Welcome to First United Methodist Church Richardson!

The story of First United Methodist Church Richardson began in “borrowed space” 125 years ago. With fifteen charter members and a pastor the foundation was started for a church that now serves over 6,000 members. It is a church that has a history of vision and service. The church has stood in four different locations and buildings. “The history of this church,” says Dr. Oliphint, senior pastor, “reflects the faith, optimism and determination of its congregation over the years and serves as an important reminder that to endure, a church must be much more than just a building.”

In March of 2006 the congregation boldly and enthusiastically wrote another chapter in its history by moving a vibrant congregation to the present 24 acres. The focus of this transition was always on considering this beautiful campus to be a mission station. . .that would make it possible for us to share the love of Christ with more people. The ministries of this church are centered around the fact that the grace of God is available to everyone. To the over 300,000 people that travel by this Central Expressway location every day we offer inspiring worship, study opportunities to grow in faith, dynamic children’s and youth ministries, outstanding music program, a community-oriented senior adult ministry, and numerous ways to put faith into action by serving those in need.

Mike Slaughter

Lead pastor at Ginghamsburg Church in Ohio. Mike is the three-decade dreamer of this church and spiritual entrepreneur of ministry marketplace innovations. His life-long passion to reach the lost and set the oppressed free has now made him a tireless and leading advocate for the displaced children, women and men of Darfur, Sudan. Ginghamsburg Church has become known as an early innovator of small group ministry, the Church “media reformation” and cyberministry, with the website averaging 50,000 visits monthly from around the world. He is the author of multiple books for church leaders.

Clayton Oliphint

Senior pastor of First United Methodist Church Richardson. Clayton began his ministry at a three circuit pastorate in Kansas in 1983. After serving in ministry in the North Texas Conference he was moved to Richardson in 2001. Every church he has served has shown large increases in worship attendance, new members and mission giving. He leads his staff and congregation around the team concept. He is known for his strong leadership at every level in the United Methodist Church and for leadership in the community. An outstanding preacher and public speaker who connects with people exactly where they are but challenges all to raise the bar – give more, serve more, and be a disciple of Jesus Christ in every part of their lives.

Lisa Greenwood

Contemporary Worship Pastor at First United Methodist Church Richardson. Lisa is a consulting pastor and ministry strategist with Horizons Stewardship Company. Lisa’s belief that ministry is about changing lives is reflected in her work. . .whether it’s preaching and casting a vision, leading transformation or developing a culture of generosity in the local church, creating contemporary worship communities attractive to the de-churched, leading local community efforts to eliminate poverty, or guiding explosive youth ministries. . .it’s all for the purpose of helping people experience a love that knows no bounds.

Rick Bezet

Founder and lead pastor of New Life Church in Central Arkansas. New Life is a growing church with seven campuses and 18 total services. Rick left the world of professional golf to follow God’s call for his life. Rick is one of the founding pastors of the Association of Related Churches (ARC), an organization designed to plant churches and impact the world through missions. Rick speaks across America and around the world, sharing his passion and vision for church planting and leadership.

Chris Hodges

Founder and senior pastor of Church of the Highlands in Alabama. Under his leadership, Church of the Highlands offers 23 worship services each weekend at eight campuses with over 14,000 people attending weekly. Chris Hodges is known for his relevant teaching style, as well as his passion for developing leaders and planting life-giving churches around the world. He co-founded ARC (Association of Related Churches) in 2001 which has planted over 200 churches all across the USA.

Olu Brown

Lead pastor of Impact Church, a new church currently meeting in a middle school in West End Atlanta. Olu is co-author of Zero to 80: Innovative Ideas for Planting and Accelerating Church Growth. www.0to80.org

Rex Miller

Nationally respected futurist, theologian, consultant, speaker and communications expert. He associated himself in recent years with the architectural, engineering and construction industries. Rex believes that the challenges that face these industries are the same threats facing all traditional institutions and industries. Recently Rex joined TAG Consulting as Senior Partner. He is a certified in Core Clarity training and a member of the National Speakers Association. Author of The Millennium Matrix: Reclaiming the Past and Reframing the Future of the Church; The Millennium Matrix; and The Commercial Real Estate Revolution.

Reggie McNeal

Denominational executive and leadership development coach. He has served as a founding pastor of a new church and been in local congregational leadership for over 20 years. He has lectured as adjunct faculty for multiple seminaries, as well as served as consultant to local churches. Reggie has contributed to numerous publications and church leadership journals. His books include Revolution in Leadership; A Work of Heart: Understanding how God Shapes Spiritual Leaders; The Present Future; Practicing Greatness; Get A Life!; Missional Renaissance: Changing the Scorecard for the Church.

Rusti Moore

Senior pastor of Wildwood United Methodist Church in Magnolia, Texas. Raised a Southern Baptist, it was shocking in 2000 for Rusti to become the first woman elder in the Texas Annual Conference to start a United Methodist Church. 43 visionary people were granted a charter in 2001 and ten years later Rusti preaches to a congregation of 750 congregants who support her vision of being an extension of God’s loving hands. Wildwood is known for its numerous hands-on mission ministries. In 2011 the Texas Annual Conference recognized this church as one of three receiving the most professions of faith in the previous year.

Jorge Acevedo

Lead pastor of Grace Church, a multi-site United Methodist congregation in Southwest Florida. This church has grown its weekend attendance from 400 to over 2,600 in the past thirteen years. Grace Church is recognized as having one of the largest and most effective recovery ministries in America with over 800 people involved weekly in recovery ministries. Jorge is co-author of The Heart of Youth Ministry and writes extensively for numerous Methodist publications. www.egracechurch.com

Paul Rasmussen

Lead pastor for Cornerstone, the contemporary worship community of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas and preaching pastor for a satellite campus, Munger Place United Methodist Church which opened in 2010.

He is a fourth generation Methodist minister, however, his professional career began as a college basketball coach!

Colleen Barrett

President Emeritus of Southwest Airlines Co. Ms. Barrett was a driving force behind Southwest Airlines’ renowned customer-focused culture. Originally hired as a corporate secretary in 1978, she was mentored by Herb Kelleher and later held positions of increasing importance: Vice President of Administration, Executive Vice President of Customers and Chief Operating Officer before serving as President from 2001 to 2008.

Ray Hunt

Chairman, President, and CEO of Hunt Consolidated, Inc. Mr. Hunt’s association with Hunt Oil Company began in 1958 as a summer employee in the oil fields. After graduating from SMU in 1965 as a Distinguished Scholar with a degree in economics, Hunt joined the family legacy. He has since earned numerous awards for his leadership and innovative impact on the energy industry, service to civic institutions, corporate citizenship and humanitarian efforts.

R. Gerald Turner

President of Southern Methodist University. Mr. Turner is leading an era of unprecedented progress as the University approaches the centennial of its founding in 2011 and of its opening in 2015. Under his leadership, The Second Century Campaign seeks resources for a dramatic increase in academic quality and impact. A new strategic plan guides the University’s advancement, and a master plan is reshaping the physical profile of the campus. Southern Methodist University is a private, comprehensive university of 11,000 students enrolled in seven degree-granting schools.

The United Methodist Church continues to close churches in impoverished areas only to plant churches in wealthier areas. Rev. Owen K. Ross, Pastor of Christ’s Foundry United Methodist Mission, offers a model for planting churches among the poorest.

Since the physical location of the church changed in 2006, the Church Council of First United Methodist Church Richardson knew that God had much more in store for its members than just a beautiful new facility. McKenzie, George W. and Nell Ayers LeVan Endowed Chair of Preaching and Worship, Perkins School of Theology This workshop looks at shaping sermons as a series of scenes as a way of both teaching biblical truths and reaching people in the midst of mundane situations in the life they and the life God calls us to live.

Pastoring a large church and trying to maintain a “normal” family life is stressful. This session will address the “myth” of balance, and share practical advice on keeping your family healthy and whole, and maintaining your own spiritual health.

The Art of the Ask Facilitated by: Joe Park, Partner, Horizons Stewardship Company and Dr. Stan Copeland, Senior Pastor, Lover’s Lane United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas The simple act of asking “in person” for a financial gift can increase the size of the gift, studies say, by over 40% but actually doing so can be terrifying. A well-formed and faithful ask can be transformative for both the church’s ministry and the individual giver. This session offers seasoned experience and tested principles to help you successfully fund vision through personal invitations to give.

New Traditional Music...More Than a Sunday Morning Anthem Facilitated by: Rev. Karen Chraska, Director of Music Ministry, Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church, Flower Mound, Texas and Mike Lightfoot, Director of Music Ministry, First United Methodist Church Richardson, Texas Two concerts in one season; one featuring the Brahms Requiem in German and the other featuring Chancel Choir with Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers! Both were met with equal success! These two directors of large church music programs will discuss ways of building a vibrant, healthy music ministry that feeds the members of the choir while inspiring the members of their congregation. Traditional music can no longer be about filling an anthem slot over 52 consecutive Sundays. In order to reach today’s congregation we must offer music from G.F. Handel to Moses Hogan; from J.S. Bach to Mack Wilberg.

Where There is Fruit...There Are Fruit flies: Dealing With The Problems of Success Facilitated by: Jim Ozier, Director of New Church Development & Congregational Transformation, NTC Conversation in almost any United Methodist circle soon moves to the topic of “Fruitfulness.” It is no wonder that Jesus used the metaphor of fruitfulness...it speaks of being productive; of being successful. The metaphor is not complete without the realization that with fruit there come fruit flies! They may look like obstinate members, facility challenges, fatigue, money woes, and on and on....but they are there buzzing around.

Learn how to deal with the problems of success – focusing on overcoming complacency and complaining, while building momentum.
