Crossflow Radiator and its Use One of the significant differences between the construction of radiators is the tank location.

For a crossflow radiator, both sides feature a vertical tank and a horizontal core whereby coolant flows from the right side toward the left side of the core and then to the engine.

The reason behind a robust opposite coolant flow is the water pump that pushes it to the engine. This increases the liquid’s compatibility with the temperature, and thus it cools down the engine. However, one of the major concerns is its size-to-engine ratio.

Downflow Radiators and their Use Downflow radiators are prevalent in vintage cars. The design of this radiator positions the tank on the upper and lower portion of the core. Contrary to crossflow radiators, it features a vertical core and a horizontal tank.

The gravity allows easy coolant flow as it enters from the core’s top and flows downwards, relieving the water pump from a high workload. It enjoys the flexibility of positioning the outlets and inlets in any direction, out of which most engine upgrades only require outlet modification.
