Service to the Community

BIG BEND COMMUNITY OUTREACH Over the 2-day community outreach (Oct 12-13th, 2019), The RAM team served 1,000+ patients, with over $430k in services rendered. RAM provides care for people from all over Florida and various parts of Georgia, many waiting 24+ hours in their cars and tents for access to free medical, dental, and vision services. Faculty pictured above helped guide a number of FSU NP students in providing medical services. Everyone involved said they worked hard but it certainly made them feel good about providing healthcare services for underserved areas.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS The CON continues to be called upon to provide sports physicals for the Special Olympics Area. This year we had a record number of sports physicals for the area students with over 60 physicals in 4 hours. Seven DNP nurse practitioner students and five FSU CON faculty helped guide these efforts. Both CON students and faculty look forward each year for the chance to participate in these sports physicals.

GRACE MISSION Drs. Lauren Kendall and Maria Whyte accompanied four Undergraduate students to Grace Mission in Tallahassee. Alongside the Leon County Health Department and the College of Medicine PA program, they provided health screenings for 50 community members. Additionally, they were able to administer Hepatitis A and Influenza vaccinations.

COVID-19 RELIEF EFFORTS

To aid the FSU community in the fight against COVID-19, College of Nursing faculty and staff members volunteered their time and efforts in assisting Florida State University’s Health & Wellness Center in establishing the University’s Drive-Through Testing Center in summer 2020.

Dr. Lauren Kendall spearheaded COVID-19 relief efforts to support our local health care partners (Archbold Memorial Hospital, Capital Regional Medical Center, and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare). Collectively Dr. Kendall donated, on behalf of the College of Nursing, over 2,000 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) items such as gloves (~1,400), shoe covers (~250), safety goggles, and isolation gowns (~700 gowns).

Dr. Kendall also led COVID-19 relief efforts to support Archbold Memorial Hospital and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare by leading nursing students in sewing and donating over 100 face masks, as well as helping screen individuals going to the Health Department. Dr. Kendall has also coordinated volunteer opportunities for nursing students with Second Harvest of the Big Bend, as well as Second Harvest of Tampa Bay and Second Harvest of Central Florida.
