Customizing Your Ride

W

hat could be better than riding a motorcycle? Not much, really! Except riding a motorcycle that is completely customized to you. That is the best way to ride. Customization serves many purposes: comfort, speed and style. All of these things combine to make your ride 100% you. Comfort is the biggest reason an rider customizes their bike. When you first purchase your bike, you more often than not get it fresh off the showroom floor stock and clean as the day it was born. Now what? After riding it around for a while you may start to realize that it may not suit your body and riding style. Never fear! This is actually a rather easy fix in most cases. This begins the process of motorcycle ownership that is second only in fun to actually riding! You get to work with your local shop to create a bike that is fitted to you. If the problem is that your slouching over too far in the seat, the fix can be as simple as new bars that help shorten or raise your reach. If your tailbone is sore after an afternoon of riding, the solution might be a more plush seat with a back rest. If the ride is chilly, we can add heated hand grips. You bring a problem to our table, we are going to come up with a solution. Back to that fresh-off-the-floor bike... it packs a punch, but you start to wonder, “Could this bike be more powerful?” The answer is, “Why it might just be possible!” Depending on the motor you have in your machine, it can be upgraded to give you a monstrous powerhouse. With Harley-Davidson motorcycles, most engines have options for Stage upgrades. You can also upgrade your intake, exhaust system and even your wiring to make the most of your bike. There are a vast combination of upgrades that you can make, and a specialist can help you find the perfect one for your dream bike! Sometimes you just want your bike to look a certain way. There are so many ways to change the appearance of your bike, from simple changes like a pipe swap or a new windshield to a big overhaul like a paint swap or bobbing your bike out. The look of your bike is almost only limited by your imagination. Often comfort and power play a major part in your bike’s appearance, and you can add to it from there. Once you have swapped your bars and gotten a new exhaust system, you may find that you will want new rims and tires to complete the look. The whole process is a partnership between you and your specialists. Here at Doc’s we will work with you every step of the way and will go to whatever lengths needed to get you the bike you have envisioned. You dream it,we build it! It’s that simple! www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

I can’t believe this year is sailing by so fast. We are already approaching 6 months into the year and there are events happening everywhere. Be sure to check out what’s happening on our Crusin’ Calendar. This year seems to be filled with even more events and rides than usual. I’m excited to say that one of my favorite yearly events is the Sturgis Rally and we are approaching the 60 days until Sturgis mark. I think this will be a good year for Sturgis and there will be a full house of riders. I love the event because there are so many great rides to take when you’re in the Black Hills. Love the new saying “Black Hills Matters”. If you have never been to Sturgis this would be a great year to mark that off your bucket list. If you’re a true biker or just an enthusiast you have to make Sturgis a part of your riding experience. We will be there in full swing and hope to see many of you there too. Another one of my favorite events is the Lake of The Ozark Bikefest. This event has continued to grow every year and proven to be Missouri’s largest Motorcycle Rally. Our friends at The Lodge of Four Seasons are offering special room rates for the biking community during Bikefest but there are limited rooms available, so get your reservations in early. The rally, this year, is starting on Wednesday, September 13th and running through Sunday September 17th. The Lake is a great place to ride or drive anytime, not just during Bikefest and The Lodge of Four Seasons is certainly the best place to stay. We would also like to mention anytime you’re at the Lake, make sure to stop in at TireBiters Peanut Bar for great food, drinks and overall a great time. Be sure to tell Tom that Full Throttle Magazine sent you. Two great bike nights that I want to remind everyone about are the Wednesday “Historic Route 66 Bike Night” at Bobby’s Place in Valley Park. This is every Weds night and has become the Biggest Weekly Bike Night in the Lou. This year we have lots going on every week from FREE BBQ to FREE Money, great Vendors and more. Another great Bike Night is every third Thursday, One Eyed Willie’s on Telegraph Road has a fun night with live music, vendors, great food and drink specials. Oh yeah, don’t forget the One Eyed Willie’s Girls. These are two Bike Nights that should be on everyone’s calendar. Hope to see everyone there at Bobby’s Place on Weds and One Eyed Willie’s every 3rd Thursday. As always my friends ride safe and see you on the road with Full Throttle Magazine. Bob

Never Give Up

“Don’t ever give up on your dreams; if you work hard enough your dreams can become a reality.” That is exactly what happened with Susan and Monty Saale, Owners of The West Alton Bar and Grill. They worked and worked hard, and NEVER gave up, until their dream of owning a bar became a reality.

Monty Saale is a third-generation farmer that was born and raised in West Alton. This community means everything to him and his wife. When Monty’s wife, Susan told him she wanted to pursue purchasing a bar in West Alton, and stay in the community he was raised in, he was ecstatic. He couldn’t have been more grateful. Susan Saale was the Assistant manager of the Boat House in Forest Park for five years. Before that, she ran other restaurants and bars and has a degree in culinary arts. So, she is no beginner to the bar and restaurant industry, and she can cook her butt off. Her dream has always been to own her own bar. She loves serving people and making them happy. Her dream finally became a reality in December of 2015. Susan and Monty started negotiations with the previous owners of the bar in November of 2015 and by December they had successfully purchased the bar. Susan and Monty thought of the name The West Alton Bar and Grill and loved it. They wanted to represent the community they lived in; putting West Alton on the map in a big way. Shortly after they purchased The West Alton Bar and Grill, was the horrible winter flooding of 2015. This was such a nightmare for them. The flooding put a quick halt to their grand opening, considering there was over a foot of water inside. Susan and Monty were devastated. But, with all the work they had put into getting here, a little water definitely wasn’t going to stop them. Well more like a lot of water! But anyway, after the flood waters finally receded, they began to fix all the problems it had caused. Repairing the patio, and many other renovations. Sitting on the patio watching the sunset is one of Susan’s favorite things to do. You will see some of the most amazing sunsets. Anyways, they now were ready for the big day! They were beyond excited that the grand opening was almost here. April 15, 2016 was the official grand opening of The West Alton Bar and Grill. Putting so much extra time and effort into quickly fixing everything the flooding had damaged, it was finally time to open their doors. The excitement was at an all-time high. After teaming up with Full Throttle Magazine, an amazing music promoter, and a few other strategic partners, the grand opening was a huge success.

On Your Dreams

Written By Andrew Blanton

Susan and Monty couldn’t have been happier and more grateful. They had been waiting for this day for a long time, and had worked so hard to get there. The West Alton Bar and Grill isn’t your average bar by any means. There are so many things they do that sets them apart from the rest, and above the rest; going way above and beyond normal expectations for a bar. Customer service is a main priority. They don’t want any of their customers having a bad experience. They also take great pride in their menu, using fresh produce and only the best ingredient’s, also supporting local farmers and small business owners. There menu by no means is your average bar menu. The food is always prepared fresh when you order and made with high quality ingredients. Also, having great live music to keep you entertained almost every weekend. They don’t settle for just any band either, they search for top bands who perform all across the United States. Susan and Monty work so hard day and night to make sure everything is perfect and every customer leaves with a big smile on their face. They host huge events and want The West Alton Bar and Grill to be more than just your average local bar. They see new customers every day and are very grateful for that. Like I said before, customer service is so important to the Saale’s. Truly caring for every customer that walks into their establishment will always make you feel welcome and comfortable at The West Alton Bar. Taking the time to really get to know their customers means the world to them. This isn’t like your corporate owned bars where the staff are like robots. The West Alton Bar has been a staple in their community since the 1950’s and that will not change now. If you have never visited The West Alton Bar and Grill you are truly missing out. You need to set aside sometime and make a trip there and see for yourself why they have nothing but amazing reviews. I can promise you will not be disappointed. Check out West Alton Bar’s Facebook page, give them a quick like, and stay up to date and all the great events, amazing food and drink specials, and the best live music. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

o…. we are not in Gotham, Batman has not arrived to town and Robin did not lay any eggs. But, what had arrived starting in the later part of 2014 with 2015 models is Polaris reinventing the wheel; three to be exact, “The SLINGSHOT”. Nowadays when you think of a three-wheeled motorcycle, you may think of your traditional trike with two wheel in the rear and the motor sitting underneath you. Or maybe in more recent years when Polaris came out with the Canam Spyder, with the two wheel in front. None the less, both of those styles of motorcycles were designed where you ride them by straddling the motor and having the acceleration in the palm of your hand. But still, even with the stability of three wheels instead of two, as it is appealing to most people that have that fear or the inability to ride your standard two wheels, it still wasn’t enough to push that wavering person over the edge. Polaris, I’m sure, was thinking like the Bicentennial Man…..This just won’t do! Polaris went back to the drawing board to figure out what they can create that will appeal to the rest of those wavering souls that really want to feel the acceleration underneath them but still have a sense of security. That’s when the “Slingshot” was born. Instead of sitting on top of the motor, you sit behind it. Instead of having your passenger sitting behind you, they sit beside you. Those are two fundamental differences. Other differences are the acceleration; instead of using your hands, this is where it’s just like a vehicle, it’s a 5-speed manual transmission with a steeling wheel, a gas pedal and a clutch and break pedal. In short, you drive it just like a car. But still, this wild and crazy means of transportation has only three wheels; two in the front and one in the rear. As I mentioned before each model has the driver and passenger sitting side by side in their waterproof bucket seats with three point seatbelts. The steering wheel tilts for added comfort as well as the Engine Airflow Management System. The Slingshot weigh approximately 1743 pounds and is powered by a 2.4 liter DOHC Engine. This engine derived from the GM Ecotec which was the engine that was formally used by GM in the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky. It also offers 173 HP with 166 ft.-lbs. of torque and has 2384 cc displacement with the 5-speed manual transmission. For the Drivers Aids is has Electric-Power-Assisted Steering, Electronic Stability & Traction Control & ABS Disc Brakes.

The lighting has Projector Beam Headlights & LED Taillights. And Lockable Storage Bins and Glove Box. All models have a Double-Wishbone Front Suspension with a Sway Bar to control the front end. With all the standard features that are offered, you have your choice of a few different models that offer upgrades. For example, the standard S model has 17-inch front wheels and a singular 18-inch wheel in the rear of the vehicle while the SL and the SL LE Editions have two 18 inch forged aluminum front wheels with a 2 inch in the rear. The SL & SL LE also offers a Clear Ripper Series Wind Deflector and Hood Accent Graphics. The cockpit has a media console with 4.3-inch LCD Screen, Backup Camera, Bluetooth Integration, Rockford Fosgate Audio System and Cut and Sew Seats The Top of the line SLR offers all the features of the SL plus added features: Under the hood: The SLR Branded Exhaust Manifold Cover and Open Air Intake Exterior: Two-Toned Paint with Colored Frame Accents, Full Body Graphics, Tinted Ripper Series Wind Deflector, 305mm Wide Rear Tire, Composite Brake Rotors The Cockpit: Cut and Sew Sports Seats, Sparco Steering Wheel, Shift Knob and Pedal Covers and Interior LED Lighting Kit. With the prices staring at $21,999, you have plenty of ways to pick your poison. The Slingshot not a “Automobile”. It does not have a roof, doors, side windows, airbags or a crumple zone. It does not meet automotive safety standards. However, in thirty-five states, it’s classified as an “Autocycle”. With this classification, you only need to have a valid drivers license to operate the Slingshot. You are not required to where a DOT helmet. Missouri is one of those fifteen remaining state that classify the Slingshot as a Motorcycle and by law you are required to wear a DOT approved helmet and have a valid motorcycle endorsement on your license. Here are a few of states across the Midwest and how they classify the Slingshot. Arkansas – Motorcycle Illinois – Autocycle Kansas – Autocycle Iowa – Autocycle

Page 23

www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

Hawaii is the only state that has yet to classify the Slingshot. To find out the other states classifications, go to www.polaris.com, click on the Slingshot tab and under the Shopping Tools dropdown, click on license requirements. Polaris recommends that no matter how the Slingshot is classified from state to state, that you wear a DOT approved full face helmet and the seatbelts. Now that I’ve gotten all the technical information out of the way I can get to that burning question…..”How does it ride?” Our Friends at MUNGENAST MOTORSPORTS, who have a vast wealth of knowledge regarding the Slingshot, let us take one out for the afternoon to see what all the hype was about. And I here to tell you that I’ve never driven anything like it before. Yes, it drives like a car, yet it feels different. The power and acceleration you have is exhilarating. The shifting is super smooth, the cornering is tight and because you have one wheel in the back instead of two the “donut” action is wicked short. Not to mentions, you just look plain BAD ASS driving this awesome piece of mechanics down the road. If you want to take the opportunity to own one of these head turning, eye googling, pieces of machinery without breaking the bank, go see our friends at Mungenast Motorsports on South Lindbergh just South Tesson Ferry, close to hwy 55. You won’t be disappointed.

elcome back Full Throttle readers and riders! What a soggy couple of months it’s been! Now that the rain has stopped and the flood waters have receded, the bikes and back roads are back in business. I think it’s safe to say that most of you will agree that there is no better sound than an American V-twin firing up and clipping through the gears while heading down a winding road. I mean that’s one of the main reasons why we buy our beloved Harley-Davidsons for that deep rich tone, and the pipes are the first thing to go in the first 10 minutes of ownership. For those of you who have recently purchased a new Milwaukee eight finding the right pipes has proven to be difficult until recently as the aftermarket industry was still rushing to catch up to all the amazing changes that were made to the 2017 touring power plant while the options from Harley left some customers wanting more sound. So let us start off by talking about what the Motor Company has to offer for your new Mil 8 platform. The Screaming Eagle line offers some great air cleaners like the very functional and traditional high flow kit to the aggressive and stylistic heavy breather. When paired up with the Harley street tuner and some Screaming Eagle mufflers with optional end caps this stage one offers substantial power gains from factory. Now in this situation the stock header stays in place as Harley is looking to stay compliant with EPA regulations. With the recent redesign of the header system the factory was smart to move the catalytic converter further back and increased the size to help dissipate some of the heat buildup caused by the catalytic converter. This is where some of the new aftermarket exhaust systems come into play. As the months dragged on after the Mil 8 release we were promised day after day, week after week turning into months after months to see a full set of pipes from companies like Cobra, Rinehart, RC Components, and even Vance and Hines. Everyone was racing to put out the best pipe. As I spoke with more and more reps they were baffled, pun intended. As we all know in the past putting a set of pipes on the bike when done properly we can see some substantial gains of up to 10% or more. This time around was not the case. Turns out Harley had these new motors pretty dialed in from the factory and unless you change the cam and displacement it’s hard to get some power out of a

simple stage one. Don’t get me wrong we still see some improvement to power but not like we used to. So at this point we are really just looking for the right tone and a good looking pipe to complement our bike! As of today all the major companies are offering full header systems as well as some 2 into 1 systems. Here at St Charles Harley we strive to bring you products that are made right here in the United States of America and secondly I look for a company to have my back as much as I have yours so we really study the warranty coverage to protect our customers. And no company is better at doing that in my opinion than Cobra. For the 2017 Bagger models, they modified their famous Cobra PowerPort by enlarging it to become a pulse chamber that accelerates exhaust scavenging to produce the kind of power riders expect. Even its cherry bomb shape, bulging from between the heat shields gives a clue to the real power potential it offers when paired with anything from their affordable Neighbor Haters to the beefy tone of the Race Pro mufflers! Rinehart racing has been a great name in the industry for many years and they also offer a great Slime Line header that compliments their full range of mufflers. Rineharts headers much like Cobra have a “power port” or “Cross over” chamber to help build as much power as possible. They also carry a limited warranty to help protect the customer from defects and produce their product in Wisconsin. If you are looking to make some noise with some loud style check out RC Components out of Bowling Green Kentucky. With over sixty different muffler and end cap combos to choose from you will be able to find the style that suites you and your bikes needs! Finishing off any one of these set ups with a fuel management like a Street Tuner, a Vance and Hines fuel pak 3, or even dialing in a dyno tune with Power Commanders power visions will really benefit and complete your stage. There really are way too many companies and options to list in one article so I encourage you to come on in and see our parts professionals at St Charles Harley-Davidson to assist you with your performance needs. Until then thanks for stopping by and yall enjoy the ride!

The “New” Steet Rod

ow’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Hope you enjoy this article and looking forward to many more! The weather has brought some rain to the area but over all its been a great start to the riding season. Bike nights have had to be rescheduled but once the rain stopped they have been a huge hit. Thank you all that have come out and enjoyed them. Looking forward to this riding season and may it be the best one for you all as well. This month I’m going to talk about one of the newest motorcycles that Harley-Davidson has introduced. This is the all New Harley-Davidson Street Rod! Harley came out in 2015 with the 500 & 750 Street models. At first I was unsure on the style and ride of this new model. That was until this year when the “Street Rod” made its appearance. This bike looks and feels completely different from the basic models and the ride will prove that to you. This bike was built for the Urban lifestyle and ready to hit all the streets with the rider in mind. With a seat height just over 30” getting into some curvy roads will show you just how great this new Harley-Davidson is. You get three great color options available in Vivid Black, Charcoal Denim (which is my favorite) & Olive gold. The heart of the bike and what gives you the ability to split thru traffic and accelerate from stop light to stop light or to the next curve in the road is the all new High Output Revolution X engine. This motor red lines at an amazing 9,000 rpm so don’t hesitate to open it up and see what it really has to offer! The drag bars and moving the forward controls back a few inches really gives you the right riding position. Also one of the biggest performance upgrades is the front and rear suspension. The front is now equipped with an aggressive 43mm inverted front end. As for the back you have some amazing piggyback reservoir rear shocks. So with both these great upgrades to the Street Rod you can hit the corner and pull back to the straight away. Also be able to soak up all the wonderful pot holes we all try to avoid on the back roads and city streets as well. All I have to say is what a great improvement from the basic street models and looking forward to whats in the future for this new model release from Harley-Davidson motor company. Come in and check out this all new model release from Harley-Davidson. Also hope to see you at bike night June 1st as we will have the Wall of Death here again. We will also have the Wall of Death the 2nd and 3rd along with some of the biggest aftermarket vendors here to show off the latest new product. Thanks again for taking the time to read this and please come into St. Charles Harley-Davidson and ask for me, Zach White or give me a call @ 636-946-6487 and also by email, zach@stcharlesharleydavidson.com to set up a consultation! I’m here to make all your Harley-Davidson dreams come true.
