utumn on a school campus always offers some particular joys: the return and sounds of reinvigorated students, afterschool games, sharpening foliage, and cool, fresh air. One special pleasure of the season, too, is preparation of the Scenes fall issue; on its pages in front of me, there again is our most recent graduating class, clad in robes of blue and robes of white, photographed at a variety of events over Commencement Weekend. They are captured in different kinds of moments: posing for a group shot, clowning around with friends, marching in or out, embracing family, teachers, and each other. They are all smiling, and it’s great to see them again!

The fall issue is also a wonderful visual assurance that their Fryeburg Academy experience is not over, and indeed that it will not end. The Class of 2016 may have been replaced by a new set of FA seniors, but turning just a few more pages, I see members of the thriving alumni body to which these graduates now belong. They’ve come back to campus for Reunion Weekend, in celebration of their alma mater and each other. They, too, are smiling, whether commemorating their fifth or fiftieth return home.

Nearly three months into the current school year, I find a deeply reassuring sense of continuity in these pages. Our students enroll, study, play, graduate, and advance into adult lives. I only have to look up from the magazine draft and out my office door to see young people in the early part of that progression, unaware for

all of its 225 years. We at the Academy invite you and all of our wider school community to join us in honoring this enduring impact and most impressive anniversary year.

the most part that the quality of this place and time will develop a pull in years to come-- a pull that will bring many of them back here, again and again.

I was interested to learn, as you’ll see reflected on the timeline on pages four and five, that the Academy didn’t begin graduation exercises until 1879: 87 years after its founding. Still, I suspect that even without commencement formalities and an official class numeral, alumni have felt FA’s indelible impact for all of its 225 years. We at the Academy invite you and all of our wider school community to join us in honoring this enduring impact and most impressive anniversary year. Your support and faith place you in a long line of Fryeburg Academy stewards, dating from 1792 and spanning three centuries, for which I thank you sincerely.

A HISTORICAL TIMELINE 1833

1806

In 1806, a larger, two-story building on Fessenden Hill near the center of town is constructed with a bell that hangs in the belfry; it is the first bell to sound over the Pequawket region. This year also establishes female education at the Academy—one of the first schools in the United States to accept women.

Isabella Child, the Academy’s first preceptress, is hired this same year to instruct girls in needlework, embroidery, painting, as well as reading, writing, and English grammar.

The Civil War disrupts the Academy, and it closes from the fall of 1861 to the spring of 1862.

In November of 1901, the Alumni House is purchased by Massachusetts Alumni.

After Langdon’s retirement, Daniel Weston and John P. Thurston serve as interim preceptors in the year of 1800, followed by Reverend William Fessenden from 1800 to 1801.

Daniel Webster, a recent graduate of Dartmouth College, assumes charge in January of 1802. Webster supplements his income by copying deeds at the Registrar Office. When he completes the school year, the Trustees present Webster with an honorarium of five dollars.

Dartmouth graduate George Ricker, a teacher of broad experience, implements the first formal graduation exercises. Bowdoin graduates continue to head the Academy through the 19th century.

On June 11, 1889, the Academy’s Alumni Association is founded.

On May 28, 1851, the Academy is destroyed by fire. The interim school occupies the old meeting house in town until a brick building is rebuilt in September of 1853 by Amos Cutter in its current location.

Originally, classes are taught in private homes until 1777 when money is appropriated to build a schoolhouse. Citizens are interested in building additional schools to offer more subjects such as Latin, Greek, and English. In 1791, residents in Fryeburg, Brownfield, and Conway agree to support a new school called Fryeburg Academy. The school is incorporated in 1792.

The first preceptor is Paul Langdon who earns a salary of 52 pounds of sterling a year. He lives in a house near Fryeburg Academy at Pine Hill and retires in 1799.

Following Reverend Amos Jones Cook, who serves as preceptor from 1803 to 1833, Bowdoin graduate Henry B. Osgood, and Dartmouth graduate Amos Brown, head two separate schools within the Academy due to differing religious and political affiliations. Brown moves his school to a hall in town, and later to what is now the town library until peace is restored and the school reunites.

2001

Capital improvement plans for a new library begin and in 2002, Bion R. Cram ’33 offers $500,000 matching challenge for the new library. The Bion R. Cram Library opens in August of 2004.

In 1922, Elroy O. LaCasce becomes principal, and the school flourishes under his progressive ideas. LaCasce develops practical courses and under his leadership, graduating classes grow larger every year until the capacity of the building is taxed. In 1924 through the efforts of Harvey Dow Gibson, the Gibson Gymnasium is built.

In 1937, the Academy’s enrollment reaches over two-hundred pupils per term with three halls of instruction: Gordon Hall, the Manual Training School, and the Harvey Dow Gibson Gymnasium.

Football, a long-forgotten sport, is revived and college preparatory, vocational, and agriculture courses are offered as well as four buses to transport students from across the region. Agriculture has practical value for those students who work on their farms, particularly dairy farms. The school maintains a dairy herd of thirty-eight cows on the school farm.

Philip W. Richards serves as headmaster from 1958 to 1975. During this period, the current Frye Hall, Webster Hall, and Payson-Mulford Hall are built to serve the growing number of boarding students.

Harry True, long time teacher, coach, and athletic director returns from Maine Central Institute to head the school until 1990.

The boarding population begins to grow with more international students, including a large contingent from Bermuda.

The construction of the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center is completed.

Barry R. Acker serves as headmaster from 1990 to 1993.

Under Acker’s leadership, the Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP) is instituted, allowing student teachers to earn their master’s degree in teaching while living and teaching at Fryeburg Academy.

Curtis and Cutter Halls are built adjacent to the main building. This expansion is dedicated

by Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus H.K. Curtis to include industrial arts, home economics, and library.

FA Parents Calvin and Kathleen ’89 Hunsicker donate a significant tract of land in the intervale adjoining campus, expanding the Academy’s footprint by 63 acres and accelerating new opportunities in outdoor education and recreation.

1993

Daniel G. Lee, Jr. serves as headmaster from 1993 to 2013 and oversees a transformative growth in the Academy’s campus and boarding population. In 1994, the trustees vote to build a new science building, and the Harry K. Eastman science building is completed in 1996.

LaCasce, the beloved principal of the Academy, retires in 1955 after thirtythree years of service. He and his wife Marion remain in town, residing at the Tinker House and establish the “LaCasce scholarships” that assist many Academy students to attend college.

Ronald W. Hill serves as headmaster from 1975 to 1980. The gas crisis and worldwide economic recession of the late ’70’s prove to be financially challenging times for all Maine boarding schools.

Despite the economic hardships, the Academy wins State Championships in boys’ basketball and girls’ and boys’ skiing.

In August of 1988, the first female trustees are appointed to the board, Helen Greenwood and Laura McDill.

In 1949, the Academy trustees vote to accept the school’s first African-American student, Louise LOUISE DAVIS Davis from Virginia, making Fryeburg Academy one of four boarding schools in the northeast at the time to enroll black students.

Erin P. Mayo joins Fryeburg Academy as the first female head of school in the Academy’s history.

2005

FA’s Capital Campaign— The Phoenix Project— launches to rebuild the Gibson Gymnasium destroyed in a fire.

FA’s Alumni Association pledges $150,000 towards the rebuilding of the gym, and the Class of 1956 raises over $140,000 in 2006 towards the Phoenix Project.

Summer Term: An American Adventure

F

or the majority of Academy students, summer involves ice cream and campfires, blockbuster movies, working in the garden, paddling a canoe, and hiking in the mountains. But for many Academy students who arrive from cities and countries far away to start school each fall, those traditional New England summertime activities are things they’ve never experienced, until now.

This past August, Fryeburg Academy offered its first ever Summer Term for incoming dorm students. We focused on enrolling beginning English speakers who were new to our school. While we provided intensive academic language classes in writing and conversation each morning, it wasn’t long before the staff realized that they were on to something very special. Every afternoon, evening, and weekend were devoted to experiencing the summer through a variety of new experiences such as picking blueberries, swimming in nearby ponds, and catching butterflies.

rides at Old Orchard Beach, go mountain biking in the White Mountains, and see the top of Mount Washington. It became a way for students to apply what they learned in class while becoming comfortable with Fryeburg Academy, their teachers, and each other. It also gave them a little understanding of what it means to call Fryeburg and New England home.

Freshman Owen Zhou says, “I learned a lot of language, but I also learned how to live with different people and make new friends. I also gained a lot of knowledge outside the classroom.

Weekday mornings began in the school garden with language teacher, Mr. Huang-Dale. The students called him “Farmer Greg” because each day he had them planting, weeding, or harvesting something from the soil. Owen says he especially enjoyed the agricultural experience. “It was good exercise for the body. I now know how hard farmers work, and I appreciate more where our food comes from.”

The rest of the morning was spent in intensive English language lessons, working on college level writing, and developing conversation skills. Students kept a daily journal about every day’s experiences, and they quickly learned how to share their reflections with classmates and teachers.

“I loved having a trip every afternoon to have fun and learn something,” says David Shen, also a freshman at the Academy.

“It gave us something to talk and write about.”

Here’s an excerpt from student Dylan Liu’s journal… ”Yesterday, we went mountain climbing near Mr. Kenney’s house. It was fun, and we all had a great afternoon there. At first, we played some backyard games at Mr. Kenney’s house. We played games as a team, and we all loved it. The best part was the mountain climbing. We spent one hour to get to the top, and we all felt proud of ourselves. The weather was beautiful, so we didn’t feel tired at first. However, it was really steep when we got close to the top. We helped each other on the way. We shared

our water when someone was thirsty, and we waited for the slow climber. It was actually a challenge since I had never climbed a mountain before when I was in China. It was totally a new experience for me, and I loved it. Go, FA!!!!”

On weekends, the students visited local colleges, and they saw schools such as Bates and Bowdoin in Maine, and Emerson and Harvard in Boston. “Riding the subway in the city was fun,” says David. “I want to go back soon.”

Plans are already underway for Summer Term 2017. Dates are August 14 -28th. Students can enroll for one or two weeks, and they don’t have to be incoming Academy students to attend.

But for Owen and the others who are here now as students, the two weeks of Summer Term were paramount. “I got to know the buildings and learn a lot of language. We were also able to relax, make friends, and have enough time to get ready for school. I want to do it again next year,” he says.

Restorative Practices Come to FA

T

he opening of a school year simultaneously comforts us with its familiarity and excites us with the possibility of new beginnings. The 2016 school year at Fryeburg Academy opened with many of the usual events: ninth grade orientation, new residential student orientation, fall athletics, and teacher workshops to name a few, but it also marked the Academy’s entry into the world of restorative practices.

Restorative practices provide a framework for responding to inappropriate behaviors that represent a shift away from traditional disciplinary systems. For decades, schools have employed disciplinary practices that operate primarily by assigning punitive consequences to unacceptable behaviors. The belief that a fear of consequences prevents students from engaging in negative behaviors provides the philosophical foundation for the disciplinary systems of these schools. In the extreme, punitive disciplinary systems employ zero tolerance policies, which state that students who engage in particular behaviors will be suspended or expelled from school without exception.

In recent years, schools have moved away from punitive disciplinary systems and zero tolerance policies in particular due to research that has revealed the failures of these practices. The high recidivism rates of students disciplined through consequences

refute the argument that suspension and other punitive measures change behavior. For example, research has shown that students who get suspended are often suspended repeatedly. If the fear of suspension deterred behavior, students wouldn’t get suspended repeatedly. Research has also made it clear that once a student is suspended, the likelihood of dropping out of school increases dramatically; and in turn, students who drop out are far more likely to be incarcerated. The procession from suspension to expulsion or dropout to incarceration is often referred to as “the school to prison pipeline.” Studies of this “pipeline” consistently condemn the ineffectiveness of punitive disciplinary systems.

A restorative disciplinary approach does not necessarily eliminate consequences, but it does address behavioral issues from a much different perspective than retributive systems. Within a restorative school, students who exhibit negative behaviors reflect on what they did, how their actions impacted the community, and ways they can repair the damage caused by their behavior.

Also, restorative schools provide opportunities for students to build skills that enable them to regulate their actions better.

FA ACADEMICS and hopefully, the entire school. In addition, the restorative practice is a powerful method for both students and adults to learn about their mistakes in a positive, healthy way, allowing everyone’s voice to be heard.”

The results for schools using restorative practices have been impressive. Hunsicker will discuss the benefits for schools that practice restorative disciplinary policies whenever asked, as she did recently, “Restorative school cultures have demonstrated an increase in positive teacher-student relationships, improvement with social skills and emotional literacy, reduced aggression, and a decrease in school suspensions and expulsions.” (Source: Improving School Climate. IIRP 2014) The direction that restorative practices will take at Fryeburg Academy will unfold with time. Regardless of the direction, Huang-Dale summed up the hopes of the individuals involved recently when he wrote, “I hope that restorative practices at Fryeburg Academy allow everyone to learn about the social processes of healing. I hope that people who are hurt will receive more support in their recovery because more of the community participates in the process. I hope those who do harm in our community learn that injury affects more than just the victim, that there are consequences for harmful behavior which extend beyond the Dean’s office, and that by an honest and open discussion, we all can see ways to help each other. Often perpetrators act out of a need to belong to a community, not be separated from it. Restorative practices offer the opportunity for everyone to do right by each other and improve our interactions

so as to build a better community.”

Brooks, who has witnessed community building circles in the residential program, has already seen the benefits and anticipates still more as the year progresses. While discussing the residential program’s lead in the implementation of restorative practices, she noted, “Some of the dorm parents have already lead community building circles and incorporated them into their dorm meetings. The student proctors are attending the second training this week as they prepare for community building circles around homesickness. Now that the newness and excitement of arriving at FA are starting to fade, students are more likely to start missing home. Community circles are an opportunity to for students to see that homesickness is normal, and they are not alone. The circle provides a format for kids to talk about their homesickness and support each other. It’s pretty cool to watch kids connect and form bonds through the circle process.”

The individuals who brought restorative practices to Fryeburg Academy will meet again in the near future with anyone who is interested in identifying where restorative practices are being implemented, the successes and challenges of the implementation, and where restorative practices might be implemented going forward. The hope is that through circles and other restorative practices, students will feel even more connected to the Fryeburg Academy community while developing selfregulation skills, improved problem solving and mediation skills, strengthened communication skills, and perhaps most important of all, greater empathy for one another.

Q: Where are you from, and how long have you been attending FA? A: I’m from Newark, New Jersey. I have attended FA since my freshman year.

Q: What made you decide to attend FA? A: Honestly, the real reason why I came to Fryeburg Academy was because of financial aid, but once I got here, I realized the potential the Academy had to offer. I joined film class, lights, and sound. It was at FA that I found my passion for TV and film.

Q: What are some memorable moments during your time as a student here?

A: In my freshman year— on the last day of school — a group of girls from the dorm stayed up all night. In the early morning, we walked over to Jockey Cap to watch the sun rise. I also have fond memories of going to my first girls’ basketball game freshman year.

We played against our rival, Lake Region, and the crowd was so powerful. Everyone was cheering, and most of the crowd had their faces painted; our voices sounded like one. Although we lost that game, we had an amazing time.

Q: What do you plan to study in college? Do you have your heart set on any particular college after you graduate?

A: I want to study African/ African American Studies, and TV and Radio Broadcasting. I would love to attend Howard, but my second choice would be Washington College or Fordham University.

Q: Who inspires you?

A: People who fight for what they believe in no matter what the consequences may be. They inspire me because they don’t give up.

Even when no one agrees with them, they still find the strength to go on.

Q: What advice would you give a new freshman?

A: Relax. Everything is going to work out. High school is the time to find yourself, so just enjoy your time here while you have it.

2016 Baccalaureate Speech

I

want to thank you the Class of 2016 for the invitation to speak tonight. 45 years ago I was where you are, on the eve of my high school graduation. And just to be clear, Daniel Webster was not the headmaster.

A couple of weeks ago Jim Wilfong, Class of 1964, spoke to my American Studies class about Stow during the Civil War. Stow had a population of over a thousand people, mostly farmers who were fiercely independent, but part of a community that took care of each other; barn raisings were town events; when farmers were sick or injured neighbors pitched in milking their cows or haying their fields. Similar to Stow, you have come together as one class, a great community. Your class has worked together to accomplish great things.

To touch on a few, hard-working math students Qia Qia, Syndy, and Alex combined with many others to be State Champions.

Gifted musicians led by Alex, Cat, and Emery, brought home another State Championship. The girls in Frye Hall won the Dorm Olympics — a first! Talented and intense athletes Julia, Baha, Orie, Esme, Mckenna, Emily, Ben, Sean, Anna, Jake, Nick and many more, saw all their teams make the playoffs last fall, and continued to have success in the winter and spring seasons.

In our local community you do great things as well: Mrs. Strkyer’s senior advisees led by Jack Sullivan put on a concert to raise money for Ben Damon’s van. New clubs Girl Up and the Environmental Club, which Hannah Howard is such a big part of, raise awareness.

You’re leaving your community a better place than you found it.

Speeches this time of year tell graduates to go out into the world, to be risk-takers. If you have confidence in yourself, you’ll be successful. David Rhode, Class of 1985, lived in Lovell and as a senior led the controversial movement for an outdoor graduation. He’s

better known for being captured by the Taliban and held hostage.

In 2008 as a reporter for The New York Times he went to interview a tribal chief in Afghanistan. He was kidnapped and held for ransom. After seven months in captivity, one night he kept his guards up late playing Parcheesi and then escaped by climbing down a wall as they slept.

He was very lucky to survive. Today, David is a Fryeburg Academy trustee, an internationally acclaimed journalist and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes. As you can see, there are different degrees of risk taking. Many of you have already taken chances and risks when you went out for a new sport, auditioned for the play, or took a challenging class. Brian Fitzsimmons took Organic Chemistry because it sounded like fun. Our international students leave the safety of their culture and home to come to Fryeburg. If it’s culture shock for many of our students who come from Lawrence, Mass., imagine China or Vietnam. And it’s not just culture shock; it’s sacrifice. Tom Tran is graduating and hasn’t been back to Vietnam since he left as a freshman. In the future, accept the challenges with confidence, take the risk, but don’t end up on the news in a hostage situation.

An integral part of any community is kindness. A while ago I was dropping off some papers with Mr. Costa when his office was upstairs. Mike Costa has been here a long time and he’s an amazing trumpet player, because of that, I refer to him as Doc. Costa after Doc Severensen of the old Tonight show. As I was dropping off some papers, waiting in the hall was a very professional looking woman, a college rep. As I left I said to him, “Have a good day, Dr. Costa.” The woman jumped up and extended her hand and said, “Dr. Costa I’m so and so, nice to meet you.” I was thinking the only reason she introduced herself was she thought he has his DocFry ebu rg Ac a de m y Scene s

FA GRADUATION 2016. torate; therefore, he must be a very important person. Well, he is a very important person, but I’m the only one that calls him Doctor.

The point is to be nice, kind, and courteous to everyone regardless of who they are or how they treat you. Also, be unselfish and grateful. This class has a very nice habit where you say thank you after class, after practice, after games, and after trips. You are very polite and your parents deserve much of the credit.

You owe your parents a great deal. They have been your taxi, your support system, and your loyal cheerleader. And I know you care about them because every time you get caught texting in class, you’re always texting your Mom. I know they care about you because when your grade drops a point they email your teacher wanting to know why. You owe them many “thank-yous”, thank them tonight, and Sunday and as often as you can (next year when you need money you’ll be glad you did).

No act of kindness — no matter how small — is ever wasted.

Matt Boucher’s favorite sport is wrestling. Without a wrestling

team last winter, he volunteered and coached Pee Wee wrestling two days a week and on weekends. Nicole Thurston has been giving clinics to young field hockey players for years, just as Lexi and Nicholis have volunteered with Lil Dribblers. Jordan Kruguer collected soccer equipment to send to the Dominican Republic. Ariel has spent hours conducting tours for the Daniel Webster society as well as organizing your class. Sage and Bridget started SuperFans to support all our sport teams. Pat Carty rescues stranded motorists stuck in snow banks late at night. Who’s a better teammate than Katherine Parker or happier than Molly Eklund or friendlier than Francis Rowland? You get this, so keep on doing what you already do so well.

To sum up, take risks, all while being kind and unselfish; be actively connected to your community. Remember as you all head off in different directions, like the farmers in Stow, your common bond, Fryeburg Academy, your home, is the thread that holds you all together. We will always be here. A Sign of the Times

H

ave you ever wondered how many countries are represented

by Academy students? Or what the farthest distance boarding students travel to study at Fryeburg Academy might be?

At our recent UN Day ceremony, flags of 27 nations from across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas flew in honor of our global diversity. This year new flags from South Sudan, Egypt, and South Africa were added to our list. We like to celebrate the fact that Fryeburg Academy has had a successful history building a school community with students from around the world.

Recently, our CFO and Director of Capital Projects, Jeremy Angell, approached the International Club with a new idea to erect a signpost in front of the school that features the many countries students come from. Students in the club agreed the signpost would be a great way to recognize the Academy’s diversity and to continue the celebration, highlighted every year at our flag ceremony. As a result, a unique and collaborative, hands-on project between our international students and day students in Bob Pulito’s Machining & Fabrication and Woodworking classes launched.

During the third week of school, Pulito and his students began designing and building a steel column post to hold the signs from various countries with the assistance of students from the International Club. Local companies, HarMac Rebar & Steel and Lovell Lumber Company, provided the materials for the signpost. The metal fabrication class started the project by welding brackets on the post to hold the wooden signs.

“Students in my class machined parts, laid out, cut, drilled, threaded, shaped, and precision-welded 64 pieces of angle iron to the four-inch steel post that will support and display 32 signs,” said Pulito. “We milled, routed and sanded beautiful Eastern White Pine boards from Lovell Lumber. Once finished, the boards will be used for the signs, which will then be lettered and wood burned with the names of countries and coated with three coats of water-based exterior finish,” continued Pulito.

“The final touch for the signpost is a finial being designed by the metal class that will have the appearance of a weathervane top,” said Pulito. “We hope to get this finished, primed and painted black so we can get it in the ground before it freezes.”

You may be familiar with the famous road sign just a few miles away in Lynchville, Maine pointing toward the surrounding towns of Denmark, Norway, China, Sweden, Mexico, and Poland. Our campus will soon have a sign of its own, recognizing students from those towns, but also from the countries from which they are named! Collaborative projects like this one offer students from many backgrounds a chance to cooperate and learn about each other. We at Fryeburg Academy believe that by working together, we learn about each other and about the world in which we live. In an increasingly shrinking global society, our connections through language, culture, economy, and friendship make us stronger and more sustainable as a school and community.

New Members of the Fryeburg Academy Community MS. LAURA AYER joined Fryeburg Academy this year as the director of communications.

Following a decade in corporate marketing, Ayer decided to apply her professional skills in an educational setting and became director of marketing and communications at Gann Academy in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Ayer’s most recent position was at the Kingsley Montessori School in Boston in the same role, where she successfully assisted the school in their recruiting and retention efforts. Ayer resides at the Evans House on campus and enjoys hiking with her four-year-old Pug named Murphy.

MS. ABBY CHAFEE joined Fryeburg Academy this year as an assistant director of admissions. Chaffee comes to the Academy after five years at the Mount Washington Observatory, where she held a variety of roles crucial to institutional health, most recently serving as director of advancement and membership. She is married to Chris Chaffee ’03, FA’s tennis coach. In addition to her admission role, Chaffee and her husband reside in Hastings Hall as dorm parents.

MS. JEANETTE CHAPPELL joined Fryeburg Academy this year as a math teacher. Prior to joining the Academy, Chappell spent a decade as a civil engineer in the private sector, where she worked on residential and commercial projects and was responsible for design, permitting, and construction oversight. Chappell is married to alumnus Tait Chappell ’94. In her free time, Chappell enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, running, and time with her family. She looks forward to becoming more involved at FA and has enjoyed getting to know students and staff.

MS. DAWN GALE joined Fryeburg Academy this year as FA’s academy fund and alumni relations director. Dawn previously held this role for the school from 1990-1998 as the first full-time Director of Alumni and Development, working on the capital campaign that resulted in the Eastman Science Center and implementing the school’s first planned giving program. Since her departure in 1998, Dawn has served as vice president for Ski Sundries and Supplies, a successful local provisioner of winter accessories based in Fryeburg, ME. She is a graduate of Colby

College ’85, an alumna of the Academy ’81, as well as an alumni parent (Jared ’09 and Devin ’11).

MS. BETH ROSS joined Fryeburg Academy this year as an assistant director of admissions. Returning to Maine last year after two decades of living in California, Beth has been a leader in public service, having directed and done significant fundraising for numerous nonprofit environmental and community organizations. In the several years before relocating to Fryeburg, Ross was an associate director for external relations at Stanford’s Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford, as well as the development director at the Riekes Center for Human Enhancement in Menlo Park. Ross’s daughter, Siena McMahon, enrolled at FA last fall and is a senior this year.

MR. RYAN VINCENT joined Fryeburg Academy this year as a special education instructor. Following several years working with youth and families as a residential case manager in Vermont, Vincent moved to Bethel, Maine with his wife and newborn son. Vincent graduated from Champlain College in Burlington, VT with a bachelors in Criminal Justice and later obtained his certification in Special Education. Vincent’s most recent position was at the Laraway Youth and Family Services, where he case managed youth in a behavioral residential setting. While he isn’t teaching, Vincent enjoys many outdoor activities including skiing, boating, and traveling, along with being a passionate home brewer and chicken wing sauce creator for the all important New England sporting events.

DR. WARREN ZIEGLER joined Fryeburg Academy this year as a physics teacher.

Ziegler spent many years in Massachusetts as a consultant for the energy industry, where he developed energy efficient technologies for the Department of Energy and the private sector, and earned patents in solid oxide fuel cell technologies. Later in his career, Ziegler began teaching mathematics and Physics to middle school and high school students at the Weston Public Schools in Weston, Massachusetts as a substitute teacher. His most recent teaching position was at Burlington High School, where Ziegler taught AP Calculus, Geometry and Algebra, and led professional development activities until his move to Fryeburg with his wife and daughter.

Mackenzie Buzzell ’17

One of 20 Finalists for the 2016-17 Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program

e are pleased to announce that Mackenzie Buzzell ’17 of Fryeburg Academy has been selected one of 20 finalists for the 2016-17 Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program from across New England by Positive Coaching AllianceNew England (PCA-NE).

PCA honors outstanding high school athletes nationwide who contribute to a positive, character-building sports environment.

PCA’s Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program honors those who, in keeping with PCA culture, “do the right thing” and embody the Triple-Impact Competitor ethos of working to improve oneself, teammates, and the game as a whole.

Buzzell who is now a senior this year at the Academy, competes

in girls’ basketball, soccer, and softball. She was selected from the more than 1,500 high school athletes nationwide who completed applications, consisting of essays and at least three recommendations from coaches, school administrators, and individuals familiar with them as embodying Triple-Impact Competitor principles.

FA’s Golf Team Earns South B Sportsmanship Award and Qualifies for Team State Championship

A’s golf team qualified for the Class B Team State Championships held on Saturday, October 8th at the Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro, ME. The team’s record for the regular season was 7-4-1, finishing in 7th place at States, where they were also honored with the South B Sportsmanship Award.

“Our team continues to get better every year,” said Coach Dutton ’90. “I’m proud of them for working hard and showing great progress. And more importantly, earning the Sportsmanship Award this year, is a real testament to how these student-athletes conduct themselves on and off the course.”

Tyler Worcester ’17 went on to place second in the Class B State Championship, and he’ll be competing in the New England High School Golf Championship next spring.

Buzzell’s hard work on the field and in the classroom has certainly paid off. Buzzell has been an outstanding student-athlete at Fryeburg Academy since her arrival as a freshman in 2013. She’s been on the honor roll all three years with two of those semesters as high honors. Buzzell even earned the Student of the Year award during her junior year.

As finalists, Buzzell and the other student-athletes were recognized at a pregame ceremony before the August 31 Boston Red Sox/Tampa Bay game and presented them with commemorative t-shirts, Red Sox hats, and tickets to the game, plus award certificates and the PCA book, “Elevating Your Game.” PCA-New England will celebrate the finalists through a combination of events, awards, mentoring, and sharing their stories throughout the 2016-17 academic year.

THREE-PEAT CHAMPIONSHIP FOR ULTIMATE FRISBEE

U

ltimate frisbee started at Fryeburg Academy as a club in 2008 by Chris and Emily Strahler, and for the first couple years, it was an all-boys club. However, as students started to realize how enjoyable and energetic the sport was, the team grew to become co-ed. Ultimate frisbee offered a unique opportunity for genders to play together and work together equally. The sport is played without referees, and all fouls are called by the players and discussed between the teams without the coach’s input. Sportsmanship is just as important to the game as the frisbee. Up until 2014, there were only co-ed teams, but that year there were enough girls to form a separate girl’s team as well. The following year, Fryeburg Academy transitioned their ultimate frisbee club into a varsity sport, making our high school the first school in Maine to recognize ultimate frisbee as more than just a club.

In my past three years on the team, it has grown immeasurably, quickly turning into one of the most popular sports at Fryeburg Academy. It has also become one of the more decorated.

In 2014 our Femme Fatale girls team, which at the time was only a club sport, took on Cape Elizabeth in the Maine State Championship at the Cumberland Fairgrounds and became the first ever girl’s division Maine champions. Led by Sydney Andreoli, Erin Friburg, and Thu Pham, we knew that a state title at the end of our first year of being a women’s team was a great sign for the future.

Later that year, I vividly remember being handed my state jacket from my coaches Chris and Emily Strahler, saying that as the only freshman, that they hope to see three more championships follow this one in my high school career. And so far they have been true to their words; two more championships were earned and claimed by the girls Ultimate team.

In 2015, we became much more connected and enthusiastic. Bridget Bailey, Abby Davis, Sydney Andreoli and Esmeralda Hernandez left it all on the field, bringing us to victory against Cumberland for the 2015 State title. In 2016, with our team made up of eight seniors coming straight off of a 24-hour senior project graduation trip, we entered states with excitement.

Seniors Bridget Bailey, Abby Davis, Kaylee Barboza, Esmeralda Hernandez, Anna Mahanor, Emery O’Connell, Katherine Parker, and Zinna Hansler were vital in our success against Cumberland once again in the Championship at the Wainwright Sports Complex in Portland.

The Fryeburg ultimate team won the state title to end another successful year. However, the 2017 season will soon be upon us. Losing eight seniors and both the head girls and boys coaches (We are still looking for coaches, please contact FA if interested!!). We have a lot to do to prepare for the season and to defend our undefeated regular season record. With five seniors for the upcoming season, our team is looking for the younger players to keep the team growing and to carry on in future years. But for now, the team knows this year we’re going to have to work harder, stronger, and with more passion than ever before if we want the 2017 championship.

It’s All that Jazz!

all’s inspirational splendor is on display and Arts students can be seen filming, painting, and snapping pictures all around campus. Photo students can even earn college credit!

The stage’s curtains have opened signaling the start of another school year not only serving as a home for theater and stage technical students (except when they are attending monthly Portland Stage Company performances) but also as hosts for the numerous concerts, films, and acts in the spectacular Leura Hill Performing Arts Center.

With so many offerings during the school day, we are excited that our programming has now expanded to include after-school opportunities. Twice a week, students can learn Hip Hop and Modern Dance moves, led by Jeannie Limmer and Emily Holden.

Additionally, Phil Marshall has returned for his second year, spearheading a String Ensemble on Monday nights. We are also pleased to welcome Betsy Hauck as our musical director. She brings a long, rich commitment to the craft of theater with her involvement in the Cape Cod Community as well as with school student productions on Martha’s Vineyard. This year’s musical show dates are April 12-14th.

As with any year, music students have already been busy practicing, auditioning and even performing. They opened with their

highly anticipated annual show at the Fryeburg Fair featuring the Rock Band, Eclectic, Vocal Jazz, and the FA Band. Special recognition to Taylor Kruger, Jan Adil, Ciara Neidlinger, and Samara Morris whose successful auditions earned them inclusion in the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and to Dominic Orlando who placed into the All-State Jazz Band.

One of the most exciting events was the annual November Jazz Artist Residency featuring five-time Grammy-nominated pianist and vocalist Karrin Allyson, who presented workshops on vocal improvisation, performance, and working with a rhythm section.

The culminating event was a fabulous evening featuring FA students performing with Ms. Allyson.

A Message from the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office Sometimes an opportunity arises that feels right and is too good to pass up.

I have returned to the Alumni and Advancement Office after 18 years! Some of you may remember me as the alumni and development director from 19901998. I met and worked with so many wonderful people, organized events, and reunions, headed up the annual fund, and worked on the campaign to build DIRECTOR OF THE the Eastman Science Center. Since 1998, ACADEMY FUND AND I have worked in a family ski business ALUMNI RELATIONS and raised my two great kids (Jared ’09 Dawn Gale ’81 and Devin ’11). This opportunity to come back to work at FA was a welcome and exciting offer as I have remained a part of the school over the years, volunteering and serving on different committees. I am happy to be back fulltime in the alumni and advancement chair.

2017 is an important year for Fryeburg Academy! I invite you to join us as we celebrate this proud and historic institution’s 225th anniversary in 2017. We are planning a great year of events that will include a special ceremony in February, regional reunions and, of course, our Alumni Reunion Weekend, June 9, 10 & 11. DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD JENNIFER BARTLETT ’93 Biology and Photography Teacher

F

ryeburg Academy honors an alumnus/alumna each year through the Distinguished Alumni Award. This award honors those alums who have rendered meritorious service to the school and/or community.

I am very honored to be here this evening to present one of our alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Every year Fryeburg Academy’s Alumni Association Board accepts alumni nominations who are outstanding community members and who have made significant contributions to both the Academy and the community at large.

This year, we have chosen to give this award to a member of the Class of 1961, Richard “Dick” Thompson. While at Fryeburg Academy, Dick was a member of the football and baseball teams as well as the Saco Valley Farmers Club. After graduating, he joined the Army where he was educated in computers and served time in Laos. After Dick’s discharge from the Army, he was able to utilize his computer skills at IBM. Dick’s nominator stated the following about his character, “It is just in his nature to help where and when it is needed. He is just as generous with individuals who are in need, but with all of his giving, he does it quietly, in the background.”

Dick, along with his wife Hazel, are always contributing to Fryeburg Academy. They have given several monetary donations, including support of the capital campaign for the Ada Cram Wadsworth Arena; purchased theater seats in the Performing Arts Center; contributed to the music department; and organized the effort to outfit the library with computer stations. Dick has even donated property, providing access to the new sport fields off of Howe Street. One special donation that is near and dear to my heart (because I am a member of the science department) is Dick’s donation of 24 laptops and a transportable storage station after hearing about the Academy’s desire for computers. This generous donation is used by all of our classrooms and greatly enhanced the curriculum. And just so you know, Dick, they are still in use today.

Beyond the Academy, Dick has given back to his community, supporting the Fryeburg and Parsonsfield Historical Societies, and Porter and Sacopee Valley Schools. Please join me in thanking him for all he has done and congratulating him on this great honor.

2016 Hall of Excellence Inductees

F

ryeburg Academy Hall of Excellence is pleased to announce the 2016 Inductees!

This is the seventh group inducted into the Hall of Excellence and includes Clayton Burnell, Class of ’47, June Walker Hammond, Class of ’54, Alan Bennett and George Weston, both Class of ’60, Barry Woodbrey, Class of ’62, Hillary Stacy Allocco, Class of ’99 and Harry “Pinky” True as a significant Supporter. The ceremony was conducted during Fryeburg Academy Homecoming, on Saturday, October 22.

CLAYTON M. BURNELL Class of 1947 Clayton was a four-year member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. During his freshman year in 1943, he received the Freshman Speaking Prize for “Dunkirk”, a one-act play, and served on the student council his sophomore year. In February of 1945, Clayton and six other Fryeburg Academy athletes enlisted in the Navy, and returned to the Academy a year later to complete high school.

In 1946 as a junior, Clayton led the basketball team to the Western Maine playoffs with only one loss. He was also on the baseball team when it tied for the Western Maine Conference Championship in 1947.

Clayton went on to receive his degree in chemical engineering at the University of Maine, working for Hammond’s Lumber in Hiram during the summers. He was student president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 1952-53 while at Orono, and participated in this organization throughout his career. Clayton worked for Central Maine Power and Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY, prior to moving to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he worked for Kodak Hawaii and played golf, winning his club’s championship in 1957. Soon after, Clayton moved to San Francisco, where he remained through his retirement in 1989, working for Eastman Kodak Company in its Health Science Division.

Since 1990, Clayton has participated in senior aerobics exercise classes, and is a volunteer instructor for the same in the Millbrae and Burlingame, CA, areas.

Clayton and his self-proclaimed “greatest achievement” — wife Gloria, FA ’49 — live in California and visit his boyhood hometown of Hiram every summer.

JUNE WALKER HAMMOND Class of 1954 June was a wonderful athlete who played field hockey, basketball, and softball during her four years at Fryeburg Academy.

During her junior year, she led the field hockey team to a league championship. In addition to sports, June involved herself in public speaking, chorus, one-act plays, and Y-Teens, where she served as president. June earned National Honor Society membership during her junior and senior years and received numerous awards in Latin. June attended Wellesley College and earned a degree in economics. While at Wellesley, she continued to play field hockey and golf, making great contributions to the teams.

On June 23, 1962, she married the love of her life, Ed Hammond, and subsequently honeymooned, tenting across the United States. June and Ed later moved to East Lyme, Connecticut, and both taught at the Lillie B. Haynes Elementary School until 1977. After retiring, they moved back to Maine to raise their three children: Valerie (Hammond) Tripp ’81, Gregory ’82 and Todd Hammond ’83.

Ed and June had many adventures traveling and camping with their family. They also enjoyed special times at their Sebago Lake cottage. June sold real estate with Bill Severance in Lovell, and afterward went to work at the Fryeburg Fair, serving as secretary for the next 25 years. June also

substituted occasionally for math classes at Fryeburg Academy. She retired in 2012.

June involved herself in the Fryeburg community for many years as a member and president of the Library Club. She worked in the Fryeburg extension office for 20 years, and the Fryeburg Academy Alumni Association where she was president for two years. June was also a trustee of Fryeburg Academy for 12 years.

June and Ed spent their winter months in Florida, returning to the Fryeburg area in the summers to enjoy their well-deserved retirement and spend time with children, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

June sadly lost Ed last year, but her family keeps her busy and involved with their life.

GEORGE WESTON Class of 1960 George Weston’s leadership generated a lasting impact on the Fryeburg Community.

During his four years at the Academy, George was involved in the One Act Plays, Senior Drama, the Student Council, and served as class president. He was unable to play sports due to polio yet still managed to be involved by serving as the team manager.

After graduating from the University of New Hampshire, Mr. Weston came back to Fryeburg to farm with his father John F. Weston. George’s commitment to the Fryeburg community included serving as a town Selectman for 17 years and as the chair of the Bradley Park Committee. In addition, George has been a trustee and moderator at the First Congregational Church, a member of the Memorial Day Parade Committee, and a member and president of the Fryeburg Academy Alumni Association. Mr. Weston (George) served on the water company, the Western Maine Forest Nursery and the Maine Vegetable, and Small Fruit Growers Association. Currently, he is involved as the Livestock Chairman Trustee, 2nd Vice president for the Fryeburg Fair, and a Frye-

burg Business Association member.

Weston’s Farm, LLC is now operated by George, his wife, Laurie, and son, John.

They have developed Stark’s Hill into one of the most picturesque set of Nordic ski trails in Maine. These trails are also used by many in the nearby communities for walking, mountain biking, and home for Academy Teams.

ALAN BENNETT Class of 1960 Alan received six letters for his participation in soccer, football, basketball, and baseball.

Due to a concussion, however; he was only able to play football a year but played basketball and baseball for all four years. Alan was captain his senior year in basketball and received Most Valuable Player in baseball. He was elected secretary of his class during his sophomore year and advanced to vice president in his junior and senior year. In addition, during his junior year, he was elected to the National Honor Society and served as president in his senior year.

Alan attended Bowdoin College, where he played a year of basketball and baseball and earned his A.B. Degree in Economics.

From 1964 to 1994, Alan spent 30 years as owner of Bennett Transportation, dealing with bulk milk transportation and school and charter busing. Since his retirement, he has kept busy bookkeeping for his wife and daughter’s retail shop, “Spruce Hurricane” in North Conway and helping his grandson with bookkeeping for Bennett Transportation as well as being an investment manager and accountant.

In addition, Alan organized, played, and coached the North Fryeburg Eagle adult men’s softball league for over 10 years. He is a former selectman for the Town of Lovell, member of the budget committee and planning board. He is the past president of Paris Farmers Union and the Maine Industrial Milk Haulers Association.

Alan has been trustee of the Fryeburg Fair Association since 1980, as well as Trustee of Fryeburg Academy from 2000 to 2012. He is now Trustee Emeritus.

Alan and his wife Nettie currently spend the winters in a warmer climate. They always return in the summers to Fryeburg through fair time with their daughter Amber and grandchildren.

BARRY WOODBREY Class of 1962 Barry was a four-year member of the football team and also played baseball. As team captain his senior year, he lead the ’61 team to a win over Gould Academy for the 1st time in 17 years! Barry had the distinction of being singled out by Coach Buck Austin at a pep rally for being the only team member to make the honor roll!

Barry was also a member of the Student Council and received 2nd place in the Maine Student Craftsman’s Association his senior year.

After graduating from Fryeburg Academy, Mr. Woodbrey went into what would be a 22-year career in the Air Force. After serving a three-year tour in Guam, he was transferred to Andrews Air Force Base and attached to the 89th Special Missions.

In 1974, Mr. Woodbrey received the Presidential Service Badge for his service as crew chief for Air Force One, where he served under four presidents — Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. Also, Barry received the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in under 20 years, which is — in itself — a great accomplishment.

Barry is husband to Kathleen (Stevens) ’62 and a father of three children: Barry, Jr., Michael, and Carole. He has been a youth football, baseball and basketball coach and actively involved in his church council.

HILLARY STACY ALLOCCO Class of 1999 Hillary was a 12-sport athlete for Fryeburg Academy playing field hockey, basketball, and softball.

During her career, she was inducted to the Western Maine Conference All Conference team in field hockey and basketball.

She was a field hockey captain her senior year and captained her softball and basketball teams as a junior and a senior.

In addition to her athletic career, Hillary was selected to represent the Academy at Girls State, was a National Honor Society Member, and received two Latin awards and an English Merit Award.

After graduating, Hillary went on to have a remarkable athletic career at Wells College. In field hockey, she was a four-time team MVP; named an AWCC Rookie of the Year as a freshman; invited

to join the All-State Team; recognized as the AWCC Player of the Year; and received the Distinguished Athlete Award twice.

Hillary is the current record holder at Wells College for points in a career and most assists. In addition to playing for the field hockey team and also being a twoyear captain, she played softball and was a team captain and a member of the AWCC All Conference Team.

Now married to her husband Luke, this mother of three has volunteered countless hours to the Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation programs, the New England Visually Impaired Ski Festival, and to the Denmark Lions Club. As the owner and operator of her own daycare center, Hillary continues to use education skills with children.

HARRY G. TRUE Significant Supporter Harry G. True joins the Hall of Excellence as a Significant Supporter. In his 37 years in education, 1953-1990, Mr. True served as a teacher and coach at Porter High School, Gardiner High School, Lake Region and Skowhegan. He arrived at Fryeburg Academy in 1964 and served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and assistant headmaster until he left to be the headmaster at MCI in 1976. Three years later in 1979, he returned to Fryeburg Academy as the Headmaster and also coached basketball until he retired in 199 and won the State Championship in 1976.

Harry’s success and passion for basketball — as well as his love for high school athletics — are well represented by his induction into The USM Hall of Fame, MCI Hall of Fame, and the Gorham High School Hall of Fame. In addition, he has been recognized with the Bob Brown Contributor Award, The MABS Contributor Award, Citation for Distinguished Professional Service, The MIAAA Distinguished Service Award, and the WMC Outstanding Contributor Award in 1990 won the State Championship.

his year at our opening Friday reception, we honored Fryeburg Academy alumni who are veterans of the U.S. military. Over 200 people gathered for the event. Head of School Erin Mayo welcomed guests with these remarks: Hello and good evening! I welcome all alumni and Academy friends gathered here tonight to kickoff Reunion Weekend, and I offer a very special and grateful welcome to our honored guests, the Fryeburg Academy alumni who have collectively served in every branch of the United States military.

I want to tell you about a day last September when I had the incredible honor of officiating at the Academy graduation of a member of the class of 1963. At the front end of the Vietnam War and in the December of his senior year, Harold Roberts enlisted in the Marines. He was stationed overseas, returning to the states and civilian life nearly ten years later. Harry’s decision to serve our country would seem to have cancelled the possibility of receiving a high school diploma. But in fact, it had only delayed it a bit.

I want you to know that before I had even finished reading his name, and well before Harry had begun his walk to the podium, our students leapt to their feet, offering the most genuine and spontaneous applause I may ever have seen.

Then they took their seats. And as Harry offered us his reflections, which were wonderful, I looked at the front four rows of kids—our seniors, young men and women only two months away from the same phase in their senior year, as the one that in Harry’s, saw his departure from Fryeburg Academy and his enlistment.

It was not the first time, but probably the sharpest one, that I reflected on how many alums—in peacetime and in war—choose the path of service, or have it chosen for them and answer the call.

I think in schools that this choice is largely unsung. Upon graduation, so many more classmates are readying for college, employment, and general civilian adult life; the choice to serve, to protect this civilian life… it can get eclipsed. And those alums who may enter the military well after high school—often, their alma maters don’t even know.

So tonight, your alma mater, Fryeburg Academy, honors and celebrates you. We are in our third century. We have sent uncounted numbers of students forward to defend American ideals— education for all being one of them. You here tonight are among these numbers. It is not enough to say ‘thank you,’ but it is not enough to say anything: any words, though a start, are inadequate. So, knowing that, I say thank you anyway. The Academy is proud and humbled by your gift of service to our nation.

In closing, I wish also and especially to recognize the gift and sacrifice of those veterans who can’t be here tonight, and those men and women we have lost. Please join me in a moment of silence to honor all.

Barry Woodbrey ’62 Defying all Odds

F

or Barry Woodbrey ’62, attending high school during the Vietnam era was no small feat for young men like himself who were constantly faced with being drafted for the war. Fortunately for him, Woodbrey was able to complete all four years at FA, graduating in 1962.

Woodbrey recounts one of his fondest memories while at FA. “One [memory] that really prides me and was a total surprise was during my junior year,” said Woodbrey. “It was the night of the sportsman banquet and Roger Roberts, my best friend, never showed up so I decided to stay home. Then out of nowhere, there was a knock on my door, and there stood Mr. Hammond and Coach Austin who came to get me.”

That evening, unbeknown to Woodbrey, would be the night when he was named the team captain of his football team. Woodbrey went on to lead the team to victory over Gould Academy for the first time in 17 years during his memorable senior year.

Woodbrey’s strong work ethic on the field at the Academy also carried over to the classroom where he made the honor roll and participated in the Student Council. He attributes Coach Austin and Mr. Walker, his shop teacher, as being the most influential during his time at FA. “I met Coach Austin during my sophomore year and during my junior and senior year, I [really admired] Mr. Walker, my shop teacher. What a craftsman!” exclaimed Woodbrey. “The first year, we had woodworking, metalworking and later electricity and auto.

Since I wasn’t that good at woodworking, I stuck with auto shop my senior year.”

Woodbrey’s auto-shop experience at FA proved to be an important introduction into the world of auto mechanics that served him well in his future career in the Air Force. After graduating, Woodbrey made the decision to join the armed forces rather than being drafted like many of his friends.

“Here’s another funny story,” continued Woodbrey smiling.

“When I was a senior, I took the Air Force test and when I went down to be inducted, they claimed they couldn’t find my scores.

I had all the intentions to go in the airborne command post, but since they made me retest, I didn’t do as well as I had the first time.

They said, ‘Sir, you are going to be a mechanic.’ And I said, well — ok — that’s good,” said Woodbrey as he chuckled.

Despite his abrupt change in career plans, Woodbrey went on to accomplish what few men or women are able to achieve in a 22-year career with the Air Force. After serving three tours overseas on the island of Guam, Woodbrey was stationed to Andrews Air Force Base where he quickly climbed up the ranks, earning the position of crew chief for the Air Force One and later receiving the Presidential Badge of Service in 1974.

“I served under four different presidents: Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan,” said Woodbrey. “When Reagan came to office, that’s when the aircraft had some dignity again. He got rid of all of Carter’s [overthe-top] decor. I really liked working for Reagan, continued Woodbrey nostalgically. “I still remember stocking Air Force One with his favorite jelly beans.”

Not only did Woodbrey attain one of the highest ranks as an aircraft mechanic during his career, he also flew over 20 bombing missions during the Vietnam War. “I remember one of the later flights that I decided not to go on at the last minute,” said Woodbrey. “It just so happens that particular plane during take-off went into a nose dive and never recovered. The plane and the entire crew were lost that day.”

Today, Woodbrey and his wife Kathleen (Stevens) ’62 reside in Fryeburg, where he still enjoys tinkering with engines. They have three children, Barry Jr., Michael and Carol. If you happen to drive

by Elm Street on any given day, you’ll most likely find him working in his garage on one of his latest restoration projects — a ’67 Mustang and ’54 Ford Crestline.

Woodbrey is an active member in the community, serving as a volunteer for the town’s Planning Board, a member of the Fryeburg Fish and Game and a range safety officer. When asked what advice he would give an incoming freshman to FA, he thoughtfully sat back in his chair, pausing for a minute and said, “Absorb everything that’s given to you, but have an independent mind of your own. Too often, people tend to think what a teacher or the news says is always fact. It may or may not be true.”

And that, of course, is Barry Woodbrey through and through.

An independent mind — a determined individual that despite all odds, earned one of the highest positions as an aircraft mechanic during his notable 22-year career in the Air Force.

MARSHALL ST. CLAIR ’67: “After a varied career in the USAF and Entertainment Industry, I retired to Montgomery, AL, in 2009 to be a caregiver to a long time friend. She passed in Jan. 2014 and I moved to West Palm Beach, FL. I fully expected this to be my final move. Last October I went to Southeast Asia (Philippines) to visit my step brothers and sister-in-law as well as grandchildren and meet my great-grandchildren.

I returned to the states this past April and in June returned to the Philippines where I now enjoy spoiling the great-grandkids.”

JANET TAYLOR SCHMIDT ’71 retired from the US Fish and Wildlife Service (Department of the Interior) in December of 2013. Last position served was Supervisory Park Ranger for Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Soldotna, Alaska.

SEAN KEOUGH ’74 won medals in all five events in the 60+ Division at the 2016 USASA National Snowboard Championships last April at Copper Mountain in Colorado. Sean won gold and the National Championship in the Halfpipe and Snowboard Cross events, silver in the Slalom and Giant Slalom events, and bronze in the Slopestyle event. In the process he also accumulated enough points to capture the overall points title.

I have transitioned our home (built in 1950) to net-zero energy, and will have a short documentary coming out soon, showing how everyone can reduce their energy consumption to save money and live more comfortably. I hope everyone is doing well!
