard or hitting the drum pad or using these motion sensors.”

Kele’s not the only impressive vocalist appearing on the album, with other guests including rising pop lass Foxes and lesser-known English performers MNEK and Jayelldee.

Collaborating with vocalists on almost every song greatly distinguishes Torus from Sub Focus’ self-titled debut. Douwma explains his newfound relish for working with other musicians.

“I didn’t really want to do an album with tons of features on it, but I much prefer songwriting with other people

so that’s how it ended up … The last album was basically just me in my bedroom writing tracks completely in isolation. [On this album] there’s a lot more collaboration in general, which is quite refreshing for me”.

The internet makes it easy for artists to work together without being in the same room, but Douwma opted to personally seek out the acts who feature on the album, engaging in an interactive exchange of ideas.

Virtual technology still played a part in the process, however, as Douwma elaborates on how he worked with Kele.

“Kele is someone who I’d wanted to work with for ages; I’m a big fan of Bloc Party and I love his voice on electronic stuff. He was living in New York at the time so we were sending files to and from each other, then we got together when he moved back to London, about six months ago, to finish the track.”

Joining forces with many artists from a variety of genres has evidently broadened Sub Focus’ stylistic reach. Douwma says he previously regarded composition as an introspective activity, but he’s come to embrace the unique results offered by creative conference.

“I think an album gains a lot of richness from having multiple different players and people on it. I was quite interested [hearing] about the whole process behind the Daft Punk album recently. They were pretty much playing the role of the old-fashioned producer, getting the best players together in a room and recording the results. I definitely enjoyed the process of getting lots of people to contribute in small ways.”

After a snowboarding accident a year ago, the 23-year-old Emoh has made pilates and stretching a daily ritual and a pre-show routine, teaming it with “no more than three drinks before I start, and then a shot just before I go on.” In the wake of a raved-about two-part set at this year’s Splendour, What So Not are hitting up Karnevil at Luna Park’s Big Top to ring in Halloween. With luck, Emoh will remember all his gear this time. “[Splendour] was the biggest show that we’ve done thus far. Harley was really pissed off...

I forgot to bring the headphones for the first half of the set while we were warming up for James Blake.

That’s okay for me, but Harley can’t play without headphones. He was onstage just smiling, hands up, but he was like, ‘I’m so angry at you right now.’ It was pretty hilarious.”

Will Sparks Light The Fuse By Rachel Davison

W

hen superstar DJ David Guetta drops a track in his set, well, it’s a big deal, and it means a whole heap of DJs, producers and clubbers worldwide are taking note. The track he dropped was the catchy ‘Ah Yeah!’ from a name relatively unknown outside of Australia, Will Sparks – an all-round nice bloke and key player in pushing the Melbourne Sound or Melbourne Bounce. “‘Ah Yeah!’ was a track that charted really highly out of nowhere and I was not expecting it at all,” Sparks says from his home in Melbourne.

“I don’t know how it happened but the social networks these days are just incredibly powerful – and I think because I was making track after track every week and putting it up on Soundcloud, and the more people that like it, the more people see it, and it just kept progressing.

When all those followers see that a track’s out, they buy it – well some do – and it charts, and that’s how it got up there.”

The bouncy take on electro house that began in Melbourne many years ago has over the past 12 months been creating a stir worldwide, and Sparks has found himself in the right place at the right time.

“The big guys around the world like Laidback Luke are supporting it now, and Djuro… I’ve heard Calvin Harris and even A-Trak – guys you would never think would play anything like that, especially A-Trak – he’s more hip hop, isn’t he? I don’t even really know, because I haven’t been around that long. It’s incredible to see their support and I couldn’t ask for anything more, to be honest,” Sparks says completely genuinely.

Still, he doesn’t really want to get into a discussion about the musical

characteristics that define the Melbourne Sound: “You know, I’ve tried to explain it that many times but every time I try to, I get bagged – well, not bagged, but pulled up on certain things that I say about what it compares to. So what I usually say is, ‘Just go listen to it and that’s what it is.’ Do you know what I mean?” he laughs.

So if you’re not totally au fait with the Bounce, you can listen to Sparks’ DJ mix on the new OneLove release, Sound Machine 2013 (which also includes a mix from Bingo Players) and on their justreleased compilation, Melbourne Bounce. Despite his misgivings, Sparks elaborates.

“I’ve got a metal background; I played guitar my whole life, like hard metal or death metal, and so I think [the Melbourne Sound] compares to it in a way because it’s really hard, headbanging … It started off to be more minimal, like kick-bassy, and now it’s kinda progressed to a big room style of minimal. So the big progressive chords and then the drop – and as people call it, a Melbourne Drop – it’s progressed a lot in the last four, five years and it’s just going to keep on progressing, I think.”

The attention recently landed Sparks his first gigs in the US. “It was amazing. I had no idea what to expect and the reaction from the Americans with my new sound, I was pretty worried on it, because it’s something brand new to them – and yeah, it was just awesome every time they went crazy”.

“It’s really similar [to Australia],” Sparks continues. “[But] there is a lot of bottle service and there’s hardly any in Australia and that was another big difference. It was pretty daunting at the start because

I didn’t know whether to play a more loungey kind of music style, but I still banged it out and didn’t care and they got amongst it.”

Of late, Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ has been in the news courtesy Miley Cyrus and her publicity antics, and Sparks did a remix of the song himself.

Inadvertently, I suggest he only did it for exposure, given he’d posted on Facebook that “what Miley’s doing at the moment is obviously planned and a genius way to get people talking about her…”

“It wasn’t [for exposure] at all,” laughs Sparks. “Because I’m getting

co-managed by someone from Interscope that’s how I got the remix … I know the people that know Robin and so yeah, it’s obviously all planned – like even for him up there with [Miley], and the public don’t realise (well, most of the public) that it’s a way to get your name out and she got 60 million [online] views in a day because of the way she’s acting. I don’t think she’s really like that, it’s just her management and marketing team behind her”.

And while I suggest that it’s not likely you’d actually say ‘no’ to remixing Thicke at this point in your career, Sparks assures me that’s not the case. “I’ve had to say

‘no’ to a few other big things,” he reveals. “It’s just because it’s not where I wanna go yet; I really don’t want to commercialise myself, I just wanna keep my style going and do my thing because it seems to be working so far – and yeah, just tour around and keep working on music because I’ve got lots to come out.”

erlin-based house proponent Kerstin Egert, AKA Tama Sumo, will headline the new weekly Sunday night bash Exit at the Spice Cellar on Sunday November 17. Tama has been DJing since the release of films such as The Last Boy Scout and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze heralded the second Hollywood Golden Age in the early ’90s. Since then, she’s held down residencies at fabled Berlin clubs such as Tresor and Berghain/ Panorama Bar, where Tama continues to spin regularly, taking to the decks both upstairs in the more house musicoriented environment of Panorama Bar and downstairs in the reverberating catacombs of Berghain. A specialist DJ, Tama’s built her vaunted reputation on her live performances rather than a significant production discography; she’s only released one commercial mix compilation, the second in Ostgut Ton’s Panorama Bar series, and has released a few EPs alongside Prosumer between 2008-2010.

A varied selector whose range traverses Chicago house and Detroit techno along with European influences, Tama’s sound leans more towards the latter. She can certainly thump it out when the moment demands it, but she prefers to focus on playing tracks that exude “emotion, funk, soul, variety and dirt” rather than sticking to a particular style. This fluid approach allows Tama to change the tempo throughout her sets and seamlessly shift between genres depending on the mood, crowd, venue and other DJs on the bill. However she gauges the mood at Spice Cellar in her maiden performance in Sydney, you’d be a fool not to be a part of it.

Two of the leading producers in the underground club realm, John Tejada and Moomin, will throw down at The Burdekin on Saturday November 23 courtesy of Picnic. Hailing from Austria, the LA-based Tejada has ticked plenty of boxes throughout his career, collaborating with the likes of Josh Humphrey and Takeshi Nishimoto, launching his own label Palette Recordings, remixing the likes of Claude VonStroke and Gui Boratto, completing a mix for Fabric and releasing on labels such as Poker Flat and more recently Kompakt Records. With an eclectic sound spanning Detroit-flavoured melodic techno and house along with more minimal soundscapes, Tejada will return to Australia after having previously headlined Mad Racket’s NYE bash.

The other headliner, German producer Sebastian Genz, AKA Moomin, is a longtime DJ who made a belated but hugely successful transition into production a few years ago; he’s now considered one of the finest purveyors of deep house in the biz.

Coming from a hip hop and funk background, Genz first emerged as a producer with a release alongside Berlin house figurehead Oskar Offermann, the Hardmood/Joe MacDaddy EP, before garnering a profusion of accolades with the release of his debut album The Story About You on Hamburg’s Smallville Records label in 2011. Citing the likes of DJ Shadow, Theo Parrish, Diamond D, and Omar-S as influences, Genz has translated his intuition for sampling into soulful deep house productions that have captured the imagination of house music aficionados worldwide. “I think the most important thing is to make music that comes out of your heart, something you feel,” says Genz. He’s also collaborated with fellow Smallville artist Christopher Rau under the moniker of Roaming, and launched his own label Closer at the start of this year with his A Day And A Night EP. A strong local lineup of DJs will support Tejada and Moomin, headed by veteran DJ Phil Smart, a favourite among local clubbers.
