Slime is made of glue and an activator. In glue, polymers (very long chains of molecules) slide past each other, so it flows.
Adding an activator makes it harder for the glue to flow and creates a new substance, slime!
Unlike traditional slime, butter slime has the addition of air-dry clay, and as a result doesn’t ooze, instead it bends and moulds.

Colour Change Putty is thicker and more solid than slime. You can bounce it, stretch it, snap it, mould it and fold it. It can also change colour from purple to blue as a result of chromism; the phenomenon of the, often reversible, colour change of a substance.
Thermochromism, one of the most common types of chromism, is a change in colour caused by a change in temperature, so simply kneading the putty in your hands will bring about the transformation.

The polymers in the bottled slime slide past each other quite easily and flow. The activator liquid contains a cross-linking agent which forms chemical bonds between the polymers in the bottled slime, so that the slime becomes a gel and can’t flow.
The inside of the ‘noodle’ hasn’t reacted yet, so stays runny and liquid. Snap a ‘noodle’ in half to see the slime, then dip the end back in the tank to watch it turn to gel, too!
