Fulbright Canada 2020 Virtual Orientation | September 10, 2020

This year, the Fulbright Canada Orientation took place online, bringing together all of our grantees, scholars, graduate students, and Killam fellows.

The September 10 session gave grantees from the 2020-2021 cohort the opportunity to meet and engage with the Fulbright Canada staff, board members, government partners, and each other. Special speakers included Marie Royce, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs; Heather Nauert, Member, Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board; Emmanuel Kamarianakis, Director General, International Business Development Investment and Innovation, Global Affairs Canada; and Stacy White, Minister Counselor for Public Affairs, Embassy of the United States of America in Canada.

Fulbright Canada post-COVID Challenge Launch: Youth Voices, Unque Ideas | October 15, 2020

The post-COVID Challenge was launched with a virtual panel featuring five exceptional young people who are leaders in their communities. The panel was led by Fulbright Canada Board member Ajay Royan and moderated by Fulbright Canada CEO Dr. Michael Hawes. Panellists included: Kevin Hayes, a graduate student at the University of Memphis pursuing a Master’s in Political Science; Lupita Martinez, a 2nd-year law student at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis; Israel Ozonwanji, a fourthyear undergraduate Global and International Studies student at Carleton University; Athanasia Tampakis, a recent Bachelor of Arts in Law graduate of Carleton University; and, Lily Wolderufael a second-year international graduate student pursuing a Master’s in Law and Legal Studies at Carleton Universities.

Killam Fellowships Alumna Elizabeth Dubois receives the 2020 Arts Early Researcher of the Year Award

Dr. Elizabeth Dubois, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa, has been awarded the Faculty of Arts’ 2020 Early Researcher of the Year Award.

Dubois was a 2015-2016 Killam Fellow and currently serves on the Fulbright Canada Alumni Advisory Committee.

The Black Experience in Canada & the U.S | February 24, 2021

Dr. Debra Thompson, Associate Professor, and Canada Research Chair in Racial Inequality in Democratic Societies at McGill University provided her perspectives on the Black experience in Canada and the U.S.in a conversation with Canadian Consul General Rana Sarkar. This digital speaking event was jointly hosted with the Canadian Consulate for Northern California and Hawai’i. Watch the recording here.

A World in Transition: Facing Global Challenges Sustainability Lessons from the Arctic | January 14, 2021

Led by co-lead scholars of the third iteration of the Arctic Initative, Dr. Greg Poelzer, Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, and Dr. Elizabeth Rink, Professor at Montana State University, the talk offered insights into what life in the Arctic can teach us as we battle a pandemic and work to create a sustainable future. Critical

innovations from the Arctic can help us address sustainability in a world in transition. Elizabeth Rink and Greg Poelzer shared their perspectives on how models in the Arctic may provide pathways for other parts of the world in energy, health, and security. Watch the recording here.
