¬ trains 철도 There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Subway”, and “JR”. The subway links the two city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Airport. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel outside Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima. 후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테츠 전철’ ‘지하철’ ‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타, 텐진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘ 니시테츠 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸, 가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나 신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.

How to ride 버스 타는 방법 ● Check the destination on the front and side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via the center doors. ● If paying cash, take a ticket as you board. If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the sensor, ticket not required. ● Bus stops and fees are displayed on the monitor next to a driver. The fee appears under the ticket number. ● Fees are displayed on the monitor above the driver. Match your ticket number to get your fee. ● Push the stop button to alert the driver that you want to get off at the next stop. ● Drop the fee and your ticket into the box next to the driver and get off from the front door. If you need change, drop cash into the box next to the driver. When you are using nimoca, wave your card above the sensor. ● 버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠 있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가 오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다 ● 현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에 정리권을 뽑는다. of restaurants that are all exactly the same, but Sushi-zanmai is different. The staff of each restaurant visit a local fish market every morning to personally select the best fish. Their Tenjin location is just minutes from Nagahama fish market, giving them access to the freshest locally caught fish. “The markets in Fukuoka are cheaper than those in Tokyo,” says manager Mr. Yoneyama, explaining how they are able to offer all of their sushi for 20-50% off the regular price. Salmon starts at just ¥50 per piece and lean tuna is only ¥67. They do great-value ¥500 lunch specials too! As well as the Tenjin restaurant, there are also Sushi-zanmais in Nakasu and Chihaya, all with menus in English, Chinese and Korean.

sk somebody to name a famous food from Fukuoka, and they’ll most likely reply “ramen”. These noodles in soup are certainly hugely popular here, but this month we showcase a restaurant that adds a little ethnic twist to this most Fukuokan of dishes. The creatively-named Ramen Kamen 55 was set up by the people behind the well-established Sri Lankan restaurants Tunapaha and Nuwara Eliya. The

stylish interior sets them apart from other ramen shops as does their unique menu. Their biggest draw is the aforementioned “ethnic ramen”, which uses the Sri Lankan dish Kiri hodi in place of the regular ramen soup. This chicken broth includes creamy coconut milk and 10 different spices, which are only added after an order is received to make sure the taste is just right every time. Other popular choices are the spicy “panic ramen” with shrimp and lots of homemade chili oil, the “salad ramen” topped with plenty of raw vegetables, and the “ethnic” dipping noodles. The ramen lunch set, which includes rice and one side dish, is served each day until 17:00. If you’ve still got room after all of that, we also recommend the spicy deep-fried fish and steamed chicken salad!

Each has a distinguished history and is loved by locals. On December 31, some shrines hold two big ceremonies: Oharaishiki, to purify sins and evils, and jyoyasai, to give thanks for the previous year’s safety and to pray for peace in the coming year. The premier shrine of Hakata is called “Kushida-san” and is loved by locals. Access: 5 min. It was first constructed in 757. Hakata walk from Gion or Gion Yamakasa, a huge event held in the Nakasukawabata name of this shrine every July, is one of subway stations. the major festivals in Hakata. Tel: 092-291-2951 New Year Events: Oharai-shiki is held on Hours: 4:00 ~ 22:00 (all Dec. 31 at 16:00, jyoya-sai at 23:00. Since day on Jan 1 ~ 3) the shrine is said to grant prayers related to prosperity in business and perpetual youth, about 150,000 people visit between Jan. 1 ~ 3 every year. You can also enter a fukumikuji (paper fortune) raffle, usually sponsored by Hakata’s biggest companies, for ¥500.

하카타의 총진수로써 `오쿠시다상`이라는 이름으로 친숙한 신사. 그 기원은 757 년으로 되돌아간다. 그 신사에 매년 7월에 봉납되는 하카타 기온 야마카사는 하카타를 대표하는 제사의 하나로 전국에서 유명하다. 새해 정보: 12월 31일 16:00부터 대불식, 23:00 부터 제야제가 열린다. 사업 번창, 불로 장생 등, 새해 참배로 다수의 이익을 가지기 위해 매년 1~3일의 사흘간 약 15만명의 사람이 들린다. 하카타를 대표하는 기업에서 제공 하는 호화스러운 상품이 당첨되는 후쿠미꾸지는 500엔.

Gokoku Shrine was constructed in 1872. With 3,000 trees surrounding it, the Access: 5 min walk shrine is an oasis of calm, even though from Ohori Park. it’s located in the middle of a busy city. In front of Gokoku The torii, or gate, is made of cypress, Jinja-mae Nishitetsu stands 13-meters-high and is the symBus stop. bol of this shrine. At the Nanakusa Festival held on Jan. 7 from 10:00, you can sample nanakusa-gayu, a rice porridge containing seven seasonal vegetables. It is eaten for good health in the new year and costs just ¥100. The unique sight of female attendants cutting nanakusa to the sound of children singing is a must-see.

This shrine was moved to its present location next to Kego Park in 1608. The festival starts around 10:00 with hot zenzai (hot thick sweet soup made of red beans) available free of charge.

Enjoy Karuta Event

An important festive ritual of the new year holidays! Each year, Hakozakigu Shrine’s Tamaseseri festival sees two teams of loincloth-clad participants scrambling for possession of an 8kg wooden ball. Victory for the Beach Team is said to ensure plentiful fish for the year, while a Land Team victory brings a bountiful harvest.

The card game karuta was introduced by the Portuguese to the Chikugo region in 16th Century, before spreading throughout Japan. Experience old karuta whilst wearing classic Japanese attire, see an exhibition about karutathemed “Chihayafuru” and take part in workshops.

타마세세리

피리새ፚ바꾸기

피리새는 천신이 소유했던 새. 이 피리새 모양을 나무에 새긴 ‘나무 피리새’를 손에 들고 ‘바꿉시다 바꿉시다’라고 서로 부르며 교환하고, 한 해 동안 자신도 모르게 했던 거짓말과 꼭 해야만 했던 거짓말을 정산한다 는 의미를 가진 새해맞이 제사이다. 새 기분으로 이번 해를 보내기 위해 참가 해보는 것은 어떨까.

鬼夜 Oniyo Festival

Deemed an important intangible cultural property, this is one of Japan’s biggest and oldest fire festivals, with a 1,600-year history. Loincloth-clad youths carry 13m long pinewood torches inside the shrine. Being touched by falling sparks brings health and good fortune.

◊ Nanakuma Subway Line extension Fukuoka City plans to extend the city subway’s Nanakuma Line from the Tenjinminami Station through Canal City Hakata to the JR Hakata Station. The city’s Transport Bureau says it is a ten-year project: Three years for approval of national government subsidies and permission for launching railway services, railway construction and an environmental impact report, and another seven years for the construction work. It will improve access between Tenjin and Hakata and benefit both districts economically.

◊ yatai Survey results reported Fukuoka City convened a study group to examine the future approach to yatai (food stalls) in the city, which are declining in number. Fukuoka Now conducted a recognition survey of foreigners and received responses from 190. These results, along with those from a city survey of Fukuoka City residents, the minutes from the study group meetings and other materials can be viewed online. ◊ Center handles Consumer Complaints The Consumer Center handles consumer complaints about product purchases and contracts. People can discuss solutions to illegal business practices and defective

products. Visit or call on weekdays from 9:00 ~ 17:00. (Closed Dec. 29 ~ Jan. 3). Phone consultation is only available from 10:00 ~ 16:00 on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays (092781-0999). ◊ oshirasebai Fukuoka Service Launches The city has launched a digital signage program called “Oshirasebai Fukuoka” (meaning “Announcement from Fukuoka” in Hakata dialect) at over 360 commercial facilities and other sites throughout the city to provide messages and information to citizens in 15-second segments. Fifty local people will appear in the segments to send messages on

◊ Start the year with a health Checkup The city’s public health center will offer inexpensive medical exams. These include a one-day health checkup course that checks your blood, density of bone, body strength, and other items for ¥8,000 (for over 18 years old only, req. a reservation by phone, places limited). Medical staff explain your results on the same day. Ask the center for details on exams at 092-751-2806. Open 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays, the last Tuesday of the month, and year end and New Year holidays.
