Winter has arrived in Fort Lauderdale with its beautiful weather and lower temperatures, reminding us yet again that we live in a wonderful corner of the planet.

A lot has been happening in our community in recent months to improve our quality of life as well, and this issue of FTL Connect will highlight some of these accomplishments.

We recently celebrated the grand opening of The Fort, an incredible pickleball complex built completely with private funds in Snyder Park. This $30 million facility is unlike anything else in the country. Owned by the city, it features 43 courts, seating for nearly 2,000 fans, a lakefront beach, a restaurant, and indoor/outdoor event space.

In just its first year, we expect more than 500,000 visitors, making it both a destination for residents and a driver of tourism. And, The Fort has already made national headlines.

Its first major tournament, the Humana APP Fort Lauderdale Open, was

The Fort will serve as a training center for future champions, attract world-class events and generate thousands of hotel room nights. This is what happens when a city builds partnerships that deliver results.

We also have revitalized our legacy in tennis. With the help of a $1.5 million gift from the Orange Bowl, the city partnered with the United States Tennis Association to transform the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center.

These upgrades provide pristine clay courts year-round and will bring the facility up to international standards.

We can once again attract top-tier tournaments to our city.

The Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships will now call Fort Lauderdale its permanent home. And beyond that, we will see tournaments, clinics and events that inspire young athletes and engage the community.

The city has expedited work under the voter-approved parks bond initiative.

We are committed to expanding and improving our neighborhood parks to ensure every resident a place to relax and children a place to play.

We’ve completed projects across the city this past year — from Twin Lakes to Riverside and from Tarpon Cove to Hortt

Park. And we’re not slowing down. In the year ahead, work will begin at Croissant, Floranada, Harbordale, Lake Estates, and Palm Aire Village parks.

Another topic discussed in this issue is homelessness. It remains one of the greatest challenges facing our community.

In the past year, our efforts have sheltered more than 80 people, helped 18 secure housing and reunited 41 individuals with their families. Police outreach officers alone facilitated 34 reunifications.

Officers have also issued 137 Notices to Appear – where individuals are directed to community court and connected to services that can change their lives.

Earlier this fall, we made a significant expansion of our homelessness response — increasing our staffing, our enforcement and our outreach to make a real difference. Seven new positions are being added, bringing our team to 20 full-time employees focused solely on this issue.

That’s a larger, stronger and more coordinated effort than ever before.

Great news for Sunrise Middle School! Construction is officially underway on the first phase of our Parks Bond improvements. We broke ground last month, and crews are now hard at work installing new pickleball and pool lights, upgrading the track and long jump areas, enhancing landscaping, and removing the old racquetball courts to make way for a beautiful new pavilion. We remain on track to complete this phase by February 2026, and planning is well advanced for the next phase including the pavilion, turf field, and pool chiller. Excellent news for our community — the Breakers Avenue Project is now fully funded! After years of collaboration with City management, State Representative Chip LaMarca, Congressman Jared Moskowitz, and Broward County, we have secured a combined $12 million investment to enhance the streetscape, resiliency, and mobility along our beloved beach corridor. I am deeply grateful to our partners and the Central Beach neighborhood for their steadfast support and teamwork.

The Joseph C. Carter Park projects have now been approved for early funding to move forward with long-awaited renovations. A total of $7 million has been allocated — $1 million for upgrading the park’s pool system and $6 million for broader park improvements, including a new community center, playground, athletic fields, and upgraded lighting. Although originally planned for future fiscal years, the Fort Lauderdale Commission moved forward. It approved these funds through budget amendments at the October 7th meeting, allowing construction and modernization efforts to begin sooner than scheduled, benefiting District 3 residents and visitors. These investments reflect a commitment to building a better future and enhancing community spaces for all. Each Fort Lauderdale park embodies the character of the neighborhood it is in. This is why it is imperative to the City Commission that we work diligently to ensure accountability, efficiency, and community engagement when executing improvements on Parks Bond projects. This past year, Ann Herman and Riverside Park were both completed. Through a partnership with Broward County Public Schools, Stranahan High School Park is open outside of school hours, and Hardy Park celebrated its opening in November with a ribbon-cutting and a scavenger hunt. Many more park improvements will be completed in 2026, and I look forward to working with you to accomplish them.

From Streets to Stability The City’s Blueprint for Helping the Homeless

Homelessness remains one of Fort Lauderdale’s most complex and pressing issues. While the City has invested in outreach, enforcement, and supportive programs, we continue to see a significant number of individuals experiencing homelessness across our community.

“Homelessness shouldn’t be a life sentence,” said Carol Mitchell, Homeless Initiatives Program Manager. “It’s not a crime to be homeless, and having a safe place to lay your head at night should be a basic human right.”

As a commitment to strengthening and expanding the response, the City is bringing resources together into one coordinated team. This unified approach ensures that people in crisis are met with compassion, connected to services faster, and given a real path toward housing and stability, while also reducing repeated police calls, hospital visits, and the impacts on neighborhoods and businesses.

Next Phase: A Unified and Comprehensive Approach The City is reorganizing and expanding its homelessness response structure. With new staff members joining the team, neighbors will see more outreach on the streets, more medical and mental health support available on the spot, and more direct follow-up to connect people to housing. To make this possible, instead of working separately, City staff will work as an integrated team grouped into three key areas: Street Engagement, Intensive Outreach, and Program Services.

This ensures that whether they meet a police officer, medical personnel, or a caseworker, their information and needs will move with them across the system.

“The idea was to repurpose those positions that were previously detention officers into our homeless outreach program so that we could have more staff dedicated to it and provide better service,” said Porshia Garcia, Director of Community Services.

Stronger Enforcement and Accountability The restructured approach strengthens enforcement as a core part of the City’s strategy. Police officers, Park Rangers, and co-responders will be consistently present in public spaces to ensure ordinances are followed, deter unlawful activity, and address behaviors that negatively impact neighborhoods and businesses.

Enforcement actions will be paired with real-time offers of services. We aim to make it clear that while camping, trespassing, and public safety violations will not be tolerated, assistance is available for those willing to accept help.

“It starts with trust,” said Marie Joseph, Homeless Initiatives Coordinator. “And this is one of the reasons that we have the homeless outreach team. They know the participants, and they talk to them on a regular basis. They let them know that ‘Hey, although I’m a police officer, I’m

also a person who you can speak to. And when you’re ready for that help, you can always come to me, and I will provide you with that help.’”

The reorganized team is structured into three focus areas: • Street Engagement: Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) officers and their sergeant will be joined by three new Park Rangers from the Police Department. This group represents those directly engaging with people experiencing homelessness daily. They will also work alongside community partners that provide street outreach to maintain strong connections and leverage resources.

“I’ve had a lot of people go there and get their needs met,” said Monique Young, Community Health Coordinator. “And when you see somebody and you connect them with these services, it lets them know this program can work if you let the program work.”

• Intensive Outreach: The Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) Lieutenant and Community Health Coordinator from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue will be joined by a Nurse Practitioner, a co-responder group embedded with Police teams, and two case managers from Housing and Community Development. They will be supported by a team of Police psychologists. This multidisciplinary team addresses root causes and barriers, mental health, substance use, medical needs, and access to identification, ensuring individuals receive comprehensive, ongoing support. The goal is to divert individuals away from repeated hospital visits or arrests and toward meaningful, lasting connections to services.

• Program Services: The Homeless Initiatives Program Manager, Community Court Coordinator, and Senior Administrative Aide will now be formally aligned under Housing and Community Development. This will allow them to focus on coordination, case tracking, and ensuring supportive programs connect residents to housing and resources. We’re coordinating services so people don’t get bounced from one office to another.

“Every resource we have brings them in there. And then the patience and the support from the team keeps them there,” said Katrina Johnson, Assistant Director of the Community Services Department.

“Those small things really, truly matter.

And this homelessness initiative team is really touching the community in ways that are so profound.”

Keeping You Informed As this enhanced model rolls out, the City will keep the Commission and the public informed by sharing regular updates, including data on engagements, Community Court, shelter placements, housing placements, and how the City’s efforts are working.

Mitchell says this is all about building a more compassionate, effective system.

“We’re on our way to working more collaboratively as a city to moving some of these folks so that they can get the necessary help and treatment they need to start building their lives back again.”

Commission Priorities INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESILIENCE

Flood Relief and Recovery

The City Commission has approved the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBGDR) Action Plan, which outlines how the City will invest more than $88 million in federal funds to help residents, businesses, and neighborhoods recover.

At the heart of the plan is housing.

Hundreds of homes still require repair or reconstruction, and many families are still without permanent housing solutions. The recovery plan prioritizes getting residents back into safe, stable homes as quickly as possible.

Infrastructure is another critical focus, requiring improvements to drainage systems, the rebuilding of roads and utilities, and the protection of these systems against future storms.

The plan also looks to breathe new life into the local economy. Many small businesses, particularly those in lowlying areas, suffered major losses and disruptions due to the 1,000-year storm.

The City shaped its priorities based on data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Small Business Administration and community input collected through surveys and public meetings.

“The City recognizes that disaster recovery needs can change over time,” said Rachel Williams, Housing and Community Development Manager. “We remain committed to ongoing community engagement throughout every phase of the planning process to ensure residents know how to access available funding and resources to support their recovery.”

Of the $88 million, more than $40 million will help neighbors with housing, and $19 million will help with infrastructure.

The funds will be used to repair and rebuild homes that still need work, reimburse residents who covered costs out of pocket, and provide affordable housing options for those who are still displaced. $4.5 million will be dedicated to economic revitalization. This will help small businesses that faced physical damage from the flood and may have also been impacted financially due to road closures or loss of customer access, as some businesses had to shut down for several days.

“The City acknowledges the significant impacts of the April 12, 2023, flood on small businesses,” said Williams.

“Supporting economic development is a key component of the CDBG-DR Action Plan, providing small businesses with the resources and opportunities needed to recover from flood-related setbacks.”

The plan also prioritizes the needs of low-and moderate-income residents and is structured to ensure a timely and transparent recovery process. There is also funding for additional stormwater improvements that are designed to protect neighbors from future disasters.

The Road to Safety A Citywide Push for Safer Streets

The City of Fort Lauderdale is moving forward with a series of significant transportation safety and mobility improvements designed to calm traffic, enhance walkability and create safer, more connected neighborhoods.

These initiatives reflect the City’s long-term commitment to building a traffic network that prioritizes people as much as vehicles.

A key component of this effort is the Riverland Road Traffic Calming Improvements project. This covers the busy area between State Road 7 and Davie Boulevard. The plan includes raised crosswalks, patterned pavements, sidewalk adjustments, new signage, drainage enhancements and pavement markings across multiple intersections.

They include Tortugas Lane, SW 35 Avenue/Gulfstream Lane, Riverlane Terrace and others.

At the same time, downtown Fort Lauderdale is preparing for several pedestrian safety enhancements. One of the most visible changes is at the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard and SE 1 Avenue. To eliminate driver confusion and enhance safety, the new configuration will include stop signs on SE 1 Avenue and upgraded crosswalks along Las Olas Boulevard. Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons have also been installed.

Additional improvements are planned along the US-1/Federal Highway corridor. After community concerns raised by the Flagler Village Civic Association, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) conducted a detailed study between Broward Boulevard and Sunrise Boulevard. Based on data related to crash history, traffic patterns, pedestrian activity and walking audits, FDOT determined that two new signalized pedestrian crossings are needed. They are located at US-1/ NE 5 Street and US-1/NE 7 Street. The

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is still pursuing funding options with the City of Fort Lauderdale for the design and construction of these crosswalks.

A new traffic signal is also being planned at the intersection of NE 3 Avenue and NE 7 Street, with construction expected to take place in 2027. The City is also seeking to provide additional pedestrian crossing opportunities on Andrews Avenue near NE 5 Street, and Broward County has committed to programming the project within its Capital Improvement Program.

Fort Lauderdale Leads the Way with CyberSmart FTL Initiative

A

s technology becomes more integrated into everyday life, the need for strong cybersecurity practices has never been greater.

Recognizing this growing demand, the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Information Technology Services (ITS) Department has launched CyberSmart FTL, a groundbreaking citywide initiative designed to protect both residents and municipal operations from evolving digital threats.

“By continually practicing and by continually learning more, that’s how we become safe,” said Ron McKenzie, Director of Information Technology Services. “We want our residents to be safe. We want our HOAs to be safe, our churches to be safe, and different civic organizations to be safe. Because that’s a safe Fort Lauderdale.”

CyberSmart FTL is more than a cybersecurity program—it’s a community movement that redefines how cities can educate, engage, and empower their citizens in the digital era. The initiative takes a proactive approach by bringing cybersecurity awareness directly into neighborhoods, parks, and local venues.

Instead of expecting residents and employees to seek out training, the City is meeting people where they are— ensuring everyone, regardless of their technical background, has access to vital information about staying safe online.

“Security is not a product. It’s a process,” said Kemari Chen-Loy, IT Support Technician.

It’s continuously making our community aware, providing that support for them, and ensuring they have the tools needed to protect themselves. Because if they’re safe, then we’re safe as a community and as family.

- Kemari Chen-Loy, IT Support Technician Through workshops, demonstrations, and interactive sessions, CyberSmart FTL provides hands-on training to help participants identify phishing attempts, manage passwords securely, and navigate online risks with confidence.

“One of the things residents expressed concerns about is password management,” said Sandra Cabrera, Data and Digital Division Manager. “So, we provide excellent tips as to how to be able to use one password but change certain characters for different applications so it’s easy to remember.”

By explaining cybersecurity and making it approachable, the initiative builds trust between the City and its residents while reinforcing Fort Lauderdale’s leadership in civic digital responsibility.

“I joined IT because I love technology, but the community service aspect is my favorite part of this program,” says Joseph DellaVecchia, IT Security Analyst. “I love being able to actually help people and see the understanding in their eyes when

they see this is something they can take control of.”

Equally important, the program strengthens internal cybersecurity by equipping city employees with the tools and knowledge needed to prevent breaches, safeguard data, and ensure uninterrupted public services. This dual focus—protecting both the community and City operations—positions Fort Lauderdale as a forward-thinking leader in digital resilience.

The broader impact of CyberSmart FTL lies in its vision: transforming cybersecurity from a technical challenge into a shared community value. By turning awareness into action, Fort Lauderdale is cultivating a culture of digital safety that safeguards infrastructure, empowers individuals, and unites the community under a common goal—protecting the city’s digital future.

“Being able to teach the community and make them more cyber aware hits home because it happens to our relatives as well,” said Aarmondas Walker, Senior Technology Strategist. “So, it feels good to know we’re making a difference.”

Through education, transparency, and collaboration, CyberSmart FTL exemplifies how municipalities can lead confidently and responsibly in the digital age.

I Am Sistrunk Sistrunk has always been more than a name. It is a heartbeat. It is the rhythm of a community that has carried stories of resilience, innovation, and pride for generations. The I Am Sistrunk initiative was born from that spirit to remind every resident, business owner, and partner that this historic corridor is not just a place on the map; it is a living movement shaping the future of Fort Lauderdale.

This is a movement powered by the people who still call Fort Lauderdale home, and those who may have left but never forgot where home is - Von Howard, Administrative Supervisor in the Economic Development Division

A Movement Rooted in Legacy, Growing Toward the Future

Over the past year, I Am Sistrunk has sparked meaningful progress through collaboration, storytelling, and collective action. From the powerful “I Am Sistrunk” video series that amplifies local voices and shares the lived experiences of those who call this community home, to the inaugural Sistrunk Empowerment Summit, momentum continues to build. These initiatives have created spaces for dialogue, connection, and visioning, bridging the gap between history and opportunity.

The Summit brought together city leaders, residents, entrepreneurs, and youth for a day of conversation and co-creation focused on how Sistrunk’s legacy can guide its next chapter. Through open discussions on economic empowerment, small business development, cultural preservation, and community revitalization, the Summit reaffirmed one truth: transformation happens when the community leads.

“This wasn’t about lamenting or waiting for outside solutions to land in our laps,” said Howard. “This was about the actively listening voices of those who live, work, raise families, and run businesses right here in Sistrunk and its surrounding areas.

Through open dialogue and powerful

testimony, we addressed the challenges we know all too well and reinforced the often-overlooked strengths that define who we are.”

But I Am Sistrunk is just getting started. The next phase expands on this foundation by introducing a series of community talks designed to keep the conversation alive year-round. These dialogues will invite neighbors, business owners, and stakeholders to the table, literally and figuratively, to shape the future together. Each session will focus on topics that matter most to residents, such as entrepreneurship, public spaces, youth engagement, and celebrating Sistrunk’s cultural heritage.

As I Am Sistrunk continues to evolve, it serves as a reminder that progress is not about changing what is here. It is about amplifying it. It is about honoring the past while building a future that reflects the brilliance, creativity, and resilience of this community.

Bal Harbour Park Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Investing in Green Spaces

Fort Lauderdale residents chose to invest in the future by passing a $200 million Parks Bond. This major effort is transforming the City’s parks and recreation areas, and residents can already see the results taking shape throughout the community.

One of the newest examples of that success is Bal Harbour Park, a 20,000-square-foot community green space in District 1 that officially opened on September 27, 2025. Once a commercial site lined with asphalt and signage, the area has been transformed into a passive neighborhood park for everyone to enjoy.

Bal Harbour neighbors brought the park to life by donating trees and markers, making the space more inviting and personable.

This shows the pride and community spirit that defines Fort Lauderdale. The area is now a welcoming green space where families and neighbors can gather, connect, and enjoy the outdoors.

Bal Harbour Park became a reality thanks to the Parks Bond, which set aside $30 million to help grow Fort Lauderdale’s green spaces. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department completed much of the work including fencing, irrigation, grading, and painting. Their dedication helped bring the community’s vision to life.

“Bal Harbour Park is not only a beautiful green space for the community, but it has brought us closer together in many ways,” said Craig Batzel, President of the Bal Harbour Homeowners Association. “We worked as a neighborhood to ensure the park was built and now, we have a beautiful green venue to meet and share ideas. It far exceeds a “win-win” for all of Fort Lauderdale!”

Projects like this are helping Fort Lauderdale make recreation more accessible for everyone. Today, 84% of residents can walk to a park in 10 minutes, meeting the Trust for Public Land’s standard for green space access.

Another major milestone made possible through bond funding is the renovation of the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center in Holiday Park, which reopened on October 27, 2025. The modernized facility features 20 clay courts with a new state-of-the-art sub-surface irrigation system, a 700-seat stadium court, enhanced LED lighting, 13 shade structures, three chilled drinking fountains, 40 benches, a repainted facility with renovated restrooms, expanded and improved walkways, and enhanced landscaping with a new irrigation system.

Fort Lauderdale is home to a vibrant collection of public artwork that celebrates the city’s rich culture, history and creativity. Earlier this year, the City restored the Sankofa Bird, located near the corner of Sistrunk Boulevard and NW 2nd Avenue, back to its original gold color. This stunning piece of art was designed by South Florida artist George Gadson. The bird’s forward stride paired with its backward glance embodies the importance of learning from the past to build a stronger future.

This bronze sculpture was commissioned to honor the legacy of the pioneers who shaped the Sistrunk neighborhood and is a meaningful tribute to the city’s historic Black community.

The City is also adding a burst of color and imagination to Fort Lauderdale’s beaches. Artist Timothy Robert Smith has completed murals of four lifeguard towers, bringing in even more vibrant imagery to the shoreline. These murals not only enhance the visual appeal of the beach but also serve a practical purpose. They’re designed to help children and visitors easily identify and describe their location, promoting safety and a more enjoyable beach experience.

The landmark sculpture “Mariposas” by renowned Spanish artist Manolo Valdés is being installed in downtown Huizenga Park. The aluminum work features Valdés’ iconic stylized female head crowned with butterflies. This is the second public artwork donated by the James Winder Laird estate (also responsible for Marc Quinn’s Broken Sublime installed at Tunnel Top Plaza).

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s (FLPD) Field Training Unit plays a pivotal role in protecting our community. With a mission focused on training, developing, and evaluating police officer recruits, Public Service Aides (PSAs), and newly promoted sergeants, the program ensures that everyone is prepared for a successful, lifelong career in policing. Mission and Vision The Field Training Officers program’s mission is to provide objective evaluations and specialized training, ensuring police officer recruits, PSAs, and sergeants not only meet but exceed the expectations placed on them. Field Training Program Structure The Field Training Program is managed

by Sergeant Nicole Graves, who leads a dedicated team of 36 Field Training Officers (FTOs), including sergeants, and 4 Public Service Aides. Sgt. Graves is responsible for overseeing all aspects of training, including:

• Organizing meetings to discuss the effectiveness of the training program and make recommendations for improvement • Overseeing decisions related to remedial training or program extensions • Coordinating reviews of trainees facing potential termination from the program, ensuring that the final decision is made by the Chief of Police “To teach is to learn twice.” This quote by Joseph Joubert is one Sgt. Graves goes on to explain what it means to be an FTO at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

Selecting and Training Field Training Officers (FTOs) Becoming an FTO is a significant responsibility. Officers selected to join the Field Training unit must first complete an 80-hour course, which is in line with standards set by the Criminal Justice Training and Standards Center (CJSTC).

These officers are trained to be motivators, evaluators, and mentors for the next generation of law enforcement officers.

Two New Trucks, One Safer Fort Lauderdale

This fall, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) is adding not one, but two new life-saving vehicles to its fleet — a brandnew Hazmat truck and a state-of-the-art Airport Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) truck.

Together, these two trucks will make the city safer.

A “Rolling Lab” for Hazmat Incidents The first of the two additions is a 39-foot Spartan Metro Star heavy rescue Hazmat truck, replacing a 20-year-old tractor-trailer unit.

“This truck is important because it responds to hazardous materials incidents within the city and throughout the county as part of the regional team,” said Battalion Chief Christopher DavisPartridge, Hazmat team coordinator for FLFR. “It’s almost like a rolling lab and toolbox in one.”

Unlike the bulky older vehicle, the new single-axle design is easier to maneuver through Fort Lauderdale’s narrow and tree-lined streets.

Inside, firefighters will find specialized equipment — protective suits, monitors, and high-tech spectrometers capable of telling crews exactly what a suspicious chemical is and what hazards it might pose. “For instance, I could take something as simple as antifreeze, put it on one of our spectrometers, and it’ll tell me what the hazards are and exactly what it is,” explained Chief Davis-Partridge.

The city invested just over a million dollars to place this truck into service – a sign of its commitment to the safety of our airport and neighbors.

The second vehicle being added is a Rosenbauer Panther 4×4 ARFF truck, which will serve at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE). This truck replaces a unit that is more than a decade old and brings a newer, more reliable platform for responding to aviation emergencies like aircraft fires, fuel spills, or runway incidents.

Meet Arlinda Henley A Friendly Face in Fort Lauderdale

B

orn and raised in the small town of Millen, Georgia, Arlinda Henley never imagined she’d one day become one of the most familiar and respected faces in the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Parking Services Division.

Her journey began after graduating from Jenkins County High School, when a family visit to South Florida turned into something more. Arlinda fell in love with Fort Lauderdale and made the city her home in 1992.

When she first relocated, Arlinda found a job in Pompano Beach. Determined to work for Fort Lauderdale, she applied for several positions and her persistence paid off. She landed a part-time role as an Event Worker with the Performing Arts Center Authority (PACA), embracing the role with energy and dedication.

She worked tirelessly across various lots throughout the City and her efforts didn’t go unnoticed. After a couple months of part-time work, she was promoted to Event Worker Lead, and in April 1994, she officially became a full-time Parking Enforcement Specialist (PES). Arlinda has been with the City and Parking Division ever since.

Today, she continues her role as a PES, covering neighborhoods and districts all

across Fort Lauderdale. But her impact goes far beyond writing tickets. As a Field Training Officer (FTO), Arlinda plays a key role in onboarding and mentoring new hires, guiding them through their first experiences in the field. She’s passionate about training and enjoys giving new hires a full tour of the city, discussing boundaries, and easing them into their zones.

Arlinda brings both knowledge and compassion to her role and is known for her calm, professional demeanor, even in challenging situations. But her responsibility goes far beyond that and is rooted in genuine community support and effective public outreach. During the 2023 flood, Arlinda didn’t hesitate to step into the field. She connected directly with residents, shared essential information and distributed materials to ensure people understood the services and relief options the city had in place. Her efforts helped bridge the gap between the community and the resources they urgently needed.

“Moments like that highlight the broader purpose of our work,” said Parking Services Manager Bryan Greene. “We’re here not only to maintain order, but to strengthen trust, provide guidance and stand with our neighbors when they need us most. It’s about serving the public in a way that truly makes an impact.”

As she reflects on her career, Arlinda says it’s been a great experience filled with growth, learning and supportive leadership.

“I’ve had some great bosses over the years, and I’ve learned so much,” said Arlinda. “I really love what I do.”

“Arlinda’s years of dedicated service have made a lasting impact on our community and set a strong example for others to follow,” said Greene. “Her contributions continue to strengthen our department and uphold the high standards we strive for every day. “ The TAM team is proud to shine the spotlight on Arlinda Henley — a dedicated team member, an outstanding mentor and a valued member of the Parking Services Division for over 30 years.

Watching Over Our Waterways Fort Lauderdale is decorated with canals, rivers, inlets, and, of course, our beautiful beach. More than 165 miles of scenic inland waterways wind through the city, highlighting what makes Fort Lauderdale unique and why it truly lives up to its designation as the “Venice of America” or “The Yachting Capital of the World.”

Improving our waterways has long been a priority for our City Commission. Earlier this year, City Manager Rickelle Williams introduced a leadership role that would connect the boating community, marine industry and the residents of the City while focusing on issues related to the City’s waterways.

Marco Aguilera serves as the City’s first-ever Chief Waterways Officer. His job is clear -protect and preserve the waterways.

The City of Fort Lauderdale is excited to announce the formation of a new program that will help keep our waterways clean.

In October, City Commissioners approved the purchase of a Sewage Pumpout Vessel with a grant through the Clean Vessel Act from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The City continues to enforce a new ordinance that restricts overnight anchoring to no more than 30-days in a 6-month period. Fort Lauderdale Marine Patrol is monitoring the vessels with the purpose of removing boats that come to our city and clog our waterways. This means captains must arrange to move their vessel to a dock or mooring field.

Pumping out sewage can be considered an undesirable and challenging task, and calling a service to do it for you can be expensive. At times, boaters will even empty their waste holding tanks directly into the waterways, leading to unsanitary conditions.

With this grant, the City will provide a free on-demand or by-appointment service, sending its own vessel to other boats to empty their waste holding tanks. This will provide a safe and convenient way for boaters to dispose of their sewage waste and aims to reduce the amount of sewage that ends up in the City’s waterways.

The program is expected to launch in the spring of 2026 and will be available via the FixItFTL app or on the City’s website at fortlauderdale.gov.

Those who violate this ordinance face a maximum penalty of a $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail.

Safe Speed on the Water Boaters in Fort Lauderdale will soon see new speed restrictions along a busy stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved a new boating restricted area.

The new slow-speed, minimum-wake zone covers the section of the Intracoastal between the Oakland Park Boulevard Bridge and the Sunrise Boulevard Bridge, just west of Lauderdale Beach. The change aims to reduce congestion and improve safety in one of South Florida’s

most heavily trafficked boating corridors.

Slow speed is usually considered to be between 5 and 9 miles per hour.

Making Waves in Water Quality Fort Lauderdale is also adding five additional waterway quality testing sites, bringing the total number of sites to fifteen. The purpose of this program is to monitor water quality in areas where people regularly enter the water by testing for certain bacteria. The City is also including microbial source tracking to help determine the source when bacteria are identified.

Mangrove Restoration Project Mangroves play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems and communities.

And that’s why the City has also led multiple mangrove restoration projects.

They’ve already been planted at George English Park and Coontie Hatchee Park.

Mangroves protect shorelines from erosion and storm surges, provide habitat for marine life, and improve water quality.
