Endurable piping for Congolese coast During the spring of 2015, the Technip shipyard in Pori completed subsea modules for which the requirements regarding the level of surface treatment quality were very high. The structures of the piping system carrying water, air, oil and other mediums were protected against corrosion caused by the salty sea water of the Atlantic Ocean.

ccording to Production Director Timo Kaskinen from Technip Offshore Finland Oy, the company building the subsea modules, top-quality surface treatment will be of essential importance in the maintenance of subsea modules for the decades to come. Kaskinen is in charge of subcontracting at Technip's Mäntyluoto shipyard in Pori.

"The surface of the piping must be endurable because it faces constant wear and tear in a harsh environment. In offshore destinations the cause of wearing is salty sea water," Kaskinen explains.

According to Kaskinen, top-quality surface treatment prolongs the lifespan and increases the maintenance interval of the subsea modules that will be placed just off the Congolese coast in Africa. In other words, the modules will not require any major maintenance operations during the coming decades.

In fact, quality was the key factor contributing to the fact that Technip chose

FSP as the main surface treatment partner in this project. The requirements to be met in the partner selection were extremely high because the project required particularly strict inspections and reporting.

"We chose FSP as our surface treatment partner because FSP uses a certified management system, has extensive experience of offshore structures and employs inspectors with Frosio qualifications," Kaskinen explains.

Close co-operation in Pori Due to the strict quality requirements of the project, Technip utilised FSP's surface treatment expertise which includes in particular Frosio inspections according to Norsok standards. During the project, all Norsok coating work was carried out in FSP's surface treatment facility in Pori, to which Technip delivered the module parts from its Mäntyluoto shipyard in Pori.

FSP and Technip have also co-operated closely on previous demanding surface treatment projects. During the last few years, FSP has carried out surface treatment work on parts of spar production platforms and large-scale reels intended for pipelaying vessels.

Nowadays Technip manufactures mainly heavy steel structures for oil production in Mäntyluoto. Technip S.A. is a large global company of French origin, which designs, manufactures and delivers equipment for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. The company has a subsidiary in Finland, Technip Offshore Finland Oy, which owns the Mäntyluoto shipyard that was previously under the ownership of Rauma-Repola Oy.

The pipe systems are a part of the extensive Moho Nord project built around a massive oil and gas reservoir.

Moho Nord is the largest oil reservoir project in the history of the Congo. Oil pumping from the sea floor commenced in 2015. The estimated oil production will reach 140,000 barrels per day in the next few years.

Constant inspections and tests The modules will remain on the sea floor for many decades under harsh conditions.

For this reason, top-quality surface treatment is essential, since modules laid on the ocean floor cannot be given a regular maintenance coating in the same way as, for example, bridges. strict inspections and documentations on, for example, pre-treatment and painting phases and the relevant conditions and paint film thickness.

Flexibility increases productivity Inspections were carried out after each work phase. Finally the porosity of the paint film on the product receiving surface treatment was subjected to a porosity test, and the coating was tested with a tensile test in order to eliminate any potential problems with adhesion or cohesion.

Quality control was enforced by FSP, Technip and the inspectors of the client.

According to Miikka Kuutilo, the FSP Area Manager for Southern and Central Finland, FSP has constant ongoing capacity to meet Technip's surface treatment needs in a flexible manner, either at the Mäntyluoto shipyard or the surface treatment facility in Pori.

"Good project management and a smart, customer service-oriented and jointly agreed-upon manner of operation are the key for completing a successful surface treatment project. Commitment to tight schedules is important in the subcontracting chain, because adherence to the schedules increases the productivity of the entire project," Kuutilo explains. ■

The gigantic Höga Kusten Bridge got a durable surface in Sweden The two-kilometre long Höga Kusten Bridge got a durable and landscape-friendly surface during the summer of 2015. The company in charge of the surface treatment project was FSP, which was selected by the Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket, as the contractor after a public call for tenders.

ccording to Kjell Hägglund, the Project Manager at Trafikverket, cooperation with the surface treatment company FSP was smooth. The project was started in the summer of 2014, and Hägglund states that all repair and maintenance painting work was carried out according to the agreement, and the quality of the end results met the expectations.

"Trafikverket had very high demands for the company that would receive the surface treatment contract for the Höga Kusten Bridge. We chose FSP because their offer was on the whole the most cost-efficient.

Work was carried out as agreed and communication was smooth," says Hägglund.

The contract in its entirety covered surface treatment work, reporting, docu-

mentation and traffic arrangements. The targets for surface treatment were the bridge railing posts and edges of the box girder structures.

Fluent dialogue and expertise are the key The Höga Kusten Bridge is located in the province of Ångermanland in Northern Sweden, and it was inaugurated in December 1997.

The FSP surface treatment project was led on site by Site Manager Ismo Rönkkö, who explains that the contract employed on average ten surface treatment workers. In addition to Rönkkö, operations were supervised by Foreman Heikki Molkka.

According to Rönkkö, the project was carried out so that the Northern part of the

bridge was the objective for the summer of 2014, and the Southern part was treated during the year 2015. There are 1,850 railing posts in total, and all of them were first unbolted from the structure.

"Damaged post bolts were removed and replaced with new ones. Mounting plates for the posts and the edges and sides of the box girder structures were shotblasted and painted. Their surface got four layers of epoxy coating," explains Rönkkö.

To further prevent potential moisture damages, sealing material was injected in the sides of the posts.

"Our surface treatment partner must be an esteemed professional in order for this project to be finished successfully. A fluent dialogue is a must," says Hägglund and

points out that during the Höga Kusten project the language of communication was Swedish.

Strict safety requirements Hägglund continues that another essential factor was that FSP's site manager and foreman were on site every day monitoring the progression of the work and documenting the work in accordance with the agreement.

With regard to bridge projects, Ismo Rönkkö underlines that while it is important to pay attention to the environment, it is equally important to maintain safe working conditions: it is a long fall from the bridge, and the bridge is used continuously throughout the project. There are four lanes on the Höga Kusten bridge. During surface

treatment work, one lane on the bridge was closed for traffic and the painting equipment was moved every three hundred meters.

"The requirements for safe roadwork conditions are particularly strict in Sweden.

Focusing on occupational safety was crucial for this project. In the summer time, there is a lot of traffic on Höga Kusten due to heavy goods traffic and increasing summer tourism," explains Rönkkö.

Quality control throughout the system Work quality was controlled with documentation and inspections, which covered the entire surface treatment system.

FSP monitored its work continuously with its own control inspections, and in addition Trafikverket carried out random inspections

on a regular basis. In addition to film thickness measurements, general conditions such as the air temperature and dew point were monitored every day.

Rönkkö states that the smoothly accomplished bridge surface treatment job was preceded by well-formed project plans and timetables. In addition, good weather conditions facilitated the completion of the project. If it rains, surface treatment work has to be done under protective tents, in which it is possible to treat loose parts such as railing posts.

Expertise is always required to guarantee a high-quality end result, which is why FSP's project staff consists of top-level professionals.

Large bridges offer work in Sweden

In 2014–2015, FSP has completed a total of 13 bridge projects of different sizes in Sweden. Just this summer, FSP completed for example the massive Rotebro motorway bridge project, which was carried out near Sweden's capital Stockholm, without even interrupting the busy traffic.

I

n the Rotebro project, FSP did surface treatment work on two heavily trafficked bridges, each 300 metres long. FSP was in charge of surface treatment work on the bridge section joints, high-pressure washing of the bridges and final coating. Surface treatment phases were carried out as the main contractor Ruukki finished bridge parts. Final coating was carried out only when the bridges were completely finished. On FSP's part, the project employed at best 9 people.

"For years, FSP has been our reliable partner when it comes to high-pressure washing, shot blasting and corrosion protection painting," says Ruukki Site Manager Bernt Strandvall.­ He is happy with FSP's work effort: "We will certainly use FSP in our future projects as well."

The year 2014 saw the completion of other Swedish arch bridge and plate girder bridge projects in the Counties of Gävleborg, Jämtland and Dalarna. Last fall, surface treatment and painting projects on three smaller bridges were also started for ÅMV Produktion.

At the moment, the Site Manager for FSP in Sweden is Ismo Rönkkö, the Vice President is Mathias Dyberg, and the Operational Manager responsible for offshore operations and projects is Juha Granholm. ■

Specialised vessels receive surface treatment in Rauma

During 2015, Rauma Marine Constructions Oy (RMC) carried out modifications to icebreaker Otso and to oil spill response vessel Louhi.

FSP served as the main partner in the project, and was responsible for the specialised vessels’ surface treatment.

A

ccording to Rauma Marine Constructions Production Manager Markku Uusitalo, the shipyard benefited from its partnership with FSP during the modification project. ”Our choice to collaborate with FSP was the result of a competitive tendering process. During the projects themselves, we appreciated that FSP achieved high-quality results, ensured reliability of delivery, and adhered to the agreed schedule," Uusitalo recounts. ”The modification projects were completed on a tight schedule, and a short lead time thus emerged as a crucial factor in the surface treatment process. FSP had the capacity to adjust to an increased workload, without compromising quality.”

RMC was responsible for converting icebreaker Otso into a multipurpose vessel at Rauma Shipyard. The project sought to create an icebreaker capable of operating across seas and oceans anywhere on the planet, and after the modifications were completed, the vessel set a course for the Arctic waters of Greenland. Launched in 1985, Otso was originally intended to operate in the Baltic Sea.

Turnkey project The modifications carried out to Otso proved wide-ranging as well as demanding. The underwater section of the hull was strengthened to an ”officially” ice-proof standard.

The project also entailed modernising the superstructure as well as adding a helicopter deck, lifeboats and an anti-roll tank. The vessel also underwent annual maintenance.

The vessel’s length overall is 99 metres, and its beam 24 metres.

FSP carried out the surface treatment of the vessel’s facade, tanks, anti-roll tank and other parts of the superstructure as a turnkey project. The project comprised shot and sand blasting as well as painting work, and required the efforts of up to 15 employees. ”As the project advanced, the amount of surface treatment work required increased.

And due to the high quality of that work, the vessel is now equipped with a durable surface that will serve it well as it leaves the Baltic Sea for the harsh high-salinity conditions of the oceans," says FSP Project Leader Juha Granholm.

Environmental awareness is the key ”We also appreciated FSP’s expertise with regard to environmental awareness and reporting, which highlight e.g. paint consumption, VOC emissions and generated waste," Uusitalo continues.

Multipurpose vessel Louhi is used to carry out oil spill and environmental damage response missions, and also serves as a maintenance vessel for the Finnish Navy.

Owned by the Finnish Environment Institute and manned and operated by the Navy, the vessel measures 71 metres in length and 14 metres in width. ■

Major investment in Poland FSP and Finland's largest producer of hydraulic cylinders, Hydroline, will co-operate on an extensive investment project in Poland this year. Together, the two companies will build a surface treatment facility in Hydroline's production plant located near Cargotec factory in the city of Stargard Szczeci´n ski.

T

he facilities will have a total of three surface treatment lines, which are designed and build in co-operation with FSP's Engineering unit which is in charge of expert services.

“We design, tender out, and choose based on the tenders the best surface treatment lines for Hydroline for the purposes of wet painting and powder coating. The surface treatment facility must meet our needs and the requirements set out in legislation,” says the leader of FSP's Engineering unit, Jukka Lähde.

The Engineering unit offers consultation services also in the selection of the chemicals used in preliminary treatment.

FSP will also build its own line system in the same factory, and the system will encompass, for example, a shot blasting chamber and three painting chambers.

The turnover of Hydroline's factory in Poland will be the major part of new business; this means that there will be almost no product transfers from Finland to Poland.

Reverse China tendency in play “The investment decision is based on the good demand situation in Poland, the growing manufacturing industry market in Central Europe, and the possibility to find educated workers from the area,” says FSP Finnish Steel Painting Ltd CEO Pentti Virtanen.

“There is also a reverse China tendency in play; manufacturing industry is no longer being moved from Europe to China in increasing amounts, it is also being moved back from China to Europe.”

“Co-operation in Poland will naturally extend the partnership between FSP and Hydroline also internationally. Moreover, investing supports our strategy of becoming international in the Baltic Sea area,” adds Virtanen.

The companies are extending their already long-lasting co-operation. FSP has been responsible for the surface treatment of Hydroline's hydraulic cylinders at the Siilinjärvi production plant since 2008. At the moment, FSP is operating actively in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Poland and Norway. ■

Quality certification expanded abroad

Caverion and FSP sign agreement

FSP’S ISO 9001 QUALITY CERTIFICATION covers now, in addition to Finland, also FSP’s international operations in Sweden, Estonia and Poland. ”This is advantageous to our customers and collaboration partners because the standards define shared ways of doing things. We’re committed to these shared ways of working. At the same time, the auditing process helps ensure our best practices are indeed the best and provides us with useful tips on further developing our activities," says Kati Pajunen, QHES Manager at FSP. The certification covers the quality system but moreover, the selected ways of working are in line with those applied in the environmental, occupational health and safety system. The audit process is carried out by Bureau Veritas, the world’s leading provider of certification services.

The management system at FSP in Finland – quality, environment, occupational health and safety – has been certified ever since 2001. ■

Caverion Industria Oy and FSP have signed an agreement regarding industrial surface treatment services. The contract is a significant one and FSP will take responsibility for Caverion’s site- and project-specific surface treatment activities in Finland and if needed, also abroad. FSP’s certified management system and considerable resources were a precondition for the signing of the contract. FSP’s quality, environmental, occupational safety and health standards secure high-end results for surface treatments. ■

Hallands Väderö lighthouse repaired in Sweden FSP HAS RECEIVED A CHALLENGING SURFACE TREATMENT PROJECT OF A LIGHTHOUSE IN SWEDEN. The steel structured 13-metre lighthouse in Torekov, Skåne was built in 1884, and it is now being completely renovated. The assignment is the first lighthouse FSP is working on in Sweden.

"FSP's tender won the lighthouse contract. Initially, about half of the steel parts of the lighthouse were meant to be replaced, but we discovered that the framework structures had suffered corrosion-related damage so that up to 90 percent of them must be replaced," says Ismo Rönkkö, FSP’s site manager in Sweden. The project was ordered from FSP by Sjöfartsverket (the Swedish Maritime Administration).

The work is progressing on schedule. In September, FSP will start with painting and surface treatment. The project is estimated to be completed before the end of the year. After surface treatment, the wooden parts on the inside will be repaired with respect to the original.

The lighthouse’s external brass parts will be renovated, which will give them a beautiful appearance. In the renovating stage, methods such as glass blasting and varnishing will be used.

The lighthouse project employs, in addition to surface treatment specialist, also welders, carpenters and scaffolding builders. As a company FSP has earlier experience with lighthouse renovation: the company has completed a few such projects in Finland, as well. ■

FROSIO inspection order in Denmark FSP HAS PERFORMED A FROSIO INSPECTION FOR STEELDONE GROUP LTD IN DENMARK. The project included the monitoring and inspection of the installation painting of lifting machinery.

FSP had earlier performed a Norsok standard surface treatment to the machinery in Finland.

The four-month inspection was performed by FSP's FROSIO certified inspector Marko Sankari. The inspection concerned lifting machinery that was placed on the North Sea Giant maintenance vessel operated by Statol at the Åsgard oil and gas fields. The machinery is used to lower modules to the bottom of the sea that can weigh up to 400 tons.

The steel parts were manufactured by SteelDone's subcontractors.

The inspection was ordered by Technip.

FSP has long experience in offshore structures and seven FROSIO certified inspectors. This qualification is especially required in demanding surface treatment destinations such as oil platforms and other offshore projects.

Quality is monitored with inspections and tests that cover the whole surface treatment system. Careful inspections and documentation will be performed during the work on e.g. steel work, pre-treatment, abrasive blasting and painting, conditions during work and thickness of the paint layer.

This way, a high quality end result is guaranteed for the surface treatment. The goal is to prevent the extremely aggressive corrosion caused by salty sea water. ■

TRANSTECH OY, A RAILWAY VEHICLE SUPPLIER AND MANUFACTURER OF ENGINEERING PRODUCTS, and FSP have signed a significant cooperation agreement covering several years.

The agreement states that FSP will provide surface treatment for outer surface parts of low-floor articulated trams at the Savonlinna factory in the eastern part of Finland.

It is a significant order covering a total of 38 tramcars during 2015–2017. All new tramcars are meant to start operating in Helsinki by 2018. The agreement also includes an option of similar surface treatment for a maximum of 90 extra tramcars during 2017–2025.

The surface treatment agreement concerns the composite structures on the outside of tramcars such as outer wall panels, front panels, roof panels and skirting. Additionally, gluing windows to side wall panels is included. FSP provides these components a total surface treatment according to a certified management system that guarantees high quality and environmentally friendly treatment. The high quality demands on the surface treatment of tramcars make the project very significant.

The new tramcar model to be used in Helsinki is double articulated and can carry a total of 199 passengers with 74 fixed seats. Road tests within line service began in the spring in 2014 and serial production begins this year. ■
