IMPACT REPORT

SPOTLIGHT ON SUMMER During the summer of 2023, multiple crises converged that necessitated the largest single investment to date in our Summer Grantmaking.

Due to the roll back of USDA waivers, the increasing costs of food, and the influx of asylum seekers, we decided to tap our reserves and award $495,635 to support getting meals to kids and families throughout the summer.

We focused our grants on programs responsible for directly serving meals, implementing innovative solutions to the various restrictions imposed by the federal nutrition programs, and on getting the word out to families and kids through marketing about summer meals.

Thanks to School Meals for All, Maine kids eat breakfast and lunch at school for free. But school meals only account for 360 of the 1095 meals that a child needs throughout the course of a year.

Summer is a hungry time, and it shouldn’t be. That’s why we are setting our sights on fixing Summer Meals as our next big project.
