Intercitrus sigue trabajando por el “cold treatment”

Tras un primer paso por Bruselas, que reunió a todos los agentes del sector citrícola y el gobierno valenciano, Intercitrus se dispone a consolidar un grupo de presión que trabaje a su favor se comprometieron a dar “visibilidad” al problema en la capital europea y a buscar alianzas políticas entre los Estados miembros del sur, también afectados por estas plagas.

Inmaculada Sanfeliu, presidenta de Intercitrus, insistió en que el riesgo de que estas plagas se instalen “es desmesurado” y que el enfoque de Sudáfrica, elegido para eludir en la UE aplicar el cold treatment, es “inaceptable”. “Una probabilidad alta de no presencia no es una ausencia. O hay presencia de individuos potencialmente transmisores o no la hay, y actualmente la normativa se refiere a ausencia total, no parcial. El tratamiento de frío bien ejecutado no deja lugar a interpretaciones, ni a probabilidades de riesgo: garantiza la ausencia de plaga, y por ello esta medida es innegociable. Los informes EFSA (Autoridad Europea de Seguridad Alimentaria) nos avalan”.

or ello, el pasado 15 de diciembre, la interprofesional se reunió con diversos eurodiputados españoles para crear un ‘lobby’ que fuerce a la Comisión Europea a imponer un cold treatment en tránsito a las importaciones europeas de cítricos.

El objetivo pasa por prevenir la muy probable llegada de ciertas plagas, fundamentalmente de la Thaumatotibia leucotreta. La también llamada ‘Falsa polilla’ es considerada por la UE como una plaga cuarentenaria cuya lucha es “prioritaria” que –junto a otras de igual condición, como la B. dorsalis o B. zonata– representa un grave riesgo fitosanita-

rio, económico y medioambiental para la citricultura europea.

La cifra de interceptaciones de patógenos foráneos en importaciones de países no comunitarios hasta el 6 de diciembre sumaba más de 200, el 58% en cítricos de Sudáfrica y de Zimbabwe.

Los miembros de Intercitrus aclararon que, lejos de lo expuesto por el lobby sudafricano en Bruselas, la aplicación del mencionado tratamiento de frío en tránsito es “perfectamente asumible, es un proceso estandarizado internacionalmente, que Sudáfrica ya aplica en sus exportaciones a otros grandes mercados”. Su coste representaría menos de una tercera parte de los gastos que los exportadores españoles tienen que asumir para cumplir con lo que exigen los protocolos de los países antes citados. “La reciprocidad –para enfermedades como la ‘Mancha Negra’- debe implicar que la UE exija a los países que la sufren protocolos tan severos como los que nos aplican a nosotros para prevenir plagas mucho menos dañinas como la Ceratitis capitata”, insistió Sanfeliu. “La EFSA ya ha acreditado el fracaso del ‘enfoque de sistemas’ que aplica Sudáfrica para sus exportaciones a la UE y ha evidenciado sus debilidades, por lo que no entendemos que la reacción de la Comisión se retrase mucho más: si, como argumenta Sudáfrica, aplicarlo pondría en peligro 140.000 empleos en aquel país, el no hacerlo supondría jugar a la ruleta rusa con nuestras plantaciones, con los 280.000 empleos y 450 empresas que, sólo en España, viven directamente de nuestros cítricos”.

orría el verano de 2016, cuando se hizo público el primer gran movimiento dentro del sector: la firma Martinavarro pasó a formar parte del fondo Miura Private Equity, que sirvió de vehículo para crear Citri&Co, que con posterioridad incorporó en sus filas a Río Tinto, Perales y Ferrer y dos últimos operadores que nada tienen que ver con el mundo citrícola: Frutas Esther y la brasileña Famosa, especializada en melones. Por lo que respecta a las compañías citrícolas que integran Citri&co, su volumen suma 350.000 toneladas en cítricos.

En 2019, un nuevo fondo, Atitlan, dirigido por el yerno de Juan Roig, que ya contaba con experiencia en el mundo del olivar, compró Frutas Romu y un año después Frutas Guillem-Export. El volumen previsto comercialmente rondaba las 100.000 toneladas anuales. Por su parte, MCH, pactó con SanLucar Fruit la compra de la firma castellonense Antonio Llusar, compañía, que, por otra parte, ya mantenía acuerdos muy sólidos con SanLucar desde hacía años.

Otro de los movimientos del sector estuvo protagonizado por GPF junto a Label Invesment, de Alexandre Pierron-Darbonne, ex de Planasa, que compró la compañía murciana Frugarva, uno de los principales productores de limones españoles y proveedor de Mercadona. La firma se integró en The Natural Fruit Company, una plataforma montada hace casi 2 años, cuando el fondo compró la empresa valenciana Fruxeresa y la murciana Frutas Naturales.

El más reciente de los acuerdos firmados, se hizo publico durante los días de la feria de Fruit Attraction 2021, en el que Antonio Llusar y Naranjas Torres, anunciaban la constitución de un nuevo grupo, especializado en producto premium y cuya comercialización rebasaría las 100.000 toneladas al año, con unas previsiones de facturación de entorno a los 130.000 millones de euros.

El sector busca dimensión tanto en la empresa privada como en el mundo cooperativo

Uno de los grandes en el mundo citrícola, la firma valenciana Bollo International Fruits, fue adquirida por 150 millones de euros

El mundo cooperativo había recogido el mismo guante cuatro años antes con la creación de Green Fruits, una cooperativa de segundo grado que amparaba a las cooperativas de menor tamaño como Coopcisa, Coopego y Novacitrus, todas ellas en la Comunidad Valenciana y pertenecientes a Anecoop. Al proyecto se ha unido más recientemente la cooperativa de La Ribera, Copal.

Claves para entender los clubs citrícolas

ste artículo analiza cómo ha acontecido el desarrollo de royalties, el cambio de mentalidad del citricultor, los aforos y los resultados que estos clubs ofrecen, así como una reflexión ética.

Un poco de historia A finales de la primera década del siglo XXI, esta fórmula comenzó a tomar forma dentro del mundo citrícola. Era nueva para la categoría, pero llevaba funcionando muchos años en el mundo de las manzanas.

Desde entonces han sido muchas las variedades con royalty que se han presentado. Algunas aparecieron con esquemas muy concretos de clubs estructurados, otras con detalles más específicos respecto a cómo realizar su entrada en los mercados y otras, simplemente, con una limitación de plantas o hectáreas garantizadas. Dentro de estas variedades había tanto mandarinas como naranjas o limones.

Sin embargo, las variedades consolidadas con el transcurso de los años han sido tres y las tres se corresponden con mandarinas de

segunda temporada: Nadorcott, Tango y Orri.

Es cierto que alguna otra mandarina apunta maneras, pero es pronto para señalar una verdadera consolidación. En naranjas y limones también existen los clubs, pero es prematuro hablar de volúmenes tangibles y variedades que aporten diferenciaciones significativas.

Por este motivo, este artículo analizará solo las tres variedades de mandarinas más consolidadas.

Corría el año 1996, cuando en los círculos citrícolas se empezó a escuchar el nombre Afourer y en 1997, AVASA (Agrupación de Viveristas de Agrios S.A.) dio a conocer la relación de plantones vendidos en la Comunidad Valenciana por los viveros autorizados, concluyendo que eran 1.200 plantas de Afourer, nombre que se le continuó dando a los plantones hasta el año 2002, en el que aparecen en la lista 30.316 plantones de Afourer y 17.990 de Nadorcott. Esta doble denominación se siguió usando hasta 2007, año en el que se interrumpen las ventas de con estas dos denominaciones y no vuelven a aparecer hasta el año 2010.

Nadorcott, Tango y Orri se concentran en la segunda parte de campaña En el momento de este parón, ya se habían plantado 774.820 árboles de Aforurer&Nadorcott, además de una serie de hectáreas injertadas a partir del material plantado.

Mientras tanto se había creado la Asociación de Obtentores Vegetales (ANOVE), con posterioridad el Club de Variedades Protegidas (CVVP), así como diversos procesos de legalización que pasaron por conflictos con los sindicatos y con los agricultores históricos, la mayoría de ellos pequeños y medianos. Fue una etapa de choque de mentalidades, así como el inicio de procesos judiciales con sus correspondientes sentencias posteriores, que en la mayoría de los casos se resolvieron a favor de los propietarios de las variedades.

En esos momentos, las primeras plantaciones de Nadorcott, o Afourer&Nadorcott, como queramos denominarlas, ya estaban en producción. Por otro lado, también

Un pormenorizado análisis de este cuadro indica que los mejores resultados para los productores provienen de las mandarinas con royalties. Claramente, el ‘Modelo Royalty’ y los clubs con sus ‘numerus clausus’, bien por árboles o por hectáreas, así como los sistemas colaterales de financiación, se han afianzado.

El momento actual La gestión de las tres variedades más implantadas hasta la fecha es independiente ya que Nadorcott está gestionada por el CVVP, Tango por Eurosemillas, como licenciatario de las patentes de la Universidad de Riverside (California), y Orri por Orri Running Committee (ORC) por cuenta del Plants Production and Marketing Board(PPMB) de Israel.

Las plantaciones realizadas por esta última ya han superado la cifra de 400.000 Tm, tal y como figura en el cuadro de abajo.

El gráfico demuestra que, considerando el número de hectáreas plantadas entre los tres clubs, la cifra pronto alcanzará las 15.000 y su rendimiento para 2025, según todos los análisis, se calcula en unas 550.000 Tm de cosecha en España, solo con las licencias distribuidas hasta la actualidad. Un panorama en el que no debe olvidarse a la variedad Leanri y otras

Si atendemos a la estructura de la propiedad en estas dos provincias, cabe asegurar que son en su mayoría, pequeños y medianos propietarios, con parcelas ubicadas en las zonas históricas del minifundismo valenciano.

Esta fue el área que provocó la primera reacción frontal contra las legalizaciones de las nuevas variedades, en parte, porque suponía un cambio significativo de mentalidad para el citricultor. Hasta finales del siglo pasado se habían transmitido las nuevas variedades de unos agricultores a otros sin que el concepto de propiedad de la variedad existiera.

El desarrollo de estos clubs significó un cambio absoluto de paradigma y la forma de trabajo costó ser entendida.

También habría que resaltar que, en algunos casos, se alentó plantar las novedades sin explicar bien lo que podría suceder después, aunque del mismo modo, y no de forma generalizada, hubo abuso de picaresca para no cumplir las normas.

Producción en Marruecos y Egipto Para tener una perspectiva más global hay que señalar que hace años que ya se están plantando Nadorcott en Marruecos y Egipto. Tango ha iniciado su andadura también en Egipto y, por tanto, España tendrá que compartir mercados con fruta de estos orígenes.

Por otro lado, también es cierto que desde los meses de febrero a mayo, el mercado demandaba mandarinas mejores que las Ortaniques y, hasta hoy, está dispuesto a pagar por un producto ‘fácil de pelar’.

“La temporada se está haciendo pesada” La campaña andaluza de cítricos, al igual que la valenciana, no pasa por sus mejores momentos. La incertidumbre económica se apodera de la temporada, sobre todo en naranjas

osé Rodríguez, director gerente de SAT Síntesis, explica cómo vive la compañía sevillana esta coyuntura.

Desde su punto de vista, ¿qué factores están influyendo en esta situación de impás o lentitud para la campaña citrícola?

Se da una confluencia de variables: primero, en Andalucía la campaña comenzó con unos veinte días de retraso. A ello se sumó el exceso de producto del hemisferio sur, que llegó con retraso por los problemas portuarios y que confluyó con nuestro inicio.

Y por último hay que añadir que el calibre de nuestras Navelinas es pequeño y mediano y chocó con los restos de mercancía sudafricana que también eran pequeños por ser su final de temporada. Un coctel perfecto para que los precios se derrumbaran.

Las naranjas con buen calibre se defienden un poco mejor, pero, en general es una temporada lenta. No hay fluidez en las salidas de almacén y las promociones planificadas se quedan por debajo de las expectativas. Se llega incluso a anular camiones porque la venta no funciona bien.

Existe mucho mal de fondo y la situación de confinamientos en Europa genera muchas incertidumbres. En mandarinas, debido a la escasez, la situación es más benévola, pero en naranjas vivimos un fuerte parón. ¿Se ven atisbos de que los confinamientos europeos pudieran generar una mayor demanda como ya se dio en la etapa más dura?

No, en absoluto, esta vez la situación no ayuda. La población ha perdido el miedo al virus y no tiene intenciones de consumir más vitamina C.

Las fuerzas están descompensadas, el comercio debería traspasar los incrementos del cartón, del transporte y de la madera.

Este aumento se ha producido tanto en los almacenes como el campo, donde todos los insumos necesarios para la producción han tenido la misma tendencia alcista.

Todo esto metido en la coctelera de una central de manipulación, traslada al campo un precio inferior. Y si además en el campo, los costes son muy superiores, la situación se complica bastante.

¿Cómo se asumen estas dificultades logísticas en una compañía muy orientada a la exportación?

Manteniendo un ritmo menor de salidas y corriendo el riesgo de que el pedido se anule o se retrase. Convivimos con un problema de carácter global, cuya solución no está en nuestras manos y del que no tenemos alternativa. Son algunas de las consecuencias de lo que se produjo en los primeros meses de pandemia en las que el tráfico marítimo diario, todavía no ha conseguido recuperar el equilibrio.

En estos momentos los problemas portuarios se evidencian más en los puertos de Estados Unidos, y parece que, en Asia algo se va avanzando.

Efectivamente, en estos momentos lo peor está en América. Estamos sufriendo no solo retrasos, sino un encarecimiento del flete

nunca antes visto: de los 5.000 euros de flete hemos llegado a los 12.000. Significa además que, el consumidor, si la mercancía, es muy cara, busca otras alternativas. Entramos en una espiral de débil demanda. ¿Qué debe suceder para que la campaña tome buen ritmo?

Para que se enderece el rumbo de la Navelina deberían confluir muchas circunstancias: que el clima en destino lo remedie con la llegada de mucho frío, o la otra alternativa es que aquí, en origen, venga una helada o lluvias importantes y la naranja se deteriore porque ya está madura. Solo en esta triste circunstancia se quitarían kilos del mercado. Limpiamos en origen o se consume más en destino. Es triste pero no hay otra circunstancia.

Y debo señalar, con vistas en la futura campaña, que la fuerte sequía que sufre la cuenca hidrográfica del Guadalquivir podría comprometer la campaña de 2022-23.

En términos más particulares, ¿cuáles son las últimas novedades de su compañía?

Hemos realizado una inversión de más de 2,2 millones de euros en una primera fase de infraestructuras en el área de recepción de campo y manipulación. Además, ahora concentramos toda nuestra actividad en un único almacén.

Frutinter: Clementinas con huella de nitrato cero

La firma de Castellón es la primera compañía mundial que comercializa clementinas certificadas con huella de nitrato cero

L

a sostenibilidad desde todos los ángulos ha sido desde siempre una preocupación para la firma de Vila-Real y, en este sentido, hace varios años que Frutinter empezó a interesarse por un aspecto que no generaba demasiada atención: la Agricultura Smart y la Huella de Nitrato.

Hoy, tras diversas etapas de experimentación, Frutinter es la primera compañía del mundo que comercializa clementinas certificadas con nitrato cero desde una de las fincas de sus asociados.

“La primera vez que percibimos los problemas que ocasionaba el exceso de fertilizantes y cómo éstos influían en la contaminación del medio acuático fue hace unos cuatro años. Desde entonces, empezamos a realizar un planteamiento de cómo sería posible revertir la situación,” explica su director general, Javier Usó.

El profesor Beltrán explica como el tamaño de los frutos está íntimamente ligado a las cantidades de nitrato y potasio que absorbe el árbol. “Trabajamos con una metodología patentada por la Universidad de Barcelona, con la que se analizan una serie de parámetros (microclima, humedad, nitrato de potasio, etc.) para que el árbol mantenga un correcto equilibrio.

A través de un software específico realizamos una analítica de sabia para conocer lo que le ocurre a la planta,” concluye el docente.

“Hemos conseguido unos 8.000 kilos más por hectárea y de mayor calibre”

A través de la Cátedra Frutinter UPV (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia) y de la mano del catedrático Pedro Beltrán, se pusieron en marcha una serie de estudios y experiencias que, finalmente, culminaron el pasado septiembre con la obtención de la certificación ‘Huella de Nitrato Cero’, expedido por la compañía Food Rina Iberia.

Los resultados han sido tan satisfactorios que reduciendo el abonado en un 58% y con

un ligero incremento de potasio, Frutinter ha conseguido, en solo dos cosechas, numerosos avances como la mejora del calibre y una productividad que alcanza 8.000 kilos de clementinas más por hectárea.

La tecnología aplicada, apoyada por sensores remotos de teledetección espacial, consistió en introducir sondas a 3 o 4 metros de profundidad para controlar que la contaminación no llegara al subsuelo. “El resultado fue altamente satisfactorio ya que se consiguió que no hubiera lixiviación al medio acuoso.”

Para la comprobación veraz de los resultados, el proyecto se llevó a cabo dejando unas fincas testigo, que posteriormente permitió hacer comparaciones.

Using the Frutinter UPV Chair (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia) and with the help of Professor Pedro Beltrán, a series of studies and experiments were started up which, finally, ended last September with the ‘Zero Nitrate Certificate’ being issued by the company Food Rina Iberia.

The results were so satisfactory that reducing fertilising by 58% and with a slight increase in potassium, Frutinter has managed, in just two harvests, many advances such as the improvement in size and a productivity that reaches an extra 8,000 kilos of clementines per hectare.

Professor Beltrán explains how the size of the fruit is closely linked to the amounts of nitrate and potassium absorbed by the tree. “We are working with a methodology that has been patented by the University of Barcelona, with which a series of parameters are analysed (microclimate, humidity, potassium nitrate, etc.) to ensure that the tree maintains the correct balance. Using specific software, we carried out an analysis of the sap to find out what was happening to the plant,” concludes the professor.

The technology applied, supported by remote spatial tele-detection sensors, consisted of introducing probes at a depth of 3 or 4 metres to ensure that the contamination did not reach the subsoil. “The result was highly satisfactory as there was no leaching into the water.”

To verify the results correctly, the project was carried out leaving some farms as controls, which subsequently allowed comparisons to be made.

La inflación, la subida de costes y una demanda débil están haciendo que la actual campaña citrícola esté resultando más pesada de lo previsto orígenes y esto es cada día más patente en los mercados europeos, que tradicionalmente eran el baluarte de los cítricos españoles. Estamos asistiendo a una serie de concentraciones por parte de fondos de inversión. ¿Cuál es su parecer al respecto? ¿Puede ser una salida viable para las compañías?

Cierto, que en las últimas semanas ha habido un repunte de precios en alimentación, que por otro lado entra dentro de la normalidad por las compras de Navidad, pero sinceramente no veo por parte de la distribución intención de repercutir esas subidas en los precios de las frutas y hortalizas. La subida de precios se suele repercutir en otros aprovisionamientos y las frutas suelen ser el reclamo.

La campaña está resultando más dura de lo esperado. ¿Cree usted que el sector está en crisis?

El sector citrícola no está en crisis, lo que sí está en crisis es el origen España.

Las firmas citrícolas exportadoras lo hacen bajo los parámetros de la precaución debido a la tensa situación internacional. Este es el caso de la castellonense García Ballester

ruit Today euromagazine habló con Jorge García Monfort, director ejecutivo de la compañía, sobre éste y otros temas. ¿Cómo se manejan los mercados exteriores en una compañía eminentemente exportadora?

“La coyuntura actual puede significar que la fruta de temporada recupere su importancia”

Creo que todas las empresas estamos intentando ser muy precavidos con terceros países. En nuestro caso, Canadá representa el principal mercado y ya manejamos datos en los que, no sólo nosotros, sino todo el sector, está enviando menos volúmenes.

Las cargas están sufriendo retrasos de una semana como mínimo y en ocasiones se acumulan mercancías de varios buques.

Los supermercados están aumentando los precios y existe la incertidumbre de la reacción del consumidor. Esta falta de seguridad pone en entredicho si debemos hacer grandes cargas que, además de haber cuatriplicado su precio, no garantizan una llegada exacta. Hay miedos con los programas porque si nos equivocamos en la previsión o falla la venta en las tiendas, nos puede salpicar a todos. Todo el proceso de venta a terceros países se ha vuelto muy vulnerable, pero un supermercado que se precie no se puede permitir no tener naranjas, aunque las cantidades sean menores.

En Europa, la situación es más estable. Ante todos estos problemas, es mejor vender en nuestro continente.

Y, además, está la vorágine de la subida de precios de la luz, los plásticos y el cartón.

La pelea es muy dura porque además de competir con el producto, nos enfrentamos a unos costes tanto en centrales como en campo que han subido en poco tiempo, como no habíamos visto nunca. Se está tratando de repercutir este incremento, pero es un proceso muy arduo. Y, en nuestro caso particular, nos consideramos casi antes agricultores que operadores comerciales. A través de la SAT Cítrics del Ebre trabajamos con muchos productores, a los que consideramos parte indispensable de la cadena y a los que, también debemos defender.

El baluarte principal de Garcia Ballester es la clementina, ¿cómo se encuentra el mercado en este segmento?

En líneas generales hay menos fruta que el año pasado. Resulta difícil valorar el aforo de un 10% menos, en cualquier caso, esta disminución va por zonas. En el norte de la Comunidad Valenciana y el sur de Cataluña la bajada productiva es más

acusada que en las comarcas más centrales.

La variedad que nos hace mercado es la clemenules y todo indica que la falta de producto continuará durante toda la campaña. Algunos años su maduración se produce toda al mismo tiempo y nos encontramos ante una falsa sensación de abundancia. Este año no se da este caso, por lo que la llegada a los mercados se está produciendo de una manera ordenada y tenemos la oportunidad de defender los precios porque no hay problemas con el calibre ya que al tener menos fruta el árbol, la restante es más grande. ¿Cómo ve el futuro más inmediato para el sector?

Nos enfrentamos a un invierno caliente, cuya evolución final está por ver. En concreto, me refiero a la falta de suministros y a las dificultades logísticas. Creo que las complicaciones de transporte marítimo acabarán afectando al terrestre. Veo una coyuntura internacional muy inestable, con tiempos duros. Mi opinión es que los problemas que nos ha traído la globalización pueden acabar en una tendencia que se caracterizará por consumir producto más cercano.

Nuestra empresa, tutelada ya por cuatro generaciones, ha pasado muchas vicisitudes, incluida una guerra, pero los problemas actuales no tienen precedente y tendremos que afrontarlos sin ninguna experiencia previa.

I think that the marine shipping problems will end up affecting land transport methods. I can see a highly unstable international situation, with some very difficult times ahead. My opinion is that the problems that globalisation has brought could cause a trend that will be characterised by consuming more local produce.

Our company, taught by the knowledge of four generations now, has gone through many ups and downs, including a war, but the current problems have no precedents and we will have to face up to them without any prior experience.

José Antonio Alconchel, CEO del grupo Alcoaxarquia, lleva trabajando en este segmento desde los años ’80, y aunque actualmente la empresa tiene un gran volumen de tropicales, no deja de lado la citricultura, en ambos casos todo ello 100% ecológico. La prueba más clara es la inversión de 500.000€ que han desembolsado para la continua modernización de la planta de manipulación de cítricos de 1.500m2 ubicada junto a la planta de tropicales en Vélez-Málaga. Con la última actuación han tecnificado todo el proceso productivo de la planta, desde la entrada de género, pasando por clasificación y calibrado, hasta la confección en distintos formatos. Esta automatización, con maquinaria de última tecnología que incluye visión artificial y los equipamientos más novedosos en confección y paletizado, permite asegurar la calidad, agilizar los procesos y optimizar la mano de obra. “La planta confecciona 70 toneladas/día con solo 5 personas”, detalla Juan Becerra, director gerente.

En la actualidad el grupo Alcoaxarquía suma en España 450 hectáreas de producción propia en las provincias de Huelva, Sevilla, Córdoba y Cádiz. En Perú cuenta con otras 150 hectáreas, además de una planta de procesados de 2500 m2, compartida para el cultivo de aguacate y sus casi 600 hectáreas.

Antes de entrar en la planta de manipulación, los técnicos del departamento agronómico realizan un control exhaustivo de todos los procesos en campo en cada una de las parcelas de la empresa. “Nuestro gran objetivo es cambiar el concepto ‘producir’ por el de ‘fabricar’ frutas”.

Citrosol lucha contra los Daños por Frío Los recubrimientos CI-CONTROL controlan los manchados en envíos y almacenamientos frigoríficos

E

n los últimos años Citrosol ha desarrollado y puesto a disposición de los operadores varios productos que alargan sustancialmente la vida de los cítricos.

Soluciones que controlan o mitigan diversos desordenes fisiológicos que se manifiestan en forma de manchados y que aparecen en su postcosecha a lo largo de la cadena logística. Entre ellos destacan PLANTSEAL®, recubrimiento vegetal con certificación ecológica y vegana, y CITROPROTECT® que se puede aplicar en el denominado 1er tratamiento.

Ahora Citrosol presenta su nueva herramienta que reduce, y en muchos casos elimina, los manchados por Daño por Frío (DF) que aparecen a lo largo de, y posteriormente al almacenamiento y/o transporte frigorífico.

Los manchados por Daño por Frío son especialmente relevantes en las exportaciones de cítricos entre hemisferios, ya que los frutos son sometidos a temperaturas muy bajas, en muchas ocasiones cuarentenarias (1,1-2,2ºC).

En la Figura 1 puede verse una de las sintomatologías más típicas del manchado por Daño por Frío.

Citrosol ha creado con CI-CONTROL una nueva estrategia para minimizar estos manchados con resultados similares a los obtenidos con la materia activa Tiabendazol (TBZ).

En la actualidad los recubrimientos que han formulado con la funcionalidad CI-Control son: Citrosol Sunseal® UE y Sunseal® Extra UE, Plantseal® y

Plantseal® Shine-free, Citrosol A y AK Camara UE y Citrosol AK UE y AK UE Extra.

Estas ceras ya reducían los manchados en sus formulaciones originales, pero en la nueva formulación CI-Control pueden alcanzar eficacias en la reducción del manchado del 90% o superiores. Este es el caso del recubrimiento vegetal PLANTSEAL® CI-Control. Estas elevadas eficacias hacen innecesaria la adición de Imazalil o Tiabendazol a las ceras con este propósito.

Los recubrimientos CI-CONTROL han sido validados en muchas experiencias de almacenamiento frigorífico prolongado. En la Figura 2 puede verse como Citrosol Sunseal® UE CI-Control controla el manchado tanto con la adición de 5000 ppm TBZ, o la de 2000 ppm de Imazalil, a la formulación original de Citrosol Sunseal® UE. Los recubrimientos CI-CONTROL suponen un gran avance para asegurar la vida comercial de los cítricos en las exportaciones entre hemisferios y en conservaciones frigoríficas. Mitigan, incluso eliminan, los manchados por Daño por Frío.

The Chilling Injury peel damage become especially relevant where citrus exports between Hemispheres are concerned, in which the fruit is subjected to very low temperatures and, in many cases, quarantine temperatures (1.1-2.2ºC). In Figure 1., one of the most typical symptoms of Chilling Injury peel damage can be seen.

With CI-CONTROL, Citrosol have created a new strategy to minimize peel damage caused by CI, offering results similar to those obtained with the active ingredient, Tiabendazole (TBZ).

Currently the coatings that they have improved with CI-Control (CIC) functionality are: Citrosol Sunseal® UE and Sunseal® Extra UE, Plantseal® and Plantseal® Shine-free, Citrosol A and AK Camara UE and Citrosol AK UE and AK UE Extra.

These waxes already substantially reduce peel damage even in their original formulations, but in the new CI-Control formulation they can achieve staining reduction efficacies of 90% or higher as is the case for the plant-based coating, PLANTSEAL® CI-Control. Achieving such high efficacies means the addition of Imazalil or Thiabendazole is now superfluous for this purpose.

CI-CONTROL coatings have been validated in many long-term refrigerated storage experiments. In Figure 2 it can be seen how Citrosol Sunseal® UE CI-Control protects against peel damage as much as the addition of 5000 ppm TBZ to the original formulation of Citrosol Sunseal® UE. or 2000 ppm of Imazalil.

CI-CONTROL coatings are a huge step forward in the fight to protect and prolong the commercial life of citrus fruit exported between hemispheres and that in cold storage.

They mitigate, even eliminate, those tainted by Chilling Injury.

Solo en mandarinas, produce más que el resto de países del hemisferio norte, alcanzando 36.652.000 toneladas. Aun así, el país tiene cabida para las importaciones de Estados Unidos, Egipto, Chile y Sudáfrica y, en menor medida, de otros orígenes. Entre estos, figura la producción española, en la que algunos exportadores están afianzando su propia marca. Sin embargo, la pandemia ha puesto el mundo patas arriba y la tensión que se vive en los puertos y la subida de fletes ha provocado que las exportaciones españolas

descensos significativos. Turquía y Túnez mantienen una bajada del -22%. España y Grecia se mueven entre -8% y -9% respectivamente y EE.UU. desciende un -12%.

Por su parte, los países del hemisferio sur escasamente superan los 3.000.000 de toneladas y Sudáfrica destaca como el gran líder, con casi 2.500.000 t. En tan solo seis años, desde 2015 a 2021, ha incrementado su producción un 16%, pasando de 1.610.113 t a 2.452.491 t. Este aumento continuará durante los próximos años debido a la entrada en producción de nuevas plantaciones.

La firma quiere desarrollar tanto el kiwi verde, como el baby kiwi (Nergi), el amarillo y el rojo. Las plantaciones se realizaron hace 2-3 años, pero los primeros volúmenes se empezarán a cosechar esta campaña.

Primland apoya sus ventas con acciones de comunicación enfocadas a los mayoristas (marketing directo dirigido a las fruterías, campañas de degustación, etc.) y este año han creado una página de Facebook España.

La firma busca alianzas con productores de Italia, Grecia y Africa del Sur

Para acercar las zonas de producción a las de consumo, y participar así de una agricultura más sostenible, la compañía decidió tener plantaciones en Asturias (10 hectáreas de kiwi amarillo, 4 de Hayward y 1 de minis Nergi).

Las previsiones para la próxima campaña son producir 300 toneladas de kiwi amarillo y 100 de verde.

“En España hemos plantado a través de productores en Asturias y Extremadura.

“España jugará un importante papel en el kiwi rojo”

Grupo Catalá ha iniciado la producción nacional de esta fruta dentro del Consorcio Kiwi Passion®, un nuevo actor que crece a pasos agigantados

E

n los últimos años hemos asistido a una tendencia creciente en el consumo de kiwi amarillo en Europa y el resto del mundo. La oferta de variedades ha ido a más, y también han surgido kiwis comerciales de pulpa roja. Las políticas implementadas en los últimos 5 años por importantes actores del hemisferio sur y la reducción de la brecha de precios entre el kiwi verde y amarillo ha acelerado este proceso hasta tal punto que en Nueva Zelanda, este año la producción de kiwi amarillo ha superado a la del verde.

En este escenario, emerge con fuerza un nuevo actor, el Consorcio Kiwi Passion®, que cuenta actualmente con cerca de 100 hectáreas plantadas de variedades de kiwi rojo y 80 de amarillo. De ellas, aproximadamente la mitad se encuentran en plena producción. Su meta más próxima es alcanzar las 500 ha en 2023, y para lograr el objetivo prevén un programa de plantación de 120 ha al año. “El éxito de esta primera fase determinará el desarrollo posterior para llegar a 2025 con 700-800 ha”, cuenta a Fruit Today Nicola Negri, presidente del Consorcio.

En esta campaña, el Consorcio comercializará 500.000 kg de Red Passion® y 350.000 kg de Gold Passion® que se duplicarán en la próxima campaña, ya que varias plantaciones entrarán en producción.

El problema de los insumos En Italia, las expectativas comenzaron con buenos augurios por las altas cotizaciones de la fruta, entre 1 y 1,40€/kg, en mejor posición que el precio del kiwi griego, con alrededor de 0,20-0,30€/kg menos. Sin embargo, el enorme aumento en el coste tanto de las materias primas como de los servicios que están afectando a toda la cadena de suministro, provocará una disminución en el margen para los empacadores, y probablemente los consumidores reduzcan sus compras, ya que tendrán que pagar altos precios por el kiwi, analiza el presidente del Consorcio Kiwi Passion®.

Asimismo, en los últimos 2 años, la Covid-19 ha generado graves repercusiones en los mercados europeos y mundiales. Las exportaciones e importaciones de kiwi sufrieron particularmente debido a las restricciones globales. Además, tanto el aumento del precio del transporte como la escasez de contenedores han provocado una disminución del comercio y un aumento generalizado de los costes de producción.

“El Consorcio se apoya en un excelente grupo de socios logísticos y proveedores cualificados que, a pesar de todos los problemas generales, han ayudado a garantizar la entrega de materiales y servicios permitiéndonos brindar a todos nuestros clientes el suministro de nuestros kiwis”, concluye Nicola Negri.

Genetic quality The value of the crops from the Kiwi Passion® Consortium specifically lies in the genetic quality of its varieties, which have been selected and developed after several years of research. “We believe that Red Passion® is currently one of the best patented varieties of red kiwis in the world; its intense flavour and sophisticated sweetness characterised by touches of tropical fruit have immediately won consumers over, bearing witness to this every day.” On the other hand, the value of Yellow Gold Passion® lies both in the marketing window and in its highly recognisable organoleptic properties, as it is a late variety with a long shelf life and a very distinctive flavour compared to other varieties present on the markets.

All of this is maximised through a special attention to the image using communication and marketing campaigns in line with the trends, paying special attention to clients and consumers.

In figures The Kiwi Passion® Consortium has around 70 producer members and 14 sales and packaging associates in Italy, Greece, Spain and France. Numbers that will grow in the very near future, given the amount of requests they are receiving to join the project. “The number of member farmers is going to increase and the Kiwi Passion® family will soon have new members who will contribute to improving our varieties in order to hit ambitious goals. Si el año pasado la comercializadora murciana facturó 70 millones de euros con 80 millones de kilos entre todas las referencias, en este ejercicio prevé alcanzar los 100 millones de facturación. Así lo confirma el recién elegido presidente de la empresa, Domingo Llamas, que fue elegido a finales de octubre en la Asamblea anual.

Llamas llega al cargo con la firme convicción de mantener la curva de crecimiento de Unexport de la mano del equipo de profesionales que constituyen la empresa, entre empleados y 19 cooperativas socias de Murcia, Almería y Alicante.

e esta manera lo reconoce Domingo Martín, presidente de la Asociación de la Organización de Productores de Plátanos de Canarias (ASPROCAN).

Las pérdidas globales en una isla de 83.000 habitantes ascienden, hasta el momento a unos 1.000 millones de euros, según reconocen las autoridades. El principal recurso de la isla es el sector primario, y en concreto el cultivo del plátano, que aporta más del 50% del PIB, a la economía palmera.

“En Asprocan tenemos experiencia en sortear dificultades, puede que sea este carácter isleño el que nos imprime esa resiliencia. Posiblemente este sea el peor momento vivido hasta la fecha, aunque no el único porque cuando entró en vigor la OCM del plátano en 1993, nadie nos daba más de cinco años de vida.”

El último cálculo del sistema de satélites Copernicus, indica que la lava ha arrasado 1.241 hectáreas, así como 4.300 edificaciones de todo tipo (industrias, empaquetadoras de plátanos y viviendas familiares).

El volcán Cumbre Vieja se cebó en la zona más productiva de la isla, donde se daba la mayor concentración del cultivo platanero, en el Valle de Aridane y Fuencaliente. En el primero, las pérdidas se acercan al 90% de la producción del año en curso y a más del 60% en Fuencaliente, en el sur de la isla. Un porcentaje de ésta, todavía no evaluado para el 2022, está comprometido.

La erupción volcánica, que ha durado tres meses, se ha producido también en uno de los momentos álgidos de cosecha y ha provocado problemas con la ‘hijería’ (proceso natural de la planta por el que se sustituye por un hijo) y la supervivencia del cultivo para el futuro. En dos meses era el segundo varapalo soportado por los agricultores: el primero se llama cambio climático, porque en agosto se llegaron a registrar 47 grados de temperatura, lo que ocasionó más de seis millones de pérdidas.

La rotura de tuberías y falta de riego tensó la situación

Durante los 90 días de erupción, los agricultores han hecho frente a grandes desafíos e interminables jornadas de trabajo en unas condiciones extremas con el único objetivo de salvar un pequeño trozo de tierra que, en algunos casos, debían al banco. Muchos tardaban más de tres horas en llegar a sus plantaciones hasta que se pudieron habilitar barcazas del ejército que unían municipios costeros (Tazacorte con Puerto Naos) y permitían el acceso andando a las plantaciones. La isla llegó a tener más de 90 km. de carretas cortadas, bien por la lava, por el manto de ceniza o por la destrucción de edificios.

Una vez allí y con la ceniza como compañera, había que implementar nuevos procesos de trabajo que hacían más dura, si cabe, la situación. En algunos casos, la coyuntura se tensaba por la rotura de tuberías y falta de riego durante semanas.

Se sumaba también el tremor del volcán sin cesar durante las 24 horas y el acoso permanente de una ola de terremotos que, muchos días, obligaba a los palmeros, aconsejados por las autoridades, a vivir con la mochila de emergencia preparada en el recibidor de casa.

de cómo muchas de las empaquetadoras de plátanos que comercializaban su fruta eran sepultadas por la lava. Una lava que se ha cuantificado en torno a los 130 millones de metros cúbicos.

Bajo la amenaza de los gases Aunque el proceso eruptivo ha quedado oficialmente finalizado, dentro de la zona de exclusión existen altas concentraciones de gases, que según la UME (Unidad Militar de Emergencias) “podrían provocar la muerte de una persona en 30 minutos”.

Se trata, principalmente, de monóxido de carbono, un gas que también sale de las viviendas cuasi sepultadas y de las grietas abiertas en el suelo. Esta es, solo, una de las razones por las que quedan muchas semanas de situación de riesgo para la población de la isla, advierten desde el PEVOLCA (Plan de Emergencias Volcánicas de Canarias).

La firma catalana mantiene una estrecha relación, que data de hace décadas, con diferentes proveedores de la isla, tales como Cupalma, Europlátano y San Remo. Precisamente, todos ellos con plantaciones en la zona del Valle de Aridane, la más apta para el cultivo del plátano y también la más afectada por la explosión volcánica.

De hecho, los tres proveedores y, sobre todo, San Remo, vivieron momentos muy duros al tener que cerrar sus empaquetadoras por el aluvión de lava. Otras, como Europlátano, aminoraron su nivel de actividad y sus trabajadores pasaron por un ERTE, ya que la grave situación no permitía una vida laboral regular. “Sabemos que hay agricultores que no sólo han perdido su casa, sino también su medio de vida. Creo que no podíamos imaginar tanta tragedia junta.”

La compañía, muy activa en redes sociales, ha estado lanzando mensajes en este sentido durante los meses que ha durado la erupción con el objetivo de explicar al consumidor final que el producto, aunque estuviera manchado seguía manteniendo las mismas características de siempre. José María Ruíz, manager of the company, underscores that “the most effective way to support and acknowledge the great work by the producers from La Palma is to continue ripening their bananas and, of course, to contribute to their consumption. The idea is to express our gratitude for everything we owe to this island and to acknowledge the incredible, unflagging work of the farmers who have been giving their all in such difficult circumstances, because without them we are nothing.”

The Catalonian company has had a close connection, dating back decades, with different suppliers from the island, such as Cupalma, Europlátano and San Remo. All of these companies have plantations in the Valle de Aridane area, the most suitable for bananagrowing, and also the worst affected by the volcanic eruption. In fact, the three suppliers, and particularly San Remo, experienced very tough moments as they had to close their packaging plant due to the lava flow. Consumers should shop in a supportive way, because the fruit inside is just as good and it is a way of contributing to the island’s recovery.”

The company, which is very active on social media, has been launching messages of this type during the months of the eruption, aimed at explaining to end consumers that the product, although it might be marked, continues to maintain its traditional, high-quality characteristics. They have also been underscoring their differentiating aspects compared to plantains, such as the proximity and the specific nutrients that come from the volcanic soil where they are produced.

El Cupalma actual es el resultado de la fusión de varias cooperativas de esta misma isla. Contamos con más de 2.000 agricultores pequeños, cuya producción se da en media hectárea de tierra. Esta situación confiere una peculiaridad a las explotaciones que son atendidas de manera muy directa con un seguimiento al pie del terreno.

Otra de nuestras distinciones es que contamos con producciones en las zonas más recónditas de la isla, una isla que cuenta con una orografía muy escarpada y gran altitud.

El más alejado de nuestros productores se sitúa en la fajana de Garafía (y por fajana se entiende no lo que ahora comentan los medios, sino un terreno en plataforma erosionado y con tierra encima).

Ustedes han abogado siempre por un modelo de concentración basada en la fusión más absoluta, y no como algunas otras uniones que se realizan a ‘medio pelo’.

Personalmente no creo en esta fórmula.

En una organización no se puede hacer todo. Hay una frase que utilizan los americanos cuya traducción es: “los intermediarios se pueden eliminar, pero lo que hacen, no”. Supongo que la lectura que hizo la distribución española en un momento dado era que el negocio de la maduración era una mina, con márgenes tremendos.

La realidad es otra: la maduración es un tema muy personal, que necesita una presencia y seguimientos continuos, incluidos los fines de semana. Esto es una absoluta realidad y significa un sacrificio por parte del madurador que se desconoce. Es un trabajo de 24/7. ¿Dónde maduran los plátanos de los innumerables supermercados que tiene hoy esta isla de 80.000 habitantes?

Personalmente no creo que en La Palma estén justificadas tantas grandes superficies en una isla en la que no crece de población. Nuestra tasa de universitarios es de las más altas, sin embargo, una vez formados, no vuelven y la isla pierde habitantes.

We must promote the merger of cooperatives, but it is a vocation that is seeing a great deal of resistance. The Minister of Agriculture himself has suggested it to us at our meetings.

Do you think that the bananas produced on this island have a marked differentiating nature? Some ripeners have mentioned this to me…

All the Canary Islands produce bananas with extraordinary quality, resulting in the important demand that we have on the mainland and in the fact that end consumers know how to distinguish between a banana from other continents and our product. However, it is true that La Palma, as it is the most western island, has a milder climate and soils that are very favourable for this crop.

You also have two packaging plants in southern Tenerife.

Yes, we do. Cupalma has two warehouses there, one belonging to the cooperative and another that is rented. Tenerife allows us to be complementary during the winter production, when the greatest peak in demand occurs.

From your point of view, why have so many companies launched into the banana ripening business over the past decade?

Personally, I think that bananas are used as an added appeal, in a similar way to what happens with milk. For many marketers, it is a complementary operation in their portfolio when negotiating with the supermarkets.

And regarding the fashion that has been started in some large distribution chains to have their own ripening processes, as other retail giants in Europe do. What is your opinion?

I, myself, do not believe in this formula. In an organisation you can’t do everything. There is a sentence used by the Americans: “You can cut the middlemen out, but not what they do”. I suppose that Spanish distribution chains decided at some point that the ripening business was a goldmine, with huge profit margins. The reality is different: ripening is a very personal subject, which needs on site presence and continuous monitoring, including at weekends. This is the total reality and it means untold sacrifices by the ripener. It is a 24/7 job.

Where do the numerous supermarkets on this island of 80,000 inhabitants ripen their bananas?

I don’t think that on La Palma there is any justification for such large stores on an island where the population is not increasing. Our figures for university students are amongst the highest, but once trained, they do not come back and the island loses inhabitants.

esta Organización pertenecen más de 3.000 agricultores de plátano de diferentes islas, solo en La Palma cuenta con unos 2.000. Centenares de estos agricultores, vieron como la lava, en pocos días, sepultaba las plantaciones que habían cuidado toda una vida.

El desastre se gestó muy pronto, durante el primer mes de erupción. Dos de las empaquetadoras de la Organización se encontraban en la ‘zona cero’ y pronto resultaron inoperativas debido a las coladas de lava: Covalle y Volcán de San Juan, aunque esta última pronto empezará a

trabajar. En ambos almacenes se llegaban a procesar unos 15 millones de kilos.

El año pasado, por Coplaca, accionista mayoritario de Eurobanan Canarias, pasaron 140 millones de kilos de plátanos, de los que 125 se vendieron en la península y 15 de ellos abastecieron a las islas.

n la próxima campaña de melón las resistencias van a ser un factor limitante para los productores. Para aportarles soluciones efectivas, la casa de semillas Enza Zaden sigue sumando nuevos materiales con resistencias, pero sin perder de lado el sabor que caracteriza a sus variedades y manteniendo su apuesta por el suministro continuado durante los 12 meses del año. En este sentido, tienen tres nuevos materiales con resistencias a oídio y pulgón que presentan en esta campaña 2021/22: dos nuevos Galias para aire libre y un Piel de sapo para invernadero con el que completan su catálogo de melón con las citadas resistencias.

Genci Armero, responsable de melón para Iberia en Enza Zaden, detalla la completa oferta varietal que ofrece la compañía en el segmento de melón. “El suministro completo todo el año es uno de nuestros principales objetivos. The sowing dates for Almeria melons are not the best for the optimum development of this crop. “The cycles are shorter and on earlier dates, therefore the weather conditions are not the best, as occurs in Castilla La Mancha,” the melon-improver explains. “For this reason, we have to develop varieties that adapt to the Almeria cycle.” With Valentín and Mirambel, Ramiro Arnedo is covering the two crop cycles in the province and it resolves the calibre problems according to the sowing dates, obtaining fruit from 3 to 3.5 kilos.

Specifically, with the earliest variety, Valentín, farmers easily obtain a larger melon, whilst with the later Mirambel, they manage to contain the calibre.

Calima F1: ‘El Galia más resistente’

Valdemar F1 es melón piel de sapo que sigue la línea de calidad de su variedad más exitosa -Valverde F1 lleva casi dos décadas liderando el mercado de los “marquistas”-, pero con una importante diferencia: incorpora la resistencia a oídio.

Está recomendada para fechas de trasplante desde mediados del mes de enero a mitad de marzo (el mismo segmento de Valverde F1), y destaca por una planta de vigor medio que arroja una elevada producción, y por sus altas cualidades a nivel de sabor, escriturado y homogeneidad.

Además, junto a la mencionada resistencia a oídio, aporta también resistencia a fusarium, cribado y pulgón.

En otra tipología, la de melón Galia, la casa de semillas lanzó recientemente Calima F1, su primera variedad con resistencias a oídio y pulgón en esta categoría. Calima F1 aporta también resistencia a fusarium y cribado, y por ello lo definen como su ‘Galia más resistente’. Recomendado para trasplantes del 20 de febrero al 20 de marzo en Almería, este material sigue la línea de calidad de antecesores como Brisa F1 y Terral F1, con los que coincide en fechas, y Mistral F1, para plantaciones de enero.

Los frutos presentan una elevada homogeneidad, tanto en calibre (entre 1kg y 1,500 kg, ideal para exportación) como en forma, y un color de piel amarillo dorado y escriturado bien cerrado en todas las direcciones que lo hacen muy atractivo visualmente. A ello se une el cierre pistilar pequeño, que minimiza problemas de pudrición, y la buena poscosecha.

A nivel interno, Calima F1 se caracteriza por su carne crujiente, sabrosa y con un alto nivel de Brix.

Otra de las novedades de HM. CLAUSE es Minimel, su primer sapo mini, que se introdujo en todas las zonas en la pasada campaña, y con el que esperan tener un crecimiento importante en 2022.

In another typology, Galia melon, the seed company recently launched Calima F1, its first variety with resistance to powdery mildew and aphids in this category. Calima F1 also has resistance to fusarium and MNSV and for this reason they have defined it as their ‘most resistant Galia’. Recommended for transplanting from the 20th of February to the 20th of March in Almeria, this material follows the same line regarding quality as its predecessors such as Brisa F1 and Terral F1, with which it coincides in dates, and Mistral F1, for January plantations.

This medium strong plant has a good aptitude for setting and has very good vegetable health due to the resistances that it incorporates.

The fruit show a significant homogeneity, both in size (between 1 kg and 1.5 kg, ideal for export) and in shape, and with a golden yellow colour and well-closed grooving in all directions that make it visually attractive. Added to this is the small pistilar closure, which minimises rotting problems, along with its good post-harvest.

Internally, Calima F1 is characterised by its crunchy, tasty flesh with a high Brix level.

Another of HM.CLAUSE’s new developments is Minimel, its first mini piel de sapo, which was introduced in all the zones during the last campaign and with which the company expects to see an important growth in 2022.

a división de hortícolas de Bayer, con sus marcas Seminis y Deruiter, continúa trabajando para ofrecer a sus clientes la mejor oferta varietal para los cultivos de tomate de primavera, especialmente en el segmento de tomate Beef.

En unos meses en la zona de Zafarraya (Granada) empezará la siembra de tomate para primavera/verano, donde la variedad Anairis es la referencia en tomate cuello verde beef y lleva cosechando éxitos más de 10 años. A estas variedades se une SVTH2900 como novedad para este mercado, que incrementa todavía más la producción y mejora la calidad del fruto con un excepcional cierre pistilar, además de proporcionar un mejor paquete de resistencias.

La parte positiva es el crecimiento de las exportaciones a Reino Unido (+4,9% en volumen y +25,8% en valor), que ha logrado por primera vez desbancar a Francia como segundo destino de las frutas y hortalizas almerienses en términos de valor. Una “sorpresa” inesperada que despeja los malos augurios que había en el sector debido al Brexit.

Alberto acude a nuestra cita en el centro de Valencia en su maxiscooter. Ha tenido un día de reuniones maratonianas y llega algo cansado. Aunque la cita estaba planeada, como el día había sido de tal intensidad me pidió volver a reunirnos otro día. Pero la cosa se alargó porque dos hiperactivos juntos dan para mucho.

Era jueves por la noche, el día en que la Cuarentuna de la Facultad de Derecho se reúne muy cerca de dónde habíamos quedado. De tanto hablar, cuando nos dimos cuenta, los tunos ya se habían ido.

Me he quedado pensado que usted me recuerda a alguien y ahora me he dado cuenta de su parecido con Mario Conde en la época en que fue todo un ídolo para este país.

Jajaja. Me lo han dicho muchas veces e incluso alguna vez lo he tenido que desmentir. Nos separan bastantes años. Yo no me veo tanto parecido, aunque la gente sí. Lo que espero es no pasar por donde pasó él. ¿Cómo era su entorno familiar de niño?

Tuve una infancia feliz en una familia acomodada. Vivíamos en el centro de la ciudad en un edificio que pertenecía a mi familia. Mi padre fue un empresario de éxito y mi madre era hija de médicos de prestigio. De hecho, dos calles de Valencia llevan el nombre de familiares directos.

que en aquel momento era solo masculino.

La educación que allí se recibía era muy estricta y de mucha calidad. Regresé a Valencia para empezar la Universidad.

Pues menudo cambio, de un internado religioso y masculino al ambiente universitario.

Efectivamente, aquello significaba una explosión de libertad para un adolescente que había vivido sin chicas en su entorno.

Llegué a Derecho y a mi alrededor no veía nada más que mujeres guapas y fiesta. ¿Cuándo decidió entrar en la tuna?

En el primer año de carrera. Con las hormonas en plena ebullición me di cuenta de que pertenecer a la tuna significaba muchas posibilidades de pasarlo bien. Y así fue, porque ese año solo aprobé las asignaturas justas para que no me echaran de la facultad. ¿No se necesitaba ningún requisito para poder ser tuno?

Lo único que se exigía era estar matriculado en Derecho; puedes entrar incluso, si no sabes tocar o cantar. En la actualidad, la Cuarentuna de Derecho es un grupo elitista, un círculo de más que amigos, con el que puedes contar durante toda la vida y que tienes ahí para apoyarte, en lo personal y en lo laboral, siempre que se pueda.

Unas veces somos 8 y otras 20, y coincidimos distintas generaciones.

Supongo que en aquella época estaban permitidas las novatadas.

Me han dicho que usted era un bicho de niño, un culo inquieto que engañaba a su madre para que su padre le comprara una moto y que, en la fábrica de la familia, cuando su padre lo dejaba en la oficina, se escapaba al taller con los empleados.

Sí, así es. Tengo moto desde los 14 años a través de una artimaña que monté entre mis padres. Y respecto a mis visitas a la fábrica, siempre acaba serrando madera, poniendo tornillos, etc., nunca estaba quieto en el despacho. El encargado se quejaba de mí, pero como era hijo del dueño, no tenía otra que dejarme hacer. Por eso conozco el oficio de la madera desde abajo.

Pero a usted lo educan en uno de los internados de mayor prestigio en España, en San José de Campillos (Málaga), donde fueron Matías Prats, Bertín Osborne y jueces de renombre.

Sí, a los 13 años me llevaron a este internado,

Sí, por supuesto. Se hacían auténticas trastadas. A mí me toco, con los de mi promoción, subirme a la copa de los árboles en la calle de la universidad y cantar píopío como si fuéramos pájaros. La cosa no quedó ahí porque íbamos en calzoncillos y teníamos prohibido hablar, solo piar. El escándalo fue tal que vino la policía y nos preguntó qué hacíamos ahí. Nosotros solo les podíamos piar. Ante el absurdo y más de media hora de espera, la policía optó por irse. ¡Había que ganarse la beca roja!

Y seguro que la diversión era continua.

Por supuesto, aquí en la plaza de la Universidad vieja de Valencia y esta misma fuente pública, donde ahora estoy sentado, nos hemos bañado, hemos hecho gamberradas y cantado hasta la saciedad.

¿Qué le aportó la tuna aquellos años?

Entre otras cosas, me permitió viajar por muchos países porque nos llamaban para ac-

tuaciones. La cadena de hoteles, entonces SOL, nos pagaba los aviones y la estancia en países de Iberoamérica durante los veranos. Con 20 y pocos años yo ya había estado en Méjico, Cuba, Colombia, etc.

Todas las insignias que lleva mi capa pertenecen a los países que he visitado como tuno y tengo más de 32. ¿Pensó alguna vez en ejercer como abogado?

La verdad es que no me lo planteé porque el mundo empresarial me apasiona, siempre he disfrutado mucho, y sigo haciéndolo. Posiblemente, madera de abogado, nunca mejor dicho, no tengo, pero haber estudiado Derecho me ha proporcionado muchas tablas en el mundo empresarial. ¿Le gustaría formar una familia propia?

No lo descarto en absoluto, y tampoco tener hijos. He tenido relaciones muy duraderas sin pasar por el altar, pero a día de hoy, no he encontrado la persona adecuada. A lo mejor mi situación actual responde a que he viajado mucho, y no hablo como tuno, sino como profesional. Tengo 5 pasaportes llenos de cuños de entradas y salidas a diferentes países. ¿Cuál es su rutina del día a día?

Soy bastante estructurado y corro una hora por el cauce del Turia casi todas las mañanas. Después me ducho, desayuno y leo las noticias del mundo. Sobre las nueve estoy en la oficina, y lo primero que hago es volver a leer la prensa del sector porque considero que hay que estar informado de lo que sucede. Y a partir de aquí a resolver asuntos.

Si alguna pretendienta lee esta entrevista, ¿qué le diría?

Jajaja. Que soy un chollo porque me encanta cocinar, pongo la lavadora, plancho…. Cuando he vivido con alguien hago pactos para las tareas domésticas.

Alberto Palmí Cuarentuno

Alberto Palmí is 47 years old. He isn’t married because he has yet to find his other half. He has used Tinder and is not ashamed to admit it; he even confesses that he might use some of the photos from our session on the social media site. Being hyperactive he suffers, as I do, from bruxism and now he is in the middle of getting his night-time anti-grinding teeth guard adapted.

Alberto arrives at our appointment in the centre of Valencia on his maxi-scooter. He has had a day packed with meetings and he arrives slightly worn out. Although the appointment was planned, after such an intense day, he asked for us to meet up on another day. But, in the end, putting two hyperactive people together meant that things carried on longer than expected.

It was Thursday evening, the day when the ‘Cuarentuna’ from the Law School meets up near where we had arranged to meet. We talked so long that before we knew it, the ‘tunos’ (Spanish traditional university student musicians and singers) had all gone home.

I have been trying to think who you remind me of, and I have just realised that you look like (former Spanish banker et al.) Mario Conde when he was a legend for this country.

(Laughter). I’ve often been told that and I’ve even had to deny it a few times. There are quite a few years between us. I can’t see it myself, although other people can. I just hope I don’t spend time where he did.

I had a happy childhood in a well-off family. We lived in the centre of the city in a building that belonged to my family. My father was a successful businessman and my mother was the daughter of prestigious doctors. In fact, two streets in Valencia are named after direct family members.

Amongst other things, it allowed me to travel to many countries because they called us to perform. At the time, the SOL hotel chain paid the flights and accommodation in Latin American countries during the summers. At the age of just over 20, I had been to Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, etc. All the badges that I have on my cape belong to the countries that I visited as a tuno and I have over 32 of them.

I’ve been told that you were a devil as a child; an antsy-pants who deceived his mother so that his father would buy him a moped and who, when his father left him in the office in the family’s factory, would escape to the shop floor with the workers.

Yes, that is right. I have had a moped since I was 14 through a stunt I played on my parents. And regarding my visits to the factory, I always ended up sawing up wood, putting screws in, etc.; I never sat still in the office. The foreman complained about me, but as I was the owner’s son, he had to put up with me. For this reason, I know the wood trade from the bottom up.

But you were educated at one of the most prestigious boarding schools in Spain, at San José de Campillos (Malaga), where journalist Matías Prats, singer Bertín Osborne and important judges all went.

Yes, I was sent to this boarding school when I was 13 years old, which at that time was a boys only school. The education there was very strict and very good. I returned to Valencia to go to university.

What a change – going from a religious, boys’ boarding school to a university environment.

Did you ever think about practicing law as a lawyer?

The truth is that I never considered it because I love the business world; I have always enjoyed it and I continue to do so. Possibly, I was never cut out to be a lawyer, but having studied Law has given me important experience in the world of business.

Would you like to have your own family?

I don´t rule it completely out, or having children, for that matter. I have had long-lasting relationships without getting married, but I have yet to meet the right person. My current situation might have something to do with the fact that I have travelled a great deal and not just as a tuno, but also in my work. I have 5 passports full of entry and exit stamps from different countries.

What is your daily routine?

Indeed, this meant an explosion of freedom for a teenager who had lived without girls around him. I arrived at the Law School and I was surrounded by pretty women and parties.

I am quite a structured person and I jog for an hour along the Turia River almost every morning. Then I shower, breakfast and I read the world news. I am in the office at about nine o’clock and the first thing I do is read the sector’s press, as I consider it essential to know what is going on. And then I start to resolve issues.

When did you decide to join ‘la tuna’?

If a suitor were to read this interview, what would you say to her?w

In the first year at university. With my hormones at boiling point, I realised that belonging to the Tuna meant many chances of having a good time. And that is what happened, because that year I only passed enough subjects to ensure that they didn’t chuck me out of Law School.

(Laughter). That I am a great catch because I love cooking, I do the washing, the ironing… Whenever I have lived with someone, we always reached agreements about the household chores.

Were there any special requirements to become a tuno?

The only thing required was being enrolled in Law; you could join even if you didn’t know how to play or sing. Now, the Law School ‘Cuarentuna’ is an elitist group, a circle of people who are more than friends, who you can rely on throughout your life and that have your back, both in your personal life and at work, whenever possible. Sometimes there are 8 of us and at others about 20, with different generations coinciding.

I suppose that at that time hazing was allowed.

Yes, of course. Real pranks were carried out. My class had to climb up to the top of the trees in the university street and sing cheep-cheep as if we were birds. As if that were not enough, we were only wearing underpants and we could not talk, only cheep. We made such a noise that the police came and asked us what we were doing there.
