THE NEXT GENERATION OF FLORAL DESIGNERS

FTD was proud to donate fresh flowers and supplies to Erin Fletcher, owner of Vine & Ivy Flowers in Suffield, CT, who led students from a variety of New York City schools in creating a floral arrangement.

“Growing a Kings Garden” is a program within the “Build a Better Brother” school program run by The Black Man Can, a non-profit that celebrates, educates, uplifts, and inspires boys and men of color.

It was a week fostering dialogue about the emotions tied to giving and receiving gifts and introducing the floral industry to a new generation.

FLORIST SPOTLIGHT:

CHET AND LEONA’S FLORAL SHOP

Chet & Leona’s Floral Shop in Milwaukee, WI is a family-owned and operated full-service florist for over 75 years.

FTD spoke with Tanya Stanislaw about the shop’s rich history and why the floral industry is so special.

FTD: Tell us about your business and how you got started in the floral industry.

Tanya : Chet & Leona’s Floral Shop has been part of my family—and the Milwaukee community—since 1950. I grew up in the shop, surrounded by flowers and the rhythm of a business built on care, connection, and hard work. After 17 years in Human Resources, my path changed unexpectedly when my dad passed away. Stepping in to carry on the business was both deeply personal and incredibly meaningful. It wasn’t just about running a flower shop—it was about honoring him, preserving what my family built, and continuing to serve our community in the same heartfelt way. Today, every arrangement we create carries that legacy forward. It’s more than flowers— it’s about helping people express love, support, and connection during life’s most important moments.

FTD: What are some of the unique challenges and rewards of being a local florist?

Tanya : Being a local florist is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with real challenges. We’re working with a perishable product, tight timelines, and deeply emotional occasions—there’s not a lot of room for error, and every arrangement matters. Add in the unpredictability of supply, rising costs, and competition from online order gatherers, and it can be tough. But the reward is what keeps you going. We get to be part of people’s most meaningful moments— celebrations, milestones, and even times of loss. There’s something incredibly special about creating something by hand that helps someone feel seen, supported, or loved. As a family-owned business, those connections to our community make all the difference.

FTD: What is a particularly memorable or meaningful experience you’ve had with a customer?

Tanya : After stepping into the business following my dad’s passing, the work took on an even deeper meaning for me. Not long after, I helped a customer who was also navigating the loss of a parent. They came in unsure of what they needed, just knowing they wanted something that felt personal. We talked through memories, favorite flowers, and small details that mattered. When they saw the final piece, they told me it captured exactly what they couldn’t put into words. That experience stayed with me because I understood firsthand what they were feeling. It reinforced why this work matters so much—flowers can speak in ways we sometimes can’t.

FTD: How do you maintain a personal touch and build relationships with customers in your community?

Tanya : For us, it starts with slowing down and really listening. Every order has a story behind it, and we take the time to understand what the customer is trying to express—whether it’s joy, love, or support during a difficult time. Being a local, family-owned shop means our customers aren’t just transactions— they’re neighbors, families, and familiar faces we get to know over time. We remember preferences, special dates, and the little details that matter. That personal connection carries through in every arrangement we design. It’s those relationships that have allowed us to stay rooted in our community for generations.

The team at Chet and Leona’s was featured on Fox 6 for Valentine’s Day in 2026.

FTD: What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in the floral industry?

Tanya : Be prepared to work hard—but also be open to learning everything you can. This industry is so much more than designing flowers. It’s early mornings, problem-solving, working with a perishable product, and showing up for people during some of the most emotional moments of their lives. My biggest advice is to stay curious and humble—learn from experienced designers, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to start at the ground level. At the same time, trust your creativity and find your own style. If you truly care about people and take pride in your work, this industry can be incredibly meaningful and rewarding.

FTD: What led you to become a member of the FTD network?

Tanya : FTD has been part of our story for as long as I can remember. My dad joined the network years ago, and it became an important part of how he grew the business and built relationships beyond our local community. After his unexpected passing, stepping into the business meant carrying forward not just what he built, but the partnerships he trusted. Continuing with FTD felt deeply personal—it was a way to stay connected to him while also continuing to grow. Today, FTD allows us to extend our reach while still delivering the same level of care, quality, and personal touch our shop has always been known for.

FTD: Tell us anything else of interest about your business.

Tanya : What makes our business truly special is the heart and history behind it. As a third-generation, family-owned shop, we’re carrying forward a legacy that’s been part of our community since 1950—while continuing to evolve with a style that feels both timeless and fresh. Our design approach blends traditional foundations with a modern edge, and every arrangement is custom-made with intention. No two pieces are ever the same, because no two stories are the same. For us, it’s always been about more than flowers—it’s about connection, care, and being trusted with life’s most meaningful moments.
