The company is part of a global movement that promotes purpose-driven businesses, positive environmental impact, and strong commitment to communities. Providencia is the worldʼs only sugar mill certified as a B Corporation, an international distinction granted by B Lab to companies that meet high standards of environmental impact, social performance, transparency, and governance. More than 10,000 companies belong to this global movement—over 1,000 in Latin America and more than 120 in Colombia—but none in the sugar sector except Providencia.
A purpose-driven business model For Providencia, this certification validates a path of several decades integrating social, environmental, and economic dimensions into its operations. According to Angie Riascos, Sustainability Director, it confirms a management approach aligned with the care of people and the territory. Environmentally, Providencia has been a pioneer in agro-industrial sustainability.
Twenty-six years ago, Providencia began producing organic sugar—a crop free of agrochemicals that now supplies 18 countries. Its agricultural operation uses efficient irrigation systems—pivots, laterals, and drip irrigation—that reduce water use by up to 50%, and relies on a 100% mechanized harvest, eliminating cane burning and improving air quality. The Providencia Ecological Park reinforces this commitment. There, more than 303 bird species, around 30 water springs, and nearly 450 plant species are protected. Since 2016, over 373,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, contributing to the restoration of the Tropical Dry Forest and the High Andean Forest.
Social impact that transforms communities Social impact has been equally decisive in achieving the certification. Providencia invests in education, connectivity, and leadership development in rural areas of Valle del Cauca.

Providenciaʼs flagship project is Colegio Providencia, the largest social initiative in the sugar sector, which since 1961 has provided education from early childhood through technical and technological programs. In 2024, the company allocated more than 21 billion pesos in benefits for its over 3,000 employees and granted 130 university scholarships to workersʼ children. It has also transformed libraries in eight educational institutions, even converting former cane-transport railcars into learning spaces. These initiatives have benefited 1,070 students and more than 15,900 people, expanding access to technology, culture, and digital literacy. Programs such as Escuela de Líderes and Cultivando Talentos strengthen future-ready skills, critical thinking, and the creative use of free time among children and young people.
A path of continuous improvement The B Corporation certification adds to other recognitions, such as Bonsucro, which since 2019 has validated the sustainability of the entire production process for cane, sugar, and alcohol. For Sistema B, Providencia demonstrates that a business model capable of generating large-scale collective well-being and environmental regeneration is possible. The company continues to strengthen a triple-impact approach that integrates operational efficiency, ecosystem conservation, and community development. More than a distinction, being a B Corporation is, for Providencia, a way of doing business aligned with the challenges of the country and the planet.

Providencia received the Xposible Colsubsidio 2025 award in the Social Inequality Reduction category for its Colegio Providencia initiative.

Through Colegio Providencia, we positively impact the lives of more than 4,000 people, including employees, their children, and members of the surrounding community.
