TORIICHI

Toriichi specializes in coursestyle yakitori. It’s counter-only with the owner Ippei Matsunaga stoically standing behind a small binchotan charcoal grill. He starts his day carefully preparing 22 different kinds of skewers from fresh chicken. Start with a set of five or seven skewers; let the owner know if there is something you don’t like. The lightly salted skewers are delicious as is, but you can also spice them up with shichimi spices. Finish off your meal with a bowl of chicken noodle soup or a mini soboro-don (ground chicken on rice). Natural wines, sake and shochu are on offer too.

토리이치

작년 11월 오픈한 토리이치는 야키토리를 코스로 제공하는 전문점이다. 신선함을 위해 당일 아침에 잡은 닭을 점심쯤에 22개 부위로 나눠 장만한 뒤 숯불로 하나하나 정성껏 구워내는데 이때 사용하는 재료는 닭고기와 채소뿐. 꼬치에 꿰기만 하면 무엇이든 야키토리라 부르는 후쿠오카 스타일과는 다른 점이다. 자리를 안내받으면 야키토리 개수를 선택해야 하는데(5개 또는 7개) 기본 메뉴부터 희소부위까지 다양하게 즐기고 싶다면 7개짜리 코스를 추천한다. 닭고기 스프나 9월부터 새로 등장할 미니 사이즈 소보로 덮밥으로 코스를 마무리하자.

以套餐的型式品嘗烤雞肉串的專門店「鳥一」。曾在烤雞肉串名店磨練過手藝，去年 11 月自行開業，追求食材新鮮的店長松永一平先生，每天將現宰的肉雞分切成 22 個部位，然後細心對各部位做事先調理。招牌菜是雞柳加上山葵和 100% 特製雞肉丸子；您可以選擇是要 5 串或是 7 串，如果想到吃珍稀部位的話，那就特別推薦 7 串套餐；最後以雞湯或 9 月新登場的迷你雞肉燥丼來做結尾，就是一頓讓人滿足的料理。

EMI UDON

In business for more than 50 years, Emi Udon is run by Satoru Ichinomiya. After graduating high school, he went to train in Kagawa, Japan’s most famous prefecture for udon, so he could take over his aunt’s shop. Always curious, Ichinomiya makes his trademark thin, flat noodles by hand every day. In true Hakata style, he aims to serve his udon quickly. After much experimentation, he found that thin noodles could be boiled quicker, but he had to keep them flat to ensure they kept their integrity. The mellow soup, which uses his aunt’s recipe, is made from Hokkaido kelp, dried red-eye herring and dried mackerel. His menu features the Hakata standard goboten (burdock root tempura) udon as well as a many originals like tori oroshi udon, a dipping udon served with a hot chicken broth. There is also an a la carte menu for evening patrons who’d like to imbibe while relaxing to the sounds of jazz on the shop’s stereo.

For a spectacular view of the brilliant blue Genkai Sea and the green fields surrounding the rocky outcrop of Keya no Oto, try the hike up Mt. Tateishi. There are two places from which to start, but relax, both climbs are easy peasy and a pair of sturdy sneakers is all you’ll need. From the trailhead at Keya Beach, it’s about 30 minutes to the top. If you have a car, you can start off from the highest point along the mountain road linking Keya to Fukunoura. There’s a telecommunications tower and room for a few cars. From there it’s less than 20 minutes to the summit at 220 m where the view is stunning! If you go, don’t litter and prevent forest fires by not smoking. The beautifully illuminated paper lanterns symbolize prayers for good health and the well-being of one’s family. On Oct. 20 between 6 pm and 9 pm, the shrines and temples in the Hakata area are lit in spectacular fashion by tens of thousands of lanterns, handmade by the local community. Discover art installations in the area too!

SUMIYOSHI SHRINE REITAISAI

will be held. Feel the excitement as elementary students battle it out to be the yokozuna (sumo grand champion) in the young men’s sumo tournament. Takes place at Sumiyoshi Shrine (Oct. 12 ~ 14). Oct. 12: young sumo wrestling competition 9:00~12:00, children’s procession 16:00~, Oct.13: yabusame (horseback archery) 11:30~.

Traditionally, tomyo lanterns are illuminated as votive offerings to the gods and Buddha, or at memorial services (供養). The Hakata Tomyo Watching festival started in 1994, inspired from a traditional ceremony called Sentomyo that is held at temples and shrines in Fukuoka in which 1,000 paper lanterns are lit up.

The festival is said to have begun as a way of thanking the Sumiyoshi gods for the legendary Empress Jingu’s safe return from Korea by holding sumo and archery matches. Children wearing Heian-era clothes march in a parade, and intense, traditional Japanese archer y while riding on horseback called yabusame
