FROM THE DEAN When the College of Fine Arts launched the Dean’s Society last fall, we wanted to create a community that recognized and honored our most dedicated donors. Your gifts to the College of Fine Arts – whether to the College Greatest Needs or to one of our departments enable us to offer student scholarships, award faculty research grants, recognize exceptional teaching, and support activities across the College. In thanks for all you do, this Year-inReview features highlights of the award-winning departments, new programs, and student excellences that your gifts have supported.

It has been an amazing year in the College of Fine Arts! Our faculty have received more grant funding than ever before and they are traveling all over the world to present their scholarly and creative work. We will have 22 new faculty members in our programs next year, which means that almost 20% of our teachers will be new to FSU. We have received almost $3M in new teaching resources to bring down the majority of our class sizes to fewer than 20 students per section. We’ve received almost $1.1M to upgrade facilities and technology. CFA students are excelling and being recognized by the University for outstanding achievement.

Our generous supporters have demonstrated their commitment to our good work by helping us raise over five million dollars to support our students and faculty. To cap off this banner year, we shook hands with over 237 of our students as they walked across the stage to receive their FSU degree in May. Wow, what a year!

But now we are turning our attention to next year. And we have big plans. On behalf of the College of Fine Arts, I want to thank you for your continued dedication. I look forward to seeing you at one of our events during the 2018/19 academic year.

Last year we launched several new programs within the College of Fine Arts to increase outreach, student participation, and stewardship opportunities.

Caffeine with the Dean is a monthly social for all CFA students to meet and mingle with their Dean and their fellow College classmates.

Celebrate! Student Awards and SIX Launch honored those students who have excelled in their programs, as well as acknowledge the College Leadership Council’s newest edition of SIX Magazine.

Our Dean’s Society Breakfasts highlight the College’s award winning programs while also engaging and connecting with our Dean’s Society members. We had such an exciting time launching these new programs, and look forward to seeing you at next year’s events.

THEATRE

The Musical Theatre Program was listed in the Top 10 of Playbill's Broadway Big 10!

FSU is among the 10 most represented colleges on Broadway for the 2017-2018 season.

ART DEPARTMENT

The Susan and Mark Messersmith Art Scholarship was established and endowed.

ART EDUCATION

Florida State University welcomed Second Lady Karen Pence to campus in September for the announcement of her new art therapy initiative, Art Therapy: Healing with the HeART.

INTERIOR ARCH & DESIGN

The Department of Interior Architecture + Design’s graduate program was ranked #1 by deans and chairs as the Most Admired program in the country, as reported by DesignIntelligence Magazine.

ART HISTORY

The Department of Art History hosted the 35th Annual Art History Graduate Symposium. Graduate students from across the country presented research on the history of art, architecture, and cultural heritage.

THEATRE

FSU/Asolo Conservatory ranked in the 25 Best Drama Schools for an Acting Degree

by Hollywood Reporter.

ART DEPARTMENT

Master of Fine Arts student Christina Klein, was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study painting and printmaking at the Academy of Arts in Nuremberg, Germany.

DANCE

The National Endowment for the Arts awarded FSU’s Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) a second round of funding for its FORWARD DIALOGUES (MFD) series.

FALL DEAN’S SOCIETY BREAKFAST

CELEBRATE!

The College of Fine Arts held its annual Student Award Ceremony and SIX Magazine Launch Party creating the first annual Celebrate! event. This event was a collaboration between the College of Fine Arts and the College Leadership Council to promote and recognize student excellence within the College.

The fall Dean’s Society Breakfast featured a guided tour of the exhibition “Kul’ttovary: Bringing Cultural Goods into the Soviet Home” by curator Dr. Yelena McLane, followed by the opportunity for guests to observe a dance class in Montgomery Hall.

SPRING DEAN’S SOCIETY BREAKFAST The spring Dean’s Society Breakfast featured a behind-the-scenes tour of the School of Theatre’s musical comedy, The Addams Family, with Director and BFA Music Theatre alum Jessica Lea Patty.

AN ART AFFAIR

This event established the Susan and Mark Messersmith Art Scholarship. Through the generosity of Mark and Susan Messersmith, their friends and hosts, Steve and Su Ecenia, and guests, the scholarship was awarded to two students in the spring of 2018.

DANCE

Through the generosity of the Belman Family and the FSU School of Dance, the Rodger Belman Fund in Dance has been endowed.

SHOWCASE

The College of Fine Arts hosted its first annual Dean’s Showcase of Student Achievement at the Augustus B Turnbull Conference Center.

Twelve outstanding students, both graduate and undergraduate, presented on a wide-range of topics to an audience of over 100 students, faculty, alumni, and friends. This event was held during Homecoming Weekend with the purpose of bringing together the greater FSU community to witness the breadth of interesting projects within the College of Fine Arts.

MUSEUM SARASOTA DEAN’S SOCIETY EVENT Our Sarasota Dean’s Society Reception featured a guided tour of the Ca’d’Zan with curator, Ron McCarty.

The Museum of Fine Arts received a gift of 99 David Levinthal Photographs. Levinthal’s work is included in the permanent public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many others.
