Motorcycles and the MILITARY With Memorial Day around the corner, we find ourselves reflecting on the Military history of our
great nation. Through it all, we fight and persevere. Harley-Davidson has been honored to be a part of this history, even if just to assist our heroes. May we never forget those who have defended us. The first official order of Harley-Davidson motorcycles was in 1916 for General “Black Jack” Pershing during the US/Mexican border conflict. Pershing felt that all new tech was going to give the US an edge, and the agility and ease of use of the H-D bikes was a major asset. This new venture led to a decadeslong partnership. During World War I, one half of Harley-Davidson’s production went to the military. Many types of new models were developed to suit the needs of the soldiers on the front lines. Harley-Davidson supplied the US and her Allies with bikes, including the WLA, a Navy-specific model adapted from the Model U, which was built for Shore Patrol. Almost 70,000 WLA bikes were produced! Harley-Davidson created the Quartermasters School exclusively for training military mechanics on H-D motorcycles in 1917. After the war, this would eventually become the Service School. Corporal Roy Holtz of Wisconsin was made famous for being the first American to enter Germany, only a day after the Armistice was signed. This historic moment was captured in a photo, which shows he was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Harleys were so well known for being a part of the Allied forces that the units that led the convoys into liberated cities throughout Europe became known as “Liberators.” World War II began in September of 1939, but the United States joined the fray in the final weeks of 1941. This brought Harley-Davidson back into their partnership with the US Military. Production focus pivoted to Military needs, nearly halting civilian production completely. The Service School reverted back to the Quartermasters School and resumed the training of military mechanics. In 1942, Harley-Davidson was the recipient of an Army-Navy “E” Award for “excellence in wartime production.” This would be the first of four “E” Awards that they would receive. World War II was the first time many servicemen encountered a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and the CONTINUE ON PAGE 5

experience stayed with them upon their return stateside. Nearly 60,000 WLA models were created for the war effort during World War II, meaning many soldiers experienced the ride first-hand. This relationship developed into a special bond that Harley-Davidson and Military personnel maintain to this day. The Vietnam War saw the decline of motorcycles used in the arena of battle. The advances in technology depleted the need for them in the battlefield, even in reconnaissance where they were used so often in wars past. This did not stop the relationship between members of the Military and Harley-Davidson, however. The practice that took hold during World War II of soldiers returning to war and purchasing their own Harley grew with time. Many Vietnam veterans actively participate in riding groups that support charities and organizations, including providing a motorcycle escort for fallen soldiers and first responders. Harley-Davidson is dedicated to those who serve this great country. We are lucky to have veterans and current Military personnel riding in our ranks to this day. They are a major part of the Harley-Davidson family and we thank them for all that they have done and continue to do to for our country.

DIRRTY CUST
Anthony Brown, Owner of Dirrty Custom Baggers, has a special talent that not a lot of people have. He is truly a master at his craft; a true motorcycle builder who has built motorcycles that one can only dream. This type of talent is more of an art form and nothing like what you might see at a typical motorcycle dealership. When you look at some of his builds, you will understand why he has so many first-place trophies at his shop from some of the biggest and well-respected shows out there. From the wheels and tires, to the paint and bags, to the amazing custom built and tuned stereo systems, his finished products leave you in awe.
Anthony has been a mechanic pretty much his whole life and has always had a love for motorcycles. His love wasn’t just for riding motorcycles though, his love was also for building and working on them. Right out of high school, Anthony started working for firestone changing tires and oil and little things like that while he attended school to be a certified mechanic. Shortly after graduating Rankin school for mechanics he got offered a position at General Motors. Twenty-five years later he is still there and closing in on his retirement all the while running his own successful business. It is just insane how hard Anthony works and the dedication he has to his customers and making sure they are happy. Think about working two full time jobs well over 80 hours a week. That’s exactly what he does. He is at his shop during the days and on the weekends. When your second job is owning a business doing what you love to do and are so passionate about, it isn’t so bad. It is still a lot of work and dedication. Anthony and his team specialize in custom bagger builds as well as custom aftermarket sound systems. They don’t just install your sound system and send you back on the road, they also do a lot fine tuning of that system. Which if you are at all familiar with this, then you know how hard and tedious of a job that can be. Not only are they after volume, but clarity. It must be clear, crisp and sound good. But that is not all they do. If you just need an oil change, they have you covered. If you had a sound system installed somewhere else and don’t think it sounds right, if a speaker is blown, you need a new bigger battery or another battery added, they have you covered. They

TOM BAGGERS also have all the equipment in house to change and install new tires and rims whether you have a regular size tire or a 32 inch, they have you covered. If you need anything done and have any questions, just call the shop and talk to Shante. She is honest and straight forward and will take care of you. Let me give you a quick introduction to the staff that helps make DCB tick. There’s Shante; the office manager. She is amazing to work with and if you have any questions about anything just give her a call. She will go out of her way to help you. Kendra his wife, helps with pretty much everything around the office as well as helping Anthony a little in the shop. She doesn’t mind getting her hands a little dirty!!!! Next is Anthony’s very good friend and expert welder Brian Wallace. Sadly, Brian was recently in a motorcycle accident that took his life. This has really hit Anthony and the whole DCB family hard. Brian was a great guy and was like a brother to Anthony. If they ever needed any help around the shop or any welding projects done, Brian was the man to do it. He also just started teaching Anthony the ropes on welding; which is something Anthony has always wanted to learn. Anthony and the DCB team have Brian’s welding mask and have plans to make a plaque/memorial to hang on the wall at the shop to show their respect and gratitude for everything he has done and to remember what a great friendship they had. Brian he was a great man will be missed very much. That is why he fit right in at Dirrty Custom Baggers and became such a good friend and brother. All the employees at DCB really are amazing and so helpful. Anthony kept emphasizing how none of this could even be possible without his staff and all his customers. He wouldn’t be where he is without them. He is so grateful and honored to have them.
Anthony and the Dirrty Custom Bagger team are some of the most talented yet humble and down to earth people I have had the honor of meeting and talking with. They truly make you feel welcome when you are there, and you just feel like you are part of the family. You will never catch them bragging and boasting about their builds even though they are some of the best out there. If you have any thought of having a bagger built, new rims and tires or a stereo system installed I highly recommend you give Dirrty Custom Baggers a call. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

Written By Zach White
“Gone But
H
ow’s it going Full Throttle readers? Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. I hope everyone is enjoying a nice Spring and gearing up for the open road. April brought us some warm days, lots of showers, and an almost freezing weekend with spots of snow in some areas. Make sure to check your tire pressure as the temperatures change from day to day. We are looking forward to seeing you all at the dealership, as the weather is finally here to stay and the riding season is in full force. With that in mind, please look twice, as some people are not used to having motorcycles back on the road. If you’ve come to the shop recently, you might’ve noticed that we are missing a very important part of our St. Charles Harley-Davidson family, John “Jack” Joseph Dugas. Jack took his last breath on February 23rd, 2019 with his loved ones by his side. He had a freak accident while out enjoying some live music, which was one of his favorite pastimes. He is missed dearly. Jack was born on August 24th, 1958 in Mexico, Maine. After graduating high school, he joined the NAVY and served for 4 years. This is where he met his wife, Caroline. He brought her from Australia to the United States, and they got married in 1983. A couple years later they welcomed their daughter, Danielle. Jack worked at HQ Home Quarters in Maine, where he met one of his best friends, Richard. Richard is the reason for his move to the St. Louis area in 1997. Richard had the opportunity to build his own team at Home Depot, and Jack was the first one he called. After Home Depot, Jack began working at Gateway Harley-Davidson around 2006. This was the start of his Harley-Davidson career. He started at St. Charles HarleyDavidson in 2010 and quickly became a go-to for many in the Parts Department. You could always find Jack at the counter telling a new joke, and bringing a smile to everyone that walked in. I met Jack in 2015, when I started working at St. Charles HarleyDavidson. From the beginning, Jack and I hit it off. He had a love for Page 32

Not Forgotten” music and Harleys, which are two of my favorite things. He taught me so much about both. He would have a live show playing on his computer every morning. When I walked in, he’d call out, “Hey Zach, come check out this show.” It would always lead to a story and some kind of music trivia. Jack had a fascinating index in his brain. He was one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve met. I want to thank everyone that made it out to the Dealership April 7th for the Celebration of Life for Jack. We had almost 100 motorcycles take a 65-mile ride in Jack’s memory. It was a beautiful day, and the weather couldn’t have been better. After the ride, we returned to the dealership to share stories of Jack’s life. We did what we knew Jack would want us to: laughed and listened to great music. It was good to see so many of Jack’s loved ones, from the Home Depot days, to his recent Harley years. I know he was hollering with a smile, as his spirit was with us on that sunny afternoon. Thank you to all who helped make this happen. We love and miss you, Jack! This month at the dealership it starts with our first Bike Night on May 2nd. Let’s hope for nice weather, as April wasn’t on our side. May 11th will be our Pre-Owned Inventory Clearance event, which was also rescheduled due to those wonderful April showers. Our St. Charles H.O.G. Group started a new ride this year. It’s the second Wednesday of the month and it’s called the “Life Is Good” ride. They meet at the dealership in the morning around 8:45 am, take a ride, and eat some lunch. This is a great event for retired riders, but all are welcome. If you have the motorcycle blues and need a day off work, come check it out. Be sure to check out our Facebook page and Website to stay up-to-date on upcoming events, new product, & the latest info from Harley-Davidson. Thanks again for taking the time to read this. If you come to St. Charles Harley-Davidson, be sure to ask for me, Zach White. CRACK UP’S The Queen takes the visiting pope for a ride in a carriage through London. Suddenly one of the horses farts very loudly. “I am terribly sorry,” apologizes the embarrassed Queen. The pope replies, “Oh don’t worry, if you hadn’t said anything, I’d just think it was the horse!” ______________________ Jesus can walk on water, correct? (Yes) Well, I can walk on cucumbers. As you may know, cucumbers are 98% water. So - I am 98% Jesus. _____________________ An almost hysterical man calls 911 and yells, “Please come quickly! Kailey is pregnant and her labor started now, it’s really intense!” “Is this her first child?” asks the operator. “No you dumbass! It’s her husband!” _____________________ Why were the Stars Wars released in the sequence of 4,5,6,1,2,3? Because they were directed by Yoda _____________________ Girl: “I’m sick and tired of you pretending to be some detective ace all the time. I think we should split up.” - Me: “Excellent idea. That way we can cover more ground.” _____________________ A five-year-old Mikey asks his Grandpa, “Grandpa, what do you call it when there are two people on top of each other in bed?” - The Grandpa feels very uncomfortable but decides not to confuse the child and bravely says, “That’s intercourse, my boy.” - “OK,” nods Mikey and off he goes. - He comes back after five minutes and says, “Grandpa, that’s not right. I’ve just spoken to mom and she said that it’s not called intercourse but a bunk bed!” ______________________

The person who thought it’s a good idea to put the light switch outside of the bathroom clearly didn’t have any siblings. ______________________ My wife left me, went away. At first I was sad, lonely and didn’t know what to do with myself. But I bought a motorbike, threw a wild, loud party and got to meet some other women. I think my wife may not be so pleased when she comes back again from work. ______________________ A police officer stops a car and says: “Congratulations, sir! You are the 1,000,000th car to drive over this bridge – you win $10,000! What will you do with that money?” The driver gets very emotional and says, “First of all, I’ll finally make my driver’s license!” The wife cuts in, “Don’t listen to him, officer, he’s still drunk!” A hard-of-hearing granny from the back seat grumbles, “I knew we shouldn’t have taken the stolen car!” A voice from the trunk adds, “Hey, are we past the border now?” _____________________ A woman looking for a relationship places an ad, saying, “Looking for a guy that won’t beat me, won’t run away on me and will satisfy me nicely. Am good looking, excellent cook.” Three days later, there’s a loud knocking at her door. Behind it there’s a guy with no arms and no legs, smiling expectantly. “Dear Amy,” he says, “I have no arms so I couldn’t even beat you if I tried. I have no legs and I can’t run away on you. I’m your guy.” “That’s very nice,” says Amy, surprised, “but how will you be able to satisfy me?” His smile widens, “You did hear the knocking, didn’t you?” _____________________ You stole my Microsoft Office and for that you’re going to pay. - You have my Word!

HEMI-ROID so, most of you know the saying “Does That Thing Have A Hemi
In It?”And yes, today’s Hemi’s have come a long way and some are even faster. But, none have the same sound, feel or POWER as a “REAL HEMI”. In the Real Gear Head world, Hemi is simple referred to as is “The ELEPHANT”. We all love loud music and the sound of the bass kicking, but there is NO better sound than the music of a real Hemi, especially when it is blown and Injected. The true definition of a Ground Pounder !!! Now that we know what I feel is the best sound in the world, let’s take a look at another beast; Butch Hill’s 1953 Studebaker. I know a lot of you Gear Heads may have seen this one before since it is a local car and it is also known World Wide as the “Worlds Quickest ALL-STEEL ’53 Studebaker. It has been in the Hill-Boys family since 1961, and the story how it all began is an interesting one. It all began over a game of horse shoes. Don Hill bought this ’53 as a parts car for street car he already owned so Don took off everything he needed making it nothing but a shell with no plans. In 1963 the Hill family was having a get together and Jack Hill and his brother Don was playing horse shoes and the bet was ON. Jack bet that if he threw the next horseshoe as a ringer, Don would have to sell Jack the Stude parts car to him for $25.00. I’ll give you one guess on how that wager turned out. Twenty-five bucks and the keys to that Stude were exchanged. Don & Jack always had racing in their blood, they were well known coast to coast after WWll on the dirt tracks and then also on the asphalt tracks as the Hill-Boys from the Midwest. But now being 1963 the Hill-Boys Racing Team was no longer racing open wheel cars, they were playing Page 40

in the Straight Lane game. Jack decided it was time to start on his new purchase and he put in the 392 HEMI Elephant with 2-4 barrels, a 727 Torque Flight into the stock chassis with custom headers, an OLD’s rear end, ladder bars & a 4 point cage. The beast was ready for the 1964 racing season. After a short race season, work had to be top priority so the car just sat around until 1972 when Jack gave his son Mike Hill the car for his 16th birthday. A few years past and in 1979 Don’s son Butch Hill and Mike decided to become partners/owners in this Studebaker. In the 80’s during a race out at MAR Raceway, the Studebaker was having troubles making real horsepower but strangely enough Don Garlits was at the track that day. Some of you may have heard of him, yep BIG DADDY Don Gartlis. Swamp Rat Well Big Daddy took a liking to the car and he came over and taught the Hill-Boys all of the tricks needed to make a HEMI perform like it should. In 1990 Butch decided to build a ’39 Ford to race against the Stude so he sold his interest back to Mike. In 1994 Mike and Butch willed their cars to each other so they would always be in the Hill families In 1995 the Golden Hawk fins were added to the car. The new paint scheme that you see today was added in 1997. 2006 was a good year since it won DuPont’s paint job of the year. The family that raced together, stay, together. Sadly, Cancer ultimately took the lives of both Jack and Mike and a stroke took the life of Don. I’m sure they all still look down on Butch Hill racing the car in NDRL Racing League. To be sure this car stays Hills-Boys Racing Butch has already willed it to his son, Cameron Hill. The car as it is today is still All-STEEL weighing in at 3200lbs with its 392 HEMI, all Aluminum Donovan motor from the ‘60s with a 671 blower with a 4 port Hilborn alcohol injection. Still with a 727 Torqueflight, Ford 9” with 4.10 gears, and the Original ladder bars they built in 1963. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
