ABOUT THE CENTER

The Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication at Florida State University, founded by Dr. Felipe Korzenny in 2004, is devoted to educating students and professionals and to advancing knowledge in Hispanic and multicultural marketing. The Center is the first of its kind in the United States and is widely recognized as the nation’s premier education and research institute in the field.

The Center’s programs are housed in FSU’s School of Communication.

Faculty and students working with the Center conduct groundbreaking research, produce publications that further the understanding of Hispanic consumer behavior, and serve as an innovative source of knowledge for the Hispanic marketing industry. Educational programs include: groundbreaking courses, a multicultural marketing concentration for graduate students, a Hispanic marketing minor for undergraduate students, scholarships, internships, a mentorship program, and highly regarded Certificates earned by both students and professionals.

The Center is lead by Founder and Director, Dr. Felipe Korzenny; Associate Director and Assistant Professor, Dr. Sindy Chapa; and Co-Founder and Senior Advisor, Dr. Betty Ann Korzenny, as well as an Advisory Board comprised of industry leaders.

SOBRE EL CENTRO

El Centro de Comunicación y Mercadeo Hispano, fundado en la Universidad Estatal de Florida (FSU), fue el primero en los Estados Unidos en establecer un programa dedicado a la enseñanza de la mercadotécnia para Hispanos. El Centro fue creado por el Dr. Felipe Kozenny en el año 2004 con el fin de educar y preparar estudiantes y profesionistas sobre la cultura de los consumidores Hispanos y multi-culturales. Hasta el día de hoy, El Centro es ampliamente reconocido como el mejor instituto de educación e investigación de la nación dedicado al Mercadeo Hispano.

El Centro es parte de la facultad de Comunicación en la Universidad Estatal de Florida (FSU). Actualmente, los académicos y estudiantes afiliados con El Centro trabajan en innovadoras investigaciones, produciendo publicaciones de impacto que ayudan a entender el comportamiento del consumidor Hispano. Se pretende con ello, servir como una fuente importante de conocimiento para la industria sobre el mercadeo Hispano.

Entre sus programas educativos, El Centro ofrece la especialidad en Mercadeo Hispano, los certificados a nivel de licenciatura y maestría en Mercadeo multicultural, y una variedad de seminarios para estudiantes y profesionistas que desean tener una especialidad en comunicación mercadotécnica enfocada en los consumidores Hispanos. Además de los programas académicos, El Centro ofrece un programa de mentoría en desarrollo profesional, así como oportunidades de becas para los estudiantes.

El Centro es liderado por su fundador y director Dr. Felipe Korzenny, directora asociada Dra. Sindy Chapa, y co-fundadora Dra. Betty Ann Korzenny, al igual que por un panel de expertos conformado por los top líderes de la industria.

WELCOME FROM THE DEAN I would like to welcome each of you to the Hispanic/Latino Media and Marketing International Conference. In its 5th version, the prestigious College of Communication and Information at The Florida State University is pleased to be hosting the 2015 conference.

The College has one of the most innovative Centers for Hispanic Marketing Communication in the country and we are delighted to meet and bring exceptional people together in forums like this, to ensure our College of Communication remains at its cutting edge.

I would like to give you an idea of what you can expect and what we hope to achieve over the next few days. The conference will cover topics about marketing communication, telecommunication policies, media adoption, and culture, among others. This conference is the largest meeting of academics, media professionals, and students from universities in the U.S., Latin America, and Spain.

We are transforming the way we communicate to improve continuously our ability to create a platform where global scholars present their research work, findings, and theories as markets expand. Our researchers provide ways to develop new opportunities to present information, communicate with the Hispanic audience, and empower citizens to engage their communities.

WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR This is an unusual year for the Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication at Florida State University. The Center is hosting the Hispanic/Latino Media and Marketing Conference 2015, and that is an honor for us. This is the first conference of its type hosted by our Center and the University.

This is also an unusual year because Dr. Sindy Chapa has been assuming all responsibility for the leadership of the Center as I retire from FSU this Spring semester. Dr. Chapa initiated this conference and all the credit goes to her and the great students who have been working with her in making it possible. Clearly the support from the office of Dean Larry Dennis and the Chair of the School of Communication, Dr. Gary Heald, has been indispensable in making this possible.

I want to personally thank and welcome all participants and presenters to this Hispanic/Latino Media and Marketing Conference 2015 with great hopes for productive collaborations and contributions to both academia, and the public and private sectors.

We are so pleased to host the 5th International Conference on Hispanic Media and Marketing. We welcome you to Florida State University (FSU) and to the School of Communication, home of the Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication.

Given the constant need to train professionals in Hispanic marketing communication, my colleague, Dr. Felipe Korzenny, created this Center in 2004. The Center has been devoted since then to producing groundbreaking research and to educating students who go on to serve in the Hispanic marketing industry. Today, we are honored to lead this Conference and welcome you to our beautiful campus.

This is an important time for all us. As the Hispanic population continues to prosper and emerge and as technology changes the way we communicate, we need to study the new opportunities and challenges associated with the way we present information, connect with Latino audiences and empower Hispanic communities. This Conference serves as a forum to present, discuss and contribute to research in these areas.

This year, it is with great pleasure that we announce that this Conference will serve as the official birthplace for the long-awaited Association for Latino Media and Marketing Research. While we officially establish this much-needed organization and welcome its presence in our academic field, we will also reflect on the importance of our past. Our Center celebrates its 10th anniversary, and we are pleased to honor its founder and Director Felipe Kozenny at this Conference. Dr. Korzenny, who many of you revere as a pioneer and innovator in our field, is globally recognized for his contributions to our academic discipline and to industry as well. We are pleased to dedicate the Conference’s Gala in honor of Dr. Kozenny’s career and lifetime achievements.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge that you are all in a very special place. Florida State University is an institution full of history and is highly committed to diversity, innovation and excellence. On the 10th anniversary of the Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication, we would like to honor its founder, Dr. Felipe Korzenny, for his achievements and indispensable contributions to the Hispanic marketing industry.

Dr. Korzenny has been a visionary in the field of Hispanic Marketing and the Center that he established has served as a model for subsequent ones founded throughout the country. Even before coming to Florida State University in 2003, Dr. Korzenny was a key expert in the field. The company that he founded in 1999, Hispanic & Asian Marketing Communication Research, was one of the first in the United States to explore multicultural marketing research. Along with his wife, Betty Ann, Dr. Korzenny wrote the first textbook for Hispanic Marketing, Hispanic Marketing: A Cultural Perspective, published by Elsevier, 2005, and Hispanic Marketing, 2nd Edition: Connecting with the New Latino Consumer, published by Routledge, 2011. As a teacher, consultant, and researcher, Dr. Korzenny has contributed enormously to the field of Hispanic marketing and we acknowledge him for his significant accomplishments.

Plenary Session 1 PRESENTING THE STATE OF THE HISPANIC MARKETING INDUSTRY IN THE U.S.

This panel composed of unparalleled marketing expertise will provide salient case studies of what major US corporations are doing these days to better connect with US Hispanics. Coca-Cola and Walmart have been loyal advocates of the Hispanic community and have learned multiple lessons on how to approach this important market. The Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies has for a long time commissioned studies to make the economic case for reaching out to Hispanics and that will be explained in this panel. Furthermore, Wells Fargo will elaborate on the virtue of community involvement for a better business relationship with the Hispanic community. This all-star panel will enlighten the audience with its experience and deep understanding of Latino consumers.

Este panel esta compuesto por un grupo de expertos en la area de mercadotecnia, quienes presentarán, a través de estudios de casos, lo que las compañías líderes en los Estados Unidos realizan hoy en día para conectarse con los Hispanos en América. Las compañías Coca-Cola y Walmart han sido grandes promotores de las comunidades Hispanas y han aprendido, a través de los años, a conectarse con ellos. Ejemplos de sus logros serán discutidos. Por otro lado, la Asociación de Agencias de Publicidad Hispanas (AHHA) se ha encargado de estudiar y analizar el impacto económico que conllevan las campañas dirigidas al mercado Hispano. Los resultados de sus últimos estudios serán presentados en esta sesión. Finalmente, la compañía banquera Wells Fargo ha logrado involucrarse con los Hispanos a través de campañas comunitarias, y así mejorar sus relaciones comerciales. Estas estrategias, a través de estudios de casos serán también utilizados aquí por Wells Fargo. En resumen, esta sesión integra un panel de destacados profesionistas que con su conocimiento y trayectorias en la industria nos ayudarán a comprender a los consumidores Latinos.

The Latino Public Radio Consortium (LPRC) presents a multimedia programming model for engaging Latinos in public media based on the case study of Take Two–a multimedia news magazine that examines news relevant to Latino and multiethnic communities in Los Angeles and the most listened-to local program in Southern California Public Radio’s (SCPR). LPRC gives an overview, lessons learned, best practices and a discussion about Latino public media and multimedia news in light of the One Nation Media Project results.

El Consortium de la Radio Pública Latina presenta un modelo de programación de multimedios enfocado a atraer más radioescuchas Latinos. El panel utilizará el caso de la revista de multimedios “Toma Dos,” el cual explora los temas de noticias de los Latinos, así como el de las comunidades multi-étnicas de la área de Los Angeles. Este es el programa de radio pública más escuchado en el Suroeste de California, y a través de este ejemplo, se pretende dar otra visión, así como compartir las tácticas utilizadas para mejorar la audiencia. Asimismo, El panel presenta y discute los resultados de la encuesta nacional llamada One Nation Media Project.

Session 2.2 ADVERTISING STRATEGIES ON SPANISH TELEVISION: THE CASE OF SERIAL FICTION PROGRAMMING

This study analyzes forms of advertising on channels broadcasting general interest programming from TV networks in Spain, focusing on television serialized fiction on primetime. Fiction is a key element on digital television, as it was on its previous analogic framework. The study of the conventions and new means of inserting advertising in this scenario is crucially important in order to gain knowledge about strategies in programming. Enhanced advertising (for instance, superimposed banners) has been an essential aspect of this study. Throughout this work the advertising insertions have been examined in regard to television fictional genres, mainly concerning series, serials, and sitcoms. The study was conducted by the Research Group on Image, Sound and Synthesis (GRISS) of the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain).

A través de este estudio, se pretende explorar la publicidad utilizada en la programación de interés general en las redes de televisión en España, concentrándose en la programación de serial de ficción en el horario estelar. La ficción es un elemento clave en la televisión digital, como lo fue en su marco analógico anterior. El estudio de los convencionalismos sociales y los nuevos significados de la inserción de publicidad es de gran importancia a fin de adquirir conocimientos acerca de las estrategias de programación. Dentro de los elementos de la publicidad, los banners superpuestos han sido el aspecto esencial de este estudio. A lo largo de este trabajo, las inserciones de publicidad son examinadas en lo que respecta a los géneros televisivos de ficción. Es decir, este estudio principalmente examina la relación entre la clase de inserción publicitaria y las series, seriales y comedias de la televisión española.

TVE Internacional is an internationally broadcast Spanish-language channel run by RadioTelevisión Española (RTVE), Spain’s National broadcaster. News, culture, education and entertainment programs broadcasted by TVE International target a very heterogeneous audience, such as Spanish immigrants, Spanish-speaking and international audiences. Based on doctoral research, this study presents the development of TVE Internacional in America from 2001 to 2006.

In particular, the paper contextualizes TVE Internacional’s performance in relation to other European public broadcaster’s international television services in the Latin American cable television market during that period.

TVE Internacional es el canal que sirve como medio de difusión Pública de Radio y Televisión Española (RTVE) dirigido a la emigración española, identificada como audiencias hispanohablantes internacionales. A partir de una investigación doctoral, se expone el desarrollo de TVE Internacional en América. En concreto, a través de este estudio, se analiza el modelo de programación de TVE Internacional, y se contextualiza su desempeño en relación con otros servicios de televisión internacionales, públicos y europeos en la televisión de pago en América Latina durante el período del 2001 al 2006.

The search for new advertising integration strategies in the current Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) schedules becomes a top goal for public and commercial broadcasters and advertisers.

General-programming channels must compete with their counterparts and thematic channels. The introduction of DTT in Spain has happened by multiplying the offer on open television, which in turn stresses the advertising fight. This study examines the interaction between the advertising insertion forms favored by the latest European regulations and the programming flow. This research focuses on reality television genres (Info shown macro genre), which accumulate the highest diversity of advertising ways and saturation rates, but also show the main innovations in the development of advertising content

America is changing; minorities comprise a growing portion of the U.S. population and have contributed to an increasingly diverse, multicultural America. Hispanics for example, have accounted for the majority of the growth in the U.S. population over the past decade and will continue to determine what the majority of American youth look like for decades to come. As the U.S. becomes more multicultural, marketing has had to change to connect with this diverse demographic. This study examines the development of multicultural marketing from both an industry and research perspective. It provides a brief background of the growth of the multicultural populations, reviews the key concepts that have been the focus of multicultural research to date and suggests contributions that research can make to this budding field. This project involves discovering how Hispanic marketing has developed in health care, alcohol, and fast food industries.

Estados Unidos está cambiando, las minorías representan una parte de la población de rápido crecimiento en Estados Unidos y han contribuido cada vez más a la creciente, diversa y multicultural nación americana. Los hispanos, por ejemplo, han representado la mayor parte del crecimiento de la población de Estados Unidos en la última década y continuarán determinando cual será la imagen de la mayoría de los jóvenes de Estados Unidos en las próximas décadas. A medida que los Estados Unidos se vuelve más multicultural, el marketing ha tenido que cambiar para conectarse con esta diversidad demográfica. Este estudio examina el desarrollo del marketing multicultural, desde el punto de vista de la industria y la investigación. Session 3.1 – Room B HISPANIC JOURNALISTS’ BELIEFS ABOUT THEIR CAREER, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIAL MEDIA

This panel will present results from the 2014 State of Hispanic Journalists Report. The report describes the findings of a survey of 294 journalists who self-identified as Hispanic/Latino journalists practicing in the United States and Puerto Rico. Technology was seen as the biggest factor that will affect Latino journalism in the next five years. The implications of the report include: 1) Latino journalists are “guardedly optimistic” about their careers having been impacted by the economy but see a positive potential driven by technology. 2) Latino journalists embraced entrepreneurism and many report that the growth of online and social media has created an opportunity. 3) Participants reported a need for training on tools to publish in digital media and tools to create and manage their digital platforms. 4) A preliminary snapshot of the 2015 survey results if they are available.

Este panel presenta los resultados del Informe del Estado de Periodistas en el 2014. El informe describe los resultados de una encuesta realizada a 294 periodistas que se auto-identificaron como periodistas Latinos/Hispanos que ejercen la profesión periodística en los Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico. La tecnología fue vista como el factor que más afectará el periodismo latino en los próximos cinco años. Las implicaciones a discutir incluyen los siguientes resultados: 1) Los periodistas latinos son “cautelosamente optimistas” sobre sus carreras después de haber sido afectados por la economía, pero ven un potencial positivo impulsado por la tecnología. 2) Los periodistas latinos se identifican como emprendedores y muchos de ellos reportaron que el crecimiento de los medios sociales y en línea ha creado oportunidades para ellos. 3) Los participantes informaron sobre la necesidad de capacitación sobre el uso de herramientas para publicar, crear y gestionar plataformas digitales. 4) Finalmente, los resultados preliminares de la encuesta del 2015 serán presentados en este panel.

Session 3.2 – Room C CULTURAL TRENDS IN LATIN AMERICAN MASS MEDIA

This study examines the experiences of eight companies, each one operating in a specific country in Latin America (Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina) from different industries at different stages of implementation on their Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) incursions, the largest and poorest socio-economic group. Through theoretical and qualitative analysis, the study finds that value propositions, which most successfully address low-income consumers’ needs, are those related to where the firms targeted their offerings and the story they tell about it. Conversely, a common factor in long-term failure is related to non scalable value propositions.

Este estudio examina las experiencias de ocho empresas que operan en América Latina (Perú, México, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile y Argentina) provenientes de diferentes industrias, en sus diferentes etapas de la implementación del modelo llamado “Base de la Pirámide” (BoP). El modelo BoP se implementó en estos casos con los grupo socio- económicos más grandes y más pobres en cada país. A través de un análisis teórico y cualitativo, el estudio encuentra que las propuestas de valor que abordan con mayor éxito las necesidades de bajos ingresos de los consumidores, son los relacionados con las empresas donde dirigen sus ofertas y la historia que cuentan al respecto. Por otra parte, un factor común en el fracaso a largo plazo está relacionado con las propuestas de valor reconocidas como “no escalables.”

The newspaper “La Correspondencia” was one of the oldest of the country (Cuba), regional in nature and highly regarded. Since 1929 when the school of arts and crafts of Cienfuegos, Cuba, was founded, this newspaper devoted part of its pages to inform the school with great ethics and responsibility to society. This valuable media outlet helped to build a positive image of the teaching center and provides knowledge about local history to new generations of Cienfuegueros.

El periódico “La Correspondencia” fue uno de los más antiguos del interior del país, Cuba, de carácter regional y gran prestigio. Desde 1929 en que se fundó la escuela de Artes y oficios de Cienfuegos, dedicó parte de sus páginas a informar acerca de dicha escuela con ética y gran responsabilidad con la sociedad. Este valioso medio de prensa contribuyó a la construcción de una imagen positiva del referido centro docente y aportó conocimientos a la historia local y a las nuevas generaciones de Cienfuegueros.

Session 3.2 – Room C (Continued) MIND AND BODY TOWARD VIOLENT CINEMATOGRAPHY IN MEXICO María Esther Chamosa Sandoval, Universidad Justo Sierra, Mexico

It is impossible to dissociate emotional response from the brain. Rationality is embedded in the origin of many emotions. During emotional processing, the brain is active as the coordinator and decision-maker for motor reflexes and glandular function. Emotion is intertwined with cognition from start to finish in a permanent union. This study presents the results of physical and emotional responses to the display of violent fragments among Mexican film spectators. It shows how emotion and reason merge, antagonistic but complementary, when a group of Mexican college students are exposed to a sequence of physical and sexual violence images against women.

Es imposible disociar al cerebro de las emociones, pues, por un lado, muchas emociones tienen un origen racional, y por el otro, el cerebro participa activamente en todos los procesos emotivos, al menos como coordinador de los reflejos motores y del funcionamiento glandular; de ahí que razón y emoción se entrelazan de inicio a fin en un permanente regreso compartido en el que se fusionan, separan, construyen, destruyen y reconstruyen at infinitum. La ponencia muestra la fusión antagónico-complementaria entre emoción-razón-emoción-razón durante la exhibición de fragmentos fílmicos violentos. Para rastrear estas ideas en la realidad del joven filmoespectador mexicano, se realizaron ciertos experimentos, integrados por seis grupos de discusión con setenta y ocho universitarios, cada uno con trece integrantes (cuarenta mujeres, treinta y ocho hombres).

A cada grupo se le expuso una secuencia de imágenes en video integradas por seis minutos que muestran violencia física y sexual en contra de mujeres. Aquí se presentan los resultados de su propia auto observación (registrando respuestas emocionales y físicas-orgánicas).

Tratando de entrar en la mente de los consumidores conscientes en los temas de salud, se observan sus preferencias de compra a través de la exploración del mercado organizado por GfK MRI y el análisis predictivo de SSG. Utilizando estas bases de datos, se presenta una muestra nacional de los patrones de conducta de cien mil consumidores. La mayor tasa de crecimiento de la marca se asocia con las elecciones de los consumidores identificados con altos niveles de conciencia sobre el bienestar de su salud. Es decir, los resultados demuestran que los consumidores que valoran el “bienestar de su salud” son más perceptibles a las “marcas” que aquellos que no lo son.

Adicionalmente, el análisis SSG presenta un proceso de planificación para las marcas impulsando el llamado “SSG Wellness Spectrum,” una herramienta de ayuda para los mercadólogos de marcas. Por último, los subsegmentos de aculturación asociados con los niveles de percepción sobre el “bienestar para su salud” fueron también identificados como impulsadores de compra y de participación en el comercio móvil.

FROM THE INSIDE OUT: USING GROUNDED THEORY TO ASSES BROMLEY’S ACCOUNT PLANNING DISCIPLINE IN 2010 Isaac I. Muñoz, University of Dallas

The Account Planning discipline was born in the United Kingdom around 1965 and moved to the United States in the early 1980’s. Although this discipline has become well established in large and small advertising agencies across the world, academic research for account planning in Hispanic advertising agencies in the United States has been minimal. In this research, the author interviewed the core of the account planning team of the Hispanic advertising agency, Bromley. This research uses grounded theory to code and analyze all in-depth interviews (IDIs). The major themes include, the definition of account planning discipline, the role(s) account planners play in Hispanic advertising agencies, and perhaps most significant, each planner’s forward-looking perspective on the future of the discipline in a multicultural world.

La disciplina sobre la Planificación de Cuentas nació en el Reino Unido alrededor de 1965 y se trasladó a los Estados Unidos en la década los 80s. Aunque esta disciplina se ha consolidado en las agencias de publicidad grandes y pequeñas en todo el mundo, la investigación académica para la planificación de cuentas en agencias de publicidad hispanas en los Estados Unidos ha sido mínima. En esta investigación, el autor se entrevistó con el equipo de Planificación de Cuentas de la agencia de publicidad hispana Bromley. Esta investigación utiliza la teoría para codificar y analizar a profundidad todas las entrevistas realizadas (IDIS ). Los temas principales incluyen, la definición de la disciplina planificación de cuentas, el papel (s) que los planificadores estratégicos juegan en agencias de publicidad hispanas, y quizás lo más importante, la perspectiva de cada planificador sobre el futuro de la disciplina en un mundo multicultural.

Session 3.3 – Room D (Continued) THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURAL RELEVANCY: HOOTERS CASE STUDY Hernan Tagliani, The Group Advertising

Orlando Science Center (OSC) has been one of America’s top science centers with educational opportunities throughout hundreds of exhibits and programs. OSC houses the largest publicly accessible refractor telescope in the state of Florida. Since they had an established reputation and audience in the Anglo market, the OSC wanted to reach out to Hispanics in order to grow their presence in the Central Florida area. They wanted to expand their markets and get some brand recognition within the Hispanic community. The study examines how the Group Advertising (TGA) expanded the Hooters audience by creating a branding concept appealing to the Hispanic community, more effectively, and opened up a prodigious new flow of memberships. With messaging targeted specifically to Hispanics and their families, TGA developed engaging campaigns utilizing TV, radio, online, print, social media, and live remotes to promote the different exhibits throughout the years.

La cadena de restaurantes Hooters quería llegar a los mercado hispanos con el fin de hacer crecer su presencia en el área central de la Florida. El grupo Hooters deseaba ampliar su audiencia, así como adquirir mayor reconocimiento con la comunidad hispana. El estudio examina cómo el grupo de publicidad “The Group Advertising (TGA )” amplió la audiencia Hooters mediante la creación de un concepto de marca apelando a la comunidad hispana, y creando, de forma efectiva, un nuevo flujo prodigioso de membresías. What is the best language for reaching U.S. Hispanics? The answer is, of course, “it depends.”

Language ability, media platform, acculturation levels, years in the U.S., and other factors can all play a role in determining audience preference and marketers’ language strategy. The “language question” is a highly nuanced one, research increasingly shows. While linguistic segmentation can be highly effective and has value to advertisers and marketers, studies have shown that cultural segmentation is often a preferred way to reach U.S. Hispanics. Turning to social media, we explore the roles that language and culture play in the online space. What languages are preferred and used by which U.S. Hispanics, on which social platforms, and under what circumstances? This panel will examine the

trends and knowledge surfacing on how U.S. Latinos use social media, search, and the choices they make regarding language selection; the influences of culture; and implications for marketers and advertisers.

Advertising remains the main source of income for the obsolete business model of conventional radio in Spain and Catalonia. During the economic crisis in 2008, ad spending dropped. However, the radio was the medium that has withstood the crisis thanks to local advertisers, who are now spending less money on advertising compared to previous years. Given this scenario, the radio must seek new business opportunities in the digital environment that is full of opportunities. This study analyzes radio programmer’s strategies in the face of economic crisis and how new routine production of conventional radio set synergies between the antenna and social networks, specifically Facebook and Twitter. The goal of this study is to go into more depth on: policies and strategies of conventional broadcasters, how content management and radio programming is implemented, and finally the use of social networks by radio operators.

Los nuevos soportes de difusión de la señal radiofónica, las nuevas formas de consumo, la fragmentación de la audiencia, el nuevo entorno de Internet, la convivencia analógico-digital, la caída de la inversión publicitaria y la crisis económica, son los principales retos internos que desvelan diariamente a los operadores radiofónicos, a los que deben sumarse la exacerbada competencia resultante del ecosistema digital. Entre todos estos desafíos, los aspectos más importantes que deciden el futuro del medio y sus rutinas productivas son las vías de financiación de la radio como medio, la penetración del medio en la era digital y por último, Internet como el nuevo escenario para desarrollar la actividad de este medio convencional. Este estudio pretende analizar las estrategias de los programadores radiofónicos frente a la crisis y cómo las nuevas rutinas de producción de la radio convencional establecen sinergias entre la antena y las redes sociales, específicamente Facebook y Twitter. Nuestro objetivo se basa en profundizar en las políticas y estrategias de los radiodifusores convencionales, en cómo se realiza la gestión de los contenidos y la oferta radiofónica y finalmente en la presencia y el uso de las redes sociales por los operadores.

Se presenta la propuesta de un programa de concientización sobre el uso inteligente de los teléfonos móviles, a través de las redes sociales, dirigido a universitarios de 18 a 25 años que vivan en la Ciudad de México, con la finalidad de impulsar la conciencia social por medio de estos dispositivos. Este programa va dirigido a los universitarios que estén activos en redes sociales a través de los teléfonos inteligentes, para fomentar el buen uso de éstas y saber como utilizar estas herramientas tecnológicas más allá de su uso operativo, lo que busca este proyecto es despertar la conciencia social de los jóvenes, para pasar de tener información a estar informados. Para que las actividades propuestas en este programa de concientización lleven al usuario a una acción de cambio y a identificar los malos hábitos que se tienenen redes sociales, así como despertar las mentes de los universitarios. Latinos are facing significant health challenges such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, in higher proportion as compared to the rest of the American population. Federal and state health agencies have increased information on social media on how to treat these problems, and some of them even provide that information in Spanish; yet there are some gaps on how and what information is provided. This paper examines the social media pages and Internet websites used by these agencies to disseminate information on preventive practices in both English and Spanish. By using content analysis methods, this study compares the information provided by using different

languages and the required knowledge and educational level to understand the information provided.

The initial results show that information is difficult to find and understand, producing a wider gap on how Americans access health information that places Latinos at a disadvantage.

Los retos más importantes que los latinos enfrentan en el tema de la salud son la obesidad, problemas cardiovasculares y la diabetes. Sin lugar a duda las cifras de los Latinos son de mucha mayor proporción en comparación con el resto de la población estadounidense. Es así que las agencias de salud federal y estatal han aumentado la información compartida en las redes sociales; y algunos de estas redes incluso proporcionando esta información en Español. Sin embargo, la información es escasa e infrecuente dando mucho que desear en cuestión al consumo de la información. Este estudio examina los sitios en Internet en Inglés y Español utilizados por los organismos a través las redes sociales para difundir información sobre prácticas preventivas. Mediante el uso de métodos de análisis de contenido, este estudio compara la información proporcionada a través del uso de diferentes idiomas, el nivel de conocimiento y el nivel educativo requerido para entender la información proporcionada. Los resultados iniciales muestran que la información es difícil de encontrar y entender, produciendo una brecha más amplia en como el acceso a la información de los estadounidenses pone en desventaja a los latinos.

THE INFLUENCE OF PERCEIVED DISCRIMINATION ON U.S. LATINOS’ EVALUATION AND CONSUMPTION OF NEWS MEDIA Vinicio Sinta, University of Texas at Austin Federico Subervi, Kent State University

Building on the marketplace model of news consumption and social identity theory, the present study uses 2012 survey data to assess whether U.S. Latinos’ perception of discrimination against their ethnic group, influences their evaluations of credibility and cultural relevance of Englishand Spanish- language news, as well as how these evaluations relate to their language of choice for the consumption of news on different platforms.

Basándose en el modelo de mercado de consumo de noticias y la teoría de la identidad social, el presente estudio utiliza datos de una encuesta del 2012 para evaluar la percepción discriminatoria de los Latinos en los Estados Unidos en contra de su propio grupo étnico. De ahí que se desea conocer, la forma en la que esta percepción discriminatoria influye la evaluación de la credibilidad, y la pertinencia cultural por las noticias en Inglés-Español. This publishing project aims to explore issues related to the Hispanic cinema, convinced that Latin America has much to offer to the world. “Cinégrafo” seeks to transcend the boundaries of traditional formats to present opinions and research about viewers of current cinema. Its first issue is dedicated to the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, an unforgettable period not only for Mexicans, but for many Latin Americans who received intensive emotional education through the films produced during that period.

“Cinégrafo” es una propuesta editorial novedosa sobre temática fílmica, impresa en un formato doble, con un atractivo diseño visual, de un lado es cartel y se puede colocar sobre algún muro, por el otro lado es una revista que juega con distintos géneros periodísticos y literarios. Con el pleno convencimiento de que Iberoamérica tiene mucho que ofrecer al mundo, este proyecto editorial tiene como propósito explorar temáticas relacionadas con el cine hispano. “Cinégrafo” busca trascender las fronteras de los formatos tradicionales para dar a conocer opiniones e investigaciones de audiencia sobre los espectadores de cine actuales. En esta ocasión se presenta el primer número dedicado a la Época Dorada del Cine Mexicano, un periodo inolvidable para el imaginario colectivo no sólo del mexicano, sino de muchos latinoamericanos que recibieron una intensiva educación sentimental a través de las películas producidas durante dicho periodo.

DIGITIZATION OF FILM EXHIBITION IN SPAIN: SMALL CINEMAS AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY Asier Aranzubia, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, España

As in many other parts of the world, 2014 was a turning point for the cinema exhibition sector in Spain. It was the year that Hollywood industry had finally moved to the digital format, discontinuing the production of old analog system films. This decision has forced theater owners around the world to digitize their infrastructure in order to enable them to continue displaying mainstream cinema.

While movie theater chains operating in Spain, such as Cinesa, Kinepolis, Helm, and UGC, have not faced serious problems in adapting their multiple cinema complexes to digital, independent movie theaters, however, have found many obstacles (especially financial) in making the transition to the new business model. Small movie theaters, those with one or two screens, and movie theaters located in rural areas are the most affected. In fact, today in Spain there are still several hundred screening rooms of this type that have failed to undertake this conversion and may be forced to close. The worst matter is that if these screening rooms ultimately disappear, the cultural diversity of the cinema exhibition sector in Spain would be severely affected.

Al igual que en otros muchos lugares del mundo, 2014 ha sido un año decisivo para el sector de la exhibición cinematográfica en España. Ha sido el año en el que Hollywood ha dado el salto definitivo al modelo digital, en consecuencia, dejando de producir películas en el antiguo sistema analógico.

Esta decisión ha obligado a los cines de todo el mundo a digitalizar sus infraestructuras, para poder así, seguir exhibiendo ese cine mainstream del que en buena medida depende la viabilidad del negocio de la exhibición cinematográfica en la actualidad. Si bien las grandes cadenas de exhibición que operan en España (Cinesa, Kinépolis, Yelmo, y UGC) no han tenido graves problemas a la hora de adaptar sus multiplexes y megaplexes al modelo digital, los cines independientes, en cambio, se han encontrado muchas dificultades (sobre todo de financiación) para acometer la reconversión de sus negocios. Y de entre la variada tipología de salas que conforman el sector en España, los que más problemas han tenido han sido los cines pequeños (los que cuentan con una o dos pantallas) y los cines ubicados en zonas rurales. Es así que hoy en día, todavía hay en España varios cientos de salas de este tipo que no han conseguido acometer la mencionada reconversión, y se pueden ver obligadas a cerrar. Lo más grave del asunto es que si finalmente desaparecen estas salas, la diversidad cultural de la exhibición cinematográfica en España se verá seriamente perjudicada.

THE RESTORATION OF CINEMATOGRAPHY: A WAY OF PRESERVING HISTORICAL FILMOGRAPHY IN MEXICO Maribel Socorro Ruiz Luna, Universidad Justo Sierra, Mexico

In Mexico, it is important to have a conservation of filmic material nationwide, since that leads to examining historical data that helps the study of society, culture, and traditions. The Cineteca Nacional of Mexico holds the only film restoration laboratory in Latin America. However, it is necessary to discuss how its restorers, responsible for bringing back to life deteriorated tapes, must have methodological and rigorous training in order to exercise film restoration better. This study explores film restoration in Mexico, and the value of the restorers’ work who restore films that, due to the passage of time, have suffered damage, deterioration or loss. It is particularly noteworthy that through empirically learned methods, they achieve the reconstruction or recovery of numerous film materials, which show cinema and social history and may even be considered cultural heritage.

En México, la conservación de material fílmico es de importancia nacional ya que gracias a él podemos observar y estudiar la historia de la sociedad, su cultura y tradiciones. La Cineteca Nacional posee el único laboratorio de restauración cinematográfica en toda América Latina, y en ella trabajan los restauradores encargados de devolverles la vida a aquellas cintas que se encuentran en deterioro. Sin embargo, es importante mencionar que hoy en día los restauradores carecen de rigor metodológico en el ejercicio de la restauración fílmica, y es necesario por lo tanto, una especialización en este ámbito de la restauración. El tema de esta ponencia es sobre la importancia de la restauración cinematográfica en México; labor que permite reconstruir películas que, debido al paso del tiempo, han sufrido un deterioro o incluso pérdida. Este trabajo plantea que solo por medio de métodos empíricamente establecidos y aprendidos se puede lograr la reconstrucción o recuperación de los materiales fílmicos, considerados patrimonio cultural.

MEXICAN YOUTHS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS FILMS: ACTIVE OR PASSIVE SPECTATORS? Jazmín López, Universidad Justo Sierra, Mexico

This analysis aims to present the results of an investigation whose general objective was to recognize the elements involved in the reception of national films by young Mexican viewers. Through a theoretical analysis of a reception of a corpus, composed of films corresponding to three critical periods of Mexican cinema, the study focuses on identifying passive or active attitudes during consumption. The central target of this research is the Mexican viewer, particularly young Mexicans (18-25 years) who live on the north side of Mexico City and the Metropolitan area. The study is structured as follows: 1) Anatomy of the film spectator, where the emergence and development of the subject who identifies with the situations shown in the films is addressed. 2) Theory of film reception, especially from the study of the effects, audience and consumer circles. 3) A general approach to three important periods of Mexican cinema: National Golden Era, Ficheras Films, and Mexican New Film Movement.

Esta exposición tiene como propósito presentar los resultados de una investigación cuyo objetivo general fue distinguir los elementos que intervienen en la recepción del cine nacional desde el punto de vista del joven espectador mexicano. A través de un análisis de recepción, en un corpus integrado por filmes correspondientes a tres períodos decisivos de la cinematografía mexicana, las actitudes pasivas y/o activas durante el proceso de consumo fueron observadas. El objeto central de esta investigación fue el espectador de cine, específico, jóvenes mexicanos de entre 18 a 25 años, habitantes del Norte del D.F en la Zona Metropolitana. Es por ello que la estructura de esta ponencia se ha organizado en tres partes: a) Anatomía del Espectador de cine; donde se aproxima al surgimiento, y el desarrollo del sujeto que se identifica con las situaciones mostradas en los filmes; b) la teoría de la recepción cinematográfica, específicamente desde el estudio de los efectos de la audiencia y el círculo de consumo; c) y una aproximación general a los tres periodos importantes de la cinematografía mexicana, (1) el cine de Oro Nacional, (2) el cine de Ficheras; y (3) el Nuevo cine Mexicano.

This paper examines the current state of ownership of Spanish-language media in the United States by focusing on several different media sectors: television stations, television networks, radio stations, newspapers, and magazines. In almost all sectors, the analysis reveals that major media companies and key Spanish language individual properties are not owned by Latinos/Hispanics, but by larger corporations that operate in the general market. Factors behind this pattern of ownership are discussed, along with recent policy decisions to try and improve the percentage of minority ownership in the United States, especially for Hispanics/Latinos.

En este trabajo se analiza el estado actual de la titularidad de los medios de comunicación en español en los Estados Unidos, centrándose en diferentes sectores, tal y como: estaciones de televisión, cadenas de televisión, emisoras de radio, periódicos y revistas. En casi todos los sectores, el análisis revela que las principales compañías de medios de comunicación en el idioma español no son propiedad de Hispanos/Latinos, sino de las grandes empresas que operan el mercado general.

Este estudio discuten los factores detrás de esta tendencia, junto con las recientes decisiones políticas que intentan mejorar el porcentaje de participación de minorías en los Estados Unidos, especialmente Hispanos/Latinos.

U.S. SPANISH-LANGUAGE TELEVISION MANAGEMENT DURING THE INDUSTRY’S FIRST 50 YEARS Kenton T. Wilkinson, Texas Tech University Daniela Contreras Diaz, Texas Tech University

Many people were stunned to learn that the Spanish-language television network Univision was the highest rated in primetime among all U.S. networks in July 2013, a feat it repeated a year later. Steady growth of its demographic and advertising bases combined with astute management has brought success to this dynamic industry sector. However, several decades of formidable challenges and lean periods preceded the boom years. Throughout the more than 50-year history of the Spanish-language television industry in the United States, network management has faced challenges to the growth, stability, and even survival of its enterprises. Such trials have come in irregular waves, typically associated with economic fluctuations, regulatory developments, industry changes or technological shifts. This study identifies the most salient challenges and examines how management responded at the two principal Spanish-language television networks based in the U.S.: Univision and Telemundo.

Muchas personas se sorprendieron al enterarse de que la cadena de televisión en español Univision fue la que alcanzó el rating más alto, en horario estelar, entre todas las cadenas de Estados Unidos en julio de 2013, una hazaña que se repitió un año después. El crecimiento constante de sus consumidores, su base demográfica y publicitaria, combinado con una gestión inteligente, le han traído el éxito a este sector industrial tan dinámico. Sin embargo, las tantas décadas de enormes desafíos y los períodos de escasez, han precedido los años de bonanza. A lo largo de más de 50 años de historia en la industria de la televisión en Español, la gestión de las cadenas televisiva se ha enfrentado a desafíos de crecimiento, estabilidad, e incluso la supervivencia de sus empresas . SPANISH LANGUAGE COMMUNITY PRESS CONTINUES THE LEGACY OF EL MISSISSIPPI Edna Negron, Ramapo College of New Jersey

The explosive growth of Latinos in the South in the last two decades has given rise to local Spanish language media. The advocacy role of community newspapers, such as Que Pasa-Mi Gente in Charlotte, North Carolina, mirrors the mission of the very first Spanish language newspaper, El Misisipi, launched in 1808 in New Orleans. That mission aimed to unite Latino immigrants living in the South during a time of political turmoil, to preserve their language, culture and to promote their advancement in a new land. This research focuses on Que Pasa-Mi Gente’s immigration coverage in 2014, a year of renewed calls for immigration reform and the 20th anniversary of the paper’s service to Charlotte. By way of field interviews and content review, this research shows how the 21st century role of a local Spanish language newspaper in the New South has virtually remained the same after 200 years.

El explosivo crecimiento de los Latinos en el sur durante las últimas dos décadas, ha dado lugar al crecimiento de medios locales de comunicación en español. La función de la prensa comunitaria, tales como “Que Pasa - Mi Gente” en Charlotte, Carolina del Norte, reflejan la misión del primer periódico en español, El Misisipi, creado en 1808 en Nueva Orleans. Su misión tenía como objetivo unir a los inmigrantes Latinos que vivían en el sur durante la época de agitación política, ayudando a preservar su idioma, su cultura y promoviendo su desarrollo en un territorio nuevo. Esta investigación se centra en la cobertura del periódico “Que Pasa -Mi de Gente” en los temas de inmigración en el 2014; año en el que surgieron nuevas demandas para la reforma migratoria, y durante el cual el periódico en Charlotte celebró su 20vo aniversario. A modo de entrevistas de campo y revisión de contenido, esta investigación muestra el rol de la prensa comunitaria en español en el sur de E.U, y como esta, en pleno siglo XXI, se ha mantenido prácticamente intacta después de 200 años.

One of the few Mexican characters who transcend time, to the extent of becoming an idol and icon of Mexican culture, was Pedro Infante (1917-1957 ). Although it has been 58 years since his death, caused by a plane crash, Infante is still remembered. He was an actor who appeared in more than 50 Mexican films, a singer who interpreted songs now part of traditional Mexican folk music, and he was the desirable man that every woman wanted to be with. This paper presents the results found in research conducted through interviews made in ​​ Mexico City and determines the impact, relevance and importance of Pedro Infante, the idol of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.

1957), nacido en Mazatlán Sinaloa, México. A pesar de que ya han pasado 58 años de su muerte, provocada por un accidente de avioneta, Infante aún es recordado por ser un actor que participó en más de 50 películas mexicanas, por ser intérprete de grandes temas musicales, que aún siguen vigentes en el imaginario colectivo, y además, por ser causante de suspiros, fantasías e idolatría entre miles de mujeres. Por tal motivo, este trabajo presenta los resultados de una investigación realizada a partir de entrevistas elaboradas en las calles de la Ciudad de México, acerca del impacto, vigencia e importancia de este representante del Cine de Oro Mexicano.

THE ROLE OF COMEDY IN MEXICO’S GOLDEN AGE OF CINEMA Yair Alberto Hernandez Rubio, Universidad Justo Sierra, Mexico

The Golden Era of Cinema was a time of growth in the movie industry in Mexico and it marks not only the bloom of romance and melodrama but also comedy. The breakthrough for Mexican comedy came with characters such as Tin Tan, Cantinflas, Viruta y Capulina, and Piporro. Although, no one as iconic as Cantinflas, whose real name was Mario Moreno. Moreno offered a different type of film than other commercial films creating a new form of urban comedy. The genre of Cantinflas’ comedy rapidly increased its popularity bringing not only a new idol, but also a new culture into the Mexican cinema.

This project studied the impact of comedy in the golden age of Mexican cinema, identifying the impact it had in mexican history, culture and behavior. In particular, the study explored the role Cantinflas played, as an awe-inspiring comedian, on Mexican and other Latin America viewers.

La era de Oro del Cine Mexicano, fue el inicio de una época de esplendor no solo en los géneros del melodrama y romance, sino también en el de la Comedia. Grandes nombre surgieron durante este tiempo de esplendor, entre las cuales figuran, Tin-tan, Cantinflas, Viruta y Capulina, y Piporro, por mencionar algunos. De entre ellos, el más impactante en la cultura mexicana es el personaje de Cantinflas, representado por Mario Moreno. Moreno trae con su personaje una forma nueva con estilo urbano de hacer comedia, abriendo así, las puertas a otro género en el cine mexicano. La comedia de Cantinflas rápidamente creció en popularidad creando historia y arte en México. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo analizar el impacto de la comedia en el cine de la Época de Oro; y en particular, explorar el papel que Cantinflas juega en la vida de las audiencias en México y Latinoamérica.

THE MEXICAN CINEMA VIEWERS CONFRONT THE SUBJECT OF DEATH María Esther Chamosa Sandoval, Universidad Justo Sierra, Mexico

The constant co - dependency between life and death, from a biologist point of view, could be simple to understand, but maybe not so easy to accept. Cinema as representation of human multiplicity confers different emotions, passions, sorrows and aspirations of human beings. For this reason, film spectators feel identified with situations or characters, possibly thanks to a bioanthropo-psycho cultural connection. Through a survey of 1200 Mexican university students, it was detected that the most painful scene that provoked tears was the death of a loved one. Also, it was observed that life is the most valuable asset and death the most feared among young people. The researchers collected qualitative data, direct interviews, group discussions and measurements of vital signs during the projection of death scenes. The study found that scenes where the father, the mother or the couple dies, generate a strong impact, both psychological and physical, due to cultural constructions that conceive death as a negative event.

La co-dependencia permanente entre la vida y la muerte, desde un punto de vista biologicista, podría ser muy sencilla de comprender, pero no tan fácil de aceptar. El cine, como representación de la multiplicidad humana, muestra diversas emociones, pasiones, tristezas y aspiraciones del ser humano, logrando así, que el filmo-espectador se identifique con situaciones o personajes de la película; posible desde un contacto bio-antropo-psico-cultural. A partir de un sondeo realizado con 1,200 universitarios mexicanos, se detectó que el suceso fílmico más doloroso, y que más provoca el llanto, es la muerte de seres queridos. Igualmente, se pudo observar que lo más preciado por los jóvenes es la vida, y aquello más temido es la muerte. Para complementar este dato cuantitativo de manera interdisciplinaria, se realizaron entrevistas directas, grupos de discusión, y mediciones de signos vitales durante la proyección de escenas de muerte. Con lo anterior se comprobó que aquellas escenas donde muere el padre, la madre, o la pareja generan una marcada “afectación,” tanto a nivel psicológico como orgánico; esto producto de construcciones culturales que conciben a la muerte como un suceso negativo.

This study includes interviews with Latino consumers who participate by sharing their traditional family preferences related to the Hispanic market. In a world culturally globalized, bilingualism or multilingualism is not an option, but a requirement for Multicultural Marketing.

The Hispanic consumer is culturally loyal to his shopping habits. In the United States, the Hispanic generation of parents or grandparents controls the purchasing power; they determine what is bought and consumed in their family. Spanish language is the preferred language of this generation that conducts their financial activities, and it is essential for successful multicultural marketing.

Esta presentación incluirá ayudas audiovisuales de entrevistas a consumidores latinos. La audiencia participa compartiendo sus preferencias familiares y tradiciones relevantes al mercado Latino. En un mundo culturalmente globalizado, el bilingüisguismo o multilingüismo no es una opción sino un requisito indispensable para el mercadeo multicultural. El consumidor Latino es culturalmente leal a sus tradiciones y hábitos de consumo. Este trabajo analiza el desarrollo del discurso publicitario, tanto en su modalidad escrita como visual, dirigida a los hispanos en los Estados Unidos durante la última década. El objetivo de este recorrido por el tiempo es escudriñar la evolución, si la hay, que se ha dado en la publicidad en español dirigida a hispanos que viven en los Estados Unidos. La meta es identificar si la imagen del hispano y el uso de su idioma, desde el punto de vista del publicista y anunciante, ha evolucionado o sigue estancada; esto desde el punto de vista de las percepciones negativas sobre la población Latina. Un análisis exhaustivo de la retórica de las imágenes y la gramática del español, nos permitirá́ alcanzar la meta de nuestro trabajo.

THE CULTURAL IDENTITY AND CONSUMER BEHAVIOR OF THE HISPANIC MILLENNIAL: INDIVIDUALISM VS. COLLECTIVISM, MASCULINITY VS. FEMININITY, AND BRAND LOYALTY EXPLORED Neleen Leslie, Florida State University

Hispanic Millennials have been recognized as a very important market segment to the growth of brands today. While previous research has looked at trends in Hispanic Millennials’ consumption, we have yet to delve into the values and motivations that may be driving their behavior. This study examines the cultural values and consumer behavior of Hispanic Millennials. It compares Hispanic Millennials to older Hispanics on two of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions: Masculinity versus Femininity and Individualism versus Collectivism. It also compares Hispanic Millennials’ brand loyalty to older Hispanics. Results indicated that Hispanic Millennials were significantly more collectivist and masculine than their older counterparts but did not display significantly higher brand loyalty. It was also found that there were no significant differences in Brand loyalty, Masculinity versus Femininity and Individualism versus Collectivism when Hispanic Millennials who preferred English were compared to Hispanic Millennials who preferred Spanish.

Hoy en día, estudios han reconocido las tendencias en el consumo del hispano del Nuevo Milenio considerándolo uno de los segmentos de la población más importantes para el crecimiento de las marcas. Sin embargo, todavía tenemos que profundizar sobre los valores y motivaciones que podrían estar impulsando este comportamiento. Este estudio examina los valores culturales y los hábitos de consumo de los Hispano del Nuevo Milenio, y compara este segmento con los Hispanos adultos mayores en dos de las dimensiones culturales de Hofstede: La Masculinidad versus Feminidad; y el Individualismo versus Colectivismo. También compara la lealtad de la marca de los Hispano del Milenio con la de los Hispanos adultos mayores. Los resultados indicaron que los Hispano del Nuevo Milenio son significativamente más Colectivistas y Masculinos que sus colegas adultos mayores, sin embargo no mostraron un nivel mayor o distinto en relación a la lealtad a la marca. Adicionalmente, se constató que no hubo diferencias significativas en la lealtad a la marca cuando: la masculinidad vs. Feminidad; y el Individualismo vs. Colectivismo fueron comparados entre los Hispanos del Milenio que prefieren comunicarse en Inglés versus los que prefieren hacerlo en español.

The media have been considered a power factor as it is one of the most effective ways to reach target audiences. As information will always be structured to reach the collective thinking, many people make decisions based on the media. Given the newest media trends and platforms, the radio must reinvent itself forming alliances to create a consolidated communications system to reach the modern target audience. This research explores Colombia’s radio programming and the phenomena of media convergence to understand and determine the challenges posed by the digital environment.

Los medios de comunicación han sido considerados un factor de poder efectivo cuando sus objetivos coinciden con los de la audiencia. De esta forma, la información siempre debería de estar estructurada para llegar a la preferencia colectiva, y con base en ella, influir en la toma de decisiones.

Dada la convergencia actual de los medios y plataformas, la radio debe reinventarse y aliarse a los otros medios del grupo al cual pertenece para conformar un sistema único de comunicaciones en forma armónica y sincrónica, y de esta forma llegar al público de manera que se cumplan unas funciones que no son opuestas sino paralelas y complementarias.

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PRIMETIME PROGRAMS IN GENERAL RADIO BROADCASTING IN ARGENTINA AND SPAIN 2013: WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM AUDIENCES BEHAVIOR María del Pilar Martínez-Costa Pérez, Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona, España María José Müller, Universidad Austral, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Over the last thirty years, the program “Magacín” has been established as the powerhouse of the mainstream radio. It had reached the biggest audience and has become the longest-running program in the scheme of production slots. Magacín is a marathon program that offers between three and six broadcast hours, and it is often referred to as a program of varied content. It has a constant and coherent structure led by a presenter with great communication skills. Through the analysis of mainstream radio audience data in Argentina and Spain, this study compares the behavior of four leading prime time programs, determining similarities and differences. The study describes the formal and narrative features of each program, then compares cumulative audience, audience by hours, market shares, audience profile, etc., of each program. The purpose of this analysis is to describe the turning point in the way that mainstream radio has been presented during its prime program “Magacín, in order to observe what trends could be applied to other radio markets.

A lo largo de los últimos treinta años, el programa magacín se ha constituido como la columna vertebral de la oferta de la radio generalista, alcanzando las mayores cuotas de audiencia y convirtiéndose en el programa de más larga duración en el esquema de franjas horarias de la producción. El magacín es un programa maratón que se ofrece actualmente a los oyentes, ocupando

entre tres y seis horas de la emisión por término medio de minutado. Se le conoce con frecuencia como un programa de contenidos variados pero de estructura reiterativa y coherente convenientemente construida por un presentador con grandes capacidades comunicativas. Mediante el análisis de los datos de audiencia de la radio generalista en Argentina y España, este estudio se propone a comparar el comportamiento de las audiencias de los 4 programas líderes del prime time para descubrir las similitudes y diferencias de dos mercados radiofónicos de referencia en el mundo hispano. Para ello, primero se describirán las características formales y narrativas de cada programa, para luego comparar la audiencia acumulada, la audiencia por horas, las cuotas de mercado, el perfil de la audiencia, tiempo de escucha acumulado, etc. de cada uno de los programas. Con todo ello, se propone describir el momento de cambio en la forma de contar de la radio generalista en el que ha sido hasta ahora su programa estrella, el magacín, con el fin de vislumbrar tendencias que luego puedan aplicarse a otros mercados de la radio.

ALTERNATIVE FINANCING OF RADIO AND AUDIO PROJECTS THROGH CROWDFUNDING: NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR DIVERSITY Juan Ignacio Gallego, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, España Manuel Fernández-Sande, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España

The current change in power relations and funding of cultural industries are changing the status quo set in the twentieth century. The paradigm shift affects the diversity of sources, broadcasters, content and user consumption. These changes alter the production, distribution and consumption of radio and audio content. Crowdfunding represents an important redefinition of radio consumption, hence new forms of interaction and audience participation. Conventional risk and investing models have changed as a result of crowdfunding that introduce to audiences a new option for distribution and funding of different types of projects. This study analyzes the viability and sustainability of the crowfunding system, focusing on its value chain. It explores what role audiences play in the crowfunding model, examines whether a new risk paradigm has emerged, and responds to the question: Is crowfunding generating innovative radio and audio projects that are sustainable over time?

La actual situación de cambio en las relaciones de poder y financiación de las industrias culturales están cambiando el status quo definido durante el siglo XX. El cambio de paradigma afecta a la diversidad de las fuentes, los difusores, los contenidos y de los consumos de los usuarios. Estos cambios afectan, como no podría ser de otra manera, a producción, la distribución y el consumo de los contenidos sonoros y radiofónicos. A partir de las nuevas formas de interacción y participación de las audiencias, el crowdfunding (o micromecenazgo) supone una importante redefinición alrededor del consumo radiofónico, un medio tradicionalmente gratuito.

Session 8.2 – Room 2600 TOURISM IN THE NEW MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY: A CROSS-CULTURAL STUDY OF FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE WHERE PEOPLE TRAVEL FOR LEISURE Katherine Cook, Florida State University

The 2013 FSU “Research Now” Multicultural Marketing Study explored the attitudes, media habits, and opinions about shopping and other-related topics of people of diverse backgrounds. This project focused primarily on the travel section of the study. Respondents were asked to indicate the most important factors that influenced where they chose to travel to for leisure in the twelve months prior to the survey. A detailed list of factors was provided ranging from having enjoyed a previous visit to wanting to brag on social media. Therefore, this project is a cross-cultural analysis of the most important factors that influence where people travel across different ethnic groups. This study used ANOVA and MANOVA analyses to compare variations amongst the four largest ethnic groups in the United States: Asian, African Americans, Hispanic, and Non-Hispanic Whites. The results indicated that there are statistical differences in the most important factors that influence where they travel amongst the four groups.

Durante una encuesta realizada por el Centro de Mercadeo Hispano en el 2013, se exploraron las actitudes, hábitos, y opiniones del consumidor multicultural. En específico, este proyecto se centró principalmente en la exploración de las variables asociadas con los destinos turísticos y/o de los lugares elegidos para visitar por los participantes. Durante la encuesta, se solicitó a los consumidores que indicaran las razones por las que ellos eligieron un destino para vacacionar durante el último año. Este proyecto, por lo tanto,representó un análisis transcultural de los factores más importantes que influyeron en la elección del destino turístico entre consumidores multi-étnicos en los Estados Unidos. Para analizar los resultados se utilizaron los métodos de análisis de ANOVA y MANOVA. Así se compararon las variaciones entre los cuatro mayores grupos étnicos en los Estados Unidos; siendo estos los Asiáticos, Afroamericanos, Hispanos y Caucásicos no-Hispanos. En resumen, los resultados indicaron que existen diferencias significativas entre los cuatro grupos en relación a los factores utilizados para elegir el destino turístico. Los detalles y las implicaciones de los resultados serán discutidos.

WHAT DO WE NOW ABOUT HISPANIC e-WOM? Howard Rodriguez, Florida State University

The body of research literature on e/WOM is decades long and has been frequently cited by researchers and practitioners alike. However, as comprehensive as it is, research on Latin@ e/WOM practices is scant by comparison. By using content analysis on hundreds of scholarly articles, this study identified Latin@-specific e/WOM practices and influencing factors, as well as gaps in the overall e/ WOM scholarly literature. The presentation of these findings will benefit practitioners and researchers alike.

La literatura de la investigación sobre la comunicación de boca en boca (en Inglés conocido como Word of Mouth, alias WOM), exitosamente utilizada por los consumidores Latinos, se extiende por décadas. El estudio de este (WOM) ha sido frecuentemente citado por los investigadores y profesionales por igual. Sin embargo, los estudios realizados sobre la comunicación electrónica de boca en boca utilizada por los Latino (eWOM Latino) aún es muy escasa en comparación con la extensa investigación del WOM. Mediante el uso de un meta-análisis, y utilizando el análisis de contenido, se estudiaron cientos de artículos académicos con el fin de identificar las prácticas más relevantes del eWOM Latino, es decir de la comunicación electrónica de boca en boca practicada a través de las redes sociales. De esta forma, las preguntas sin respuestas encontradas en publicaciones académicas sobre eWOM Latino son identificadas. Con esto, que esta presentación pretende destacar los resultados que benefician a profesionales e investigadores por igual.

COMMUNICATING SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY THROUGH THE WEB: COMPARING BETWEEN HISPANIC AND NON-HISPANIC ENERGY WEBSITES Wen Zhao, Florida State University

This study explored how leading Latino and non-Latino energy corporations communicate social responsibility through their corporations’ websites. Based on theory and premises in corporate social responsibility (CSR), this study compared the way Latinos and Non-Latinos around the globe communicate about their philanthropy and ethical business practices. Furthermore, this study tested for a correlation between CSR and financial performance. For the purpose of this study, a mixed method approach was used; data and content analyses were employed. Overall, the results showed a significant difference between Latino and non-Latino corporations’ websites in content and meanings toward CSR. That is, Latinos communicate CSR in different forms and to different extents. Findings across topics and categories are discussed along with managerial implications with illustrated examples drawn for a broader understanding of the cultural differences in CSR practices

Este estudio exploró cómo las principales empresas energéticas Latina y no Latinas difunden su responsabilidad social a través de los sitios web de sus corporaciones. Basado en teorías y premisas encontradas sobre el tema de responsabilidad social corporativa (RSC), se comparó la forma en la que los Latinos y no Latinos de todo el mundo comunican su misión filantrópica, así como sus las prácticas éticas comerciales. Además, este estudio probó a través de una correlación entre la RSC y los resultados financieros la relevancia de esta práctica. Para el propósito de este estudio, se utilizó un enfoque de método mixto empleando análisis de datos y de contenido. Los resultados mostraron una diferencia significativa entre los sitios web de las corporaciones Latinas versus las no Latinas; las formas de utilización de los contenidos y significados hacia la RSC son desiguales. Es decir, los latinos comunican la RSC en formas distinta y a diferentes escalas o niveles. Este estudio discute los resultados a través de varias categorías de RSC, y así, junto con las implicaciones gerenciales, se muestra ejemplos de los mensajes utilizados por algunos de los corporativos, esto con el fin de una mayor comprensión de las diferencias culturales en las prácticas de RSC.
