Editors Comments Welcome to the first joint Your Partnerships and Funky Media magazine!

This partnership, between the well-established Funky Media Magazine and associated businesses, and the expanding networking business Your Partnerships, is something that we, as the founders of the two organisations, are excited to develop our business collaboration by joining the existing Your Partnerships Magazine with the Funky Media Magazine, to reach a wider audience. Our aim is to enhance the opportunities for businesses in the South West and beyond, offering greater reach for our advertisers and those who feature in articles, and more opportunities for collaboration.

We’d like to introduce ourselves, for those who don’t know already.

Cristina Moyle, Owner of Funky Media Marketing Agency, the Funky Media Magazine, and associated business Funky Media.ai. Cristina is dedicated to reducing stress and overwhelm for businesses, using automation, training, coaching, and many varied tools to help you manage your time and your business effectively.

Brock (just Brock) is the MD of Your Partnerships, built in response to demand for a flexible, approachable networking partnership, over the last 6 years. After retiring following 25 years in the US Navy, Brock knows a thing or two about the power of people working together, and takes pride in creating connections.

This partnership that we are creating aims to bring you an inspirational publication that serves the business community across the UK, with a special emphasis on the incredible people behind those businesses.

We are both dedicated to supporting, strengthening and developing local businesses, from new sole-trader startups to major, established contributors to the local economy. We intend for this magazine to take the best of what both organisations do, harnessing the connectivity and support of Your Partnerships, and the creative and innovative inspiration that has been a part of the Funky Media brand for a while now.

Definitions A side-hustle is a secondary job or income stream that people pursue alongside their primary occupation to earn extra money or explore a passion.

An entrepreneur is someone who initiates and manages a business, taking on financial risks with the goal of achieving profit and success.

A SME is a small to medium sized enterprise that normally starts off as a sole (or duo) trader, limited liability partnership or limited liability company.

Individual mentoring benefits additionally from active listening, empathy, and guiding personal development. Tailoring the approach to the mentee’s needs and encouraging continuous learning and innovation and personal growth.

Mentoring plays a crucial role in personal, professional and business development.

Offering guidance, support, and valuable insights. For individuals, having a mentor can provide a roadmap for personal growth, helping them navigate challenges and make the most of opportunities.

Entrepreneurs benefit significantly from mentorship. Gaining access to a seasoned advisor that can steer them away from common mistakes. Mentors share their experiences (successes and failures) and help entrepreneurs to refine their business strategies and overcome obstacles.

The right Mentor will make life a lot easier for you and prepare you to take advantage of situations and opportunities that you may well have missed.

Whether you are just starting out or already running a business, it helps to have a mentor (or mentors) to whom you can turn with questions large and small. A mentor is a person with more experience in business, or simply in life, who can help an entrepreneur or founder enhance their abilities and advise on navigating new challenges or different paths. A mentor can be an advantage to any entrepreneur in a broad range of scenarios, whether they provide pointers on business strategy, bolster networking efforts or act as confidantes when your work-life balance gets out of kilter (or even when you have a crazy idea and need to bounce it across someone independent and unbiased.)

A mentor needs to be a fully objective, nonjudgemental and a good sounding board (with active listening skills) who you can openly share and discuss anything with.

Be clear on what you want to get out of the relationship. Make sure they are the right THIT (sic).

• Transparency (from an open approach) • Honesty (from a direct approach) • Integrity (as a core value) • Trust (built over time) Your mentor should only support people that they believe they can benefit and be of assistance to. The mentor you think you need may not be right for you, but they might know someone else who would be.

How many Mentors do I need?

The Specialist Mentor If you know you want to be the best in your field, ask, “Who are the most iconic figures in that area?” This person can function as your personal expert, someone who’s accumulated their wisdom through years of experience and who can provide insight into your industry and fine-tune your skills. Turn to this person when you need advice about launching a new initiative or brainstorming where you should work next. They should help you identify, realize and improve your strengths towards the nearest to perfection as is possible.

The Advocate Mentor This mentor is someone who will talk you up to others, and it’s important to have one of these in your network. These are people who are advocates and have your back. Often, they can be connectors too, introducing you to useful people to help you on your journey.

The Buddy Mentor This mentor is the person who can talk you through projects, advise you in navigating the personalities you need to deal with, and listen to you vent when needed. This kind of mentoring relationship is best when it’s reciprocal. You are peers that are committed to supporting each other, collaborating with each other, and holding each other accountable. And when it works, both the quality of your work and your engagement levels improve.

The Rock Mentor This mentor doesn’t have to work in your sector or industry. In fact, it could even be a friend or family member. While your advocate supports you to achieve specific goals, your Rock is a confidante and a balancing sounding board.

Everyone hits speed bumps and go through uncertainty at some point.

We need someone who can give us a psychological lift and help us see light at the end of the tunnel during difficult or challenging times. The Rock always has your best interests in mind, they can be particularly insightful when it comes to setting priorities, achieving work-life balance, and not losing sight of your values and meaningful purpose.

The Polar Mentor When we say the word ‘mentor,’ we often conjure up the image of an elder or wise person.

But there is always a benefit in listening to the alternative views of others, especially those who are less experienced than you (there’s no harm in listening). You may even learn from these people, even though they may have fewer years of experience. This also enables you to engage with the younger generation and keep ideas fresh and relevant.

The Balance Mentor A wellbeing mentor enables us to acknowledge the impact of stress and encourage us to deal with it better. Taking a holistic approach gets to the heart of the effects of stress, but quickly identifies which of the available tools can be best used to repair the damage. Not only does this reduce stress and its impact in the short term, it offers clarity and guidance so red flags are noted before stress becomes a critical situation.

The mentor-mentee relationship thrives on open communication, trust, and mutual respect. We use the acronym T.R.A.I.T. • Transparent (clear) • Respectful (courteous) • Authentic (genuine) • Integrity (honest) • Trust (confidential)

Why is Coaching different from Mentoring and is a more Holistic Approach better?

Coaching models vary, but many follow a structured approach, to take the recipient from where they are to where want to be. Two popular Coaching models are G.R.O.W. (Goals, Reality, Options and Willingness) and O.S.C.A.R. (Outcome, Situation, Choices, Actions and Review). Each model provides a framework to guide the coaching process.

The Holistic approach Using both Coaching & Mentoring Skills that includes the individual’s whole life gives a better all-round solution, both within a business environment and when not. After all, we are all a sum of our parts, are we not?

Starting an Enterprise Start before you’re ready! A powerful mindset that encourages taking action, despite uncertainties or fears, propelling you forward in your endeavours.

What is the problem you are solving? Why do you want to do this? What is the life that you want to achieve from it? How hard are you willing to work to succeed?

Do you understand your target audience, competitors, and relevant market trends? Have you looked at the market drivers and catalysts that create opportunities within it?

Have you defined what sets your product or service apart from others. Is it cheaper, high-end, innovative, disruptive, etc?

Have you created a business plan, with ambitious but still realistic revenue.

Do you understand the difference between revenue and cashflow! Do you understand your fixed, semi-fixed, variable costs and overheads and how to apply them to your revenue growth strategy?

How much money do you have to start and how much do you need to get to where you need to be? Do you know where will this come from?

Are you prepared to pivot, adapt and morph based on feedback and changing market conditions?

You need to network like a ninja and build a strong professional support network to gain insights and potential partnerships and future collaborations.

All successful people have moments of self-doubt, bad habits, gaps in their knowledge, procrastination issues, imperfect routines, insecurities, and imposter syndrome too. But they also know that all of these things are perfectly normal. That is the difference.

Create a Meaningful Purpose Finding a meaningful purpose involves exploring the passions, strengths, and values of the individual or enterprise. Consider how it contributes positively to society, whether through work, relationships, or community involvement. A place in society emerges as you align your skills and interests with opportunities that make a difference, fostering a sense of fulfilment and connection.

Be a Flamingo Embrace your uniqueness and let your individuality shine, it’s what makes you stand out from the crowd. We are all a result of nature and nurture, the academic and organisational institutions we have been a part of, the friends we met along the way, the relationships we have had, and the life we have led. In essence, we could be compared to being a stick of rock with our individuality running through its core.

What we need to do is use that “stick of rock” and create situations where it resonates like an internal tuning fork. Thereby, becoming comfortable in our own skin and in-tune with ourselves. A chameleon changes it’s colour to adapt to its surroundings, but it is still a chameleon! What can you morph into by changing your behaviours?

Influencing and Influential Influential individuals often have a significant impact on others, shaping opinions or decisions.

Those who are influencing actively contribute to this impact, driving change or promoting certain ideas.

Live in the moment To enjoy your life and job, focus on finding a balance that aligns with your passions and values. Cultivate positive relationships, set achievable goals, and prioritize self-care. Seek meaning in your work, and don’t hesitate to explore new hobbies outside of your job to add fulfilment to your life.

Expanding your network Building meaningful connections involves active listening, genuine interest in others, and displaying empathy. Share your thoughts openly, find common interests, and be supportive. Everyone is different, so no onesize-fits all approach will ever meet the needs of the individual.

Different friends offer diverse viewpoints, enriching your understanding of various topics.

A larger network provides emotional support during challenging times. New connections may introduce you to opportunities, both personally and professionally. Interacting with a variety of people improves social skills and adaptability.

Minimum Viable Proposition The minimum viable proposition (MVP) is a succinct statement outlining the core benefits your product or service offers to customers, addressing their key needs or problems. It encapsulates the unique value that sets your offering apart in the market.

West Country Women Awards Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s time to celebrate the inspirational women of the West Country!

The West Country Women Awards were founded by Alexis Bowater OBE and Tess Stuber as a Community Interest Company, to celebrate achievements and triumphs of women across the South West peninsular.

The mission of the awards is to highlight and honour women, recognising their outstanding contributions to various fields and their positive impact on the community.

Through this platform, the aim is to empower, inspire, and support women, fostering a culture of inclusivity and equality while showcasing remarkable accomplishments.

The awards are not just about business either! They celebrate the fantastic work being done by individual women, community organisations, charities alongside businesses too. Their team has even started super early for this year, with dates for some events organised and announced!

GIVING BACK Each year, West Country Women name a Charity of the Year to partner with and raise funds for. In 2023, this was Georgia’s Voice and they raised over £3k at the Grand Final alone! For 2024, they have announced their new Charity of the Year will be Gifted Women. Jenny Adjene won the Women in Charity award, sponsored

by Lifeworks at the Grand Final last December!

Giving back to the community has always been a core value of their organisation and they want to take every opportunity to make a meaningful difference. The aim is not to only raise funds for a worthy cause but also serve as a platform to raise awareness and inspire others to contribute towards the betterment of the West Country Women Community.

AMBASSADORS West Country Women have a fantastic team of ambassadors led by the Chief Ambassador, Trish Caller. They cover all areas of the West Country and include Sarah Jepson, Jo Lines, Cristina Moyle, Clare Palmer, and Emilie Perring. They are a group mixed of sponsors, supporters, winners, and business leaders in the region.

They shout about the work of the organisation at all levels.

MAKING CONNECTIONS In addition to in-person events, West Country Women have recently relaunched their directory of communities and businesses. The Directory gives you all a chance to stay connected and engage with each other across this incredibly special community here on the South West peninsular of the UK. The fee has now been removed and is now FREE for any business or community organisation to join up at westcountrywomen. co.uk/directory THE FIRST TWO YEARS In their first year, they had 16 winning women across 15 categories. Winners included Hannah Shead (Trevi), Sarah Newberry (YMCA Plymouth), Sophie Alway (Georgia’s Voice) and Samantha Jackman (Boost Innovations). Wonderful winners, some of which were featured on the first season of their podcast.

For the second year, there were even more categories including new ones Food & Drink, Charity, and Arts & Culture. With 16 categories, there were over 1500 nominations from across the four counties, with winners with interesting stories to tell.

Winners included Lyn Paxman (EvolveYou), Jan Ford (The Loving Abductor), Emilie Perring (Plymouth Cheerleaders) and Glayne Price (LHC Design). A full list of winners for 2023 can be found on their website.

EVENTS AND GET TOGETHERS West Country Women currently have many events across the year. The first begins the year on March 8th, this is International Women’s Day. This event is run each year as a conference and is at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Plymouth again this year with a full schedule of speakers throughout the day. Then on April 18th, they open nominations and applications with a wonderful launch breakfast kindly hosted at Womble Bond Dickinson’s Plymouth offices.

Discover Dartmouth has had a bumper 2023 and is ending the year with a bang - a new Campaign Launch ‘Discover the Dart’!

During 2023 we have seen an increase in traffic to our website www.discoverdartmouth.com with a month on month increase of users by approximately 10% per month compared to 2022. We are estimating over 145,000 users by the end of 2023.

Our social media accounts are also growing, and our monthly reach is exceeding 20,000 with a cumulative total for the year of over 400,000.

Our strong images and content through our social media platforms are seeing some fantastic engagement from visitors and the businesses in the town.

We have also seen an increase in business engagement through 2023 with an increase of businesses joining Discover Dartmouth as members. Our ‘Drop-in Sessions’ through 2023 have been hugely successful with local business owners attending to meet the team and network with other likeminded professionals.

Discover Dartmouth in partnership with Visit Totnes has launched a new marketing campaign to help attract more visitors to the towns over the shoulder period. Discover the Dart is a new marketing campaign showcasing the River Dart as a key visitor experience and how connected Dartmouth is with Totnes by river.

The campaign will highlight all the great on the water activities including stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing and boat trips plus the amazing attractions we have on and near the Dart including Dartmouth Castle, Dartmouth Steam Railway, Greenway House, Totnes Castle, Dartington Hall plus Sandridge Barton and Sharpham Estate for the food and drink element.

Throughout the campaign there will also be a focus on Nature on the Dart, Food and Drink on the Dart and Staying on Dart including visitors arriving by sail boat. The campaign will also feature competitions with some lovely

prizes from Dartington Hall and Dartmouth Steam Railway.

We are hoping this campaign will highlight all the fantastic local businesses in and around the River Dart from Dartmouth to Totnes. The River Dart is a stunning waterway winding for 47 miles from the heart of Dartmoor to its magnificent estuary in Dartmouth. It’s a true gem of South Devon, offering a rich tapestry of natural beauty, historic landmarks, and recreational opportunities.

A new illustrative map of the River Dart has also been designed by the Discover Dartmouth team to help showcase the great places and things to do on the Dart and will feature as part of the campaign.

Land and Sea are both equipped for a selfcatering break and the two cottages can interconnect to accommodate groups of up to nine people, but guests are encouraged to dine at the Millbrook Inn just across the road for an exceptional experience.

This is a beautiful old pub that is part of the fabric of the local community. It has recently been refurbished to the highest standard, but it still retains a quintessentially English feel. With its low ceilings, cosy fire and warm welcome adding to the inviting atmosphere, it’s a place where people love to gather, whether it’s for a pint, to enjoy live music and a roast on Sunday’s, or to feast on incredible food.

The menus are outstanding with the kitchen team putting seasonal ingredients at the forefront. Organic meats are sourced from Fowlescombe Farm, part of the Millbrook Inn’s family which has adopted regenerative farming techniques. Here rare, heritage breed beef, lamb and pork are reared and butchered to the highest standard. Locally landed fresh fish and seafood and organic vegetables, grown on the farm, ensure menus are always in tune with the seasons. Charcuterie is from Rare & Pasture, also based at Fowlescombe Farm.

As a free house the Millbrook Inn showcases the best that Devon has to offer. On tap there are a range of cask ales and beers from local breweries. A changing wine list features renowned favourites and interesting bottles from small, organic and biodynamic producers.

During late spring and summer, the Millbrook Inn is famed for cooking up a feast on the outside grill which is also fired up to coincide with high tide eating. Honkytonk Wine Library Meet Fitzroy and Zoe Spencer, the dynamic duo behind Honkytonk Wine Library & Fitz Spence Limited.

Fitzroy’s extensive career in the catering and hospitality sector, coupled with Zoe’s background in clerical and accounting, laid the foundation for Honkytonk’s unique blend of wine appreciation and a laid-back atmosphere.

Despite facing challenges typical of Plymouth hospitality businesses over the past 5 years, Honkytonk has remained a sought-after destination since its inception in October 2018, embodying the motto “Wine Makes Conversation.”

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I find motivation in helping others and deriving a sense of fulfilment from contributing to people’s well-being. That’s why I chose hospitality - I love assisting and making a positive impact on others.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT HONKYTONK? My favourite aspect of working at HTWL is the serene and relaxed atmosphere, even during busy periods. It allows the time to interact and converse with both new and regular customers, forming genuine connections with them.

BRIEF BACKGROUND: I was born in Devizes, Wiltshire, and came to Plymouth for University, where I’m studying Marine Biology and Oceanography, aiming to complete my degree next year. At 23, I was 8 years old when I first stepped into the hospitality sector helping my mother in her restaurant FAVOURITE WINE AND WHY: From Honkytonk’s wine list, I highly recommend Gikas from Greece - it’s very quaffable and light. My all-time favourite is Alberino for its light and fruit-driven profile, particularly the notes of stone fruit, especially peach so if you wish to get on my good side a glass of Alberino and your half way there.

FAVOURITE FOOD Choosing a favourite is challenging as it depends on my mood. However, I lean towards options like Thai curry, bao buns, chow Mein, or a good steak.

BEST COUNTRY YOU’VE VISITED AND WHY: Sweden holds a special place for me. Immersing myself in the marine biology of the fjord, feeling exhausted yet excited every day, made everything feel just right.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Toby’s Garden Festival yet again promises two days of delight, celebration and inspiration for gardeners and lovers of the great outdoors, on the stunning grounds of Powderham Castle, near Exeter. Hosted by BBC Two Gardeners’ World presenter Toby Buckland, on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th May, the family friendly two day extravaganza boasts an impressive programme full of free gardening and food and drink talks, demonstrations, tastings and workshops plus live music.

Headlining Toby’s Garden Festival this year alongside Toby, are fellow BBC Two Gardeners’ World presenters, Rachel de Thame and Sue Kent. Broadcaster, writer and passionate gardener, Rachel hosts talks on Saturday 4th, giving attendees insights into her gardening ethos and introducing her new book, ‘A Flower Garden For Pollinators’.

Sue, an RHS Ambassador for disability, writer and awardwinning garden designer will be speaking with Toby on Friday 3rd May. Both are also conducting book signings.

Other speakers over the two days include RHS judge Jim Buttress, blogger, beekeeper and veg grower Olga Grieves, garden writer Becky Searle as well as many others.

Much more than purely a garden festival it’s an unmissable two days, with over 200 exhibitors including awardwinning RHS Chelsea Flower Show plant nurseries and British-grown trees, roses, border and wild flowers, aquatics, shrubs and houseplants plus sculptures and garden furniture and an ‘Artisan Barn’ showcasing local artists, crafts, ceramics, textiles, glassware and jewellery.

Heritage craft demonstrations including stave baskets and brush making and free flower crown making workshops with the help of the British Academy of Flower Arts, also run over the two days.

Returning for a second year, Food Drink Devon’s food and drink market is in the castle’s beautiful courtyard. Featuring 20 local producers there’ll be the chance to meet the makers and sample some of the county’s finest food and drink. ‘Feast Street’ returns, offering visitors the perfect place for a bite to eat with a fantastic selection of delicious curated street food and pop-up bars from around the region. Festival goers can then sit by the Castle lake while listening to live music from talented Devon musicians.

Although the individual meadows might be small, together they will create a network of much needed feed stations for threatened bees and pollinators.

Other attractions throughout the festival include taking a ride on the land train around Powderham Castle’s grounds, plus miniature steam engine rides, vintage tractors and Land Rovers.

BANOFFEE CORNISH FAIRINGS With their tell-tale crackled top, golden syrup flavour and spicy ginger bite, Cornish fairings are a step up from your everyday ginger biscuit. They were once so popular at fairs that the name stuck and they’ve been known as the fairing ever since. We’ve put a twist on this Cornish classic, with our banoffee inspired treat.

INGREDIENTS - 125g plain flour - 1 tsp baking powder - 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda - 1 tsp ground ginger - 1 tsp ground mixed spice - 60g Trewithen Dairy Salted Butter, chilled - 60g caster sugar - 4 tsp golden syrup - 2 bananas, sliced - 200g Trewithen Dairy Cornish Clotted Cream - 200g Dulce de leche

METHOD Preheat oven to 180c and line two baking trays with baking parchment.

Sift the flour, bicarb, baking powder and spices into a large bowl.

Rub the butter into the mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs - a good tip is grating the block of cold butter into the flour mixture to get a good head start!

Stir through the sugar, before adding the golden syrup. Mix until it forms a dough, but be careful not to overwork it so the fairings don’t become tough. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap with cling film and chill for at least half an hour.

When the dough has rested, divide it into equal portions and roll each piece into a small ball. Arrange the balls on the lined baking trays with plenty of space for them to spread out in the oven.

Bake in the centre of the oven for approx 10 minutes or until golden and have taken on the characteristic fairing crackle. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

When cooled, spread a thick layer of clotted cream over the flat side of the fairing. Top with slices of banana.

Spread another flat side of fairing with dulce de leche and sandwich together. Repeat until all are done. Enjoy with a cup of tea!

METHOD 1) Either using your hands or a food processor, rub the butter into the flour until it looks like coarse breadcrumbs 2) Add the finely ground cheese and the pepper and knead lightly until a dough forms - it should be on the drier side. If the dough will not come together, add a tablespoon of cold water 3) Once the dough has come together, wrap it in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes 4) Preheat the oven to 190°C Roll the dough out to the thickness of a £1 coin and cut out rounds, place them on a baking sheet and chill again for 10-15 minutes 5) Brush the biscuits with eggwash and sprinkle with more cheese.

METHOD 1) Preheat the oven to 90oC and line a large baking tray with baking parchment.

2) Place the egg whites into a large bowl or bowl of a stand mixer. You’ll need an electric hand whisk or stand mixer to get the volume required for great meringue, don’t try to do it by hand. Whisk the whites until they resemble stiff peaks.

3) Add the sugar into the egg whites one a spoonful at a time, and let each spoonful fully mix in before adding the next.

4) When all the sugar has been added, turn the mixer speed up and whisk for 8-10 minutes or until the mixture is really thick and glossy. If you rub a small amount between your fingers, you shouldn’t be able to feel any grains of sugar. If it still feels gritty, continue to whisk for a few more minutes until it feels smooth. Fold in the raspberry pieces.

5) Open up a piping bag, fold over the top and fill with the meringue mixture. Use a little bit of meringue to secure the baking parchment to the baking tray, then pipe kisses all over the tray.

6. Bake for 1 hour – 1 hour 30 minutes until the kisses feel dry to the touch, and if you pick one up the base should be firm when pressed. Allow to cool completely before sandwiching with clotted cream and serving!

METHOD 1) In a saucepan, warm the water and milk over a low heat until lukewarm.

Off heat, add the sugar and mix until dissolved. Add the yeast and stir, then set aside and leave to bloom for 5 minutes 2) Add the flour and salt to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment, pour over the milk and water mixture and mix on a slow speed until incorporated. Add the eggs and mix for a further 5 minutes until a sticky dough forms 3) Turn the speed up to a medium/high setting and start adding the butter, a tablespoon at a time. Continue mixing until the butter is incorporated and the dough is silky - it won’t be dry but shouldn’t leave dough behind in the mixer 4) Shape into a smooth ball and leave in a covered place for 1 hour to prove - you may want to leave it in a warm spot like your airing cupboard!

5) Once the dough has doubled in size, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape the pieces into rolls by tucking the messy side into itself, as if you’re trying to turn the dough pieces inside out

CUATRO LECHES CAKE Try your hand at our take on a cuatro leches cake - meaning ‘four milks cake’. It’s a light, fluffy vanilla sponge soaked with whole milk, evaporated milk, condensed milk and Cornish clotted cream to make it moist throughout. Topped with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, it’s perfect to accompany mid-morning coffee. It’s even better if you allow the milk to absorb into the cake overnight, but don’t worry if you don’t have time.

INGREDIENTS - 4 Eggs, separated

- 200ml Evaporated Milk

- 200g Caster Sugar

- 200g Trewithen Dairy Cornish Clotted Cream

- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

- 200ml Sweetened Condensed Milk

- 200g Plain flour

- 300ml Double Cream

- 1 tsp Baking Powder

- 2 tsp Ground Cinnamon

- 100ml Trewithen Dairy Whole Milk

METHOD 1) Heat oven to 180c. Lightly grease and line a 20cm square cake in.

2) Whisk the egg whites until thickened, before slowly adding half of the caster sugar, one tablespoon at a time. Continue whisking until the mixture is stiff and glossy.

3) In a separate large bowl, whisk the egg yolks, remaining sugar and vanilla until pale and fluffy. Add the flour, baking powder and milk to the egg yolks and gently fold together until thoroughly combined.

4) Using a large metal spoon, add a spoonful of egg whites to the yolk mixture. Combine thoroughly, before very gently folding the remaining egg whites through - one spoonful at a time, aiming to retain as many of those lovely bubbles as possible.

5) Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for 40 minutes, until an inserted skewer comes out clean.

Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tin.

6) Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the evaporated milk, Cornish clotted cream and condensed milk.

7) Poke holes all over the cake, before pouring over half the milky cream mixture. When the majority of the mixture has absorbed into the sponge, pour over a little more. Any remaining sauce can be served on the side. Refrigerate overnight if you can, although it’ll still be delicious if you don’t have time.

8) To serve, whip the remaining cream until it just holds soft peaks. Spread over the top of the cake before finishing with a generous dusting of cinnamon. Serve with the sauce on the side to pour over.

Your Partnerships Charitable Cup Challenge Your Partnerships has always been an advocate for voluntary sector organisations getting involved in business networking, and has always supported charities, by hosting fundraiser events, and promoting good causes.

It is our pleasure, here at YP, to announce our new Charitable Cup Challenge, brand new for 2024. It is a great way of developing relationships between local businesses and the charities and voluntary organisations doing great work in our communities, while also helping those charities to fundraise to continue their important work.

BUSINESSES SUPPORTING CHARITIES Many businesses truly value their efforts towards social responsibility, whether that plays out in donating time, or money, or goods to local causes, or linking up via sponsorship opportunities. Whatever the cause, business support from the business sector can be vital to Charities, Trusts and CICs, and can play a huge role in raising their profile locally as well as fundraising.

And the businesses themselves undoubtable benefit from the association, being known as ‘good people’, and enjoying reputational benefits.

CHARITABLE CUP CHALLENGE Our Charitable Cup Challenge will involve teams from businesses, or made up of sole traders and small businesses, competing against each other across a calendar year. The businesses involved will raise money, and participate in YP-organised events, winning points according to how they place, and how much they raise. Your Partnerships will be organising events such as Bake-offs, and scavenger hunts, School sports-day-style events, and decidedly more grown-up cocktail making contests.

Each County or area will have its own competition, to keep things local, and the ‘years’ will be staggered. Cornwall’s will be from April 2024 to March 2025, with Devon beginning in June 2024, Somerset in September 2024, Bristol from November 2024, and other areas being added in as they join the Your Partnerships family.

Each area will have six local voluntary organisations to support, whether they are charities, Trusts, CICs or other organisations, but the aim is to keep the money raised local, where possible.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? Businesses are invited to get involved in their local area – or areas. Teams of between four and ten people can enter, with a registration fee of £200, which launch the fundraising pot for the Charitable Cup Challenge in that area.

Sole Traders and small businesses are also invited to join as individuals, and will be assigned teams on entry with an entry fee of £50 each.

Georgia’s Voice is a suicide prevention charity offering emotional support to young women with mental health concerns, aged 18-25 years old in Cornwall. The charity was founded by Sophie Alway in memory of her daughter Georgia Gallaway who took her own life.

Through the passion and hard work of their amazing team, the aim is to reduce the rate of suicide in young women by making them realise they’re not alone, and that it’s not the only option.

Suicide is currently the leading cause of death in young people under 26. According to the Office of National Statistics, females aged 24 years or under have seen the largest increase in the suicide rate since records began in 1981.

The vision of Georgia’s Voice is to be safe, stronger, and better – working with others to ensure every young woman in Cornwall is understood, supported, and empowered. They’re on a mission to offer free, friendly, safe spaces for young women in every town in Cornwall. They have even trained a team of volunteer facilitators to hold free weekly support groups.

This will take some doing, but they already have 12 fantastic groups from Wadebridge to Penzance with more launching soon. Getting some well-deserved recognition Their founder and one of the group facilitators have now both won West Country Women Awards.

Sophie Alway won the ‘Phoenix Award’ in 2022, and then Emily Tisshaw won the ‘Inspirational Leader Award’ in 2023. They really have showed resilience, having stepped up to the challenge by inspiring others.

Following Sophie’s win at the awards, they were selected to be their “Charity of the Year” for 2023.

MY MEMORY LAPSE STORY – THE BUSINESS WOMAN’S MENOPAUSE To get through my memory lapses, procrastination and lack of concentration I named my brain Brenda! Why – so I could call Brenda my brain’s “Executive Assistant” when I needed extra reinforcements to remember that vital piece of information…

So I would like to introduce you to Brenda “My Brain’s EA”.

She helps me to remember why I entered a room, who I am presenting to in a business meeting, where I left my phone and even the names of my own family, friends and colleagues.

Brenda continues to be the best Executive Assistant I have helped me navigate interesting and sometimes embarrassing situations in both my personal and professional life.

SO WHAT CAUSES MEMORY LAPSES? It is a drop in our hormone levels that is responsible for our memory and concentration problems. Our Central Nervous System, which includes our brain, contains oestrogen receptors. The hippocampus in our complex brain structure has a major role in learning and memory.

The efficiency of the hippocampus is impacted by oestrogen levels and fluctuations. As a result, we can experience: • short-term memory problems • taking longer to learn new things • difficulty in maintaining concentration levels • struggle with planning or procrastination

In addition to oestrogen impacting our brain, stress levels can also impact the efficiency of our hippocampus. This is due to elevated levels of cortisol circulating through our central nervous system and hippocampus. Chronic stress can impair our executive functions, such as short term memory, planning, and attention.

As a consequence we have to prioritise our Brain Health.

Above all, this helps us Think Clearly as we enter our PeriMenopause and Menopause transition.

Why is being a family business so significant to you?

Our brand was named after my two Grandmothers, Irene and Jenny, and everything about it centres around family. We repurpose our client’s family jewellery, inherited from loved-ones. We tell the stories behind heirlooms and special gemstones. We create beautiful, new pieces which our clients can eventually pass down to the next generation.

Being a mother-daughter team ourselves means we understand the importance of trust and relationships.

We don’t take anything for granted and are truly grateful for every commission we receive. It is a privilege for us to work with such extraordinary women and we look after their precious family heirlooms as if they are our own.

What other values are important to your brand?

Anita and I are extremely proud to be a female-led business. As women, we have so many plates to spin and the juggling of a career and family can be overwhelming at times. But we want to show that it IS possible for women to build the life they want and not apologise for it.

I want my children to see me building my empire whilst raising a family, caring for loved-ones, looking after my health and having fun. I’m fortunate to have a wonderful husband (who happens to be a very talented photographer and takes all our beautiful photos) and who shares the mental load. Without a brilliant network supporting you and lifting you up, it would be impossible.

We are also championing sustainable luxury - we only work with pre-loved, family gemstones, our supply chain is drastically smaller than with the production of ‘new’ jewellery and there is very little wastage. In today’s fast-paced, throw-away world, we are committed to reusing, repurposing and preserving the beauty of what already exists.

What is the ‘magic’ of Irene & Jenny?

The Irene & Jenny experience is about so much more than just having a piece of jewellery made. We are storytellers. We breathe new life into gemstones which have been locked away and forgotten. The magic really happens when we hand-deliver the breathtaking, new, modern piece to our client. There are usually tears.
