FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAM A letter from our Program Coordinator Hello friends of the Higher Education Program, 2020...What a year! Mid-semester transitions from in-person to online classes. National conferences getting canceled or going virtual. Practicum, internships, and assistantships rapidly reimagined. A divisive national election. Persistent police violence and anti-black racism. A world-wide pandemic that has killed a quarter-million Americans and disrupted nearly every aspect of our lives. Yet, amid all that, the FSU Higher Education Program continues to thrive. We have welcomed a great new cohort of students (and graduated quite a few students too!), published dozens of articles, and won major national awards. As we head into winter break, I hope you will take a moment to read about the program's newly adopted land acknowledgement, learn more about the online Ed.D., and join our celebration of faculty and students who have been honored by our field this year. PROGRAM NEWS Program Updates
PROGRAM INTERNSHIPS We have seen a lot of talented students come through the higher education program. We want to utilize our students' areas of expertise and we are making a commitment to hold an internship in every semester for which we offer our Internship course. Spring semester has traditionally held a Visiting Days intern. Our new summer and fall semester interns will work towards recruitment and retention of graduate students through online engagement. Fall Intern: Charlotte Hayes Class of 2021 Hello FSU Higher Ed friends. My name is Charlotte Hayes and I am a current second year in the master̢۪s program. Before arriving at FSU, I attended Virginia Tech for my Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages: Classical Studies. Last year my assistantship with University Health Services and this year my assistantship is with Advising First. My internship this fall semester has been as the Recruitment Intern for the Higher Education Program. In this internship, I am responsible for the program̢۪s social media posts, co-hosting Livestream recruitment events, and creating recruitment videos. It has been a great experience to learn more about how the program works and getting to engage with prospective new students. This is the first semester this position has existed and I am super excited to see what future students in the position do!
EDUCATION DOCTORATE FSU's Higher Education program has long offered a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.), and our Ed.D. alumni have made countless contributions to their own institutions and the field at large. As the landscape of higher education has evolved, so too has our Ed.D. By transitioning from a face-to-face program to a higher education pathway within the department's online Ed.D, in Educational Leadership & Policy, we are able to maintain the program's rigor while increasing student access. This pathway highlights higher education as a central component to the larger system of education and helps expose students who may have had K-12 as their focus to think about the system as a whole. This expansion of both access and scope helps ensure that FSU's Ed.D. graduates remain well positioned to lead systemic improvements throughout the field of education.
Ed.D. alumni are an import part of our program and we will now have an online pathway to a higher education-focused Ed.D.
