Welcome W
E AT GRANETA pride ourselves on a low-key marketing approach and try to ensure that our bulls do the talking for themselves. As our bulls are prepared right, they not only survive but they also thrive and prove themselves with our clients through increasing fertility gains and higher weaning weights. Our cow herds are run under commercial conditions at Taroom and Bell, and with the Queensland weather conditions, naturally means that our cattle are heat tolerant, slick skinned and tough enough to handle the conditions that can be thrown at them. It is exciting times for us this year to see a large number of ET and AI calves hitting the ground with some of the leading genetics in the Angus breed. Our Angus bulls this year are an excellent even line due to our selection of sires. Ascot Highlander who is our standout sire has a low birth-weight who puts plenty of growth into his calves, a strong masculine head, good feet and puppy quiet in nature with 18 sons in this year’s sale. Clunie Range Midnight is a Reality son who was purchased to use over our heifers. His sons and daughters are deep bodied, full of red meat, with some of his sons topping our sale last year. We decided to use Midnight as a covering bull for our AI program on one of our cow herds. Midnight also has 18 sons in this sale. Milwillah Napa has two sons in the sale which were purchased on cows we bought from the Premier dispersal sale. All our Angus bulls are genomic tested, sire verified and tested negative for Pesti. Our Limousin bulls are an even line up of reds and black by Mandayen Vision who breeds thick, meaty bulls with softness in a moderate frame. A high docile Sire who has 7 sons in this year’s sale. Our good friends Damian & Mandy Gommers from Mandayen stud have sent up 6 spring Limousin bulls to keep up our Limousin numbers for our valued clients. Our line up of Limousin bulls maybe small in numbers but they are a top line up of bulls. We are very excited this year to welcome TopX Roma to join the Kellco team as our selling agents. Cyril and his team bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience in the beef industry and blended with Brendan and Andrew’s enthusiasm and work ethics makes them a force to be reckoned with. SALE DETAILS COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS: The sale will operate under any CURRENT COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS and be subject to change. We continue to recommend pre-sale inspections and bidding online or over the phone to manage any health risks.
SELLING SYSTEM: Sale of animals will be conducted under normal auction terms and conditions and will be interfaced online with AuctionsPlus. Please register and complete the buyers training with AuctionsPlus at least 24 hours pre-sale and log-in early if bidding online. Your livestock agent will assist. All bulls will be delivered free of charge.
INSURANCE: Insurance is available from the agents on the day. We strongly recommend insurance on your purchases.
HERD HEALTH: All sale bulls are tested negative PI (Persistently Infected) and vaccinated against Pestivirus with Pestigard vaccine. They are fully vaccinated with 7 in 1 (for Clostridial and Lepto) Vibrio and 3 Day Sickness vaccine only requiring annual boosters. All bulls are blooded with 3 Germ, the Graneta herd is JBAS 6.
MANAGEMENT: All Graneta bulls carry a freeze brand for easy ID in the paddock. Graneta sale bulls are quiet, well-mannered cattle used to being handled on foot, with dogs, ATVs and vehicles. They are rigorously screened for their temperament.

FERTILITY: All bulls have passed a physical examination and microscopic crush side semen test including semen morthology.
SIRE VERIFICATION and DNA HDI50K TESTING: All Angus bulls have been sire verified (SV) and genomic HDi50K tested. They can be used to breed registered calves without further testing. The performance recording and genomic results are single step incorporated into TACE Breedplan to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).
HEALTH AND SAFETY OF VISITORS: Visitors enter the pens at their own risk, children under 16 years old are strictly not permitted in pens.

recessive genetic conditions This is information for bull buyers about the recessive genetic conditions, Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) and Developmental Duplications (DD).
Putting undesirable Genetic Recessive Conditions in perspective All animals, including humans, carry single copies (alleles) of undesirable or “broken” genes. In single copy form, these undesirable alleles usually cause no harm to the individual. But when animals carry 2 copies of certain undesirable or “broken” alleles it often results in bad consequences. Advances in genomics have facilitated the development of accurate diagnostic tests to enable the identification and management of numerous undesirable or “broken” genes. Angus Australia is proactive in providing its members and their clients with relevant tools and information to assist them in the management of known undesirable genes and our members are leading the industry in their use of this technology.
What are AM, NH, CA and DD? AM, NH, CA and DD are all recessive conditions caused by “broken” alleles within the DNA of individual animals. When a calf inherits 2 copies of the AM or NH alleles their development is so adversely affected that they will be still-born. In other cases, such as CA and DD, calves carrying 2 copies of the broken allele may reach full-term. In such cases the animal may either appear relatively normal, or show physical symptoms that affect their health and/or performance.
How are the conditions inherited? Research in the U.S. and Australia indicates that AM, NH, CA and DD are simply inherited recessive conditions. This means that a single gene (or pair of alleles) controls the condition. For this mode of inheritance two copies of the undesirable allele need to be present before the condition is seen; in which case you may get an abnormal calf. A more common example of a trait with a simple recessive pattern of inheritance is black and red coat colour. Animals with only one copy of the undesirable allele (and one copy of the normal form of the allele) appear normal and are known as “carriers”.
What happens when carriers are mated to other animals? Carriers, will on average, pass the undesirable allele to a random half (50 %) of their progeny. When a carrier bull and carrier cow is mated, there is a 25% chance that the resultant calf will inherit two normal alleles, a 50% chance that the mating will result in a carrier (i.e. with just 1 copy of the undesirable allele, and a 25% chance that the calf will inherit two copies of the undesirable gene.
If animals tested free of the undesirable gene are mated to carrier animals the condition will not be expressed at all. All calves will appear normal, but approximately half (50%) could be expected to be carriers.
How is the genetic status of animals reported? DNA-based diagnostic tests have been developed which can be used to determine whether an individual animal is either a carrier or free of the alleles resulting in AM, NH, CA or DD. Angus Australia uses advanced software to calculate the probability of (untested) animals to being carriers of AM, NH, CA or DD. The software uses the test results of any relatives in the calculations and the probabilities may change as new results for additional animals become available. This information is displayed on the animal details page and can be accessed by conducting an “Database Search” from the Angus Australia website or looking up individual animals listed in a sale catalogue.
Implications for Commercial Producers Your decision on the importance of the genetic condition status of replacement bulls should depend on the genetics of your cow herd (which bulls you previously used) and whether some female progeny will be retained or sold as breeders. Most Angus breeders are proactive and transparent in managing known genetic conditions, endeavouring to provide the best information available. The greatest risk to the commercial sector from undesirable genetic recessive conditions comes from unregistered bulls with unknown genetic background. The genetic condition testing that Angus Australia seedstock producers are investing in provides buyers of registered Angus bulls with unmatched quality assurance. EXPLANATION OF ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES An Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is an estimate of the genetic merit of that animal for each trait measured. EBVs are provided for the following traits: Calving Ease Direct: estimates the differences in the ability of a sire’s calves to be born unassisted from a 2-year-old heifer. Gestation Length: ranks sires for the time between conception and the birth of a calf. Shorter gestation is indicated by negative EBVs and longer by positive EBVs. Birth Weight: indicates the genetic potential for birth weight. Positive EBVs indicate higher birth weights and negative EBVs indicate lower birth weights of progeny. 200, 400 & 600 Day Weight: give us an estimation of the animal's genetic potential for growth. Mature Cow Weight: estimates differences between animals in live weights of cows at 5 years of age. Milk: a key component of fast growth to weaning is the dam's maternal performance. A bull with a high milk EBV should produce daughters which milk well. Scrotal Size: indicates whether the bull will produce sons with above average or below average scrotal sizes. Carcase Weight: ranks animals for carcase weight. Eye Muscle Area: ranks animals for eye muscle area measured at the 12th rib on a 300kg carcase. Rib Fat: ranks animals for rib fat depth at the 12th rib on a 300kg carcase. Rump Fat: ranks animals for fat depth at the p8 site on the rump on a 300kg carcase. Intra Muscular Fat: ranks animals for the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12th rib of a 300kg carcase. Docility: is expressed as the increase or decrease in the percentage of progeny that will be scored as docile (score 1 or 2). Positive EBVs indicate a higher proportion of progeny that will be scored as docile and negative EBVs indicate a lower percentage of progeny being scored as docile.
