We are investing, accelerating, and improving work satisfaction Dear customer, steel construction and the markets for metal and machine shop industries are still progressing with moderate order volumes, although demand is currently evening out. We will continue the development of our operations in many ways throughout the autumn.

We have invested in a new surface treatment line in Poland. The purpose is to double the production volumes of our Polish production facilities. The current production capacity is already in full use, and the new line will be commissioned in 2019. Growth in Poland has been strong, with our revenue nearly doubling each year since the foundation of our country office.

We are still going to invest in quick deliveries, because the production chain in the industry has been further speeding up. Steel constructors and the manufacturing industry must be able to react to tender requests very quickly and start designing and producing as soon as the order has been finalized. At the same time, the entire production chain must progress according to schedule. Quick reactions have already become a success factor in our industry.

We are still developing our strong culture and mode of operation. In the autumn, we will be starting a new development project with all of our personnel according to the spirit of Lean philosophy. The goal is to be able to implement all the best development ideas, to modify our work in ways that makes it more enjoyable, and to improve overall work satisfaction. The results of daily work will become visible to all. This will improve motivation, as anyone can have a say on the contents and outcomes of their work.

Dear reader, I would now like to recommend turning the page and reviewing our case stories and latest company news. In this issue, we are reporting for example on our versatile capabilities in serving our customers in Northern Finland at our surface treatment plant in Raahe, and on our flexible project expertise as applied to surface treatment contracts for bridges. We also present some innovative polyurea coatings at the Terrafame industrial area in Sotkamo, and our ability to offer almost completely dust-free wet blasting services and fireproof coatings.

Steel constructors in Northern Finland appreciate

quality, speed, and flexibility CASE

FSP OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES TO COMPANIES IN NORTHERN FINLAND AT BOTH THE MODERN RAAHE SURFACE TREATMENT PLANT AND AT PROJECT SITES. OUR STRENGTHS ARE GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE, SUPPLY SECURITY, AND QUICK DELIVERIES. The traditional Miilukangas Group and FSP have been cooperating closely at the Raahe surface treatment plant on the north-western coast of Finland for 15 years. The partnership has highlighted daily interactions, speedy deliveries, and a flexible culture of work, all abetted by geographical proximity.

FSP’s customers at Raahe include in addition to Miilukangas, other notable steel constructors as well, including the steel company SSAB, the machine shop company Telatek, and Presteel, manufacturer of heavy-duty pipes.

In addition to surface treatment plant services, FSP also actively carries out both small and large projects in the Northern Ostrobothnia region. Project sites include nuclear power plant constructions, lighthouses, ships, water towers, element beams, and lighting poles. ”Our strengths include willingness to provide a good service, supply security, and quick deliveries. We offer a comprehensive service to businesses of various sizes in Northern Finland, depending on their needs and according to high quality standards,” says Joni Siironen, Manager for FSP’s Raahe business unit.

According to CEO Pekka Miilukangas of the Miilukangas Group, the partnership has offered strong expertise in surface treatment as well as background organization, special treatment services when needed, and good knowledge of environmental requirements.

Added value via quality development Cooperation with Miilukangas started in 2003, when the company decided to outsource their surface treatment operations and chose FSP as their new partner. This is a decision they have not had to regret. ”We were personally responsible for the surface treatment operations of our machine shop since the 1970s, so we know that it takes a lot of expertise due to demanding contractors and the high quality standards of customers,” says CEO Pekka Miilukangas of the Miilukangas Group. ”We wanted to work with FSP because they are in possession of a wide professional network due to their surface treatment expertise, and because we know that we can generate additional value for surface treatment by developing quality.” ”This partnership offers us strong expertise in surface treatment as well as a background organization, special treatment services when needed, and good knowledge of environmental requirements and other authoritative regulations.”

Pekka Miilukangas has been a full-time employee at the family business since the 1980s. The roots of the Miilukangas Group, based in Raahe, go back 50 years to the time when Erkki and Anja Miilukangas, the parents of the current owner siblings, founded a business called

Saloisten Putkiliike. Since then, their operations have expanded from HPAC to housing construction and various sectors of the engineering shop and steel industries.

A desire to focus on core competence One of the most decisive reasons for the partnership was the goal of Miilukangas to focus on developing their own core competence and on facilitating growth conditions both at home and abroad. ”Our customers require quality, quick deliveries, and flexibility, so these are requirements for our partners as well. Offers need quick responses in this industry. Once the order has been confirmed, design must get going right away and the supply chain must work in a smooth and uncomplicated manner.”

The items currently processed in surface treatment are the steel structure products supplied by three companies in the Miilukangas Group, namely flow pipe operator Miilupipe Oy, steel service centre Miilux Oy, and the custom machine shop Miilumachine Oy. The treated items are typically individual steel parts, which are then moved down in the chain to assembly.

Miilux manufactures steel consumables for e.g. the mining industry, and Miilumachine produces machine parts for international machine manufacturers.

Miilukangas appreciates FSP’s long-term capability to invest in Raahe. Miilukangas and other companies in the Raahe region can now benefit from even more modern surface treatment expertise, as FSP opened a new surface treatment facility in the summer of 2017 on Kiiluntie in Raahe. The facility has excellent access to highway 8, so transporting even large components to and from surface treatment is easy and quick.

The new plant enables the surface treatment of even longer and heavier items. In total, the facility comprises some 1,400 square metres. Covered storage facilities make operations easier. The facility has a total lifting capacity of 25 tons. ”We believe that our cooperation will become even closer in the future, further improving our growth potential.

Cooperating with FSP means that low surface treatment capacities will never be a reason for work to not get done.”

New painting line to the factory in Poland CASE

The turnover has almost doubled annually The business growth in Poland has been remarkable: the turnover has almost doubled annually. With the new line investment there is more and more potential for growth. ”There are many large industrial companies in the country, so there is great potential for surface treatment. Many foreign and Finnish industrial companies have operations in Poland,” Huttunen says. ”The central location is one of the advantages of Poland, practically it serves the whole Europe. The surface treatment potential in Poland is at least five times greater than in Finland.”

The quality of the work is one of the key factors of success in Poland. FSP ensures employees' know-how and commitment. A tailored painting school will start this autumn. Employees who

have passed the training will receive a FSP certificate.

It points out that their professional skills pass the quality requirements agreed by FSP. ”In Poland my main task is to make sure that the growth is controlled and the pass through of investments succeed. Polish market is attractive, but it is good to not have your head in the clouds.”

In addition to Poland, Huttunen is responsible for the operational production in Finland and Estonia, as he did before moving to Poland. ”Due to the organizational change in the beginning of this year, I can change the focus of my work. It does not mean that the focus of the entire company will change. For example, we do not take the work from Finland to Poland but the business in Poland develops on its own. The new organizational model enables sharing of responsibility between myself and business unit managers.”

FSP is taking a new painting line into use in 2019, which doubles its capacity in Poland. ”There is potential in Poland. The potential for business growth in Poland and the chance of new experience interests me,” says Business Director Jarno Huttunen.

In the summer, he moved to Poznań, Poland. His assignment is to supervise the new line investment will be implemented and the business in Poland continues its great development.

FSP has been operating in Poland since 2010. The direction has been upbeat since the beginning. A new painting line was taken into use in Stargard Szczeciński in 2015. The entire production line is already running at full capacity, and a new investment decision was made this year.

Both paint shops are located in Stargard Szczeciński.

In the other paint shop the surface treatment is mainly done for the components for Cargotec and products for Hydroline Oy which is specialized in hydraulic solutions and cylinders. If needed, the paint shop also provides services for other customers in the region. In the other paint shop the surface treatment and sub-assembly service are done mainly for container handling equipment.

Plentiful resources

a strength in giant bridge renovations CASE

”We have been given notable and wide responsibilities concerning the surface treatment of bridges all over Finland. Our strengths have been our strong references, competitiveness and resources, which have enabled the realisation of extensive multi-stage surface treatment contracts,” says Project Manager Pasi Kovalainen of FSP. Surface treatment capabilities are enhanced in particular by FSP’s professional project staff and modern transportable equipment, which can be deployed quickly to any location specified by the customer, regardless of time or place. Surface treatments are always carried out in the best way possible, according to the site’s quality requirements and specifications.

In the autumn of 2018, FSP realised one of the year’s heaviest bridge projects in Vårdö, which is a municipality in the archipelago of Åland with less than 500 residents. The project target was a concrete-decked steel-frame beam bridge connecting the Vårdö and Mickelsö islands, built right next to the old decommissioned bridge. The concrete deck of the old bridge was in such a bad shape that renovation was ruled out of the question.

The main contractor, Graniittirakennus Kallio, had already begun the sizable waterway bridge project in early 2017. The demanding project has progressed rapidly stage by stage.

Indicative of the size of the project is the fact that the total weight of the steel components used in the 340-metre bridge is 800 tonnes.

DURING THE PAST YEAR, FSP HAS CARRIED OUT SEVERAL DEMANDING SURFACE TREATMENT PROJECTS FOR LARGE BRIDGES. AMONG THE PROJECT SITES ARE THE OUNASKOSKI RAILWAY AND ROADWAY BRIDGE IN ROVANIEMI, THE VÅRDÖ ROADWAY BRIDGE IN ÅLAND, THE FRIITALA ROADWAY BRIDGE IN ULVILA, AND THE KRAASELINSALMI RAILWAY BRIDGE IN KEMI.

Ruukki Construction Oy was responsible for the delivery and installation of the steel structures, transporting the steel segments by sea from mainland Finland and lifting them into place with a sea crane. Most of the segment welding was done at the Ruukki Ylivieska plant in Western Finland, and the rest at the port of Rauma.

An innovative bridge painting platform Ruukki chose FSP as their partner for the surface treatment of the steel bridge segments whose task was to paint the segments at Rauma port and on site in Vårdö. According to Project Manager Timo Raitila of Ruukki, FSP has been a reliable partner for a long time. He thinks that FSP’s strengths are quality, flexibility, and observing agreed schedules. phasises FSP’s environmental awareness and innovative approach to bridge projects. ”FSP utilised a bridge painting platform which made the surface treatment run smoothly over the waterways.

Our cooperation was smooth and close team-play,” says Raitila.

The bridge project was done over water, which meant that environmental protection was a key factor. All sandblasting waste was collected to keep it from spreading into the environment nearby.

The steel beams for the Vårdö bridge were durably treated by a multiple layer system, which will give them a lifespan of several decades without additional maintenance, even in seaside conditions. There were five 60 to 70 metre-long beams, each weighing over 200 tonnes. The new Vårdö bridge is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2018.

Reliability, competitiveness, and professional expertise The other notable surface treatment project in autumn 2018 took place in Western Finland, at the Friitala roadway bridge crossing the Kokemäenjoki river in Ulvila.

The target there was a concrete-decked steel beam bridge, which was built in the same way as the new Vårdö bridge: right next to the old, decommissioned bridge. The total length of the completed bridge will be approximately 136 metres and its width 15 metres.

The Friitala bridge, built in 1953, had fallen into disrepair so the decision was made to replace it entirely. The main contractor for the project was Kreate, and Ruukki was responsible for the manufacturing of the steel segments. The new bridge is a triple-span continuous composite beam bridge with a reinforced concrete deck slab cast on top of two main steel carrier beams.

Bridges treated by FSP during 2018

Environmental protection was a key factor when FSP was taking care of the surface finishing of the Kraaselinsalmi bridge in the Kemi Ajos area.

The Ruukki production facility in Ylivieska manufactured the steel beams with the deck slab reinforcements already in place during the push stage. Prefabricated steel elements by Ruukki enabled a tight project schedule.

When the frame was in place, the deck casting begun.

All surface structures, equipment and devices, as well as other foundations, were made and installed. FSP was responsible for the surface treatment of steel structures at the worksite.

According to Project Manager Aki Viiliäinen of Ruukki, FSP was selected for the Ulvila contract due its reliability, competitiveness, and solid expertise. ”We have utilised FSP’s know-how earlier for similar demanding bridge projects,” says Viiliäinen and states that work at Ulvila will be completed by the end of 2018.

Two bridge contracts in Lapland In the autumn of 2018, FSP was also contracted to take care of the surface treatment of the 70-metre Kraaselinsalmi bridge in Northern Finland. This is a steel railway bridge situated in the Kemi Ajos area that was in need of renovation.

The main contractor Destia Rail was responsible for the basic renovation of the bridge, built in 1930. They chose FSP as their surface treatment partner after a bidding competition. The main reasons for choosing FSP were good competitiveness, supply security, and the ability to observe agreed schedules.

Site Engineer Mika Tuokila of Destia Rail says that FSP was a natural choice, because the partners have collaborated closely in Lapland before. The surface treatment works at Rovaniemi will also be completed during the autumn, with Destia Rail renovating the nearly 400-metre Ounaskoski railway and roadway bridge. The Ounaskoski bridge will be open to traffic again by the end of 2018.

THE RAPIDLY GROWING MULTI-METAL COMPANY TERRAFAME PRODUCES NICKEL, ZINC, COBALT, AND COPPER FOR INTERNATIONAL MARKETS. FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, IT HAS UTILISED FSP’S VERSATILE SURFACE TREATMENT EXPERTISE AT THE SOTKAMO MINE METAL PLANT IN NORTHERN FINLAND. The partnership has included research and development, surface treatment projects, and polyurea coatings.

The cooperation began in 2016 with a comprehensive research and development project, during which FSP looked into developing a painting system for Terrafame at the Sotkamo production plant. Terrafame had earlier commissioned surface treatment services from various partners. ”In 2016, we started the research by placing test plates in the mine area that were either coated or painted with different painting systems. The following year we looked into how corrosion had affected the plates. Based on this test, we determined the best painting system to protect the steel structures of the Sotkamo mine and metals production plant from corrosion,” says Quality and Development Engineer Jukka Savilampi of FSP Finnish Steel Painting Oy. The research was initiated mainly by the diploma thesis of Terrafame’s Maintenance Designer Jani Räisänen, in which he investigated the effects of corrosion on steel structures. Terrafame’s Maintenance Development Engineer Joni Seilonen has also been involved in the project.

Improving the durability of production equipment In addition to research and development, FSP has also carried out some surface treatment projects at the Sotkamo production plant. These projects have involved the steel structures and thickening pools at the plant.

According to Räisänen, the goal is to improve the durability of the production equipment surfaces, thereby increasing the lifespan of structures and improving the manageability of lifecycle costs.

The Terrafame production equipment are used to produce nickel, zinc, cobalt, and copper, suitable for

example for the manufacturing of stainless steel, corrosion protection, and battery chemicals. The production process stages include mining and ore handling, bioleaching, and metal extraction.

Heavy corrosive stress ”Surface treatments are very important, because corrosion can progress rapidly, especially in severe climate conditions,” says Seilonen.

In addition to more traditional surface treatments, FSP has also carried out polyurea coatings for extreme conditions at the production plant. These special coatings have been applied to several thickening pools, each with a diameter of 30 metres.

According to Räisänen, the goal was to make the pools extremely wear-resistant, because the thickener pools are constantly filled with fluids and are therefore under humidity stress. Savilampi states that polyurea was a good choice here, because it can withstand being submerged very well and hardens quickly.

The strengths of polyurea are its durability and flexibility, which enable it to withstand wear and extreme stresses. It is also seamless and waterproof, making it an excellent water insulation material. The projects were carried out during the maintenance shutdown in the spring and over the summer of 2018. The work was done by FSP’s surface treatment professionals. ”So far our experiences have been positive and profitable. FSP’s Jukka Savilampi has been an excellent contact person with whom we have been able to review all projects. The quality of the work has been high all the way. Documentations and quality controls have been very good. There have been no deviations,” tells Räisänen. ”We have been able to stay on schedule and within the budget during our cooperation. We will keep working together in the future.”

Customer survey: highlighting the development of partnerships NEWS

strategies and the potential of appointed customer accounts. The perspective was that of the Blue Ocean Strategy.

According to respondents, markets are currently very healthy and investments are being made. As a consequence, the significance of surface treatment has increased. The most critical selection criteria for surface treatment partner were quality, flexibility, reliability, and environmental concerns.

Essential quality issues were durability and visuality, and flexibility was the essential issue for work and operations. The decisive production reliability issue is carrying out all works according to process, and in a planned and resolute manner. Accounting for environmental factors means operating in accordance with certified standards and the company’s environmental policy.

A positive aspect was that FSP’s customers are more willing to discuss the development of cooperation. One of the most important partnership aspects for customers were regular quarterly meetings.

The results also highlighted some clear targets for improvement which FSP will tackle next. We would like to thank our partners for providing valuable developmental feedback during the interviews.

FSP is perceived as the largest and leading actor in the field, with the best potential for hiring capable professionals. The company plays a strong and central role in their customerships. The level of satisfaction is raised especially by long-term expertise, management of day-to-day routines, capable managers, flexibility, smooth communications, and approachability.

These were the core results of FSP’s nationwide customer survey. The focus group for the survey consisted of strategic partners. A total of 24 decision-makers completed the survey during March–May of 2018.

The method of the survey was face-to-face interviews. The goal was to look into the effects of changing

FSP has been commissioned to paint forklift counterweights. The project involves 200 counterweights with weights ranging from 500 to 1500 tonnes. The surface treatment includes grinding, filling with putty, and visually impressive painting. Due to their power and speed, counterweight forklifts are typically used for the loading and unloading of heavy loads. The surface treatment was carried out at FSP’s Norsok-certified Järvenpää paintshop.

Ready for effective wet blasting!

NEWS

FSP is now offering their customers versatile wet blasting services via flexible, mobile equipment. Wet blasting is a cleaning method where any blasting material can be used, provided it is heavier than water. Such materials include sand and aluminum oxide. ”The blasting material is selected according to base material and purpose,” says Manager Henri Kiminki of FSP’s Uusimaa and projects business unit.

This method will effectively remove paint from steel, concrete, and stone surfaces, while also roughening the surface for coating. It is therefore a good method for many purposes. The benefits of wet blasting are its efficiency, low environmental impact, and versatility. ”Efficiency can be improved, because wet blasting uses less blasting material than traditional sand

blasting,” says Kiiminki. ”We are already experienced in wet blasting, so we know that it’s a good choice for sites where there are for example electric motors that could be damaged by dust.”

The method is quite friendly to the environment and even better in terms of occupational safety, because it generates only minor dusting. However, this does not eliminate the need for personal protective equipment.

The dust-free method decreases the need to protect the environment, which saves time and increases the cost-effectiveness of projects.

The method does not cause sparks, so it can be used in potentially explosive areas.

Fireproofing at an airport and in Kilpilahti NEWS

FSP has the ability to do fireproof coatings in a flexible manner thanks to mobile equipment. Fireproofing has become more common in the recent years due to authoritative regulations. Fireproofing is used to ensure that the temperature of a structure will not exceed its critical level during the required fire resistance period. It will also prevent fires from spreading, making it possible to shut down processes in a controlled manner, to evacuate personnel, and to enable the rescue personnel to operate in the area.

During the past year, FSP has received several fireproof coating projects. The sites have included both public facilities and industrial areas, where structures need to maintain their sufficient load-bearing capacity even during a fire.

One of the most interesting projects was related to the expansion of the Helsinki Airport, where fireproofing was applied to some of the load-bearing structures of the expanded terminal. The contract is connected to the largest investment program in the history of the airport.

A new central plaza and a new western wing will be opened there by the year 2019. Due to this gigantic new expansion, the airport can in the future serve up to 30 million passengers per year.

In Kilpilahti, Southern Finland, FSP was responsible for the fireproofing of load-bearing structures for oil refinery equipment. The Porvoo paintshop is EN 1090-certified, which proves that the certified party is responsible for the conformity of the product.

During the recent years, FSP has done several fireproof coatings in different industrial environments, such as the Neste oil refinery process pipeline, various data centres built in Finland recently, and the Volvo Penta factory in Gothenburg. In addition to fireproofing, more traditional corrosion protection projects have also been completed at these sites.
