L

os españoles tenemos colgado el sambenito de haber llegado tarde a muchas cosas, a ésta también, pero merece la pena subirse al carro.

Me refiero a la tendencia, ya muy generalizada, de los supermercados europeos de priorizar la producción local o autóctona sobre la importada.

Por esto, aplaudo la idea del Consum que acaban de inaugurar al lado de mi casa de ‘Hacer País’, y que nadie se tome esta expresión como una politización del acto de compra, sino como una actitud moralmente responsable.

No se trata de revolucionar las estructuras o criticar el orden mercantil, sino de regular con nuestros derechos como ciudadanos-consumidores la oferta y ejercer nuestra presión de compra sobre la gran distribución.

El mundo globalizado nos ha cambiado, y al final no se trata de proteccionismo tal y como lo entiende Mr. Trump, se trata de coherencia y de respeto medioambiental. Se trata de que el PIB, que tanto le debe al sector agroalimentario siga su buen curso. Se trata de aportar un grano de arena al mundo que dejaremos a nuestros hijos.

Lo llevo viendo en Europa desde hace muchos años, sobre todo los que pasé en Inglaterra, donde la bandera británica ondeaba en mitad del lineal para avisar al consumidor de que las fresas de verano ya habían llegado o las British potatoes eran las únicas que el cliente podía escoger. Nuestros vecinos galos son maestros en ello, Dinamarca ejerce la misma política en

of its chains and in the rest of Europe there is now a multitude of examples.

The globalised world has changed us and, in the end, the issue does not lie in protectionism as Mr. Trump understands it: it has to do with coherence and respect for the environment. The idea is to protect your local surroundings, to ensure that this famous ‘Empty Spain’ does not become even emptier, that transport minimises the CO or NO emissions and that the producers can survive with a few extra cents. The idea is that the GDP, which owes so much to the agri-food sector, continues to show good progress. The idea is to do our bit for the world we will leave to our children.

o se sabe si llegaremos a tiempo porque los costes productivos de los países que juegan en el tablero europeo pegan fuerte en mano de obra, pero algo se mueve en el mercado interior.

Se acaban de presentar las previsiones de manzana y pera en Cataluña y de lo que más se está hablando es de que existe una verdadera preocupación por el futuro de las producciones españolas, y no me refiero a la competencia de Italia o Francia, sino a la que, de hecho, ya representa el gigante polaco.

Lo positivo es que a priori parece que este año habrá una producción menor, pero tendremos que estar muy atentos porque Polonia juega con la gran ventaja de los costes de producción Se sabe que en Polonia se está llevando a cabo una alta especialización tecnológica y varietal que nos puede afectar a todos los europeos gravemente.

Habrá que decidir a este respecto y definir un plan, pero en cualquier caso nosotros también contamos con nuestra estrategia de cambio.

Tras una recesión muy importante, por la reconversión a hueso en el Bajo Segre y la zona de la Plana de Lleida, hemos optado por plantaciones jóvenes de manzana que intenten diferenciarse por la proximidad y la uniformidad, tanto en Lleida como en Girona bajo la IGP. De manzana a hueso y de hueso a manzana, ¿por qué arrancaron hace una década?

En Lleida no arrancamos manzanas porque no se adaptaban sino porque nos dimos cuenta de que en el Bajo Segre la fruta de hueso se adapta muy bien, tenía mucho recorrido y era un negocio rentable.

Cuénteme algo más de este plan o estrategia a la que ha hecho referencia.

Desde hace tres años Cataluña mantiene un ritmo de crecimiento de entre 300 y 400 hectáreas anuales, que se distribuyen entorno a unas 250 en Lleida y 150 en Girona. En el Plà de Urgell se está llevando a cabo una reconversión lenta pero segura con clones y variedades que se adaptan a nuestra altitud, con Galas y Fujis que pueden aportar color, así como ciertas Goldens de mayor dureza y penetromía frente a las viejas variedades que teníamos.

Lo mismo sucede en zonas prepirenaicas, y contamos con el proyecto de Nufri en Soria en una importante altitud, que es una de las características que tiene nuestro competidor italiano.

Otro de los proyectos que funciona bien es la Crips Pink, que mantiene una excelente coloración gracias a la diferencia de temperatura entre el día y la noche. Todo sin olvidar el importantísimo proyecto de colaboración con Nueva Zelanda de Fruit Futur, el IRTA, Actel y la IGP Poma de Girona, que aportará variedades para manzanas adaptadas a zonas climáticas cálidas. ¿Cuándo veremos los resultados de esta reconversión?

Entre 5 y 10 años. Estoy seguro de que seremos más competitivos en Galas y en todas las inversiones que se realizan en altitud.

Por eso debemos competir con un producto de calidad y de proximidad, como ya se hace en otros países como Francia.

Creo que debemos caminar por la senda de sensibilización territorial y que será una tendencia en auge.

Y la última, pregunta ¿Se podía haber previsto de alguna manera el problema de la falta de calibres en la fruta de hueso?

No existía alternativa, o recolectabas la fruta o la fruta maduraba. Los árboles habían sido bien aclarados y la fruta no cogía calibre.

The apple and pear forecasts in Catalonia have just been presented and people are talking most about the real concern regarding the future of Spanish productions and I am not referring to the Italian and French competition, but to what the Polish giant already represents.

The positive side is that, a priori, it seems that this year production will be lower, but we will have to pay close attention because Poland is playing with an important advantage regarding production costs.

It is well known that in Poland a significant technological and variety specialisation is being carried out that could seriously affect all Europeans.

A decision must be reached on this respect and a plan defined, but in any case we also have our own strategy of change. After a very important recession, due to the conversion to stone fruit in the regions of Bajo Segre and the Plana de Lerida, we have opted for young apple plantations with an attempt to become differentiated due to their local nature and their uniformity, both in Lerida and in Girona, under the PGI. From apples to stone fruits and from stone fruits to apples, why did they grub the trees out a decade ago?

When will we see the results of this conversion?

In 5 to 10 years’ time. I am sure that we will be more competitive in Galas and in all investments that are made in altitude.

But not in labour.

In Lerida we didn’t grub out apple trees because there weren’t adapted, but because we realised that in the Bajo Segre, stone fruit adapted very well, it had plenty of room for expansion and it was a profitable business.

For this reason we must compete with a quality, local product, as occurs in other countries like France. I think that we must walk the route of territorial awareness and that this will be a rising trend.

Tell me something else about this plan or strategy that you referred to.

And the last question: could the problem of the shortage in good sized stone fruit have been foreseen?

Antonio Cerveró, el director técnico de la empresa, explicó que en la finca se realizan los ensayos de sus productos en todo tipo de cultivo: hortícolas, cítricos, frutas tropicales y frutas de hueso, vid, patatas y cultivos de hoja, entre otros. Además, es un centro de formación para trabajadores de la compañía.

They also took advantage of the occasion to inaugurate the most sustainable building in the world, which received the First World Prize for Excellence in Sustainable Architectonic Design.

Idai Nature, dedicated to preparing natural insecticides and biostimulants for the production of fruit and vegetables without leaving any chemical residue, is celebrating its tenth birthday exporting to 35 countries, with an annual invoicing of 20 million euros and the future challenge of being present in one hundred countries in 2023.

The key to Idai Nature’s success has been to never stop innovating, “all the profits from the first years were dedicated to continue investigating to develop new products. To continue growing, we had to offer farmers natural, effective solutions that would allow them to become more profitable and to gain access to more markets,” states Carlos Ledó, CEO and founder of the company.

The event was attended by the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, who opened the sustainable building and the Mayor of Pobla de Vallbona, Josep Vicent.

The CEO of Sapec Agro Business, Eric Van Innis, also attended, emphasising the enormous task performed by Idai Nature, which has formed part of the activity of the Sapec Agro Business Group since January 2018, and today is considered the leading company in natural innovative solutions for environmentally friendly farming.

Before the official event, the guests were able to visit Naturalia, Idai Nature’s experimental farm. Antonio Cerveró, the company’s technical manager, explained that on the farm the trials for its products are carried out on all types of crops: vegetables, citrus fruits, tropical and stone fruits, vines, potatoes and leafy crops, amongst others. It is also a training centre for workers from the company.

I Jornadas de la patata

‘El futuro de la patata en España’ fue el tema central de este evento organizado por Patatas Meléndez y la robotización de las instalaciones, y especialmente por la profesionalización del sector a través de la “formalización de contratos con los agricultores que garantice que todos reciben un precio justo por su trabajo”.

Meléndez puso en valor el Plan Agrario de su empresa para trabajar de la mano de los agricultores y mejorar su presencia en el mercado y explicó que el Plan de Futuro de la compañía pasa por “seguir creciendo para mantenerse como la empresa líder en el sector de la patata en España”, con una cuota de mercado del 18%, 170 millones de kilogramos comercializados en 2018 y 250 trabajadores, así como dar continuidad a la estrategia de modernización para ser también referencia en Europa.

Patatas Meléndez abogan por la profesionalización y tecnificación del sector

a I Jornada sobre el Futuro de la Patata en España reunió a casi dos centenares de profesionales en las instalaciones de Patatas Meléndez en Medina del Campo (Castilla y León).

El acto contó con dos conferencias individuales a cargo de José Manuel Peláez, Presidente del Comité de Empresa de Europatat y de Javier Boceta, Director General de Meijer España. Peláez auguró un “futuro prometedor” al sector de la patata tras el crecimiento de la producción en España en los últimos años; mientras que Boceta puso en valor la apuesta de empresas como Meléndez “por adelantarse y contar con Patata Nueva Española en el mes de mayo”.

Castilla y León, así como con los representantes de los operadores de patata. Durante la misma, todos ellos reconocieron la necesidad de aportar estabilidad de precios al sector, así como de apostar por la interprofesional de la patata para ganar peso negociador.

1st Potato Seminar ‘The future of the potato in Spain’ was the central topic of this event organised by Patatas Meléndez The 1st Seminar on the Future of the Potato in Spain brought together almost two hundred professionals at the installations of Patatas Meléndez in Medina del Campo (Castilla y León).

The event included two individual talks given by José Manuel Peláez, Chairman of the Europatat Work Council and Javier Boceta, CEO of Meijer España. Peláez forecasted a “promising future” for the potato sector following the growth of production in Spain in recent years, while Boceta emphasised the commitment by companies like Meléndez “to moving forward and having Spanish New Potatoes in the month of May.”

The panel discussion “Potato prices for farmers and the chain of value” involved the chairmen of the four Professional Agricultural Organisations of Castilla y León, as well as representatives of the potato operators. During this discussion, they all acknowledged the need to bring price stability to the sector, as well as backing the inter-professional nature of the potato to gain weight in negotiations.

Lastly, Javier Meléndez, CEO of Patatas Meléndez, closed the Seminar by emphasising the work

CoolRail, las frutas y verduras viajan a Europa en tren El pasado mes de mayo nació la primera conexión

ferroviaria para el transporte de frutas y hortalizas del sur al norte de Europa Un tren con vagones refrigerados transportará productos frescos tres veces por semana de Valencia a Rotterdam

S

e trata de un tren refrigerado que transporta frutas y hortalizas frescas tres veces por semana desde Valencia a Rotterdam. El proyecto es una iniciativa de Euro Pool System, proveedor de servicios logísticos y embalajes reutilizables para la distribución agroalimentaria, en colaboración con el operador ferroviario Shuttelwise. También han colaborado en su puesta en marcha distintos retailers y compañías del ámbito de la logística de fruta y hortalizas.

A la presentación que se hizo en Valencia de CoolRail, asistieron productores y comercializadores del sector de frutas y hortalizas, centrales de compra y operadores logísticos, así como directivos de RENFE, ADIF, FERRMED y Corredor Mediterráneo.

El director de Euro Pool System para el Sur de Europa, Bartolomé Saro, destacó que “este proyecto se enmarca en un cambio de tendencia global en la movilidad. Se trata de buscar formas de transporte más sostenibles que, en este caso, ayuden a impulsar las exportaciones de España hacia el norte de Europa de forma más eficiente y, al mismo tiempo, respetuosa con el medioambiente”.

En efecto, la principal ventaja de este tren, que hace el recorrido Valencia-Rotterdam en 48 horas, lo mismo que en camión, es su menor impacto medioambiental. Así, CoolRail supondrá reducir al año 12.096 transportes en tráiler y un ahorro de 22 millones de kilómetros. Esto implica recortar en 15.000 toneladas las emisiones anuales de CO2, o lo que es lo mismo, entre un 70% y un 90% respecto al tránsito por carretera.

CoolRail inició sus operaciones el pasado 6 de mayo con su primer viaje entre Silla (Valencia) y Rotterdam. Cada tren cargará 42 contenedores, ida y vuelta, 3 veces por semana y durante 48 semanas al año. La temperatura de cada contenedor refrigerado se regula en función del producto concreto que transporta. En el viaje de ida, de Valencia a Rotterdam, el tren va cargado con productos frescos; en el de vuelta, se retornan, plegados, los envases reutilizables que se usan para la distribución de este tipo de alimentos, con el fin de hacer más eficiente el transporte.

Esta primera conexión Valencia-Rotterdam aspira a ser tan solo el principio de una red más extensa. En el futuro se pretende seguir implantando conexiones ferroviarias CoolRail a otros destinos prioritarios para las exportaciones españolas, como Alemania, Reino Unido y Escandinavia.

En 2018, según datos de FEPEX, la exportación española de frutas y hortalizas frescas alcanzó los 12.832 millones de euros. La exportación a la Unión Europea representó el 94% del total, con Alemania, Francia y Reino Unido, en ese orden, como principales destinos. Por Comunidades Autónomas, Andalucía y la Comunidad Valenciana son las principales exportadoras de frutas y hortalizas.

The train in question has reefer wagons for transporting fresh fruit and vegetables three times a week from Valencia to Rotterdam. The project is an initiative by Euro Pool System, a supplier of logistics services and reusable packaging for agrifood distribution, working alongside the railway operator, Shuttelwise.

Different retailers and companies for the fruit and vegetable logistics area have also collaborated in the commissioning of this project.

Producers and marketers from the fruit and vegetable sector, purchasing centres and logistics operators all attended the presentation of CoolRail in Valencia, along with executives from RENFE, ADIF, FERRMED and Corredor Mediterráneo. The manager of Euro Pool System for Southern Europe, Bartolomé Saro, emphasised that “this project is framed within a global change in mobility trends. The idea is to look for more sustainable transport methods which, in this case, help to promote Spanish exports to northern Europe in a more efficient way and at the same time, that are environmentally-friendly.”

In fact, the main advantage of this train, which makes the journey from Valencia to Rotterdam in 48 hours, the same time it takes for a lorry to travel the distance, is its reduced environmental impact.

Therefore, CoolRail will mean a reduction of 12,096 trailer transports per year and a saving of 22 million kilometres. This means cutting back 15,000 tonnes of annual CO2 emissions or, in other words, between 16:0970% and 90% with respect to road transport.

CoolRail started operating on the 6th of May with its first journey between Silla (Valencia) and Rotterdam. Each train will be loaded with 42 containers, there and back, 3 times a week, for 48 weeks a year. The temperature of each reefer container is regulated in terms of the specific produce it transports. On the outward journey, from Valencia to Rotterdam, the train is loaded with fresh produce; on the return journey, the reusable packaging used for the distribution of this type of food is returned, folded up, in order to make the transport more efficient.

In 2018, according to data from FEPEX, Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports reached 12,832 million euros. La conocida ballena azul sigue siendo el corazón de la marca La base del éxito Implantada históricamente en el suroeste francés, Blue Whale nació de la voluntad de varias cooperativas procedentes de la economía social y solidaria, de unirse para ser más fuertes. de la empresa, Christophe Belloc, como su director, Alain Vialaret, recordaron los inicios de esta aventura colectiva y también aprovecharon para presentar los proyectos de los próximos 10 años: duplicar la actividad de la empresa.

“El éxito de Blue Whale se basa, ante todo, en la valorización del trabajo de los fruticultores. Son ellos la base de nuestra empresa. En 50 años, hemos conocido varias crisis que hemos superado gracias a unos presidentes fuertes, unos productores unidos y una innovación constante” explica Vialaret. Esta innovación ha tenido lugar tanto en los campos como en las centrales de selección y envasado y en la creación de nuevas variedades. El objetivo siempre ha sido adaptarse sin cesar a la demanda del consumidor para que éste obtenga placer al degustar una manzana.

has always been to continually adapt to the consumers’ demands to ensure that they find pleasure when eating an apple.

Future commitments Bio, zero pesticide waste, biodiversity protection… Blue Whale is committed to this with fruit produced using the highest standards of responsibility, and it has new ambitions for the future, putting its customers at the centre of its strategy. In this way, with the confidence of its 50 years’ experience, the company aims to double its activity over the next few years.

l año pasado Mercabarna registró un récord de comercialización en el Mercado Central de Frutas y Hortalizas: 1.176.292 toneladas, un 2,3% más que en 2017.

Asimismo, las empresas de la Zona de Actividades Complementarias (ZAC) que comercializan frutas y hortalizas registraron un volumen de ventas que ascendió a las 740.567 toneladas, lo que supone también un crecimiento, del 2,9% respecto a 2017.

Por tanto, el sector de frutas y hortalizas de Mercabarna comercializó en 2018: 2.016.295 toneladas.

En lo que llevamos de año el sector hortofrutícola de Mercabarna sigue creciendo.

Hasta el 30 de junio se habían comercializado tan solo en el Mercado Central de Frutas y Hortalizas 607.900.145 toneladas, un 1,07% más que en 2018.

La parte menos benévola la representan los precios medios ya que bajaron un 1,9%, situándose en 0,89 euros el kilo.

Los productos nacionales representan el 72,6% del total comercializado, un 1,5% más que en el ejercicio anterior. El 27,4% restante es de importación.

Mercabarna Frutas Las frutas experimentaron un crecimiento del 2,4% en el volumen comercializado y del 3,8% en la cotización media. En valores absolutos, ello se traduce en la venta de 537.291 toneladas de frutas a un precio medio de 1,17 €/kg.

Hortalizas El peso de las hortalizas continúa creciendo en el global del mercado, ya que se han comercializado un 4,2% más que en 2017. En total, se han vendido 623.847 toneladas a 0,60 €/kg, el mismo importe medio registrado en el ejercicio anterior. Destaca especialmente

el aumento de las ventas del pepino (+9,4%), la berenjena (+7,5%) y la judía perona (+32,5%).

Exportaciones El mercado mayorista sigue manteniendo en la exportación una de sus grandes bazas comerciales porque aglutina producto de los cinco continentes, lo que facilita de manera extraordinaria una oferta global que muchos mayoristas y minoristas europeos saben aprovechar debido a la buena logística existentes desde este punto geográfico. La exportación en Mercabarna se sitúa en un 35% del total comercializado.

¿Cómo ha evolucionado Cultivar en los últimos 5 años?

Cultivar apostó hace unos años por la importación, maduración y comercialización de bananas y plátanos y estamos satisfechos con la evolución.

Esta es una categoría muy importante para nuestros clientes y consideramos que es importante poder ofrecer una buena calidad y servicio en bananas y plátanos, que complementan al resto de nuestra oferta.

La compañía mantiene una elevada especialización en aguacate

Seguimos invirtiendo para mantener al día nuestros puestos de venta, tanto en Barcelona como en el resto de delegaciones.

Por otra parte, en Mercabarna invertimos en unas nuevas instalaciones dedicadas exclusivamente a la maduración, selección y envasado de mango y aguacate Exótica Premium. En este almacén disponemos de cámaras de maduración con la última tecnología y maquinaria de selección de producto que nos garantiza fruta sin desórdenes internos, en el justo punto de madurez. ¿Me puede indicar el volumen de importaciones de 2018 frente a 2017? En Mercabarna parece que las importaciones se recuperan de manera continuada.

En 2018 incrementamos nuestras importaciones un 30% respecto al 2017 y, en principio, en 2019 el crecimiento sigue el mismo camino. ¿Qué puede decirme respecto a la importación de bananas y plátanos? ¿Cómo está funcionando esta categoría?

El aguacate es un producto que despunta en el sector. ¿Cuál es la evolución de Cultivar? ¿Cómo funciona la marca Exótica?

El aguacate se ha convertido en los últimos años en unos de nuestros principales productos. Nos hemos convertido en especialistas en aguacate. Los Importamos de todo el mundo y trabajamos también con producto nacional. Hace un par de años inauguramos nuevas instalaciones dedicadas al aguacate, donde maduramos, seleccionamos y envasamos.

Estamos muy satisfechos con la evolución de la marca Exótica. Con ella trabajamos sólo producto de la mejor calidad, seleccionado por nosotros. Debe ser un producto con la mejor apariencia y sabor, que satisfaga al consumidor más exigente.

We continue to invest in order to keep our points of sale up to date, both in Barcelona and in the other branches. Furthermore, at Mercabarna we have invested in some new facilities that are exclusively devoted to the ripening, selection and packaging of Exotica Premium mangos and avocados. Our ripening rooms in this warehouse use the latest technology and product selection machinery to guarantee fruit without any internal problems, at the perfect point of ripeness.

Can you tell me the import volumes for 2018 compared to 2017? Imports seem to be undergoing a constant recovery at Mercabarna.

In 2018, we increased our imports by 30% compared to 2017 and, in principle, in 2019 the growth should follow the same line.

What can you tell me about the importing of bananas and plantains? How is this category working?

A few years ago, Cultivar opted for the importing, ripening and marketing of bananas and plantains and we are satisfied with the evolution. This is a very important category for our customers and we consider that it is important to be able to offer good quality and service in bananas and plantains, which complement the rest of our offer.

Avocados are products that stand out from the sector. What evolution is Cultivar seeing?

How is the Exótica brand working?

In recent years, avocados have become one of our main products. We have become specialists in avocados. We import them from all over the world and we also work with national produce. A few years ago, we opened some new installations devoted to avocadoes, where we ripen, select and package them.

Además, CCPAE (Consejo Catalán de la Producción Agraria Ecológica), cuya función es auditar y certificar los productos agroalimentarios ecológicos que se comercializan en Cataluña, que deben llevar la etiqueta que facilita esta entidad, ocupará una oficina en Biomarket de Mercabarna.

Antecedentes

A

finales de 2018, Mercabarna colocó la primera piedra del futuro Biomarket. Esta nueva infraestructura, que terminará de construirse en febrero de 2020, nace para dar respuesta a la creciente demanda de este tipo de productos. Así lo constatan los datos del Ómnibus Municipal 2018: el 91,5% de la población barcelonesa tiene en cuenta la proximidad del producto, un 55,5% que sea de venta directa del campo y un 54,2% que sea ecológico. Las previsiones indican que el nuevo mercado distribuirá el 20% del total de frutas y hortalizas ecológicas comercializadas en Cataluña en 2021 (23.662 toneladas).

Un porcentaje que subiría hasta el 50% en 2031 (78.100 toneladas). Aunque se comercializarán principalmente productos hortofrutícolas, también se prevén puntos de venta de otros productos ecológicos, como la carne.

Hasta el 20 de septiembre se puede optar a un puesto de venta mayorista, porque ya se ha abierto el periodo de licitación.

Las características del proyecto

El Biomarket ocupará una superficie de 8.900 m². En su interior habrá un pasillo central con puestos de empresas mayoristas y cooperativas agrícolas a ambos lados, por el que circularán los compradores, así como un espacio de venta para pequeños productores de proximidad.

En el exterior, cada lateral dispondrá de muelles y zona de carga y descarga. Con la edificación del nuevo mercado, que costará 4.977.000 euros, se agrupará la oferta de productos ecológicos en un solo espacio. Esta aglutinación favorecerá la venta de dichos alimentos, porque será mucho más fácil encontrarlos en el recinto alimentario de Mercabarna que actualmente. En este mercado mayorista hay unas 40 empresas que comercializan alimentos frescos ecológicos de forma consolidada. La mayor parte son del sector de frutas y hortalizas, pero también las hay del sector cárnico y algunas que venden producto seco.

La semilla del mercado bio se plantó entre 2015 y 2016, cuando el Observatorio de Tendencias de Mercabarna identificó la necesidad de mejora del sector especializado en ecológico. Los estudios determinaron que los consumidores están cada vez más informados sobre el valor añadido de estos productos y es una sección al alza, tanto en el sector agrícola como en el de distribución. No obstante, se hizo hincapié en la necesidad de ofrecer un sistema logístico más eficiente y de facilitar la disponibilidad de los alimentos bio en los centros de compra habituales. El Biomarket tiene como objetivo facilitar la distribución entre el comercio minorista y el sector HORECA. El futuro mercado de productos ecológicos entronca con el Pacto de Políticas Alimentarias de Milán, promovido por la FAO (Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura), del que Barcelona es una de las 100 ciudades firmantes. A raíz de este acuerdo, del que se desprende una estrategia que apuesta por los alimentos de proximidad y por una producción sostenible como la ecológica, se creó una red de municipios en favor de la alimentación saludable y el consumo responsable.

This centralisation will encourage the sale of these foods, because it will be much easier to find them in Mercabarna’s new food hall than it is at present. There are 40 companies that market fresh ecological produce in a consolidated manner in this wholesale market. Most of them are from the fruit and vegetable sector, but there are also companies from the meat sector and some that sell dried produce.

The seed of the bio market was planted between 2015 and 2016, when Mercabarna’s Trend Observatory identified the need to improve the sector specialising in ecological produce. The studies determined that consumers are becoming increasingly well-informed about the added value of this produce, and it is a category that is on the rise, both in the agricultural and in the distribution sectors. However, emphasis was made on the need to offer a more efficient logistics system and provide the availability of bio foods in regular buying centres. The BioMarket is aimed at making the distribution between retailers and the HORECA sector easier.

Finally, the construction of specific facilities will help with health/hygiene controls, along with those of labelling and traceability. Additionally, CCPAE (Consejo Catalán de la Producción Agraria Ecológica/Catalan Council for Ecological Agricultural Production), which audits and certifies the ecological agrifood products that are marketed in Catalonia, where companies must carry this organisation’s label, will have an office in Mercabarna’s Biomarket.

The future market of ecological produce ties up with the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, promoted by the FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation), of which Barcelona is one of the 100 signatory cities. As a result of this agreement, from which a strategy that endorses local food and a sustainable production such as ecological farming may be deduced, a network of districts in favour of healthy diet and responsible consumption was created.

ace ya cinco años que la firma dio un vuelco a la empresa y acometió una remodelación absoluta de su almacén situado en una de las zonas de mayor actividad hortofrutícola, la ZAC. Aquella obra sirvió para remodelar 12 modernas cámaras de maduración, que trabajan a diferentes temperaturas según las necesidades de maduración del plátano o la banana, con una capacidad de 7.000.000 de kilos anuales.

También sirvió para lograr una original y colorida panelación del edificio, respetando los colores que tienen los plátanos durante su proceso de desverdizado.

“Ahora nos toca ponernos al día con las oficinas y aprovechar mejor el espacio porque el tema administrativo es realmente muy absorbente y necesitamos mayor comodidad,” señala José María Ruiz.

En un sector que vive los cambios con mucha celeridad, la firma catalana, Plátanos Ruiz, sigue manteniendo su esencia, es decir su absoluta y única especialización a un solo producto, el plátano de Canarias y la banana.

El plátano es un producto que se vende durante todo el año, y de hecho es la fruta que alcanza mayor volumen de ventas en el mercado, pero tiene en el verano su época más débil.

Sin embargo, por sus características nutricionales desde la firma nos dan una serie de consejos para mantenerlos en las mejores condiciones de textura y sabor: primero no dejarlos expuestos nunca a una fuente de calor durante el proceso de descarga, segundo, evitar los golpes y dejar caer las cajas en el suelo porque pueden oscurecerse las zonas de fricción y tercer paso, la temperatura de conservación para que el plátano siga su proceso de maduración es entre 10 y 20 grados. Respecto al melón Piel de Sapo, la firma es una “adicta” al origen de la subasta murciana Subasur, con la insignia ‘Mi Viejo’. “El posicionamiento de esta marca tiene mucho prestigio y esto ha supuesto que las ventas de esta campaña sean casi un 40% más elevadas que en la anterior.”

Innovation Innovation continues to be the driver for growth: the company has launched 25 new references onto the market. Amongst the most recent of these, the launch of the agricultural assorted materials holding ecological certificates under the brand name BIO Sun&Vegs, the micro-dishes with fresh vegetables for cooking, or the Poke, in the ready-to-eat area, along with oats, as a vegetable alternative to yoghurt, all stand out.

This assortment has allowed the company to consolidate its position on the Portuguese market and it now is present in 80% of the Portuguese chains. In Spain, Sun&Vegs reached the supermarket shelves in 2018 and its products are on sale in most of the supermarket chains in our country.

With regard to child nutrition, it has extended its range and references and for the first time has reached the Asian continent: the Philippines and China, alongside Shanghai’s giant DingDong Trading Co., LTD, as well as reaching Saudi Arabia.

Without leaving anything out, the Food Service cannel has had one of the most important launches and it is present in Spain and Portugal: over the last year the brand put out, alongside the company Delikia, a pilot project in the vending channel that already has around twenty corners.

Con la puesta en marcha de este centro de innovación equipado con la última tecnología, Florette continúa siendo una referencia en innovación en nuevas materias primas que en el futuro puedan formar parte de la dieta de los españoles, tal como ha ocurrido, por ejemplo, con el lanzamiento de la acedera o el canónigo rojo.

¿Para cuándo se dará de forma masiva el salto hacia las frutas preparadas? ¿Por qué cuesta tanto en el mercado español?

Es una realidad que todavía nuestro país no se sitúa en niveles de consumo europeos en cuanto a fruta preparada. España además “suspende” en el consumo de frutas, verduras y hortalizas, ya que tan solo el 11% (5 al Día) de la población adulta consume las cinco raciones recomendadas. A brand new centre for raw materials was opened just a year ago. What has this meant in terms of efficiency and volumes?

With the commissioning of this innovation centre, fitted with state-of-the-art technology, Florette continues to be a reference in innovation for new raw materials that in the future could form part of the Spanish diet, as has happened, for example, with the launching of sorrel or red lamb’s lettuce.

All this technological innovation that we have applied allows us to carry out an exhaustive monitoring of the development of each vegetable, respecting its natural growth rate and, at the same time, saving and optimising natural resources such as water.

What is Florette’s forecast for the evolution of the pre-prepared and convenience food range for the immediate future on the Spanish market?

There is no question that consumers’ shopping

baskets will continue to incorporate pre-prepared and convenience food products, and we can see this reflected in the growth data for the category.

We are living at a time where it is precisely time that we don’t have, but we don’t want to give up a healthy diet. Therefore, at Florette we have evolved from salads with the simplest mixtures to the wide range of raw materials and formats available today, such as the First Sprouts, Complete Salads or recipes for microwave cooking.

In general figures, what has Florette’s evolution been over the past 3 years?

In the case of Florette, the trend has been very positive, growing even above the market with an evolution of 31.5% (Nielsen) since 2016.

What are the company’s most immediate challenges, for example, the issue of plastic?

When will the giant leap towards prepared fruit be taken? Why is this such a difficult task on the Spanish market?

In the first place, it is paramount for us to continue innovating and to continue leading and boosting the pre-prepared and convenience food sector.

It is a reality that our country has not yet reached European consumption levels regarding prepared fruit. Spain also “fails” in consumption of fruit and vegetables, since only 11% (5 al Día) of the adult population eats the recommended five portions.

Therefore, at Florette, we are opting for this segment to promote shopping spaces for this type of healthy options for snacking between meals (for example, in supermarkets or vending machines).

Por ello, en las fechas que visitamos sus instalaciones, la sandía termorretractilada era el producto estrella en su sala blanca. Este proceso permite a la sandía tener una doble piel con garantía sobre su cierre.

“No entendemos como todavía se pueden vender mitades de producto en unas condiciones de higiene que no son las óptimas ni por el cuchillo ni por el espacio donde se corta. El sistema de termorrectractilado y nuestras instalaciones aseguran la calidad sanitaria del producto al 100%,” asegura Palacios.

Desde la propia dirección se promueve una evolución constante en todos los productos con el objetivo de anticiparse a las necesidades de los consumidores y de los grandes retailers. “La IV gama es un segmento de mercado que llega con retraso a España y le está costando consolidarse con grandes crecimientos.

Puede que no sea la fruta que yo coma, pero estoy seguro de qué será lo habitual entre mis hijos porque todos buscamos comer sano de una manera más rápida,” resume Christian Palacios, director de marketing de la firma.

The management promotes constant evolution in all the products, aimed at anticipating consumers’ and large retailers’ needs. “Pre-prepared and convenience food is a market segment that reached Spain late and is finding it difficult to become consolidated with important growth. It might not be the way I eat fruit, but I am sure that it will be normal for my kids, because we are all looking for ways to eat healthily and faster,” summarises Christian Palacios, the company’s marketing manager.

The company’s main line of work involves its background as a specialist in melons and watermelons. For this reason, on the dates we visited its installations, the heat shrink-wrapped watermelon was the star product in its clean room. This process allows watermelons to have a double skin with a sealed guarantee.

“We don’t understand how product halves can still be sold in hygiene conditions that are not optimum, as regards the knife used and the area where they are cut. The heat shrink-wrapped system and our installations

ensure the health quality of the produce 100%,” Palacios guarantees.

The heat shrink-wrapped formats can used for halves or quarters for watermelons and melons.

Pumpkins have now been added to this, sliced in controlled atmosphere in tubs of different formats.

What exactly is the concept ‘Express SlowFood’?

It is a nod to the ‘Slowfood’ movement, but adapting their philosophy to an ‘Express’ lifestyle. The concept responds to today’s lifestyle, bringing together healthy eating, handmade preparation based on fruit and/or vegetables and the ‘ready to eat’ concept’.

This year’s latest development has been Kombucha, a probiotic drink of fermented tea.

The range has several product lines: soups and creams made from pumpkins, lentils and vegetables, ecological vegetable stews with ‘super foods’ or microalgae, such as the pumpkin and chia seed creams or vegetable cream with spirulina; vegetable spreads such as sweet and spicy guacamoles, avocado hummus or sweet potato sobrassada, which are new developments; vegetable aperitifs, such as carrot or courgette sticks with yogurt sauce; fruit salads, baked apple desserts or dried fruit.

La firma mantiene en todos los campos una importante estrategia de crecimiento

La facturación del Grupo ha crecido especialmente en España

Inversión en Cerdeña

El grupo ha invertido 3,5 millones de euros en una nueva empresa en Cerdeña compuesta por dos actividades de producción agrícola y una planta de alta innovación tecnológica, mediante la participada Antiga Sardigna S.A. Srl.

El crecimiento se debe también a las ventas registradas en los mercados extranjeros, muy especialmente en España, mediante las dos participadas Vegetales Línea Verde Navarra S.A. y Productos Naturales De La Vega S.L. El grupo ha conseguido una facturación superior a los 85 millones de euros.

En lo que respecta a la zona este de Europa, en el polo agro-productivo de Serbia, en fase de desarrollo, la compañía ha concentrado sus recursos en ultimar las inversiones estructurales.

“Si bien las cifras fomentan nuestra estrategia de consolidación y expansión, no nos basamos exclusivamente en ellas.

Nuestras inversiones no son de carácter meramente estructural, sino que también están dirigidas al crecimiento de nuestro capital humano, mediante la creación de empleo, la formación y la especialización. El incremento de la fuerza laboral en 2018, contando solamente la sede de Manerbio, ha sido de un +14% – comenta Domenico Battagliola, CEO de La Linea Verde – “No olvidamos que somos agricultores y trabajamos mediante una cadena de producción corta y transparente”.

En Italia, en total, ascienden a unas 2.000 hectáreas las áreas de cultivo caracterizadas y formadas por el mismo sistema de cadena corta, controlada y certificada, que confluye bajo una única organización de productores, “Sole e Rugiada”: “Gracias a esta organización, la sede de Manerbio cuenta con su propio abastecimiento de ensaladas. El requisito previo para nuestro crecimiento es el aplicar cambios, pero sin dejar de mirar hacia la tierra, con la cabeza y con el corazón”, finaliza Battagliola.

28% growth for La Línea Verde Group La Línea Verde Group closed its consolidated balance sheet at the end of December 2018, with a sales volume of around 300 million euros and a growth of 28% compared to the previous year.

With this data, the company confirms the positive trend that has made it the undisputable leader of the pre-prepared and convenience food and fresh readyto-eat dishes sector in recent years.

La Linea Verde Soc. Agr. S.p.A.’s head offices in Manerbio are also taking part in the entire group’s growth, increasing its own invoicing by over 20.5 million euros, recording a rise of over 13% (174.9 million in 2018, compared to 154.4 million in 2017).

The logistics and transport company B&B Enterprise Srl has also increased its sales volume, reaching 24 million euros. The company Natura is following the same line, closing its 2018 balance sheet with an invoicing of over 13 million euros.

Investment in Sardinia

Greater production capacity and energy savings

The group has invested 3.5 million euros in a new company in Sardinia, made up of two agricultural production activities and a state-of-the-art technological innovation plant, by way of the invested company, Antiga Sardigna S.A. Srl.

In the first place, investments have been made in structural elements and they are linked to improvements in efficiency in the production area, both in terms of an increase in the production capacity and in energy savings, with a threeyear 15 million euro project that will be completed at the end of 2019.

This growth is also due to the sales recorded on foreign markets, particularly in Spain, through the two invested companies Vegetales Línea Verde Navarra S.A. and Productos Naturales De La Vega S.L., with which the group has obtained an invoicing of over 85 million euros.

At the same time, agricultural investments coincide with this upscaling of production, with fields and greenhouses dedicated to salad crops, using both ecological and integrated farming methods.

With respect to Eastern Europe, in the Serbian agro-productive arena, which is in a development phase, the company has concentrated its resources on finalising its structural investments.

Digitalisation: 4.0

“Although the figures promote our consolidation and expansion strategy, our company is not exclusively based on them. Our investments are not only structural; rather, they are aimed at the growth of our human capital by way of job creation, training and specialisation. The increase in the workforce in 2018, just taking into account the Manerbio centre, for example, was +14%,” says Domenico Battagliola, CEO of La Linea Verde. “We cannot forget that we are farmers and we are working with a short, transparent production chain.”

The company will boast a new JD Edwards computing management system, the primary role of which is to implement a control system that perfectly coordinates each area of the company, becoming fully operational in 2019.

Specifically, their production processes will be digitalised following the “Industry 4.0” principles. This will translate into an EBIT for La Linea Verde Soc. Agr. S.p.A. of over 4.1 million euros and a net income of over 2.2 million.

The Italian invested companies are also following the positive trend set by La Linea Verde Soc. Agr. S.p.A. Amongst these, the subsidiary Ortomad Srl, which manages the production centre in Pontecagnano Faiano (Salerno), stands out, with an invoicing of over 33 million euros and an 8% growth compared to the previous year.

En cuanto a frescos, Unica sigue desarrollando gamas de snacks en tomate, pimiento y pepino apostando por el sabor, y trabajando en modos de presentación atractivos y de fácil uso. Para ello “mantenemos una estrecha relación con las casas de semillas con el objetivo de desarrollar en exclusiva o en formato de clubs nuevos conceptos”.

A finales del año pasado abrieron una nueva línea de snack saludables con la marca BuenOh!, y recientemente han sumado una referencia, el mango, a las ya existentes: manzana, piña y pimiento Sweet Palermo. “Hasta ahora esta variedad (de mango) se estaba mostrando a nuestros clientes, pero ya se comercializa a través de la web de Amazon España, en máquinas de vending y tiendas gourmets.

Siempre estamos buscando nuevas variedades para ampliar la gama”, ha explicado el subdirector de Unica, Diego Calderón.

La gama de snacks deshidratados BuenOh! es 100% natural y se caracteriza por su textura extra-crujiente (menos del 2% de humedad), gracias a un proceso patentado que mantiene el sabor y las propiedades organolépticas sin añadir azúcares, sales, grasas u otros aditivos o conservantes. La empresa pretende posicionarse en el mercado con un producto de referencia, ideal para veganos y apto para celiacos.

Para nosotros se trata de una toma de contacto, actualmente nuestro volumen es pequeño. La clave es vender un producto de calidad y variado, que llegue en un tiempo razonable y a precios competitivos”.

At present, the BuenOh! Project is in an initial phase in Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany. It is presented in 15g bags, equivalent to 150g of fresh product. A convenient format that allows consumers to eat a healthy, fun snack, anytime, anywhere.

Regarding fresh produce, Unica continues to develop snack ranges in tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, opting for flavour and working on attractive, easy-to-use presentation methods.

¿Cómo pensó CITROSOL, reconocido como especialista en tecnologías y postcosecha para los cítricos, adentrarse en la IV gama?

Llevamos tiempo diversificando e intentando solucionar problemáticas de otras frutas y hortalizas frescas. En 2010 profundizamos con los pimientos frescos, con el desarrollo del SISTEMA CITROCIDE® PC P. Posteriormente en 2013, y después de años de I+D+i logramos introducir el SISTEMA CITROCIDE® PLUS T en tomates.

Creemos que los problemas medioambientales y los potenciales de seguridad alimentarias causados por los DBPs (cloratos, cloritos y percloratos) del cloro requerirán soluciones en el futuro. ¿En qué consiste el pro-

AqUAFRESH pretende mejorar la seguridad alimentaria y reducir el consumo de agua en el proceso de lavado de la industria de frutas y hortalizas mínimamente procesadas.

Se trata de un proyecto europeo formado por un consorcio en el que participamos CITROSOL y KRONEN, empresa alemana especializada en maquinaria para el procesado de frutas y hortalizas. Al consorcio CITROSOL-KRONEN hay que sumar la colaboración de CNTA, el Centro Nacional de Tecnología y Seguridad Alimentaria de Navarra.

“Con el SISTEMA CITROCIDE® logramos solucionar los problemas de DBPs asociados al uso del cloro”

Ha sido financiado por Eurostars- Eureka con casi 665.000 euros y tiene una duración de dos años y medio.

Si no me equivoco nos encontramos en la recta final. ¿Es así?

El pasado mes de junio culminó el último de los pilotos a escala industrial con Vegamayor. Ahora estamos estudiando los datos de los diferentes análisis microbiológicos y de DBPs, así como los datos de los sistemas de control del SISTEMA CITROCIDE® FRESH-CUT y las lavadoras de KRONEN para presentar las conclusiones.

A tenor de los resultados preliminares del piloto industrial, hemos observado que el SISTEMA CITROCIDE® FRESH-CUT es capaz de controlar el nivel de carga microbiana reduciendo significativamente el consumo de agua, y por tanto la huella hídrica.

En términos de seguridad alimentaria, ¿significará mayores garantías y eficiencia?

CITROCIDE FRESH-CUT: greater food safety and reduced water footprint CITROSOL’s new system controls the level of the microbial load, reducing water consumption Fruit Today euromagazine talked to Benito Orihuel, CEO of CITROSOL. Why did CITROSOL, which is known as highly specialized on technologies and postharvest for citrus fruits, decide to plunge into the pre-prepared and convenience food range?

We have been diversifying for some time now, trying to resolve problems occurring with other fresh fruit and vegetables. In 2010, we examined fresh peppers in depth, with the development of the CITROCIDE® PC P SYSTEM. Following this, in 2013, after years of R&D+i, we managed to introduce the CITROCIDE® PLUS T SYSTEM in tomatoes.

We believe that the environmental and potential food safety problems caused by the DBPs (chlorates, chlorites and perchlorates) from chlorine will need to be resolved in the future.

What does the aqUAFRESH project consist of? Does it have an international scope? aqUAFRESH is intended to improve food safety and reduce water consumption in the fruits and vegetables fresh-cut industry.

It is a European project formed by a consortium in which CITROSOL and KRONEN, a Germany company specialising in machinery for fruit and vegetable processing, are taking part. The CNTA, the National Centre for Technology and Food Safety of Navarra is also attached to the CITROSOL-KRONEN consortium.

It has been funded by Eurostars-Eureka with almost 665,000 euros and the project will take place over two and a half years.

If I am not mistaken, we are reaching the end now. Am I right?

In June, the last of the industrial scale pilot schemes with Vegamayor came to an end. Now we are studying the data from the different microbiological analyses and the DBPs, as well as the data from the control systems of the CITROCIDE® FRESH-CUT SYSTEM and the KRONEN washing machines in order to be able to present the conclusions.

In view of the preliminary results from the industrial pilot scheme, we have observed that the CITROCIDE® FRESH-CUT SYSTEM can control the level of microbial load, significantly reducing water consumption and therefore, the water footprint.

In food safety terms, will this mean greater guarantees and efficiency?

On the one hand, we have managed to characterise the concentrations of CITROCIDE® PLUS and the water refreshments needed in order to keep a tight rein on the microbial load for different types of leaves and vegetables. And on the other hand, we have developed the automatic measuring, controlling and dosing system (CITROCIDE® FRESH-CUT SYSTEM) to guarantee that these concentrations are always suitable, resulting in robust equipment from the food safety point of view and highly efficient in water and CITROCIDE® PLUS consumption.

But are there any limitations to the CITROCIDE® SYSTEMS? The real limitation of these systems lies in the use of Peroxiacetic Acid (PAA) which, as with any technological coadjutant, requires a certification that guarantees its safety for consumers. Accordingly, CITROSOL has obtained favourable evaluations from the Scientific Committee of AECOSAN (Spanish Agency for Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition), the top authority on the subject and we are working to extend the safe use of our CITROCIDE® to other fruit and vegetables.

l exceso de calor está provocando una menor disponibilidad de materias primas y tensiones en el suministro, según el sector de frutas y hortalizas preparadas o IV Gama integrado en FEPEX. Las olas de calor, unidas a las tormentas intensas, acompañadas de granizo en algunas ocasiones en distintas zonas de producción han provocado daños a las materias primas vegetales, especialmente a hortalizas de hoja: lechugas, brotes tiernos y verduras.

Este efecto ocasiona estrés en la estructura y tejidos de los vegetales. Los impactos que ocasionan son incremento de la fragilidad y aparición de daños fisioló-

gicos, ya que los cultivos se hacen más vulnerables.

Así mismo, la vida útil de los vegetales, tanto materia prima como procesados en cuarta gama, se ve afectada dando lugar a productos con deterioros y una reducción del volumen.

FEPEX considera que España es el proveedor más fiable del mercado europeo incluso en situaciones anormales provocadas por la climatología, pero existe una fuerte preocupación en el sector de IV Gama, puesto que el efecto de las altas temperaturas puede ser inmediato, pero también puede provocar un daño latente que se manifiesta en las semanas posteriores.

Tensions in the supply of material for pre-prepared and convenience food The very high temperatures are causing a lower availability of raw materials and tensions in the supply line, according to the pre-prepared and convenience food fruit and vegetable sector belonging to FEPEX. The heat waves, along with heavy storms, at times accompanied by hail in different production areas, have caused damage to the raw plant materials, particularly leafy vegetables: lettuces, baby leaves and green vegetables.

This is causing stress in the plant structure and tissues. The impacts caused include an increase in the fragility and appearance of physiological damage, as the crops become more vulnerable. Likewise, the shelf life of the vegetables, both as raw materials and as processed elements for pre-prepared and convenience foods is also affected, giving rise to damaged produce and a reduction in volume.

FEPEX considers Spain to be the most reliable supplier to the European market, even in abnormal situations caused by weather conditions, but concern is growing in the pre-prepared and convenience food sector, as although the effect of the high temperatures can be immediate, it can also cause a latent damage that appears over the following weeks.

“Cucumber cycles have changed” Seminis guarantees quality in the double and triple harvests, trends that are on the rise in this segment The down trend in prices has meant that farmers from Almeria have changed their mindset regarding a crop as sensitive as cucumbers. “Double and even triple harvests are being considered, particularly for ecological crops where there is less margin to act against pests,” comments Manuel Martínez, sales manager at Seminis.

In general, two differentiated trends are being followed. The first one involves transplanting at the end of July or the beginning of August; another at the beginning of October and a third one in the spring. “This has been very well received by bio producers.”

The second trend, which is becoming more prevalent amongst producers, is that of supplying for September plantations and harvesting for the second time in the spring, to alternate cucumber with other products such as melon or watermelon.

The varieties from Seminis’ Super Root Non Stop catalogue have a lower water content and, externally, their skin is more ribbed and keeps its colour throughout the cycle better than other materials on the market, Martínez states. The bottleneck on the fruits is also minimised to a large degree.

In order to make it easier for the production to be successful, whatever the date chosen, Seminis offers a catalogue that ensures quality from start to finish, innovating in the much-needed postharvest demanded by the large platforms, a characteristic that is becoming even more important since the start up of the ‘plastic free’ movement.

Un estudio de la UAL demuestra que Levantino tiene una mayor garantía poscosecha que otras variedades

n julio Enza Zaden dio a conocer las últimas tendencias en pepino, sus novedades y presentó los resultados de un estudio sobre vida comercial del profesor de la UAL Manuel Díaz.

El estudio parte de una metodología usada en Medicina y determina que Levantino “tiene una garantía de vida de 11 días sin reclamación frente al testigo (con 8 días), y su probabilidad de comercialización es 3 veces mayor”.

Oktan (ciclo temprano) tiene gran capacidad productiva, frutos muy oscuros y acanalados.

Montano (medio) ofrece un extra de vigor en sus fechas, entrando rápido en producción y generando frutos de calidad sobresaliente y muy homogéneos durante todo el cultivo. Se enmarca en el concepto Greencumbers (con Levantino, Poniente y Braganza), que garantiza un elevado estándar de calidad y poscosecha con frutos comercializables durante más tiempo gracias al color más oscuro de los frutos, rellenado homogéneo, ausencia de cuello de botella y mayor porcentaje de materia seca. Esa mayor vida comercial redunda en una mayor sostenibilidad (menor desperdicio, menor necesidad de embalaje...), y encaja a la perfección con las demandas de cadena y consumidor final.

Oktan tiene “la resistencia más alta del mercado a CGMMV”

“En general la mayor causa de pérdida de valor comercial del pepino es el arrugamiento”, explicó Díaz, aunque no es la única.

“Las reclamaciones de los supermercados vienen por amarilleo, pudrición…”.

En Enza Zaden tienen muy en cuenta la poscosecha a la hora de desarrollar sus variedades. Las más novedosas, Oktan y Montano, tienen un “potencial muy interesante” en este sentido, y además la primera tiene “la resistencia más alta del mercado a CGMMV”, explicó Oscar Herrerías, responsable de pepino. Ambos tienen triple resistencia, fundamental para lograr una buena sanidad vegetal que permita alargar la poscosecha con las máximas garantías.

También oferta variedades de referencia como Levantino, que “evoluciona de forma excepcional en ventas”. Su línea de pepino francés con ejemplos como Audax (la más vendida) o los Easyq’s, donde son líderes en el segmento midi copando el 85% de la cuota. Para productores bío, está la opción de semillas 100% ecológicas con Vitalis, con los mismos niveles de calidad.

Longer life with Enza A study by the UAL shows that Levantino has greater post-harvest guarantee than other varieties In July, Enza Zaden showed the latest trends in cucumber, their new developments and the company presented the results of a study on shelf life by Professor Manuel Díaz, from the UAL. The study is based on a methodology used in Medicine and it determines that Levantino “has a shelf life guarantee of 11 days without any complaints, compared to the control (with 8 days), and its marketing probability is 3 times greater.”

“In general, the most significant reason for the loss of commercial value in cucumbers is wrinkling”, Díaz explains, although it is not the only reason.

At Enza Zaden, the post-harvest is very important when developing their varieties. The most groundbreaking ones, Oktan and Montano, have a “very interesting potential” on this aspect and the former also has “the highest resistance on the market to CGMMV”, explained Oscar Herrerías, manager for cucumbers. Both have triple resistance, which is essential to obtain a good vegetable health that allows the postharvest to be extended with the top guarantees.

Oktan (early cycle) has an important production capacity, a very dark coloured, grooved fruit. Montano (medium) offers extra strength on its dates, coming into production quickly and generating fruit with an excellent quality, which are very homogeneous throughout the entire crop. It is included in the Greencumbers concept (with Levantino, Poniente and Braganza), which guarantees high quality standards and post-harvest with fruit that are marketable for longer thanks to the darker colour of the fruit, the homogeneous filling, the absence of bottleneck and a greater percentage of dry material. This longer shelf life means greater sustainability (less waste, less need for packaging…) and it fits in perfectly with the demands made by the chain and the end consumers.

The company also offers reference varieties such as Levantino, which “has an exceptional sales evolution.” Its line of French cucumber includes examples such as Audax (the top seller) or Easyq’s, where they are leaders in the midi segment, with 85% of the market share. The same quality levels are available in the 100% ecological seeds with Vitalis that are the best option for bio producers.

En la Foto 2 a la derecha vemos una calle con Smart Q con plantas de un color más oscuro y una excelente sanidad, frente a la calle de la Izquierda en la que vemos una variedad testigo, referente en la zona, con un color mucho más claro y hojas afectadas por diferentes virosis.

Además, los agricultores que han probado estas variedades en sus invernaderos están muy satisfechos de los resultados y las ventajas que destacan de la genética SmartQ son: plantas con una resistencia natural más alta a enfermedades, con entrenudos cortos, hojas más pequeñas y oscuras, una orientación de las hojas más horizontal, flores más pequeñas y frutos más cortos y de muy alta calidad.

In order to appreciate these advantages, we should look at the photos: in Photo 1 the Smart Q genetics produces shorter, high quality fruit and a plant with smaller, horizontally-placed leaves, which mean that it is very well ventilated and it is easier for the light to get through. In Photo 2, on the right, we can see a lane planted with Smart Q, darker coloured and with excellent health, compared to the lane on the left where we can see a reference variety in the region used as a control, with a much lighter colour and leaves that are affected by different viruses.

Additionally, the farmers who have tried these varieties in their greenhouses are highly satisfied with the results and the advantages that stand out from the SmartQ genetics are: plants with a higher natural resistance to disease, with short

internodes, smaller, darker leaves that are more horizontally positioned, smaller flowers and shorter, very high quality fruit.

The latest variety incorporated to the SmartQ family by Fitó is Caobado, recommended for transplanting at the beginning of October, giving production from mid-November. Caobado offers greater plant ventilation, which allows more clarity to reach its interior, with greater luminosity on the fruit, along with a healthier plant. The fruit has a length that is adapted to the market demands; it is grooved, shiny, deep green in colour and with small pistil closing.

Additionally, Semillas Fitó already had two Dutch cucumber varieties with SmartQ genetics: Tejo and Mitre. Tejo is focussed on sowing from August to the 15th of September and on spring crops from the 15th of January. On the other hand, Mitre is a variety for sowing from the end of August to the beginning of September and for spring crops from the 15th or 20th of February.

“Larsson RZ ha entrado fuerte” La variedad de brócoli de Rijk Zwaan ha llegado para quedarse, avalada por sus buenos resultados

l lanzamiento de Larsson RZ fue en 2018, y ahora, en la segunda campaña, todo hace pensar que “después de un primer año comercial con buen sabor de boca, indudablemente van a aumentar las ventas de forma exponencial”.

Así lo asegura José Antonio Hernández, Especialista de cultivo de Brásicas de Rijk Zwaan. Y es que los resultados que ofrece esta variedad con doble aptitud están convenciendo a los agricultores de la principal zona productora, Murcia. A destacar, principalmente, la homogeneidad de corte (en solo dos se puede dejar limpia la parcela), “eso marca una diferencia porque otras se hacen en 3 cortes”, y una poscosecha excelente.

Pero no solo eso. Con Larsson RZ aumenta la producción ya que permite poner una planta más por metro cuadrado, es decir, “ofrece un mayor rendimiento” al disminuir “la separación entre plantas”. Las pellas, muy compactas, redondas y con base muy cerrada, favorecen la sanidad vegetal y la vida útil del producto, y hacen de este material la opción ideal para final de otoño, invierno y principio de primavera.

Otro valor añadido de este material es su aguante en campo. “Desde que alcanzan los 400

De forma paralela, la firma dispone de Robredo RZ para recolecciones de primavera.

En este caso, la variedad destaca por su buen color, poscosecha y recolección muy agrupada “incluso a un solo pase”.

Ya de cara al futuro continúan los ensayos de una nueva variedad para recolección de pleno invierno que destacará por su grano fino, color, poscosecha y vigor de planta.

A characteristic that is very important with regard to dates with production peaks when there is a shortage of workers in the fields.

Larsson RZ “has made a big entrance onto the market and it is definitely here to stay.

Everyone has seen its good conditions in the fields (it is not sensitive to diseases), along with its commercial possibilities and its good post-harvest results,” Hernández concludes.

At the same time, the company also has Robredo RZ for spring harvests. In this case, the variety stands out due to its good colour, post-harvest and very grouped harvesting “even in a single pass.”

Looking to the future, they are continuing trials of a new variety for harvesting in mid-winter that will stand out due to its fine grain, colour, post-harvest and the strength of the plant.

Como curiosidad, destaca la buena evolución en ventas de Luteo F1, una sandía dragón-ice box diploide de carne amarilla que “se está vendiendo mucho en Rusia gracias a su excelente sabor, distinto al de la roja”. Recomendada para trasplantes tempranos-medios, se puede usar como polinizador. Los frutos son ovalados y de carne crujiente, con calibre de entre 3-5 kg.

As a curiosity, the good sales evolution of Luteo F1 stands out. El promotor de cucurbitáceas de Sakata, Joaquín Navarro, define San José como una variedad que destaca por una producción concentrada de alta calidad, con frutos homogéneos de 3 kg a 4,5 kg.

Navarro añade, “esta variedad cuenta con una excelente presentación externa, de piel dorada, semi rugosa y con un escriturado longitudinal y uniforme”. En cuanto a la calidad interna, San José mantiene la esencia de las variedades de Sakata con una carne consistente, jugosa y alto nivel de sabor (mayor de 14º Brix). “Además de su calidad interna, destaca por una buena post cosecha en almacén y por tener una planta con mayor resistencia a oídio y a los pulgones” incide Navarro.

Con esta estrategia, pretenden acercarse especialmente a los consumidores Millennials y la Generación Z. Más exigentes que sus predecesores, quieren formatos que eviten el desperdicio y están dispuestos a pagar más por la calidad. En introducción, NUN 68307 MEM F1* con resistencia intermedia a N. Delhi para tardío en Murcia, fundamental dada la alta incidencia de mosca blanca en este segmento. Con gran calidad, nivel de Brix, carne firme pero agradable y calibre marquista, es otra de las novedades más destacables de la firma.

Y para completar el ciclo de Murcia, han desarrollado Salgado F1 (trasplantes medios), muy productiva, con frutos uniformes y atractivos, calibre marquista y excelente poscosecha sin renunciar al sabor.

A destacar también Kinium F1*, que completa la línea Galkia (Kirene F1, Kinder F1, Kinetic F1).

deas eXchange Event es el cuarto evento mundial de un formato con el que la marca de Bayer fomenta el intercambio de conocimientos y tecnología entre los eslabones de la cadena de valor. Charlas de expertos mundiales, demos con colaboradores externos sobre manejo en campo, nuevas tecnologías aplicadas, sensorial test panels… todo esto sucedió el 2 y 3 de julio en su Centro de I+D del Campo de Cartagena.

En el evento se pudo ver in situ, por primera vez, toda su gama de productos de España, Italia, Francia y Marruecos.

El objetivo no era hablar solo de semillas y genética, sino de todo el abanico, para generar un ambiente de co-creación y buscar soluciones para clientes y consumidores.

Global co-creation Seminis has become the epicentre of the melon world with its ‘iX Event’ Ideas eXchange Event is the fourth world event using Bayer’s format to promote the Exchange of knowledge and technology between the links of the chain of value. Talks by world experts, demonstrations with external associates about handling in the fields, new applied technologies, sensorial test panels… all of this took place on the 2nd and 3rd of July at its R&D Centre in the Campo de Cartagena.

At the event, for the first time, the entire range of products from Spain, Italy, France and Morocco could be seen on site.

The aim was not only to talk about seeds and genetics, but also about the entire range, to generate an atmosphere of co-creation and solution-seeking for clients and consumers.

Encarna Aguayo, Doctor from the UPCT, pointed out the need to lean towards an agricultural format in line with the global consumption trends: health and nutrition; convenience or easy food; values and CSR; pleasure and enjoyment in new experiences; food safety. All of which are fundamental drivers when proposing strategies. “Children eat 70% more fruit if we give it to them peeled. Easyfood offer many options to bring fruit closer to consumers: fresh and chopped, in smoothies or in strips like in the USA.” Or sports: “in 2022 sports nutrition will reach 45 billion euros. An excellent opportunity to develop a watermelon and melon marketing strategy.”

At the panel discussion: ‘Retail and marketing trends’, managers from Coop, Total Produce Spain, The Fresh Produce Centre and Morrisons laid down the distribution’s needs and the challenges involved.

Each market is a world in itself, but a large part of the trends are common. In Scandinavia, ecological produce takes up 25-30% of supermarket sales. Sustainability is essential. “In Denmark, we are obsessed with reducing plastic. Whoever discovers an alternative for pre-prepared and convenience foods will make a mint.”

Amongst the activities, the showcooking by the chef Pepe Rodríguez, a judge on Masterchef stood out, where the staunch supporter of the “traditional piel de sapo”, prepared dishes with Seminis’ melon and watermelon to show their versatility.

Nueva generación de sapo Syngenta presenta un mini redondo y la primera sandía negra seedless con marca Zeraim

l piel de sapo es un “referente estratégico” para Syngenta, que ahora se renueva con una generación con la que pretenden dar al consumidor una textura más crujiente sin perder de vista el sabor, distinto al de Sancho o Jimenado, pero con un alto estándar fruto de una genética de décadas, cuenta Víctor García, Product Manager de Cucurbitáceas.

Originalidad también en la innovación de formas y calibres con MP 6130, un sapo redondo que inaugura la línea de melones de calibre personal (1-1,2 KG) con carne firme y buen nivel de azúcar, resistencias a oídio, pulgón, fusarium y cribado. Con esta propuesta, “el nicho del nicho”, pretenden crear una nueva categoría con la forma redonda del Galia y las características internas del sapo, en un intento de impulsar el mini sapo en los mercados internacionales. Y es que, a pesar de los intentos de las casas de semillas, el ovalado no ha tenido los resultados esperados y crece lento.

Master es la nueva referencia en especialidades de sandía

Los Demo Days sirvieron para presentar algunas de esas novedades, como MP 5837 (trasplantes de mayo), que combina una alta firmeza de carne y un gran nivel de azúcar.

Para completar a Airen y Macabeo lanzan MP6405 y MP6391, con alto contenido en azúcar, carne firme y escriturado atractivo.

El Charentais se amplía con Salomón (extratemprano), que complementa a Tazha y Arpón y tiene resistencias a oídio y pulgón.

De la I+D en Amarillo se encarga Zeraim con los nuevos Party (temprano y medio en Murcia) y Maillot (tardío).

En sandía, Bahama (aire libre) inaugura la nueva gama de negra seedless de Zeraim, a la que se sumarán 3 más en 2020.

El resto de tipologías de sandía se engloba en Syngenta. En blanca, han completado el rango de tamaños incrementando el estándar de sabor. Para exportación hay nuevas como WDL7113, midi Sugar Baby triploide de excelente calidad interna.

En especialidades, Master es la nueva referencia, con un original patrón de piel y color verde oliva muy llamativo que contrasta con la carne rojo intenso, seguida de Yellow Bite, con el calibre de Bibo y Petite pero con carne amarilla, muy demandada en el mercado inglés.

New generation of piel de sapo melons Syngenta is presenting a mini round melon and the first black seedless watermelon under the brand name Zeraim Piel de sapo is a “strategic reference” for Syngenta, which it is now renewing with a generation that it intends to use to give consumers a crunchier texture without losing the flavour, differing from Sancho or Jimenado, but with a high standard, the result of decades of genetic work, comments Victor Garcia, Cucurbits Product Manager.

The Demo Days were used to present some of these new developments, such as MP 5837 (May transplanting), which combines significant firmness of the flesh and a high sugar level.

Originality also appears in the innovation of shapes and sizes with MP 6130, a round piel de sapo that is being launched as the individual-sized line of melons (1-1.2 KG) with firm flesh and a good sugar level, resistance to powdery mildew, aphids, fusarium and MNSV. With this proposal, “the niche

within the niche,” they are intending to create a new category using the round shape of the Galia and the internal characteristics of the piel de sapo, in an attempt to promote the mini piel de sapo on the international markets. And the fact is that in spite of the attempts by the seed companies, the oval-shaped fruit has not obtained the expected results and is only growing slowly.

To round off Airen and Macabeo, they are launching MP6405 and MP6391, with a high sugar content, firm flesh and attractive grooving.

The Charentais range is extended with Salomón (extra early), which complements Tazha and Arpón and is resistant to powdery mildew and aphids.

Syngenta encompasses the remaining watermelon types. In white watermelons, they have completed the size ranges, increasing the flavour standard.

For exports, they have new materials such as WDL7113, a midi Sugar Baby triploid with excellent internal quality.

In specialities, Master is the new reference, with an original skin pattern and very eye-catching olive green colour that contrasts with the deep red flesh, followed by Yellow bite, with the size of Bibo and Petite, but with yellow flesh, which is in great demand on the English market.

En Galia, como en sapo, buscan la misma apariencia de fruto y juegan con las diferentes zonas para obtener calibres homogéneos de 1kg. Su nueva introducción es Abisal, para tardío en Murcia y La Mancha, y tienen en desarrollo otra para temprano en Murcia con resistencia a pulgón.

En su Melon House Fair 2019 la casa de semillas mostró sus novedades en las diferentes tipologías. El piel de sapo ha tenido un “crecimiento exponencial” en ventas para la firma este año. En líneas generales apuestan por carnes con textura más crujiente y buscan homogeneidad en las variedades para que sean a nivel externo.

La resistencia a oídio y pulgón ya está en toda su gama (a excepción de Osorio). En la demo se pudieron ver materiales como Alcarez y Olmos, y el mini para exportación que será comercial en 2020.

Entre los Cantaloup destaca Enzor, súper dulce y con una carne roja muy atractiva. Sirve para invernadero en Almería y temprano en Murcia, y mantiene muy buen calibre. Cuenta con resistencia a pulgón. Sucredor es su nuevo tardío con consistencia para La Mancha y Brix, además de ausencia de vitrescencia.

El año pasado lanzaron la línea de Amarillo y siguen ampliándola. Su primera variedad E25M00 702 ya tiene nombre: Ambarino. Para medio/tardío en Murcia y Castilla-La Mancha, tiene un sabor excelente y cuenta con resistencia a oídio y pulgón. La novedad es una variedad que completa ciclo en temprano.

El Charentais Makeba, el concepto Chaloupe y un nuevo melón amarillo con carne naranja fueron otras de las propuestas presentes, sin olvidar la sandía, destacando su primera negra sin semillas unipersonal, con carne rojo intenso y sabor intenso.

Buena parte de estas variedades se pueden encontrar en semilla 100% eco con Vitalis.

It has consistency and is ideal for planting in La Mancha and has high Brix levels, in addition to an absence of watercore.

The Charentais Makeba, the Chaloupe concept and a new yellow melon with orange flesh were the company’s other proposals, without forgetting watermelons, with the company’s first individual seedless black watermelon, with deep red flesh and an intense flavour, standing out.

A large part of these varieties can be found in 100% eco seed with Vitalis.

Semillas Fitó mostró sus soluciones para completar el ciclo de producción en todos los segmentos de melón

a casa de semillas organizó un año más sus Jornadas de Melón y Sandía en Lobosillo (Murcia) para mostrar en campo tanto sus variedades comerciales como las que van a introducirse en las próximas campañas. Este año se han centrado en resaltar el principal objetivo de todo su equipo de I+D: completar con variedades de primer nivel los diferentes segmentos de melón para que cubrir todo el ciclo productivo en la región de Murcia.

El ejemplo más claro es el segmento de piel de sapo. En temprano cuenta con Paredes, para siembras durante el mes de marzo. Es un melón con muy alta producción y que presenta una planta vigorosa y sana, con frutos del tamaño que pide la distribución, un escriturado atractivo y carne firme y jugosa.

Paredes abre el ciclo en Murcia y Manchego lo cierra en CastillaLa Mancha Para siembras medias, a lo largo del mes de abril, Fitó ha introducido esta campaña Ceferino, que incorpora un completo paquete de resistencias contra oídio y pulgón; destaca por su alta producción y gran sabor. Ceferino presenta una planta vigorosa y equilibrada con gran facilidad de cuaje y frutos de forma ovalada, un escriturado longitudinal, muy buen marcado de cama y excelente sabor con grados Brix. Para siembras medias la compañía cuenta con Kanela, que da calibre y muy buen sabor.

Otra novedad es Arroyo, indicado para siembras tardías, con sabor tradicional y un completo paquete de resistencias contra oídio y pulgón. Arroyo presenta una planta de vigor medio alto, con facilidad para cuaje agrupado y un fruto de calibre medio perfecto para encajar, con un atractivo escriturado longitudinal, carne azucarada y con excelente sabor, así como una buena post cosecha.

En las Jornadas se destacó el calendario de cosecha de todas estas variedades: se empezaría en Murcia con Paredes durante todo el mes de junio y primera semana 66 Fruittoday

de julio, al que seguiría Kanela, desde los últimos días de junio hasta 25 de julio. Después está Ceferino durante todo el mes de julio; mientras que Arroyo llega aproxima-

damente hasta el 10 de agosto. A partir de aquí da comienzo la temporada en Castilla-La Mancha, con su variedad Manchego como líder indiscutible en el segmento.

This is a high production melon that has a strong, healthy plant, with fruits of the size demanded by the distribution, attractive grooving and firm, juicy flesh.

For medium sowing, throughout the month of April, Fitó has introduced Ceferino this campaign, which incorporates a complete package of resistances against powdery mildew and aphids. It stands out due to its high production and its great flavour. Ceferino has a strong, balanced plant, which sets easily and produces oval-shaped fruits, with lengthwise grooving, very well marked bedding and excellent flavour with high Brix degrees. For medium cycle sowing, the company has Kanela, which gives size and very good flavour.

Another new development is Arroyo, indicated for late sowing, with a traditional flavour and a complete package of resistances against powdery mildew and aphids. Arroyo presents a medium high strong plant, which sets easily in groups and medium-sized fruit perfect for boxing, with an attractive lengthwise grooving, sweet flesh with excellent flavour, as well as a good post harvest.

At the Seminars, the harvest calendar for all these varieties was emphasised: Paredes would start in Murcia throughout the entire month of June and the first week of July, followed by Kanela, from the last days of June to the 25th of July. After this, Ceferino would be available for the entire month of July; while Arroyo would continue approximately until the 10th of August. From this point on, the season would start in CastillaLa Mancha with the Manchego variety as the indisputable leader in the segment.

Nuevo sapo, amarillo y charentais HM.CLAUSE presenta cuatro nuevas referencias en su oferta de melón

En calibre grande, Valkiria está cosechando resultados “increíbles” en producciones tempranas de Murcia, como ya le han trasladado a HM.CLAUSE los productores que han apostado por la nueva variedad.

Entre sus principales valores están, a nivel externo, una forma y escriturado muy bonitos, y un calibre de entre 3-3,5 kg muy versátil (válido tanto para cadenas como marquistas). La variedad permite hacer calibre y calidad en temprano y además es muy resistente a nivel agronómico ya que incluye resistencia a oídio y gen Vat para pulgón.

En Amarillo lo nuevo es Jandaia, para ciclo medio-tardío en Murcia y La Mancha. Con un calibre para exportación que oscila entre los 1,3-1,8 kg, destaca por su vigor de planta, buena calidad interna y la forma apiñonada y bastante lisa de los frutos. A ello se añade una fácil identificación del punto de corte.

Actualmente en fase precomercial, Chamán (HMC 45 3967) es un charentais con “mucho potencial”. Ofrece sabor y calibre en ciclo temprano (trasplantes del 5 al 30 de marzo), y cuenta con unos óptimos niveles de producción y buena conservación.

Su corte es sencillo de realizar y la carne presenta un atractivo color naranja.

Valkiria cosecha resultados “increíbles” en temprano en Murcia Melon & Watermelon

In large size, Valkiria is obtaining “incredible” results in early productions in Murcia. The producers have already informed HM.CLAUSE of this, backing the new variety. Amongst its main values are the following: externally, a very attractive shape and grooving, and a very versatile size of between 3-3.5kg, (valid for both chains and brands). The variety allows size and quality to be obtained in early cycle and it is also very resistant, agronomically speaking, since it includes resistance to powdery mildew and gen Vat for aphids.

In Yellow melons, the new development is Jandaia, for medium-late cycle in Murcia and La Mancha.

With an export size that ranges between 1.3 and 1.8kg, the vitality of its plant, its good internal quality and pine cone-shaped, smooth fruit stand out. Added to this, its cutting time is easy to identify.

Currently in a pre-commercial phase, Chamán (HMC 45 3967) is a charentais melon with “great potential”. It offers flavour and size in early cycle (transplanting from the 5th to the 30th of March) and it has some optimum production levels and good shelf life. It is easy to cut and the flesh is an attractive orange colour.

Lo último que han presentado es el concepto Ready to eat, con el que ofrece una gama completa de Cantaloup LSL con “dos puntos de corte diferenciales”: cuando aparece un anillo de microcracking junto al pedúnculo, y cuando la piel vira de verde a crema. Otro valor añadido es la resistencia a pulgón y oídio, incluida la raza 3.5 en toda la línea (excepto Casasol RZ), que la convierten en “única en el mercado”.

En Galia convencional el ‘vida extendendida’ para ciclo medio-tardío en Murcia y La Mancha Venus RZ completa la gama, y en LSL tienen Salmeron RZ (Murcia) y Alcazaba (Almería y Portugal).

El sapo se diversifica en calibres y colores.

En sapo tradicionales, a la evolución ascendente de Flechaverde RZ en La Mancha se une la experimentada en Brasil, donde copa el 30% del mercado como referente de marquistas. Y cabe destacar las ventas de Mesura RZ en Almería, donde se ha puesto en marcha un proyecto muy interesante con Unica Group, que “ha empezado a producir la variedad con Melón de Autor”.

En Amarillo 34-191 RZ y 34-192 RZ reemplazan a Ducral RZ y Yeral RZ.

Y en sandías lanzan la línea “Tropical” de redondas seedless con colores “sorprendentes” en piel y carne, como una de piel amarilla con carne roja que sigue la línea iniciada por Tropical sunshine RZ (piel negra y carne amarilla).

También se han podido ver las novedades en mini microsemillas 62-430 RZ (Crimson) y 62-356 RZ (Tigre) que reducen el número y tamaño de las microsemillas, incluidas en el concepto Sandissima.

This is the reason behind the name, ‘The Total Solution’ of its Global Melon & Watermelon Event. The latest development they have presented is the Ready to eat concept, with which they are offering a complete range of Cantaloupe LSL with “two differentiated cutting points”: when a ring of micro cracking appears alongside the stem and when the skin turns from green to cream.

Another added value is the resistance to aphids and powdery mildew, including the 3.5 strain throughout the line (except for Casasol RZ), which has made them “unique on the market”.

Another new concept is Galanas for Morocco, launched with Zerhoun RZ. “It has the genetics of the Galia and the size of an ananas. It weights 4 kg and it does not split,” Diego Maestre, Melon and Watermelon coordinator informs.

In conventional Galia, the ‘extended life’ for medium-late cycle in Murcia and La Mancha Venus RZ completes the range and in LSL, they have Salmeron RZ (Murcia) and Alcazaba (Almeria and Portugal).

In Yellow melons, 34-191 RZ and 34-192 RZ are replacing Ducral RZ and Yeral RZ. And the ‘Tropical’ line of round, seedless watermelons with “surprising” colours in skin and flesh is being launched, with examples such as one with yellow skin and red flesh that follows the line initiated by Tropical Sunshine RZ (black skin and yellow flesh).

ntes de que a principios de agosto se hagan oficiales las previsiones europeas 2019-2020 de manzana y pera, diversas fuentes consultadas por esta publicación han expresado su preocupación por el escaso margen que le queda al productor y por la falta de condiciones de reciprocidad para la entrada en el mercado europeo cuando se trata de países terceros.

Un caso que preocupa especialmente, y no es nuevo (su origen estuvo en el veto ruso en 2014), es la cifra de producción que Polonia pondrá en los mercados, aun cuando, antes de conocer las cifras de Prognosfruit, se sabe que su volumen será inferior al del año pasado. Pero el gigante polaco, tras el varapalo inicial de su principal comprador, Rusia, ha tenido tiempo de aprender, renovar sus variedades, posicionarse por precio y tecnificarse. Y en ello continúa.

Los productores se quedan sin margen

Los datos a los que hemos tenido acceso indican que en los años venideros podrían llegar a desaparecer 1/3 de los productores de fruta de pepita, y esto afectaría muy especialmente a aquellos que produzcan de media entre 35 y 45 toneladas por hectárea.

Tan solo teniendo en cuenta los costes laborales que existen en otros países del entorno europeo o no europeo y que introducen fruta dentro del espacio comunitario, las diferencias son abismales: en Polonia el salario agrario es de 2,5€ por hora, en Turquía, que ya nos afecta con sus exportaciones de limones y tomates y lleva camino de alcanzar un importante nivel productivo de manzanas, el coste salarial es de 1 euro la hora. Sudáfrica, que mantiene el mismo coste laboral (otro euro por hora) está en el punto de mira de todo el sector citrícola español y ahora también en el de pepita. Las exportaciones

sudafricanas se dirigen especialmente hacia Europa en los meses de mayo a agosto y llegaron a alcanzar las 90.000 tn en manzanas y casi la misma cantidad en peras. Y nuestros vecinos ribereños del Mediterráneo, como Túnez o Argelia se llevan la palma con un coste laboral que no alcanza ni el euro; en concreto el estudio habla de 0,75 euros por hora. El país del dimitido Buteflika, llegó a consumir más de 10.000 toneladas de manzanas españolas, y debido a sus vaivenes políticos cerró sus puertas a las importaciones en febrero de 2018. En estos momentos, no sólo ha dejado de ser un comprador, sino que puede convertirse en un nuevo competidor en la compleja red import-export del propio continente africano, y por extensión, de manera global.

A estos costes laborales, en Europa se suman otros inputs como un reglamento más o menos generalizado de 40 horas semanales y unos derechos laborales dignos, la exigencia de numerosas certificaciones, un sinfín de controles sanitarios que no se demandan a otros orígenes y un regla-

Francia es un ejemplo de ello desde hace décadas. Ha dejado de ser el productor de fruta de hueso que era, pero cuando su producción entra en el lineal, la distribución no vende otro producto que no sea francés. Inglaterra también exhibe con orgullo su producción de fresas en verano con la bandera de la corona británica, Dinamarca igualmente, etc. Y en España tenemos algunos buenos ejemplos de cómo valorizar el producto local (ver Editorial en página 5) y contribuir a un mundo más sostenible.

Pip fruit, in the line of fire

The tight profit margin left to producers and the mass entrance of apples from other sources are causing the sector important reasons for concern.

Before the European 2019-2020 apple and pear forecasts become official at the beginning of August, different sources consulted by this magazine have shown their concern about the narrow margin left to producers and the lack of reciprocity when it comes to third countries entering the European market.

A case that is particularly disturbing, and that is not new (it started with the Russian veto in 2014), is the production figure that Poland will put on the markets. This is the case, although, even before the figures from Prognosfruit are official, we already know that the volume will be lower than last year.

However,after the initial setback regarding its main buyer, Russia, the Polish giant has had time to learn, to renew its varieties, to position itself by price and to update all its technical skills. And it is still at it.

Producers have no profit marginleft The data we have had access to indicate that, in the years to come, up toone third of pip fruit producers could disappear.This would have a particularly significant effect on farmers who produce an average of between 35 and 45 tonnes per hectare.

Just taking into account the labour expenses in other countries in Europe and outside its borders which introduce fruit to the EU, the differences are abysmal: in Poland agricultural wages are 2.5€ per hour; Turkey, which is already affecting us with its lemon and tomato exports and is on the way to reaching an important production level in apples,pays its workers 1 euro per hour. Africa pays the same to its workforce (one euro per hour), and this sector is already in the sights of the entire Spanish citrus growing sector, and they have now added pip fruit to their production.

South African exports to Europe become especially significant from May to August, reaching a figure of 90,000 tonnes in apples and almost the same amount in pears. And our neighbours along the Mediterranean coast,such as Tunisia orAlgeria take the prize with labour expenses that do not even reach one euro; specifically, the study talks about 0.75 euro per hour. The country of the recently-resignedpresident Bouteflika, reached consumption figures of over 10,000 tonnes of Spanish apples, but owing to political vagaries, it closed its doors to imports in February, 2018. At present, it has not only stopped buying, but it could also become a new competitor on the complicated import-export network of the African continent and consequently, globally.

In Europe, other inputs are added to these labour expenses, such as a more or less generalised regulation of 40 working hours a week and decent labour rights, the requirement of numerous certifications, an endless amount of sanitary controls that are not requested of other sources and an increasingly strict regulation on the subject of plant protection products.

Could the distribution itself help to tackle the problem or to lead this agreement for local produce?

Spanish and European distribution in general are

intensifying their battle for prices on a daily basis, albeit not all of it, because there arealready chains that have realised that consumers are changing and are becoming conscious buyers, for whom paying a few cents more is not a big deal, and these consumers prefer local produce, or as local as possible.

This new profile must be taken into consideration because it will mean a new niche for growth.

These consumers have been brought upto value commitment and the social environment. And they may be able to save, with a mere few cents, their region’s agricultural industry.

“The producers’ profit margins are becoming increasingly tight and we know this now, at the beginning of the campaign. We must find an effective solution to avoid the indebtedness and disappearance of the producers, as well as a drop in the national GDP,” explain the sources consulted.

France has been an example of this for decades.

It is no longer the stone fruit producer that it once was, but when its production comes onto the supermarket shelves, the distribution sells no produce that is not French. England also proudly displays its strawberry production in the summer, emblazoned with the Union Jack flag; Denmark does the same, and so do others. And in Spain we have some good examples of how to enhance local produce (please refer to article on page 5) and to contribute to a more sustainable world.

La situación de la fruta de hueso se estabiliza

Tras un comienzo de campaña con algunos problemas por falta de calibre, la situación de la fruta de hueso cambia hacia signos más positivos y mejores calibres

l exceso de calibres pequeños generó hasta bien entrada la campaña problemas de comercialización, que pasadas las semanas se han subsanando con la entrada en producción de variedades mejor aceptadas en los mercados por su mayor tamaño.

A pesar de ello, a finales del mes de julio, el ritmo de comercialización ralentizado de los destinos exteriores ha ido cogiendo fuerza y los mercados se encuentran en una situación de fluidez.

“Los árboles fueron bien aclarados pero la fruta maduraba y no había otra opción que cosecharla”

Diversas fuentes explicaron que “se ha tratado de una coyuntura que no era evitable ya que los árboles habían sido bien aclarados y la fruta, a pesar de que maduraba, no alcanzaba el tamaño deseado y debíamos cogerla” En este sentido, cabe decir que las labores de aclarado han requerido del orden de un 30% más de horas de trabajo de los temporeros. Este incremento, junto a los salarios más los repuntes en otros inputs, como la energía y los fertilizantes, ha hecho que algunas variedades cuya producción costaba entre 35 y 40 céntimos por kilo, haya pasado a representar una subida de entre 5 y 10 céntimos para el agricultor, que por una causa u otra ya lleva sufriendo vicisitudes de todo tipo durante demasiadas campañas seguidas.

En las diversas reuniones que han tenido lugar con el Ministerio de Agricultura y los diversos agentes sociales se ha puesto sobre la mesa la necesidad de avanzar en la estructura de la producción y su organización, con el fin de responder a los retos que se plantean en las campañas futuras. En particular dar respuesta a la demanda de los mercados (tanto internos como de exportación) con las variedades y las calidades que los consumidores demandan.

La situación, por tanto, está normalizada, sin problemas de abastecimiento en los lineales y con un buen solapamiento de variedades que facilitan la fluidez del mercado.

The excess of small fruit generated marketing problems until well into the campaign, which has now been rectified by the coming into production of varieties that have a better acceptance on the markets due to their larger size.

Different sources explained “that it was due to a situation that could not be avoided, as the trees had been correctly thinned and the fruit, in spite of the fact that it was ripening, did not reach the desired size and we had to pick it.”

On this point, it is worth mentioning that the thinning needed around 30% more work hours by the seasonal workers.

This increase, along with the wages plus increases in other inputs, such as energy and fertilizers, have meant that production costs in some varieties, which were between 35 and 40 cents per kilo, have now risen between 5 and 10 cents for the farmers, who, for one reason or another, have been suffering from all kinds of upheavals for far too many campaigns running.

In spite of this, at the end of July, the slower marketing rate of foreign destinations started picking up and markets are now flowing smoothly.

At the different meetings held with the Ministry of Agriculture and the different social agents, the need to move forward in the production structure and its organisation to respond to the challenges set forth in future campaigns was put on the table. In particular, the need to respond to the demand of the markets (both home and abroad) with the varieties and qualities that consumers request was debated.

Therefore, the situation has now returned to normal, without any supply problems on the supermarket shelves and with a good overlapping of varieties that make the market flow more smoothly.

a firma francesa AGRO SELECTIONS FRUITS (Genética MAILLARD) se dedica desde hace años a la creación de variedades frutales de melocotones y nectarinas de frutos redondos y planos, albaricoques, cerezas y manzanas. Su objetivo siempre ha sido crear gamas varietales de sabor específico e identificable con el fin de ofrecer a los consumidores un producto de calidad durante toda la temporada.

Specifically, the REGAL’IN EUROPE company, which edits MAILLARD genetics globally, at present is marketing 12 varieties that cover the complete mid-season calendar, all of them with the organoleptic pattern of “Maison Maillard”: semi-sweet flavour, complete closing and colouring, aroma and crunchiness.

Now, four well-known Spanish companies from the sector are joining this project, respecting the previously signed agreements, to optimise Spanish production: AlbiceFruits, Cinca Group and Frutaria for conventional production and Haciendas Bio exclusively for ecological production.

The plantation target for 2024 is 750 hectares in conventional and 150 in ecological. At the moment, a commitment has already been made to the plantation of 600 hectares, and the rest, until the target is reached, will be placed at the disposal of the farmers in a call for applications.

Flat white nectarines are the response to new consumption trends, since they are products that are healthy, very tasty, practical and ideal for eating outside.

n invernadero, la desinfección es un método eficaz para eliminar patógenos del suelo, pero tiene un inconveniente: tras la desinfección, el suelo es un medio inerte.

Se habrán eliminado los microorganismos nocivos, pero también aquellos que no lo son y desarrollan una función beneficiosa.

Para comenzar el nuevo ciclo de cultivo con un suelo sano y raíces fuertes, Koppert recomienda aplicar Trianum inmediatamente después de la desinfección. Y es que cuando el suelo ha perdido toda su vida microbiológica se corre el grave peligro de que sean los organismos patógenos los primeros en volver a colonizarlo.

To start up the new crop cycle with healthy soil and strong roots, Koppert recommends applying Trianum immediately after disinfection. And the fact is that when the soil has lost all its microbiological life, there is a serious risk for the pathogen organisms to be the first in colonising it again.

Trianum has been shown to be highly effective, since it contains an exclusive strain of the beneficial fungus Trichoderma harzianum that is quick to develop in all types of soil and in a wide range of temperatures. It grows between 8º and 34º C, with pH levels between 4 and 8.5.

The strain, which is only produced and marketed by Koppert, is one of the few that is authorised for use in ecological farming because it is 100% natural, it does not leave any residue on the fruit or the leaves, it is compatible with most fungicides, fertilizers and insecticides/acaricides, and it has no safety period or MRL. The biological fungicide has a double function: it protects the plant and prevents soil diseases produced by pathogens such

as Fusarium, Sclerotinia, Rhizoctonia and Phytium. And it feeds the plant as it helps to improve nutrient metabosalisation.

Trianum is available in two formulas.

Trianum-P (in powder format) is applied in the last irrigation phase with an approximate dose of 1 kg/Ha. Trianum-G (in pellet format), is particularly indicated for mixing with substrates and applying directly on each row of plants with a dose of 30 to 50 g for every 1,000 plants.

It competes for space, as it quickly forms a physical barrier along the surface of the roots, preventing pathogens from becoming established.

It competes for nutrients and does not leave any food resources for the pathogens. It develops microparasitism, as the Trichoderma strain grows around the pathogens and produces enzymes that break down their cell walls, disabling them and eliminating them. Lastly, it promotes a healthier root system, with more root hairs, improving water and nutrient absorption. The result is a stronger and more uniform crop, particularly when the plants are grown in adverse conditions.

ste año el campo almeriense ha tenido muchos problemas con la Tuta absoluta, y el pulgón y la araña roja se han convertido en plagas importantes, sin olvidar el incremento en la incidencia de virosis como Spotted (TSWV) en pimiento y tomate y nuevas plagas emergentes como Nezara viridula, Creontiades pallidus… que aparecen en diferentes localizaciones y con mayor incidencia.

Entre los motivos está la resistencia que han generado dichas plagas a los químicos autorizados, a lo que se añade el cambio en el comportamiento de los insectos por su mejor desarrollo en las nuevas condiciones ambientales por el cambio climático, y otros factores como el manejo inadecuado en las dosis necesarias de fauna auxiliar. Fruit Today habló con Bioline Iberia, la nueva biofábrica fruto de la unión de Bioline Agrosciences y Biocolor, para ahondar en las herramientas disponibles para combatirlas. La empresa desarrolla estrategias dinámicas y flexibles de control biológico, que están en continua evolución, para adaptarlas a la problemática cambiante de cada cultivo.

En Bioline Agrosciences son líderes mundiales en producción de Trichogramma, y en particular T. achaeae,

que es una novedosa herramienta para control biológico de Tuta. López recomienda una combinación de N. tenuis desde semillero y el uso de T. achaeae en momentos de entrada de plaga. Este auxiliar es un parasitoide de huevos de Tuta, el único enemigo natural que actúa en ese estadio. Está formulado en tarjetas de suelta controlada y es “el mejor aliado para un control biológico fiable y eficaz”.

Además, al reducir los tratamientos químicos, se favorece la entrada natural del parasitoide de larvas de Tuta, Necremnus tutae, autóctono de la zona. “Estos enemigos naturales, unidos a prácticas culturales como deshojes y otras herramientas como trampas cromotrópicas, feromonas de confusión sexual… hacen posible un programa eficaz para su control”.

Recomendamos plantas reservorio para control de pulgón usando combinaciones de depredadores y parasitoides. La araña roja la combatimos con varios ácaros depredadores. Apostamos también por una mayor diversidad tanto dentro como fuera de los invernaderos ayudándonos de plantas refugio”.

Bioline Iberia cuenta con Bioline Academy, un departamento de formación para instruir y formar a los técnicos de sus distribuidores, los propios técnicos de la empresa y agricultores en las técnicas de control biológico más avanzadas.

This year, the fields of Almeria have had many problems with tomato leafminer, and aphids and red spider mites have become significant pests, without forgetting the increase in the incidence of virus diseases such as Spotted (TSWV) on peppers and tomatoes and new, emerging pests such as Green stinkbug (Nezara viridula), Creontiades pallidus… which appear in different locations and with increasing incidence. Amongst the reasons behind this, is the resistance that these pests have generated to the authorised chemicals, added to which is the change in insect behaviour caused by their improved development in the new environmental conditions owing to climate change, and other factors such as the incorrect handling of the necessary dose of auxiliary fauna. Fruit Today talked to Bioline Iberia, the new fruit bio-factory, arising from the merger of Bioline Agrosciences and Biocolor, to delve deeper into the tools available to tackle them. The company is developing dynamic, flexible strategies in biological control, which are constantly evolving, in order to adapt them to the changing problems of each crop.

Rocío López, Technical Manager for Almeria, Granada and Malaga, explains that the proliferation of Tuta has been observed since the last campaign, “not just in the spring, but also in the autumn and winter.” For this reason, now more than ever, all the tools in our hands must be used, rationally.

“The early detection of the pests, as well as the preventive auxiliary ones, which are released, is the keys to success for an effective control.” At Bioline Agrosciences, they are world leaders in the production of Trichogramma and, in particular, T. achaeae, which is a groundbreaking tool for the

biological control of Tuta. López recommends a combination of N. tenuis from the seedbed and the use of T. achaeae when the pests appear. This auxiliary is a parasite preying on Tuta’s eggs, the only natural enemy that acts on this stage. It is formulated on controlled release cards and it is “the best ally for a reliable and effective biological control.” Additionally, when reducing the chemical treatments, the natural arrival of the parasite that feeds on Tuta larvae is encouraged, Necremnus tutae, natural to the region. “These natural enemies, along with cultural practices such as defoliation and other tools such as chromotropic traps, pheromones for sexual confusion… make an effective programme for their control possible.”

Aphids and red spider mites “are affecting all the crops in the region in a much more aggressive way, but mostly on peppers, cucumbers and aubergines, causing losses in the harvest due to direct damage and/or due to the virus diseases transmitted by the aphids. We recommend reservoir plants to control the aphids, using combinations of predators and parasites.

We deal with red spider mites using several predator mites. We also opt for a greater diversity both inside and outside the greenhouses, using refuge plants.”

Bioline Ibera has Bioline Academy, a training department to instruct and train the technicians from their distributors, the company’s own technicians, along with farmers, in the most advanced biological control techniques.
