EXECUT I VE LET T ER Hey, Fort Morgan! We have a new look! We present to you our new publication: Community Connection. While cleaning out some storage, we came across some old brochures for the City of Fort Morgan. That publication was titled Community Connection and detailed recreation programs and other news from the Community Services department. We decided to revive that publication, resulting in this new brochure! We hope you enjoy this quarterly publication to inform you of recreation programs and services offered! Winter is coming to a close and with it, some great programs. Youth basketball saw over 230 participants. Adult basketball and pickelball open gyms have seen great participation and drop in basketball has been abundant at the Armory (especially when schools were on winter break). Youth soccer will begin soon over at Jaycee and Riverside parks. As summer approaches, now is the time to dust off the old glove and start to think baseball/adult softball (page 9). And don’t forget to sign up for swim lessons (page 16-19). Those can fill up quickly!

The future of recreation looks awesome, Fort Morgan! We recommend you check out the upcoming projects on page 35. We have a lot to be excited about! Have a super spring! Steve Samson, Recreation Superintendent

Z ACC W I N N Zacc has been an exceptional employee his entire time here at the Recreation Department. He is a hard worker and always has amazing customer service. Zacc has many different responsibilities, but his ability to referee all of our sports has been a huge asset to our department. Parents and kids both have complimented Zacc while he has reffed because he is always willing to explain to kids what they are doing wrong or what they are doing right. Zacc was even willing to ref while he has been on crutches, which shows his dedication to his work. We want to thank Zacc for all of his hard work and congratulate him on being our Employee of the Quarter! 970.542.3921 | WWW.CITYOFFORTMORGAN.COM

FORT MORGAN YOUTH SPORTS POLICIES & RECREATION & INFORMATION

Spring 2020

YOUT H SPORTS POLICIES UNIFORMS/T-SHIRTS

INCLEMENT WEATHER

If a program fee includes a uniform for any specific program, sizes will be ordered based on size given. If the size given and ordered is not satisfactory, and was not the fault of the City of Fort Morgan Recreation Department, the individual will be responsible for paying for a different size.

If fields present an unsafe environment, we will postpone or cancel practices or games. Staff is instructed to err on the side of caution when determining inclement weather.

ONE REQUEST The Recreation Department strives to create fun and challenging opportunities for our youth. To maintain a fair playing field, we only permit one pairing request per individual. If both participants request each other to be on the same team, we will do our best to honor that request. We recommend this request system is used for individuals who may have limited transportation to practices and/or games. This request cannot be for a specific coach! Coaches will be able to coach their child(ren), but not request several friends. This is to avoid unbalanced or “stacked” teams. Please note that requests are not guarantees. We will do our best to honor such requests.

Call the Recreation Hotline for news on weather cancellation at (970) 542-3928.

PLAYING UP If the parent would like to consider their child playing up ONE age/grade level, please contact Kolby Wahlert at kolby.wahlert@cityoffortmorgan.com. Please allow one week to process and respond. Players are not allowed to play down an age/ grade level. Special circumstances will be considered. Please contact Kolby Wahlert at kolby.wahlert@cityoffortmorgan.com. Please allow one week to process and respond.

WAITING LIST Waiting lists are a source of contact and do not guarantee you will receive a call back. We will contact you if a space becomes available.

SPORTSMANSHIP

COMBINING AGE DIVSIONS

We strive to create memorable and positive experiences for our participants through our sports programs. We remind parents, coaches, players, and spectators that their actions, both positive and negative, have an impact on kids during these activities. Please be mindful to focus on the positive. Also acknowledge that our staff is prone to make the occasional mistake, as we all are. We are here for the kids! Let’s make sure they have fun playing these wonderful sports!

We reserve the right to combine age divisions for any programming dependent on the number of registrations.

8

AGE/GRADE DETERMINATIONS The age/grade at the start of the season determines the age/grade bracket for the program.

YOUTH SPORTS & RECREATION

All of the City of Fort Morgan’s youth sport leagues are run by volunteer coaches. This keeps the cost affordable for families so children can play and have fun. Even if you have no coaching experience, please apply! We have the necessary tools to help you provide a great experience for your team. We often do not have enough coaches which delays game schedules and affects the experience for the kids. As a coach, we ask you to focus on three teachings: teach them how to play the game, teach them excellent sportsmanship, and teach them to have fun! Applicants are subject to a background check and a simple concussion training course before coaching. As a perk, each successful season completed as a volunteer coach results in a $35 credit to your account which can be used for future recreation programs. If interested, please let the receptionist know when you are registering your child for a sport or contact us at (970) 542-3921.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

CI T Y OF FOR T MORGAN UPCOMING PROJEC TS GENE DOTY SENIOR CENTER

FORT MORGAN FIELDHOUSE

A new senior center is on the horizon, Fort Morgan! Due to the generosity of Gene Doty and his family, the City of Fort Morgan is currently constructing the Gene Doty Senior Center. The address for the facility is 307 Linda Street, right next to the Evans Early Childhood Center. This facility will house several great amenities including a common area, kitchen, pool room, card room, exercise room, patio, and a covered drop-off area at the entrance. The facility will be able to provide more programs for our senior community. The city also plans to use the facility for private party rentals during off hours. While we do not have an exact date for the grand opening, we are anticipating the facility to be in operation by the end of summer. Thanks Gene for your donation! We eagerly await the new facility! If you are interested in donating toward this facility, email us at SeniorCenterDonations@cityoffortmorgan.com or call (970) 542-3973.

With the Armory reaching its limitations and life cycle, City Council and staff are in the process of creating a new recreation facility for the community! This project includes high schoolsized basketball courts, lounge, weight/cardio room, indoor track, changing rooms, child watch, group exercise room, and more! The facility is slated to be built at the new CentrePointe Plaza development area at the corner of Beaver Avenue and Saunders Road. We are very excited for this new facility as it will be the host area for our indoor youth sports programs and provide more indoor recreation programming! If you have any questions abut the Fieldhouse project, please contact Steve Samson at (970) 542-3909 or steve.samson@cityoffortmorgan.com.
