HEALTHCARE PROGRAM

ÂŽ

Who we are

We are a FUNDAP program that was constituted in 2001, and dedicated to the design, validation, and execution of health projects oriented to: 1) the generation of capacities in the population for the prevention of diseases, through the training of qualified personnel for basic care in health; and 2) primary medical attention, emphasizing maternal and child health and education in family nutrition, respecting the right to life and human dignity.

What we do

Our goal is to generate a culture for the prevention of diseases and self-care, as basic elements for human development. Regulated by the motto “knowing how to save lives, we focus our initiatives on the prevention of diseases and on the generation of basic conditions that allow individuals and families to access new levels of development. The two columns on which our actions are built are: the training of health agents who can meet basic needs at the community level and work with families as the first responsible parties for the health of its members.

How we work

With the vision of educating the population in preventive health and providing accessible health services to the lowest income sectors, the Healthcare Program has established its permanent actions grouped into two sectors: the health education sector that seeks the qualification of personnel in health and maternal and child specialization; the primary health care sector, whose strategic axes are maternal and child care, the provision of first aid and basic care, health education and family nutrition.

Where we work

The Health Program focuses its work efforts on the lower income sectors, especially on the rural and semi-urban populations of southwestern Guatemala.

The territory served covers an area of 29,989 km2, which represent 27.53% of the national territory.

HEALTH INITIATIVES

Auxiliary Nursing School

Medical Clinics

This is a model of formal technical health education (recognized and accredited by the Ministry of Public Health), which focuses on the training of auxiliary nurses at community level with maternal and child specialties, to be the basic and preventive education agents and primary health care workers in the rural area.

These are basic health care centers, located in cities of convergence and seek to meet the needs of women and children, providing general consultation services, nutritional recovery plans, pediatric consultation, prenatal check-ups, and general medical follow-up. The care can be provided both from medical clinics, as well as through medical campaigns in distant communities.

Training for Health Promoters This program directs its efforts towards the training of volunteer health promoters, working in communities in western Guatemala. The training lasts 10 months, providing basic training so that graduates can provide first aid, training, counseling, and timely referral in the primary health areas, linking to public or private services in their community.

Nutritional Recovery The initiatives of nutritional recovery are intended to identify, provide comprehensive care, and provide follow-up to highly vulnerable people who are at risk due to their nutritional situation. This program meets the needs of the population through two strategies: a) MarĂa Project, aimed at expectant mothers with nutritional deficiencies, to contribute to their nutritional health and influence the nutrition of the baby in the formation phase and intrauterine growth; b) Sebastiana Project, aimed at children between the ages of 6 months to 5 years, who suffer from malnutrition, to achieve their nutritional recovery and influence their healthy development.
