The Southern’s history series part 1: the Blue and White Eleven Part 1 The Southern newspaper is working closely with the Florida Southern College McKay Archives Center to provide in-depth stories about FSC’s history.

The first part of the series focuses on the Blue and White Eleven - a name used for Florida Southern’s former football team due to the team’s colors and the number of players on the field.

This story focuses on the program’s highlights, some key players and the lessons we can all learn from the Blue and White Eleven.

FSC updates FSCares policies due to Omicron variant Dylan Olive Staff Writer With the rise of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron, Florida Southern College has updated its FSCares COVID-19 plan to maintain the health and wellness of FSC students, faculty and staff.

Since the start of the pandemic, COVID-19 has seen a myriad of variants, such as Beta, Alpha and the most wellknown and frequent variant from last semester: Delta.

Omicron is the most recent evolution of the virus, discovered in Botswana and South Africa in late November 2021.

This variant is more transmissible than other variants and has resulted in a major spike in COVID-19 cases worldwide.

With this new surge of cases due to the Omicron variant, FSC decided to alter the COVID-19 policies once again to keep the

required everywhere indoors, which was how it was in the Fall 2021 term until early November when FSC announced that masks were no longer required in dining facilities and residence halls.

Vaccinated students who test positive do not have to quarantine unless they experience symptoms, in which they have to quarantine for at least five days, while unvaccinated students who test positive must quarantine at an off-campus facility until cleared to return to campus.

The FSCares plan also says unvaccinated students are required to get scheduled tests regularly, non-FSC students are not allowed in residence halls for visits and contact tracing is still in effect.

The United States set the record for the most reported cases in a day on Jan. 3, with 978,856 reported cases. According to the CDC, every U.S. state is marked as having high transmission for COVID-19, which estimates that nearly 59 percent of daily cases are caused by the Omicron variant.

This has resulted in Broadway shows closing, flights being canceled and even schools going virtual again.

“It’s thriving because it has these mutations that let it get by the vaccines pretty easily, so all these people that Delta couldn’t get to, Omicron can,” National Public Radio’s Will Stone said.

Because the variant began spreading around the holidays, many FSC students went home to celebrate and be with family, and many were infected with COVID-19.

Luckily, students reported not having too many symptoms from the virus.

“I just recently had [COVID] over winter break, thankfully it wasn’t too bad because I have my vaccine, but it was upsetting to be stuck inside instead of celebrating with family,” freshman Hannah Atkinson said.

“My experience was that one night I had horrible chills to the point I had like 4 blankets on me,” freshman Logan Dill said.

“I then decided to go get tested.”

As of Jan. 27, there have been a total of 468 students, faculty and staff tested for COVID-19 on campus, with 92 of them being positive.

There have been a total of 82 positive cases at off-campus testing sites.

“I am glad FSC is taking the proper precautions in order to not exacerbate this issue further,” senior Dominic Garrido said.

Despite the rise of Omicron and the mass increase of infections, cases are starting to drop. As of Jan. 18, the average infection count has been sitting at about 800,000 per day — down 47 percent compared to the previous few weeks.

Even though there’s currently a decline in cases, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy warns citizens that the Omicron variant has yet to reach its peak.

“I think that the track this virus takes is the ups and downs, it gets bad then gets good then back to bad,” Dill said. “I think we will be back to how we were at the end of last semester by the end of the year.”

Bigfoot conference held at RP Funding Center Emma Poole, Salvatore Ambrosino

Staff Writer, Features Editor Cones and barricades lined the way across an empty paved lot toward entrance two of RP Funding Center. The unassuming exterior of the event gave no clue that for many Bigfoot enthusiasts across the state of Florida, this was Mecca.

Jan. 22, marked the annual Great Florida Bigfoot Conference — an annual event that for Florida Sasquatch hunters and believers, represents solidarity a ong a grou dedicated to finding out the truth behind cryptid sightings.

Behind all the cowboy hats, hiking boots and cameras that clogged the halls, several Sasquatch experts waited to share their experiences at a group of tables known as Researcher’s Row. There they sat — people who had devoted their life to discovering more about Bigfoot — ready to discuss what they have witnessed.

In the middle of all the commotion sat a man behind a table stacked with books, movies, CDs and bottles of Sasquatch hot sauce. The vinyl banner hanging behind him revealed that he was Lyle Blackburn, an acclaimed Bigfoot researcher.

“I live in Texas, so I live about three hours from where the infamous legend of Boggy Creek took place, and that is essentially reports of a Sasquatchlike creature in Southern Arkansas,” Blackburn said.

Boggy Creek was an incident that shaped Blackburn’s interest in Bigfoot.

“They made a movie called The Legend of Boggy Creek that came out in 1972, which has kind of become a famous case as far as Bigfoot, and especially Bigfoot

Blackburn wasn’t the only one at Researcher’s Row who has long been fascinated by Bigfoot.

“My interest started at the age of 7, seeing the atterson i lin fil , idoti said his fil was the first docu entation of Bigfoot, captured in 1967 by two Bigfoot hunters in California.

Sidoti is still waiting to have a Sasquatch encounter. “I have never had eye-to-eye contact with a Bigfoot, but I’ve seen and heard everything that they do, been in areas where they’ve been, I just haven’t personally laid eyes on one yet.”

“It’s something that I’ve always believed in, even as a young man,” Dr. Bill Hewitt said. “People are seeing things—they can’t all be lying.” n the field, they call hi the doctor Hewitt is a cryptozoologist. He studies

animals that fall under the catagories of well known and extinct to little known and mythic. He’s been the boots on the ground in the search for Bigfoot in Miami for a decade.

“There’s been so many good researchers over the years,” Hewitt said.

He went back to school at the age of 65 and found a course on cryptozoology.

On his chest sit two skunk-ape sightings like pins.

Hewitt says that conventions like the one in Lakeland are that much more important since the coverage of Bigfoot sightings have been few and far apart.

Rarely are the claims taken seriously. But Hewitt also says he likes the skeptics.

“The skeptics help keep us honest,” Hewitt said. “I know a lot of people who do research who get a little carried away.

So it keeps us honest.”

Sandwich Ministries continues Munn Park charity effort Jenna Wilkinson Staff Writer On Jan. 23, dozens of people gathered in 40 degree weather at Munn Park for food and resources.

Sandwich Ministries, a student-run charity, regularly meets on Sundays to supply around 100 people with food and hygiene products to last them the day.

“I’ve never seen such kind people that are always happy no matter the circumstances,” Elise Clements said.

Elise Clements is a sophomore at Florida Southern and also the president of Sandwich Ministries. Florida Southern offers this program that welcomes all who have a longing to help within the community. In fact, a common misconception is that this inistry is only for the religiously affiliated Sandwich Ministries gather at the Fannin Center every Sunday afternoon to pack and deliver hygiene products like deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste. They also provide hand warmers and socks to give out at Munn Park. They also hand out snack bags which include a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, fruit snacks with a Sprite, Coke or a bottle of water.

They carpool and meet at Munn Park where everyone goes around and evenly distributes the items to everyone in need.

Many love to converse with the volunteers and tell them about their life stories.

“A lot of them come just to have a friendly conversation with someone because many disregard them,” Clements said.

keep a positive mindset. Jeff and Trisha, a couple without a home, walk with their dog Braxter, who has been their emotional support animal. That day they were denied entry to Lighthouse Ministries, a local shelter, because of their dog.

They then decided to walk to Munn Park with hopes of catching up with the Sandwich Ministries.

The two received food, socks and hand warmers, and then asked to pray over the charity.

“It is really important for me to have this perspective in life, it really humbles you,” Clements said. “I am grateful to know these people, just to talk about their life with them and everything they have been through.”

Emily Henninger, a freshman, said that “going out helping people” herself and “seeing everyone happy,” is a rewarding experience.

Most of the people who gathered at Munn Park say that they lost their jobs during the pandemic. Unemployment spiked to 18.4 percent in May 2020, the highest it’s been in over a decade. Many local businesses and restaurants were not able to survive due to stay at home policies which forced shutdowns and left many without a job.

A woman who wishes to go by Megan was in a major car crash over 20 years ago and has suffered many strokes since. She was told by doctors she wasn’t supposed to live past 2005.

Though Megan beat the odds and still lives, she fell into homelessness and became a benefactor of the charity for many years.

Now, Megan has a stable job and is closing on a house. She still stops by on Sundays to give out handmade cross necklaces and keychains to the volunteers of Sandwich Ministries.

s the first coffee house in Lakeland, Mitchell’s Coffee House has been a community epicenter for 24 years. Its owner, Mitchell Harvey, known to his customers and co-workers as Mitch, starts his day with a cup of black coffee.

“It takes a small village to get opened up in the mornings,” Harvey said.

The coffee house awakens each day at 4 a.m., with staff members preparing pastries, baked desserts and making further preparations for lunch and dinner.

At sunrise, the store is ready to open its doors.

Harvey himself is a large man, and anyone who meets him could tell that he likes to keep busy. When in the shop, he is either running around helping behind the counter with customers, greeting friends or helping in the kitchen, rubbing his worn hands together whenever he does get a chance to sit still.

When entering the coffee house, one is filled with war feelings ro the local ‘Rafa natural’ hand soap in the bathrooms to the local artists paintings on the walls, you feel like this place is truly made out of what makes Lakeland the community what it is. The front of the shop features the coffee counter and baked goods display case, such as peanut butter cakes, blueberry mousse pies, chocolate and peanut butter cookies as well as one of their more popular treats: large cinnamon rolls dripping in icing. The walls of the coffee counter are lined with aged brown shelving and cabinets, stacked with different coffee cups, honey jars, small house plants and hand-written chalkboard menus.

Using the warm background of colors, the walls are forever changing, featuring new pieces of art by local artists each month, giving staff and customers something new to look at.

“I spend a lot of time here and I don’t want to look at the same work all the time so instead of repainting the walls periodically we just change the art out,” Harvey said.

The recipes used in the coffee house are those of family recipes, or recipes of friends that feel like family. One recipe, one of their oldest, is their chicken gumbo.

This recipe he learned when spending time in the bayous of Louisiana with one of those family friends. Later on, the same friend came down to the coffee house to teach the staff.

When asked what inspired him to open what would be the first coffee house in Lakeland, he responds with the TV show “Friends.”

“I see kids like you that come here and discover us.” Harvey said. “I have former Florida Southern students that come back and bring their babies in here and go ‘I can’t believe you guys are still here. I used to come here all the time.’ And I remember them, so it’s fun, it’s fun to see that, and I guess that’s the biggest thing, you know, the impact.”

Before the campus even called Lake Hollingsworth home, the pride of Florida Southern College–known as Southern College at the time–was its football team. Boasting wins against Stetson, University of Miami, Rollins College and even the University of Florida, the history of the Blue and White Eleven is little-known but rich nonetheless. lorida outhern ollege was first located in eesburg, la Although the college was established in 1885, the football program was not instated until 1912. Of course, the program got off to a rocky start – the next year, the Moccasins were defeated 144-0 by the University of Florida Gators. That did not deter the team from working to become stronger in the coming years.

David Carlyle Huskey: From Oklahoma City, this star basketball player saw a need and became a leader on the football team in 1929.

With World War I coming to an end, the Moccasins missed a season in 1918. But in 1919, they were due for the biggest comeback in the history of the program.

It was Saturday, Nov. 1, 1919. Southern College’s Moccasins were set to meet one of their biggest rivals, the University of

Florida Gators, in Sutherland (now St. Petersburg), Fla. In the most major upset in Florida Southern football history, the Blue and White goal was never threatened – the Moccasins defeated the Gators 7-0. his win gave the college the confidence that they needed to take pride in their football team.

James “Doc” Melton: Leadership and resilience are two words to describe this athlete, who created an entire season schedule for the team with no help from the college.

However, in their very next season, in 1920, the college lost their athletics program.

The future of the Southern College football program may not have looked the brightest, but a major change was on the horizon for the college. he year brought about a significant development to Southern College’s football story, when the college moved to its current location in Lakeland. With this move, the football program was reinstated.

Before the 1923 season began, a practice game showed significant growth on the tea , which was promising for both the team and the fans. The 1923 season opened on Oct. 13.

Johnny Woodall: A popular student coach, Woodall recruited an entire football squad from Southern’s intramural teams.

Marcus “Joker” Marchant: Longtime Lakeland Parks and Recreation director and namesake of Joker Marchant Stadium, this player led Southern College football to a conference championship.

The Stetson Hatters, one of Southern’s rivals, were the opponents. Much to the surprise of the fans, the Moccasins outplayed the Hatters in every stage of the game, defeating Stetson and setting the school up for a riveting season.

Florida Southern offers an abundance of clubs for any interest, although few allow non-members to participate.

Studio Box, an improvisational comedy club, features its members, called “boxers,” performing in a series of games and skits for an audience.

Boxers are chosen in real time for the show by President Liam Fisher and Vice Presidents Cole Kucharski and Sami Beason, based on their involvement during practice in the weeks prior.

Shows are held every other Friday at 10 p.m. at their new location, the Weinstein Auditorium, located in the Computer Science Building. The shows typically last for about an hour and are also livestreamed

on Studio Box’s Instagram page, @ studiobox.fsc, for those who are unable to attend in person. Their games and skits are highly interactive with their live audience.

Proctors of the show will ask those in the audience for suggestions on words or ideas for the next game or skit the boxers chosen will improvise.

“I joined because I wanted to join some clubs that would be fun, provide me with a good experience and a great group of friends,” boxer Kamryn Potteiger said.

Studio Box is an audition based club; however, one does not need any improvisational experience. Auditions are open to anyone interested in being a part of the club.

Unfortunately, auditions are currently closed until the next school year. They will open back up at the beginning of the fall 2022 semester.

As for attending the show, Studio Box recommends anyone who wants to relieve some stress, watch people “looking like buffoons” and anyone who appreciates dirty humor, to attend the show.

The new movie is not a sequel, but it is also not a reboot: it is a “requel,” as described by new horror-obsessed character Mindy Meeks-Martin. This means that it is not a reboot of the original but it is not a direct sequel either, it is bringing back original characters, introducing new characters and rewriting the rules of the original movie.

It still pays respect to the original and its legacy, but it is reinventing it and making up new rules, which means no one is safe.

On Rotten Tomatoes, a popular entertainment review site, “Scream” is certified fresh with a ercent Tomatometer, and an 83 percent audience score.

Going into the spring 2022 season, the mens and womens lacrosse team of Florida Southern Athletics are in preparation for the upcoming season.

Last year’s lacrosse season showed both wins and losses, with the women’s team finishing their season with a record of wins and 1 loss, along with achieving many notable team, and individual, superlatives.

Connor explained that the team plans to improve in a lot of areas this season, the main one being executions. “...we were in the right spot, we just have to make the play,” Connor said. he ande ic has brought many different challenges to college sports which Atlas described as “mentally challenging” and caused a “lack of connection” throughout the team. Connor also mentions the adversity on and off the field, but assures they are going into this season “guns blazing.”

Looking back, Connor and Atlas admire their new friendships, memories and how the team has helped them grow overall.

Both captains have the same expectation to “win the conference” for their team this upcoming season, along with Atlas’s addition of “no excuses.” he first ga e of the season will be held on Feb. 4 for the men’s team in South Carolina against the Anderson Trojans.

FSC Athletics appoints new assistant director Jameson Champion The Southern Editor Florida Southern has introduced a new member to its Athletics Department this semester with the hiring of the new Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Brad Bee. His hiring comes as the replacement to the previous assistant director, Travis Larner who had replaced Chris Gonzalez in the fall semester.

As the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications, Bee is responsible for much of what FSC’s students see regarding Mocs sports.

He oversees all social media content, press releases, videos and programs made by the school regarding its athletics.

This includes broadcasts for FSC’s student athletics as well as stat-keeping.

“I always tell people that we are the ESPN of FSC athletics,” Bee said.

Bee has experience within the role of Assistant Director of Athletic Communications, as prior to working at FSC he served in the same role at Saint Leo University.

Saint Leo University is a member college to the Sunshine State Conference, the same conference that FSC athletic teams play in.

"For me, the reason I came here was because of the rich history, wellknown programs, great coaches, great administration..." Bee said. "I report to Kelly Semrau, the VP of Marketing and Communications. That for me professionally that was a big piece to draw me here."

Bee also cites working with Dean of Wellness and Athletics Director Drew Howard as another great opportunity.

"For me, it was two greats in one job," Bee said. "It's very helpful for me." ne of the first tas s that ee intends to accomplish this semester is to focus on the brand of FSC athletics.

One way of doing so is expanding the athletic photography for Mocs Athletics social media channels in order to increase awareness of FSC’s student athletes.

“My big thing is that we can push photos of our athletes, athletes take it, reuse it, and our brand is getting a further reach,” Bee said.

Bee is excited to play a part at FSC and is ready for spring sports to get into action this semester and seeing some of the Mocs athletes in action.

"Seeing the Spring sports get up and going is always good," Bee said.

"Womens Lacrosse [is] ranked in the nation, baseball is up there battling for ranking."

He is also ready to see the Mocs play this Spring from the viewpoint of his new role as part of FSC’s Department of Athletics.

“I’m just excited to see Florida Southern Athletics from behind the scenes,” Bee said.
