Simon N. Groot founder of East-West Seed A few decades ago, the vegetable seed industry in Southeast Asia was little more than trading. Vegetable plant breeding and the improvement of local tropical varieties hardly existed.

Simon Groot, a sixth generation Dutch seedsman, had a vision of introducing breeding programs to developing seed markets in Asia. Thus, East-West Seed was born 30 years ago with the idea of blending European seed technology with Asian tropical vegetable farming.

Today, East-West Seed has revolutionized Southeast Asia’s vegetable seed market by pioneering localized hybrids and introducing varieties that allow farmers to be more productive.

Small holder farmers who try to improve their income form the majority of our customers, and get the same quality seeds as our large scale commercial farming customers. Many varieties you find in this catalogue are available in small packs of around USD1, making it possible for even the smallest farmer to use superior hybrid genetics. In this way, all of our East-West Seed staff is working together to improve income for small scale famers and to help to improve food security on the planet.

Crucifer

Cabbage PAKSE F1 A medium early hybrid with a good level of heat tolerance.

It has a moderate plant vigor which adapts well to different growing conditions.

Heads are flat round in shape, medium green in color and very compact. Its internal quality is nice, thin leaves, tip burn tolerant and very sweet in taste.

Cauliflower

MAREET F1 This is the earliest hybrid cauliflower in our range with an excellent performance in warm conditions.

Plants are medium in size with short leaves, and somewhat open. Can be planted at rather close distances.

It produces uniform heads. In order to obtain pure white heads, it is advised to apply a cover in early stage of head formation by tying the leaves together or breaking 1 - 2 leaves over the head.

ATRIA F1 Atria is a medium early heat tolerant hybrid.

It has an erect plant habit and shows very good uniformity. Heads have perfect dome shape, shows good firmness and color remains quite white. Since plants are not too large it can be planted at close distances.

It is recommended to cover the heads when they break through in order to obtain pure white heads.

POORNIMA F1 A variety with strong plant vigor, producing uniform heads. It is medium late in maturity and suitable for the semi heat tolerant category.

It has a reasonably good self covering, and needs to be hand covered a few days prior to harvesting.

Heads are of high quality, deep dome, very white and firm.

Pakchoy

MAYLEEN F1 Mayleen performs very well in both wet and dry tropical conditions. It grows very fast, resulting in high yields of uniform plants.

Its plant habit is erect, leaf color is medium to dark glossy green, petioles are large and light green in color.

Eating quality is crispy and sweet.

YUBI F1 A vigorous and fast growing hybrid producing very uniform plants.

Leaf color is medium to dark green and leaves are large, combined with light green petioles which are short, thick and wide in appearance.

Yubi is recommended for growing in warm areas.

GOLDEN SWEET F1 An excellent performing sweet corn hybrid for sub-tropical and tropical growing conditions.

Cobs are of excellent quality, medium in size with good tip fill and highly uniform in size.

Kernel color is bright yellow and taste is outstanding due to its high sweetness.

GOLDEN COB F1 Golden Cob exhibits strong vigor and the ability to produce high quality cobs which are very uniform in size with deep yellow color and good tip fill.

Eating quality is outstanding, tender and very sweet in taste.

SUGAR QUEEN F1 Plants are medium to strong in vigor, producing large size cobs.

Kernel color is attractive yellow and very sweet in taste.

IGGI F1 Appreciated for its sticky soft eating quality, good shelf life and high production of uniform cobs.

Iggi produces ears with straight rows of white kernels, good tip fill and excellent husk cover.

WHAHIBA F1 A new introduction of a bi-color waxy corn hybrid with a sweet taste.

Cucurbit

Bitter Gourd

BAIFU F1 Baifu has moderate plant vigor with medium late maturity.

Fruit wall is strongly warted with an attractive shiny green color. It has cylindrical fruit shape with blunt shoulder and medium blunt blossom end.

It is recommended for indoor as well as open field production.

BILAI F1 Bilai is a very early maturing hybrid.

Fruits are very attractive, shiny light green and of good uniformity. It is highly recommended to grow this variety as a vertical crop only, at a row distance of 1.0-1.2 meters, both indoor and outdoor.

If grown indoor during cold weather conditions, it is suggested to add pollinators, as it may not have enough male flowers to achieve maximum pollination.

BENQIANG F1 Benqiang has an easy setting ability and can reach very high yields given optimum growing conditions.

It is an early maturing hybrid with moderate strong vigor. Its spindle shaped fruits are shiny with an attractive light green color.

BEST F1 Best is a popular hybrid that develops into vigorous plants with strong side branches.

Its glossy, light green fruits are blocky shaped with square shoulders and blunt blossom end. The fruit wall has thick ribs.

Best is medium early in maturity. Yields are very high, as are the percentage of class-A fruits, due to their uniformity in size and shape.

Bitter Gourd

PRACHI F1 Prachi is a very high yielding and early maturing hybrid.

Plant vigor is strong with good branching. Fruits are somewhat blocky to spindle shaped and semi-spined to smooth. Fruit color is attractive green.

Prachi has excellent shelf life and is ideal for long distance transport.

RIANNA F1 Known for its high productivity of medium size fruits, very attractive fruit color that are uniform in size and shape.

It shows a nice combination of strong plant development and a high setting ability.

PALEE F1 A well known hybrid that has an excellent combination of good vigor and earliness.

Fruits are medium long with moderate, but rather thick spines which result in less damage during transport. Color is attractive bluish green.

Because of its enormously high yield potential, Palee is the farmers’ favorite in many markets.

MAYA F1 A hybrid which closely resembles Palee in fruit type, size and yield potential. The only difference is that is white in color.

Plants are very vigorous with dense plant habit.

Its spindle shaped fruits have moderately thick spines contributing to its good transportability.

HYPER C F1 Hyper C is a predominant female flowering variety with a moderate strong vigor and side shoot development.

Cucumber

SAIRA F1 This hybrid has a very strong plant vigor and the ability to continue to produce fruits over a long period.

Fruit type is medium to long and very blocky in shape. Its fruit color is medium to dark green and fruit skin very smooth.

SHIVAYEE F1 Shivayee has strong vigor with a strong side branch development.

It is medium early in maturity. Fruit skin is smooth and almost white in color. Flesh is crispy combined with a small cavity.

Shivayee has the potential to produce very high yields.

MONA LISA F1 It has a wide adaptability and performs well in periods when growing circumstances are not optimal.

Fruits are large and very uniform in shape and size.

Melon

JUPITER F1 Jupiter is a rather early maturing hybrid with a high setting ability.

Its plant vigor is moderate and provides a good cover.

Fruit skin is covered with a coarse netting and becomes creamy white in color when reaching maturity.

BUDDY F1 Buddy develops a medium plant with a good vigor.

Well developed plants can produce easily two to three fruits.

Fruits are short oblong in shape with distinct blotches on the skin and sutured.

Flesh is of high eating quality, sticky and tasty.

AYUDHYA F1 A new introduction, strong in vigor and very high yielding.

Fruits are large and flat round in shape, with a smooth skin and slightly sutured.

This variety is recommended for growing in seasons where pressure of gemini and poty virus is high.

LEELA F1 Leela has strong plant vigor with a semi open plant habit.

Maturity is medium early. Well developed plants can easily produce two to three fruits.

Fruits are flat round, bright green and spotted in its immature stage and turns brown in its mature stage. It has a good flesh thickness which is yellow to yellow-orange in color.

PUJITA F1 This is variety shows a strong vigor and good yield.

Fruits are large, shape flat round with a smooth skin showing slight sutures. Flesh is thick and orange in color.

Its most attractive feature is its intermediate resistance to Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus and papaya ring spot virus.

Pumpkin

ARJUNA F1 A well known variety in most of Asia.

Arjuna is suitable for harvesting either immature green or fully mature red brown, depending on what the market requires.

Ridge Gourd NAGA F1 A much appreciated hybrid in the range of medium green fruit.

Naga shows an excellent performance, high yields with a high percentage of straight fruits.

Its plant habit is vigorous and the hybrid adapts well to a wide range of growing conditions.

JINGDIAN F1 A new introduction in the range of medium to dark green fruit type and half long to long in length.

THEMA Thema is a Kuroda type selected for its remarkable field performance.

It has strong foliage, dark green in color. Roots are bright orange with a smooth skin and small core.

Thema shows a good bolting tolerance, and very high yields can be obtained, provided growing conditions are optimum.

FORTADO This variety is a Nantes type, strongly selected on uniformity, root color and shape. Its foliage development is strong and erect.
