a message from our senior pastor

M

any of us have questions about our faith. If you get serious about following Jesus and begin to study the Bible, it generally leads you to ask questions. Some of those questions are regarding how God works in our lives and in the world or how the Bible came to be and what authority it has for our lives. Some of our questions are about whether this is true, and if so, how?

Sometimes we are questioning what Jesus wants us to do with our lives and the implications of that for our lifestyle, our choices, our participation in our community, and more. So many questions! And we don’t always have easy, black and white answers. However, as we continue to struggle with questions and doubts, often we are led to a deeper place in our journey with God. One of the most important questions with which you will wrestle in your life is this: who is Jesus? Specifically, who is Jesus

to you? During the season of Lent, leading to Easter, we are focusing on how Jesus answered this question about himself as he spoke the “I Am” sayings.

In these sayings in the gospel of John, we learn who Jesus is and the difference he makes in our lives. Each sermon during Lent will look deeper at these statements and what they reveal to us about Jesus.

I hope you will make plans now to join us for worship, either in person or online, and especially for our Holy Week and Easter services. Wrestling with these “I Am” statements will ultimately bless us as we grow deeper in our understanding of how much God loves us.

As we prepare for Easter Sunday and the good news of resurrection, I hope you will cling

to the promises of faith. We are people of the resurrection! We believe in a God who raised his Son and has promised to raise us with him. This is not just the good news we need when we die; it is good news as we live! God is at work right now, raising us up.

Through the resurrection, God offers us strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow!

Teaching is one of the most demanding but also one of the most rewarding jobs possible. Yes, we teach students important things. But we do so much more.

Depending on the day, we are counselors, referees, advocates, confidantes, cheerleaders, and semi-nurses. I have helped a child grab a trash can as she vomited, told a student on the side that I am sorry for his loss (that he was trying to hide), and had tears in my eyes as I helped a student finally grasp a concept - all in one day. No one who hasn't been a teacher can truly understand what our daily life is like.

Heidi:

Shelley:

Elementary students talk about church, God, and values. They are listening in Sunday School, Vacation Bible Camp, Children’s Choir, etc.

I truly couldn’t love my job more. Teaching is hard - there is no doubt about that. I wish instead of assuming that just because it is a difficult job, that all teachers are miserable. With the demands of the past few years, I don’t feel like there is a lot of space for teachers to express the joys in their job, and I would love to see that change. That said, please continue to love on your children's teachers! Encouragement from parents goes SUCH a long way.

Lauren:

I am proud and grateful to be able to provide a happy place for my students and fellow teachers. They can come see me at any time during the day, and I know that freedom brings my students joy and my teachers relief.

Anne:

It is a privilege and an honor to be entrusted with children’s education. One of my most special moments involved a student who had never spoken at preschool or kindergarten (selective mutism due to trauma). He finally felt a comfort level and enough trust to begin speaking in my classroom. I was overjoyed!

Shelley:

2. What is something you're proud of?

Pressure coming from all sides makes teaching incredibly hard right now.

Expectations and curriculum change throughout the year; students have fallen behind academically and socially because of COVID; and parents seem to be pushing back at teachers more often than lifting up and supporting them. All of these forces are hopefully coming from the same place - we all want kids to learn and grow. We just don’t always agree on what that should look like.

Anne: is 3. What rd really ha ? right now

Shelley:

We work tremendously long hours. The planning, multi-disciplinary training, paperwork, and documentation, particularly in special education, is overwhelming. It can be difficult to find time for family and self-care.

The constant pivots are hard. I thrive on order and routine, and change is not my favorite thing. It seems like as soon as we get used to something in education, we are changing. It has taught me to let go of the expectations I may have and embrace flexibility.

Lauren:

The resiliency and openness of children give me hope. It doesn't matter where they come from or what baggage they have, with the love and care of a good teacher, they can grow so much. They want to do well; they want to be kind; they want to achieve their best. They just need the right opportunity to do so.

Heidi:

I know that educators are doing their best every single day. They are showing up and pouring their hearts into their students. They are giving their teammates breaks, leaving notes of encouragement, and putting on a smile for anyone who needs it.

Anne:

Seeing students running into the school because they are so happy to be there gives me hope. When a student I don’t know gives me a hug as he walks in his bus line, it helps me to know that students feel love and support at school.

Shelley:

4. What gives you hope?

Following up on our Seeking Shalom sermon series, we want to highlight a couple of the topics again - mental wholeness and relational wholeness – with information shared by Dr. Terry Parsons and Rabbi Elana Zelony.

Prioritizing Mental Wholeness

It was my privilege to lead an evening learning community continuing the conversation around mental health. I am grateful to be able to share some of those thoughts again and hope they are a blessing to you as we continue pulling the conversation into the light.

How Are You Really?

What a time this is! COVID and social issues combined with our own personal challenges have taken a tremendous toll on all of us. What have the past couple of years been like for you? How are you doing? How are you really doing?

On a scale of 0 to 100 how strongly have you felt each of these?

Stressed _________ Anxious _________ Scared _________ Frustrated _________ Angry _________ Overwhelmed _________ Tired _________ Exhausted _________ Pressured _________ Grieved _________ Depressed _________ Weary _________ It’s not a surprise we have these feelings, but when the numbers are high for a sustained period of time, we may need to seek additional help. This may be through the Caring Ministry team, counselors, psychologists, or psychiatrists.

What is Mental Wholeness?

Mental wholeness is crucial for our well-being, not only mentally, but also physically, emotionally, relationally, spiritually, and vocationally. Mental wholeness on one level is our ability to cope with life’s adversities such as the ones we have been experiencing. On another level, it is the ability to think, feel, connect, and function at higher levels. Mental wholeness is an active process that helps us to build resilience, grow, and thrive.

During the first year of the pandemic, a woman in her 70s was referred to me for counseling following the death of her husband. She had faithfully cared for him during his seven-year decline from Alzheimer’s disease. She was exhausted, grieving, and depressed. But in the midst of those emotions, she also took intentional steps toward health. She expressed emotions she had carried for a long time, and she began to go outside for walks more

frequently. Next, she decided to do something for others. This was during the time of “the toilet paper crisis.” Since she was older, she could go to the grocery store early to avoid crowds and purchase toilet paper for some of her homebound friends. She masked, gloved, and purchased toilet paper and bottles of “fancy water” for her friends. Then, she delivered them to their front porches. Amid her grief, this “active process” helped her move to a higher level of mental wholeness. She smiled more; her sense of humor increased; she connected with others; and she began to watch worship services.

suggestions include: read scripture and good literature, pray, meditate, participate in worship, enjoy music, have good times with friends and family, hug the ones you love, be grateful, reach out to others, see beauty in nature, enjoy your pets, spend positive social media time, laugh, or simply take a breathing break to inhale the spirit of God and exhale to have peace.

One helpful acronym to keep in mind is the SANE way to Mental Wholeness.

S – Sleep for rest and Spiritual for peace A – Attitude ("This is the day the Lord has made…”)

N – Nutrition for your body and mind E – Exercise for your health

Mental wholeness and mental illness can be seen on a continuum. We all have times when we’re not thriving, but when on-going signs and symptoms affect the ability to function, that indicates mental illness.

Conditions such as major depression, debilitating anxiety, distorted thinking, suicidal ideation, and other disorders need treatment. In most cases, symptoms can be managed with a combination of medication and psychotherapy.

So, how are you really doing? Really well. Somewhat well. Not so well. Not well.

I encourage you to spend time checking in with yourself.

How are you really? Take care of yourself while loving God, loving others, and loving yourself. And finally, take a moment to say “shalom” each day as you bring forth peace, well-being, and wholeness.

FUMCR Pilots RISD’s We Read Together

We Read Together promises to make a difference in the lives of students in RISD. Because of our existing partnerships with Mark Twain and Greenwood Hills Elementary Schools, FUMCR is piloting the program this spring at those schools.

Research shows that children who do not read on grade-level by the end of 3rd grade have only a 1 in 8 chance of catching up to their grade-level peers. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a wider gap, especially among Pre-K – 2nd grade students.

We know that students who enter school lacking in reading readiness need additional intervention and resources. We also know that volunteers and mentors can play a pivotal role in helping students learn to read and gain confidence to build their skills. The mission of the program is to help ensure literacy success for all students.

This pilot program is taking place from March through May. Volunteers have been trained to help students during the school day in 30-minute sessions, one or more times a week.

We Read Together also provides for students’ access to books of their choice in their homes and empowers parents with literacy skills to assist their students at home and school.

RISD’s goal is to expand the program in the coming years to include more schools, faith communities, community organizations, and corporate partners. FUMCR can take great pride in the relationships and year-round support that

we provide to Mark Twain and Greenwood Hills. With the full endorsement and resources of RISD, We Read Together will take these partnerships to the next level. We have a special opportunity to bless these children. A big thanks to the 74 volunteers (of all ages) who signed up for the pilot program! We look forward to another exciting opportunity for more of our congregation to participate this fall.

Reading is the most critical academic skill for a student to master because it is the basis for all learning. YOU can help a child read, and their opportunities in life will be endless!

Thanks to your generosity, we’ve been able to send every student home with their own books, and we are positioned to send them home with even more at the end of this semester.

Children who do not read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school.

Compelling research shows that reading below the expected 3rd grade level is highly correlated to negative outcomes beyond high school, including incarceration and poverty.

Imagine if…

All students had access to self-selected books at home.

Every child had a parent or trusted adult to read with.

All students were reading on grade level.

We could change the trajectory of every student RISD serves.

Recently played Ariel in The Little Mermaid performed at North Texas Performing Arts

I love being a part of shows because they allow me to meet so many new people and bring lots of characters to life. Ariel is definitely one of my favorite roles that I have played. Music and theater have been a big part of my life since my first show when I was 8 (I’m 15 now), and I am so grateful for everything I have learned. Although I don’t plan on pursuing musical theater as a career, I know that it will always be a part of my life and has given me skills that will help me in the future.

Released her first single, “You’re My Everything" (iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon) I started writing this song after school one day when I was questioning my worth. I just didn’t feel like I was good enough, so I got out my guitar and started writing. “You’re My Everything” was the result. My dad played on the recording with me, and that was so special.

He’s been my number one supporter and motivator, along with my mom, throughout my entire 13 years. I’m so thankful for this experience and for everyone who’s listening. I know we’re always “good enough” for God because I truly believe that we are his everything.

Makenzie Smith

Accepted into Auburn University School of Nursing I’ve always known two things: the first being that I want to work with people and the second being that I want to work in medicine. I am extremely excited about connecting with patients and helping them to get better but nervous about new and challenging opportunities in the years ahead that will help to determine my path. I hope to come back to Texas to work and be closer to my family before continuing my education to become a nurse practitioner. I am so grateful to both my family and Auburn for the opportunity to pursue my nursing career!

The thing I would like others to know most about the Young Adult Ministry is how accepting the group is. When I joined, I was primarily using it as a way to meet new friends and felt hesitant to engage with the more religious aspects of the group. But I found people willing to discuss issues and topics on a variety of levels, including why I felt hesitant to open up about “God stuff.” Any kind of discussion about scripture or the church can fly, such as examining archaic practices at the time the Biblical text/practice came about. The group also has plenty of dinners out together, campfire nights, holiday parties, charity volunteering, and more. So if you’re ever thinking you “don’t have enough faith” to join a group like this, this is a perfect place to start.

It worked out all right for me!

From the time I joined the Young Adult Ministry Bible study, I was challenged to look at scripture in a new way and felt encouraged and supported by our group members’ unique perspectives. In just a few months, Tuesday nights have become a time of laughter, connection, and community as we deepen our relationships and our faith in God. Beyond Bible study, service has become a big part of the Young Adult Ministry. The commitment to showing up and helping others has been a thread that has woven us all together, and I’m looking forward to the growth of the group as we expand our presence in mission work. The Young Adult Ministry is an open and inclusive group, a space where varying perspectives are not only encouraged but sought out. We would love to have you join us in service and community!

Over the 2½ years that I’ve been attending FUMCR, I have truly enjoyed being a part of the growing Young Adult Ministry. It has become one of my most important communities here in DFW. The group consists of different ages, experiences, and interests, but we all bring these things to the table for conversations that collectively and individually grow us and create special bonds. Tuesday night meeting topics go all the way from the voice actor of the cartoon character Arthur to hard spiritual questions that we just may not have the answers to – and that’s okay. I’ve been inspired by the ways I’ve seen this group supporting each other through prayer, celebrating highs and lows, and showing up for even the simplest of moments. Having friends standing in front of the congregation with me when I joined the church recently was priceless. As this ministry continues, I hope that it grows even bigger, is an example of the discipline in discipleship, and makes a noticeable change in communities near and far for the glory of God.

living a legacy, leaving a legacy

M

y wife Debbie and I joined First United Methodist Church Richardson in August of 1992.

We were particularly attracted to the church’s commitment to children, and we wanted our kids to be part of that community. In the last 30 years, we’ve watched our kids grow and flourish, and today they have kids of their own. During that same time we have had the honor of serving on the Children’s Council, the Finance Committee, Church Council, and most recently, the FUMCR building committee that helped provide this amazing campus that we all call our church home.

We are all a living legacy to this church and to the community that we serve. During our years of serving with each of you, we have been continually amazed by the generosity of this congregation. Through recessions, debt issues, budget crises, and yes, even pandemics, the people of this church have always answered the call. As we consider the future and the legacy that we will leave for those who follow, our hope is to answer one more call. It is our intent to provide a portion of our estate to be dedicated to maintaining this church, its missions, and its commitment to this community.

The formation of the First United Methodist Church Richardson Foundation has given us the opportunity to answer that call. The single goal of the Foundation is to manage and grow a long-term endowment fund that will cover all the costs of operating this amazing campus that we enjoy. Providing for those costs will free up budget dollars to use for serving our countless mission efforts. I dream of the day that every dollar given in faith goes to missions, and none of that dollar goes to carpet or paint or utilities. This is unlike any giving that we have ever done before, and it is a gift that will literally last forever.

Debbie and I began our worship with this church community based on its commitment to our kids. Today, it is my heart’s sincere desire that our church will always have that same commitment to our youth, to our kids, and to our future. Building a long-term

I

f anything has become a constant lately, it’s living in a state of never-ending change, challenge, and ongoing upheaval.

For two years, we have adopted, assessed, and recalibrated health and safety protocols, following the shifts in guidance from our leading medical experts and changing our understanding of “normal.” Since the spring of 2021, an estimated 33 million Americans - including me - have quit their jobs as part of “the Great Resignation,” in many instances creating both personal and corporate anxiety.

And even as I write this piece, I am also watching the latest news out of Ukraine, where Russia is advancing with nuclear forces on alert, creating a sense of

uncertainty felt around the globe.

It seems fitting to acknowledge this ongoing change and pervasive unease during Lent, the season we spend in preparation for Easter. The heavy concern of uncertainties around our health, livelihoods, safety, and more can make it feel like we are living in the wilderness and the desolate wasteland that we associate with this liturgical season. But in Isaiah 43:19, the Lord tells us, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

These words still hold a powerful message for us today, just as they did for the Israelites. We know that through Christ, God has made a way and continues to do a new thing.

This year the North Texas Conference has shared Lenten resources centered on this idea of “doing a new thing,” and I’m inspired by the words of their Lenten benediction:

Whatever wilderness the Spirit has brought you to: walk in boldness, as a beloved child of God, walk in peace, under the shelter of the Most High, walk in faith, knowing Christ walks with you.

It’s my hope that during this season of reflection and preparation, we each come to see the places where God is at work in our world and live into the next “new thing” with boldness.

I’m honored to sit on the Methodist Children’s Home Board of Directors, as Clayton did for several years. A few weeks ago, I received a note of appreciation from Trey Oakley, the current CEO. The $18,000 Advent Offering gift was the largest from FUMCR since 2013. The generosity of our congregation will touch thousands of kids and families across Texas and the DFW area. Our church, staff, and congregation are amazing in their service for Christ. Thank you!

FUMCR continues to impact the lives of those in our community through Network of Community Ministries. Our congregation generously contributed $101,843.93 in 2021, and 53 volunteers from FUMCR gave 2,316 hours to the food pantry, clothing closet, and Toyland Express. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of others.
