THE MISSION OF THE ARTS ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM is to provide its graduates with a strong academic and practical foundation for a successful professional career in the arts sector. The program stresses the premise that arts administrators are at the service of the arts, education, society at large, and of the overarching goal of enriching the human experience. It is based on the idea that future leaders of the field need to understand the roots and characteristics of the nonprofit arts sector in the United States, be familiar with different management models, be able to assess the artistic and aesthetic implications of their managerial decisions, and have the analytical skills needed to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the nonprofit arts and culture world. During their studies, students take a number of classes that make up the program’s core curriculum and, in consultation with the program director, choose the elective courses that best suit their professional goals. In addition to their work in the classroom, students engage in professional internships that put their academic knowledge into practice and help them develop the skills needed in the professional world, resulting in a high success rate of job placement after graduation.

ENSEMBLES AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES Performance opportunities for non-music majors at the College of Music include bands, choirs, orchestras, jazz ensembles, world music ensembles, popular music ensembles, Marching Chiefs, and Seminole Sound pep band. Some groups require an audition for placement, but several allow students to register without requiring an audition. Ensemble and production auditions are not restricted by one’s major.
REPRESENTATIVE LIST OF COURSES AVAILABLE TO NON-MUSIC MAJORS*
FOR STUDENTS WHO WISH TO MAKE MUSIC MORE OF A SECONDARY FOCUS of their studies at FSU, the College of Music offers the option for a music minor. Admission to the minor requires an application and audition, and the curriculum includes coursework in music theory and sight-singing, music history and literature, private lessons, and ensemble participation. Those students who are admitted to the music minor prior to their second year of study may also be eligible to participate in the Music Living-Learning Community at Cawthon Hall. Students who do not wish to pursue a music major or music minor may still take a variety of classes through the College of Music, as well as participate in its many ensembles and productions. While some ensembles are open to any student without an audition, many others require an audition for placement. Participation in the Marching Chiefs is a particularly popular choice for non-music majors, who represent the majority of students in that group. One-on-one private lessons are also offered on a space-available basis. Contact the faculty of your instrument for information regarding availability of private lessons.
› Music Literature, Listening, and Understanding (MUL 2010) › The Art of Songwriting (MUT 1005) › Modern Popular Music (MUH 2019) › Music in the World (IDS 2170) › Music in World Cultures (MUH 2051) › American Roots Music (MUH 2054) › Beginning Class Piano (limited sections) (MVK 1111) › Beginning Class Guitar (MVS 1116) › Intermediate Class Guitar (MVS 2126) * For more information about these and other courses available to non-music majors, please contact the College of Music Office of Student Success at 850-644-6105.
MUSIC MINOR OR DOUBLE MAJOR Music can be added as a double major to pair with most other degree programs at FSU, and many majors also require the completion of a minor. Students pursuing majors such as English or Political Science, for example, may select a minor of their choice to fulfill degree requirements and complement their studies in another area. Completing a music minor may be an ideal way to obtain a qualification in music without pursuing the double major. Both options, however, require a successful audition for entry.

THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY PERCUSSION STUDIO is one of the nation’s leading percussion programs. Our graduates continue to influence national and international performance and pedagogy in all genres of percussion as professional symphonic musicians, university professors, chamber music specialists, secondary instructors, and industry representatives. The studio currently comprises 30 percussion majors at the doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate levels and is capped at that number to provide the best hands-on applied and ensemble experience for our students. Admission is highly competitive at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Opportunities for performance with our symphonic, jazz, and world music ensembles are open to all through auditions at the beginning of each semester, plus additional performance opportunities with several regional orchestras including the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. The FSU Percussion Ensemble has won the Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition three times (2007, 2011, 2023), released four internationally acclaimed CD recordings, and developed a huge following on social media through reference video recordings of works by Pat Metheny and John Psathas. These projects are tracked, edited and mastered by FSU percussion students using our integrated audio and video technology, which is singular to Florida State. In addition, we boast one of the largest professional instrument inventories in the country, providing all our majors with cutting-edge equipment for performance and practice.
