Car owners often have the dilemma of choosing the right car radiator for their vehicles.

Especially, when it comes to buying between a down-flow or cross-flow radiator it often is found confusing.

To ease the decision-making, here we throw some light on each. But before that let us understand the basics of radiator functioning.

Radiators’ cooling ability is determined by various factors like manufacturing material, its functionality, the design, and a lot more. However, the basic operability works by hot coolant from the engine entering the radiator tank and then traversing through the tubes while dissipating the heat and going into the other tank. More tube area achieves more cooling. It is a basic design found at any car radiator supplier. The difference lies in the flow styles i.e., down-flow and cross-flow.

➢ Down-flow The tanks in downflow radiators are positioned at the top and bottom of the radiator's core.

Before the coolant returns to the engine, it enters from the top tank and runs down through the core with the power of gravity, reducing the workload on the water pump. This style works well with older vehicles and trucks that feature a taller and narrower grille and radiator structure.

The downflow radiator has the benefit of being able to position the inlets and outlets left, right, center, or anywhere in between. The downside of a downflow radiator is that the radiator cap must be placed on the top tank, which exposes it to the high-pressure end of the cooling system, increasing the requirement for the cap to vent off causing some coolant to leak out of the system.

➢ Cross-flow The tanks of crossflow radiators are situated on the left and right ends of the radiator. Coolant enters the radiator from one side and is forced through the core to the opposite end of the radiator on its route back to the engine by the water pump. This style works well in newer vehicles with a large grille aperture.

Because of the crossflow design, the radiator cap may be placed on the low pressure (suction) side of the system, allowing lower pressure radiator caps to be utilized and reducing coolant loss by releasing only air.

➢ Final verdict The grill and hood of the car are the first points to look into after identifying a reliable radiator supplier. Depending on the design, one or both radiator types may be inappropriate. Even though it fits, changing from one type of radiator to another will need some custom assembly.

The easiest approach for most automobiles is to keep the existing radiator type. Lastly, downflow radiators have a restricted cooling capability when it comes to performance.
