Our worship sermon series for Lent this year will focus on the seven last words of Christ. Pastor Chris approached me with the idea of preaching on the seven last words and wondered if the choir could do a musical setting of it for our Good Friday service. I thought it was a great idea and knew of several options that are in the choral/orchestral repertory.
I chose Michael John Trotta’s setting because I think it is very approachable to both the singer and the listener. The piece has themes that you will hear throughout that refer back to the first movement, “Father, Forgive Them,” and the piece builds upon that theme all the way up to the final movement, “It Is Finished.”
It’s going to be a very exciting season in our church to have all of the sermons and themes of Lent focus on these seven last words and have it culminate with this great musical representation of the text.
