It is truly a great honor to serve as this year's President of the Faculty of Social Sciences Guild Committee. As we currently navigate through these unprecedented times, I encourage you all to remain focused and motivated to accomplish all your future aspirations. Rest assured that our team is committed to serving and enhancing your student welfare and overall university experience. On behalf of the Guild Committee, I am pleased to welcome both new and returning students to the Faculty of Social Sciences. As you embark on this monumental journey, I hope your lives will be transformed and that transformation will be made evident in your holistic development.

To all new students, congratulations on your matriculation. We are elated you have chosen the University of the West Indies, Mona, and more specifically, the Faculty of Social Sciences. I encourage you to take great advantage of this golden opportunity and make the most of your time here. Your university experience will be what you make it, and your opportunities will only be limited by the limits you place on yourself.

Throughout your tenure, there will be many challenges that will push you to your very limit, but in all that you do, it is of utmost importance to keep your mind and body focused on why you started this journey. Also, to our returning students, I applaud the work that you have done and now trust that you know what it takes to attain excellence as you learn from the past and continue to build on your success.

HOW TO CONNECT

WITH YOUR EXCELLENCE

It’s 5:45 Saturday morning, my alarm is beeping loudly, I reached over and turned it off. I slumped back onto my pillows, still feeling sleepy as if I had just gone to bed. I wanted badly to just lie here in the comfort of my bed. My mind started to wonder if only I could get 5 more minutes. I knew better than to entertain these thoughts as 5 minutes can turn into hours; resulting in me missing out on my early morning run.

Excellence is not an easy task, it takes hard work.

Even though excellence is within each and every one of us, we often “choose” to stay in the comfort of our beds. To be excellent you have to “choose” to step out of your comfort zone.

I thought to myself, I just need to get to the field, once I am there, everything else will go according to plan. I rolled out of bed, stretched, and started to get ready.

While getting ready, I reminded myself of my intentions to complete a minimum of 20 laps. I made it to the field and got out of my car. I looked up to the blue sky which had a scattering of white clouds. I'm here, the sun is on the rise, I could see its rays peeking through. There is a mild breeze that hits my face, I take in a deep breath and my lungs fill with fresh air. My sluggish body begins to feel more energized.

Thinking about your long-term goals can help to get you out of bed. To connect to your excellence, think about your long-term goals.

I scanned the breadth of the field, hmmm, 20 laps, this is beginning to feel more daunting. I started to have my doubts, I shook my head, trying to shake those thoughts from my head. I instead began to entertain the thought: “just one lap at a time” and let’s see where this goes. I leaned over and tightened the laces on my sneakers. I walked to the beginning of the track, squeezed the start button on my watch and started running.

To have doubts are pretty normal, they tend to show up when we set goals for ourselves. If we try to accomplish all our goals in one go, it can be intimidating and may affect our confidence. Instead, we should take our goals apart and make them become more manageable, that way they become easier to tackle. In order to connect with your excellence, shake off the doubts, face your goals fearlessly and proceed one step at a time.

I easily completed the first 5 laps, now I am on to 10 laps, now 15. I began to think that 15 is good enough, I can stop here. Though tempting, I decided to shake those thoughts. I got to 18, now I have my last two laps. This is my moment to give it my all. I call it my “Kobe Moment”, I used Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Mentality to motivate me. I rehearse in my mind over and over the word “dominate”. I feel fired up, with the lifting of my legs, the swinging of my arms, I use all of the energy I had left in me and gave it my best shot.

Excellence is not about complacency. It is about being resilient, digging deep and finding your inner strength. A role model can be helpful especially when we connect and try to imitate their strategies.

I made it to the end of my 20 laps, breathless, I hunched over, held on to my knees and tried to catch my breath. I hit my watch to see my time. My friend comes up beside me he says: “I am about to finish my last 5 laps; do you want to come join me?”. I looked up at him with the little energy I have and said to him: “Let’s do this!”

Connecting with your excellence means being extraordinary. You should always assess your accomplishments, knowing that you always have the potential to do better. It is the use of your unwavering determination and commitment, that helps you connect with your excellence.

disadvantage from the high and ever-present trade costs. The smaller Jamaican exporting firms with less exclusive products are likely to wither under pressure. However, if their more massive and experienced

counterparts

engage

them

strategically in a model of carry-along-trade, sizable export gains are likely to be a boon to both types of firms. Moreover, a greater focus from the WTO on reducing international trade costs are also likely to redound to the benefit of Jamaica firms, and hence, the Jamaican economy.

IDB STUDY FINDS GOJ COVID CARE PROGRAMMES WANTING The study, conducted in July this year, assessed the various government interventions implemented and offers recommendations on how the country can better manage the impact on the businesses community, particularly micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). It was led by The University of the West Indies Professor David Tennant and surveyed 390 nonfinancial businesses across all sectors and parishes.

The Flow Foundation is to roll out a $60 million national development pilot programme in support of digital education and entrepreneurship across Jamaica.According to Flow Foundation Chairman Stephen Price, many Jamaicans and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are being left behind amid the digital transformation.

PM NAMES HIGH LEVEL EDUCATION TRANSFORMATION COMMISSION Prime Minister Andrew Holness has named a 14-member high-level Commission on Education Transformation. It will be responsible for conducting a comprehensive review and assessment of Jamaica’s education system including its structure and operations. The Commission will also recommend action for change. Dean of FSS, David Tennant has been appointed as a member of the Education Transformation Commission.

Dr Lisa Ann Vasciannie, a lecturer at the Mona campus of the University of West Indies will participate in the discussion on “Key Electoral Trends Influencing the Last 40 Years,” scheduled for September 16.

She will be joined by speakers from Pakistan, Ghana, Nigeria and Papua New Guinea.

Phillips names new senators Leader of the Opposition Dr Peter Phillips today named Opposition members of the Senate who will serve in the Upper House of the nation's Parliament for the new legislative term.

The Opposition senators include Dr Floyd Morris, university lecturer and director of the Centre for Disability Studies at UWI.

JAMAICAN software development firms must aim for at least a tier-three ranking to be able to attract global contracts.The suggestion was made by researcher and lecturer in information systems quality at The University of the West Indies, Mona campus, Dr Delroy Chevers, who has assessed software development firms in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Guyana.

He says the Caribbean Community countries, based on international standards, are way behind countries like India, which is ranked at level five.
